Do you know the difference between Marine Recon and Marine Raiders? While both of these elite communities have a lot of differences, they’re more similar than you think. In fact, the MARSOC Raiders you see today actually came from Force Reconnaissance companies when they stood them up back in the 2000’s.
Recon Marines and Marine Raiders each play their part in the Marine Corps and beyond. If you’re interested in joining either of these communities, or you’re just here for the information, you’ll know the fundamental differences between Recon and MARSOC by the end of this video.

In 1987, Force Recon was invited to join SOCOM but General Grey refused. The Marines held to a stupid and politically correct notion that there should not 'be an elite within an elite' and that 'all Marines were elite.' This way of thinking caused the Marines to stagnant a bit

@@slightlysublimated1619 I mean it is pretty elite. It’s just most people don’t understand how it works. Like we can fast rope an entire assault platoon (rifles), security platoon (more rifles) an auxiliary (3rd group rifles) + a weapons company (reinforce the rifles, specialized weapons + snipers) + an entire headquarters including 6 specialized shops with their own S2 INTEL SHOP. This can also be done in many variations and can be augmented easily with AAV or even an entire dedicated Marine Air Wing attached to them. And this is ONLY the “normal” infantry. 50% of Normal marine infantry have special operations training anyways from SOTG now called EOTG. You can easily get special operations training when your unit attaches to a MEU or if advanced schools open up where they might select 10 marines form the entire battalion to attempt and attend. Think about it this way. Our POGs in a supply shop deployed FORWARD can protect their own supply shop from being over-run by the enemy while the infantry and combat arms forces continue pushing forward for mission completion.

I always laugh when people say recon is obsolete. They're not. Their main purpose is to support the grunts in the magtf by providing greenside reconnaissance. That need will never change and they will never go away. They just need to realize that while it's good to practice cqb and raids that the SEALS will always get maritime direct action missions over them. It sucks but the politicians are going to go with the SEALs majority of the time. Sneaking around in the bushes might not be as sexy as kicking a door in, but thats the true purpose of Recon. Everything else is extra.
With that being said, I think the Recon community can be "helped" in a few ways by:
    1. Allowing individual Recon Marines to augment MARSOC units on an as needed basis. Should a MSOT ever need or want an experienced Force Recon Marines expertise, they would have that option without a Force Recon Company losing a stellar Marine. Should a Force Recon Marine ever want to "try something new", he can do so without having to leave the Marine Corps or Recon- and we all know Recon is hurting for bodies even more than MARSOC is. Both organizations don't have to be competing with each other.
    2. Allow Recon Marines to train at the MSOS. Should a Recondo want to learn some of the skills MARSOC has to offer, they should be allowed the opportunity to do so. The two communities feed off each other not just in Marine Corps history but in the complementary roles they will play when the next conflict involving the USMC pops off.
    3. Give Recon the in-extremis hostage rescue mission back. I don't want to get into any arguments or split any hairs about SEALs VS Recon but I do think it would be a better use of Recons time to allow them to have this old mission set back. Why wait for the SEALs to fly in from the states when you have Recon on a MEU that can do the job much faster? In my opinion, as much cool guy units as possible should have the in-extremis hostage rescue capability because SEAL team 6 is only so big, and they can't be everywhere in the world at once. I'd even go so far as to bring back the CIF companies from the Green Berets- but that's another topic for another day.
Recon is not going anywhere. They just need to do a little bit more soul searching and the higher ups need to advocate for them a bit more. The Marine Corps is lucky to have Recon Marines.

In my opinion, I think it's a bit anachronistic to phrase Recon as special infantry, when historically, before SOCOM ever existed, it was deemed special operations, such as its role in MACV/SOG during Vietnam. I think a better definition is special operations and reconnaissance in direct support of conventional Marine operations. In short, it is a game of semantics. We can apply the same logic to the Raiders, whose MOS is 0372, which still has an 03 prefix and could just as easily be called special infantry, despite their employment by SOCOM. Besides, the special operations capable moniker in the Corps can also apply to more conventional typed elements than Recon within a MEU or MAGTAF, which is why I'd simply classify Recon as a Marine internal special operations force. At the end of the day, their employers and mission sets differ more than their capabilities.

