  • There is nothing easier than this pear butter made entirely in a slow cooker. Simply place all of the ingredients in the cooker the night before and wake up to the aromas of fall. After a quick spin in the blender, this recipe is ready to can or freeze!

    ------------------------------
    INGREDIENTS
    - 10 lb pears
    - 2 tbsp lemon juice
    - 3 tbsp honey
    - 3 cinnamon sticks
    - 1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
    - 12 whole cloves, crushed
    - 6 whole cardamom pods, crushed
    - 3 vanilla beans (or 1 tbsp vanilla extract)
    INSTRUCTIONS
    - Cut ripe pears into quarters and remove the core. Slice roughly into ½-inch pieces and place in a 7- or 8-quart slow cooker. Add lemon juice, honey, cinnamon sticks, and ground ginger. Place cloves and cardamon pods in a small cheesecloth bag and add to the pears. Slice vanilla beans in half lengthwise and remove the seeds with the back of a knife. Add seeds and pods to the slow cooker. Turn the cooker on high for 8 hours.
    - After 8 hours, remove the lid and cook an additional 1-4 hours to cook off excess liquid.
    - Once most of the liquid has cooked off, turn off the slow cooker and cool for 30 minutes. Blend in a blender in batches until smooth, 1-2 minutes.
    - At this point, if freezing the pear butter, pour into airtight freezer containers and freeze. If canning in a water bath, bring the pear butter to a simmer on the stove.
    - Remove and pour into sterilized 8-ounce canning jars. Fit with prepared lids and rings. Boil in a water bath for 10 minutes, making sure jars are covered by at least 1 inch of water.
    - After 10 minutes, remove from the water bath and allow the jars to cool for 12-24 hours. The lids should seal within 1-2 hours. Any that do not seal can be placed in the refrigerator and used.

My grandmother made pear pie instead of apple pie. She also made pear perseveres and added a can of crushed pineapple to mix. The type of pear tree she had was a kieffer pear tree. Kieffer pears are very hard and only good for baking and cooking. Thanks

We just finished 36 pints of pears that’s enough for us this year. But now I can make this pear butter with the remaining pears.

Whaaaat? I'm brand new to your channel and actually made pear butter from your apple butter recipe last week. I'm allergic to apples and Hubby grew up eating apple butter, so this is what we came up with. Thanks for the video! I'll definitely be trying this exact recipe soon.

Love your recipes! I just read how you renovated you kitchen in the fall This Old House Magazine. I've always loved the part that we can see on camera, but seeing the pictures of your whole kitchen (before and after) , I have to say I love everything that you did! Now I want my kitchen to look like that. I love the separate baking area! Thank you for everything you teach us

How do you NOT weigh 400 lbs Kaleb? This food you prepare is outstanding and so delish. I'm quite intrigued by this pear butter. However I only own a 4 qt crock pot. Is it OK to make a smaller batch since it's just me and my chubby hubby? But how many pears to do smaller batch? I can freeze it flat in baggies. I love freezing things flat. Takes no room at all. And K we love your recipes, your work ethic, and your love of all things good for us. And yes I'm making the most wonderful pork chops i saw before this recipe since my hubs adores cabbage in any color or shape. Haha. Love you too you adorable sweet guy

@ Wyse Guide, I need a little boosted reassurance: are you positive I can keep the skin on my ripe pears for this butter??? Will they break down enough that once blended you won’t see peel bits everywhere in the butter??

The Ball canning book calls for 6 lbs of pears and FOUR cups of sugar.
The pears this am at my local farmers market are very sweet.
I don’t think I need to add that much sugar.
I went with three, it’s reducing right now….I’m hoping once it reduces the true pear taste will remain and not taste like pear jello! 😐

For those who live out of town and only have powdered cardamom and cloves, any suggestion of an equivalency powdered? 1/4 tsp each maybe?
