    It was amazing seeing these decks after so long. I used to play the tcg with my dad before he passed away and this was a hit of nostalgia and old memories that really brought a smile to me. I hope you keep playing old decks with guests b/c it is great.

    I love seeing a couple people take these old cards, slap them in some sleeves, and battle it out. No regard to the current value of the cards or fear of criticism from the current collector market. Just players enjoying the game for what it was intended for. Love it Mahone

      They might be proxy cards. I wouldn’t be mad if they were real, but, like, why would they do that?

    • @fawfulmark2

      I know that feel. It's like digging out an old comic to read or playing a videogame on an older system: sure it might have some value now due to age, but it doesn't mean I have to suddenly turn them into antiques or trophies and can't enjoy them like I used to.
      Also standard Base Set Blastoise and Venusaurs can be found for as low as $25-30 bucks in some cases so it's not really a Bank Buster here- there are modern YuGiOh cards played in decks with dumber prices than that(looking at you, ZEUS.)

      I have both these decks + 2 other retro decks. The 4 decks cost me a total of around 1500€. I used to play magic. 1 of my decks in magic was around 1500$. it really isn’t that crazy when you put it that way. It is waaay cheaper to buy the cards for these decks than it is to crack open booster packs. Sure it costs more short term. But in the long run you’ll save tons of money if you just buy the specific cards you want.

    Super cool to see the old decks play, makes me wish for more official, weird formats to showcase the older and weirder cards that would never survive in Expanded. Obviously WotC stuff will never be official, but hey, the idea stands.
    I can't blame Venusaur, that Pokemon Center combo is nuts, but my heart breaks for my boy Blastoise! But we can all agree, both of these awesome guys are better than overrated Charizard, right? lol

      They were unfair to Charizard in Base Set. That the text says to discard two energy cards instead of two energy leaves it out even in decks made for fun. More when the homage reprints in Diamond and Pearl and Evolutions correct this defect.

    This is an awesome throwback, I'll never forget playing at my local Pokemon league, all casual, with my Suicune Ex and Blastoise Deck with pokecenters, at the time I was so proud of coming up with that deck that was sooo powerful, I would literally win 90% of matches with it. I eventually stopped playing TCG around 2004 but the Blastoise Deck still hangs around there in the sleeves somewhere at my mom's house.
    Coming back to Pokemon TCG now and I think I'll regret the state I left all those Blastoise from playing them too much hahah, such fond memories...
    Thanks for the deck demo and all the content you provide Andrew! It's been very nice for me to relive my pokemon hobby (now in my 30s yikes), and much of it is thanks to you guys consistently pumping out awesome content!

    Went and watched all of the matches on stream and I have to say, this was so fascinating! I've always read (because I was way too young for it when it came out) about how like Rain Dance Blastoise is THE blitz deck of the old sets, and it's so interesting to watch it struggle to find leverage in an actual match. I guess theory and write-ups can only say so much!

I have a hard time seeing Will’s prizes due to overlay. Also, it’s fine on computer, but on phone I can’t make out the individual prize cards as well, so the full 2x3 setup would really help me. The blue cards just look like lots of blue and I can’t tell if there are 3 cards in the top row or two because I can’t see the overlap. Hope I didn’t come off poorly!

    Blastoise/ Articuno/ Lapras was always my favourite deck in the pokemon trading card game, gameboy color game!
    Venusaur had some "pokemon center" shenanigans for lots of healing.
    when i played Venusaur on TCG ONE, i remember throwing Dark Muk and Jungle Gloom to put loads of status conditions onto the defending pokemon. Lickitung was in my opinion the most annoying gen 1 card. even haymakers struggled with it!

  • @redx3009
    @redx3009 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I prefer Venusaur because I love to move energy around to different pokes.

  • @Sloppyjoey1
    @Sloppyjoey1 ปีที่แล้ว

    In context: These powers aren't even close imo and the real argument is around pokemon center in my view. Refreshing the hand with energy was just wayyy too easy in base set PLUS rain dance evades energy removal so you don't even need to necessarily play energy in advance, it can be ran with pokemon center VERY easily. Energy Trans and Rain Dance have the same tempo the issue is rain dance sustains it.
    Wills deck was just built better. Articuno is just too slow and thins the deck massively for resources. Lickitung and even Clefable make more sense in my view.

      I just built a Base-Fossil Rain Dance deck recently with stuff I got off TCGPlayer and the total came to just a little under 200 bucks-75 of which was for 3 Blastoise.
      Other TCGs tend to have far dumber prices just for a modern era deck than that. Though to be fair there are some classic Pokemon formats that are looking to have pretty dumb price barrier to get cards to play on (eReader/EX format cards just are insane in some cases) but Base-Neo at least seems to be among the more forgiving on the wallet.