They could sent some Marines to serve in the SAS for a few times as exchange officers so that they could get some experience and training for this unit and one requirement they could make to join is to have served for at least 5 years in the Marines.

Rangers are assaulters and Recon are reconnaissance specialists. The reason Regiment doesn’t do free fall or dive is because it isn’t necessary. When Regiment deploys to an area it’s only there for one reason and that is to kill and capture high value targets.
Recon Marines need special methods of insertion because of their mission.

Yep, the 75th Rangers are a like the axe in the SOCOM/JSOC tool box, and the scalpels are units like Delta Force and DevGru. Rangers serve multiple customers depending on what the mission is.
Force Recon only have one customer and thats the big conventional Marine divisions. They’re the the eyes and ears for USMC commanders only. Regardless of the SpecOp gear Force Recon use, they’re still a conventional asset in the big picture of things

For years the Marine Corp resisted joining SOCOM. Finally they realized they could get more money in their budget (from SOCOM's budget) by having a unit in SOCOM, thus the re-establishment of the MARSOC Raiders. So yeah, lots of overlap between RECON and RAIDERS but the RAIDERS have since branched out beyond RECON's main "employment".

my dream is to be a Recon Marine. But, I am gonna go through either Infantry MOS, or Machine Gunner MOS for my first contract as I hear that it's better to volunteer than immediately choose Recon due to their contract. anyways, I wear glasses, is that going to be an issue? In case I wanna become a Recon Marine? I am looking to get PRK surgery in my future military career.
I am currently on a low carb diet. I am a male at 275lbs and at 22yrs at 5'5 at the time of this comment. I started this diet last year at 330lbs. I never really cared much about losing weight then, but it has always been a dream of mine to join the military since I was in high school, at my school, I had AFROTC ( god I hated uniform inspection day lmfao, we had a big flight ) A lot of recruiters came to my school as well. Marines, Army, Navy, etc. this was during 2014-2018. Anyways, I am doing much better now with what I eat and whatnot, I am even starting to work out for the first time in a few years since graduating HS. I just do small workouts in my room every other day. Push-ups, Crunches, Planks ( I suck at these ) I haven't done pull-ups yet as I don't have the equipment for that. I was told by a Marine Recruiter last month, that If I can get my weight down to 173lbs I'd be set for Boot. though might go a tad lower to be safe.
Anyways, Great video. very Informative. I have been watching a butt ton of Marine related videos and MOS reviews from a bunch of Military TH-camrs, to see whats what.

Nope, there is a reason Force Recon needs to be with MAGTF. It's no less lucrative than MARSOC. Force Recon is simply MARSOC for the MAGTF. And they need that component. Recon and Force Recon are complementary and they are both needed in the MAGTF.

They have the Regimental Reconnaissance Company staffed with the best Rangers from the 75th for SOCOM recon missions. Tier one operators. Recon is tier three and like every marine unit has mostly hand me down and sometimes broken gear. Also the training is shorter than most pipelines. Also force recon isn’t Marsoc for the MAGTF. Similar training and capabilities but totally different missions. Also force recon hasn’t been a thing for years and recon marines haven’t gotten real world missions for years. Tough and deadly bunch of dudes but the marine corps does that with all its units partly because we’re at peace (mostly) and partly because incompetent leadership. MARSOC are basically the Marine Corps version of Green Beret ODAs in terms of working and training host nation indigenous forces. Yes they do other trades that are more kinetic but the charter of Foreign Internal Defense and (Advise, assist and accompany) is the most important role MARSOC will contribute while being forward deployed. The demand for SOF organizations that can force multiply and capacity build has skyrocketed over the past 2 decads
Force Recon is purely an intelligence gathering asset for the bigger conventional USMC elements. Again, they can do other stuff like DA, VBSS etc if needed but their purpose was always being a reconnaissance asset for the conventional Marine commanders.
Honestly, It wouldn’t surprise me the least to see Force Recon get disbanded in the next 5-10 years.

That will allow you to get a taste of the infantry, and decide which path you want to take. A lot of guys that sign up contract 0321, end up quitting because they didn't know what they were getting into at the time. The BRC instructors will tell you they have a lot more trouble with contract guys than with volunteers. Also anything your recruiter tells you, YOU NEED TO SEE IN WRITING ON YOUR CONTRACT.
