  • This is day two of working with Millie. We still aren’t putting a ton of pressure on her, just introducing her to leash pressure and beginning to name commands. Notice my body positioning, my tone of voice, and my energy. With skittish dogs, the last thing you want to do is be overly friendly or bubbly. Even high-pitched voices can freak these dogs out. We work the dogs in a very neutral manner in order to keep the energy calm and relaxed. Millie is learning to follow my lead, and although she’s still nervous, it’s a huge step in the right direction. We see dogs like her all the time, and the more we just work with them, the more the relationship grows. We build a bond through mutual trust and communication through the leash. I am not trying to be her friend, I am leading her in a way she understands. This is just the start, can’t wait to keep you all updated on this girl.

Excellent video, Jeff. My pandemic dog is so excitable. You have helped me more than all these other videos with “normal” dogs.

Is there a video for collar and leash training for a dog who is very fearful of a collar?

probably not specifically but we talk about counter conditioning a lot on our show and at our seminars and if you need to do a 1/1 online consult our website has that information.

This is my dog! After two years he still backs away from me and is very fearful of my roommate. He will bolt when anything happens. Very sad that he can't get past his fears. I have tried alot of different trainer. He is better then when I first got him. His fear seems better for a period of time then turns bad for a few weeks then seems to get better. Is this normal?
    Thanks

working with fearful dogs is actually a skill set and a lot of it goes against what your heart will tell you to do. We work with a lot of them and have tried numerous approaches and its like solving a complex problem most of the time.

@@SolidK9Training Thanks, now this is the key I am missing. Do you still have openings in San Jose next week? It's about an 8 hour drive but I am willing to get help for my dog. To learn how to teach my dog to overcome fear. It's heart breaking for me to see each day. We move forward a little and go backwards alot.
