    Just went out there this morning. Man not the best morning for fishing. Maybe that just comes down to me being a rookie and less experience 😂

      Nah it is hard work out there at the moment. Normally going off around this time of year but has been slow and a general lack of bait fish.

    awesome video man. really wanted to try that spot for a long time but never had the time. been hard lately fishing due to the heat of the summer. those were some good snappers you got. but did not expect to see so many kelpfish getting caught.

    • @DarkmoonAngler

      Was surprised to see so many of them too. Not strong swimmers and you know how big the swell can be out on that coast.

      Being a local for many years , I remember an old mate of mine told me that there are a few reefs of sandstone mixed with a bit of rock and mussel beds attached , building a reef straight out to sea . They must still be there , even after getting wrecked by massive storms that periodically come through . Cheers .

    • @DarkmoonAngler
      @DarkmoonAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rickoliver2059 Interesting. Figured there were boulders out there but never got a snag so wouldn't have suspected a reef structure.

      @@DarkmoonAngler Yea , I remember being snagged a couple of times and busted off , so there must be a few reefs out there . I can imagine there would be mussels growing on them also , as the mussel spat is prolific at the waters edge .

    Chur , great fishing to be had up that coastline alright , especially before Easter . Cochranes Gap is another great spot too , longer walk from the carpark though . Caught my best (18lbs ) snapper from Hamilton`s Gap , going on dusk , near full tide with an Easterly wind , sea was flat calm , in the right place at the right time , actually had to stop fishing that evening , would not have been able to carry anymore fish back to the car !! Cheers .

    • @DarkmoonAngler
      @DarkmoonAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! Thats a decent snapper for off the sand! definitely will be doing the walk south to Cochranes for a look.... and fish. Be looking to time it with easterlies or even a wet NE. Cheers for sharing mate👍

      @@DarkmoonAngler yeah I've seen some fatty snappers being pulled out on my walks and quad rides usually by the high tech fisherman. And I'm there at least once every week. What rig would you use there? Breakaway sinkers, what size? What size hook?

    • @DarkmoonAngler
      @DarkmoonAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@6foot8jesuspilledpureblood82not overly experienced in that location, but I'd start with breakaways holding down a ledger rig. 4/0 circle hooks and 50cm squares off fresh grey eye mullet fillet or occy. Only advice I can give for around there would be low is more productive for snapper, combined with a change of light and stay close but clear of the structure. too many snags and too many Hiwhiwi. size of sinkers would depend on size of tidal flow... just have to experiment. braid would have advantages in less line drag there.

  • @coolasfishing
    @coolasfishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really neat video. Such a unique style of fishing with a lot of adaptations for the Wild West. Some beautiful spots around there and you guys seemed to have landed some awesome fish. Must be rocky out there for the hiwihiwi because I don’t think they’re a sand dweller

    • @DarkmoonAngler
      @DarkmoonAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Hiwihiwi population was somewhat of a surprise. Didn't get a single snag but there may have been a little foul out there for them to shelter in. The channel at low provides shelter from the ocean swell, but at high tide in a big swell... the rocks we saw wouldn't provide much cover for them.

    What reels do u use 🤔

    • @DarkmoonAngler
      @DarkmoonAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Low to mid range reels for that kind of fishing. Due to the iron sand environment. Longcast spinning reels with reasonable line capacity probably best. I use a Shimano Aerlex 10000 and an old Penn Sargus, but also have a heavier Fin nor 10000 offshore for targeting heavier fish.

    Another great vid! Loving your content. I have to ask - the rig your using is it the 90mile rig? What size hook do you use. Keep it brother!

    • @DarkmoonAngler
      @DarkmoonAngler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to use the Nascan mutsu hooks. not sure on there size ratings (varies between brands) but we up sized on that trip due to the constant Hiwihiwi's swallowing hooks. Approx 6/0-
      7/0 size.
