      Bass guitar too. I love how in the pocket the bassist is at some points with the drummer. They definitely feed off each other.

    The “chorus” / outro / 2nd part though the simplest part technically is just so aurally profound it literally still makes the hairs on my arm stand even after all these years.

      And playing it feels like an amazing reward/triumphant finish after the more technically demanding first half the of the song. Getting to that point always felt like “FUCK YEAH now for the fun part B)”

      Nah. I mean yeah that's part of it but Mark Michell is just phenomenally talented. A lot of his tone comes from the EMG pickups he uses. His tone hasn't change a hell of a lot from when he used to play a Spector with the same pups.

    so i looked at the comments before listening and people were complaining about how "sloppy" the performance was. have you actually ever listened to ANY jazz drumming EVER? for goodness sake, just because pat has the chops to improvise in such a tightly structured song as this does NOT mean it's sloppy. i did not hear one part of sloppiness the entire time. get cultured, people.

  • @TheCzar93
    @TheCzar93 10 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    To all of you who are saying "this is sloppy","why aren't they playing as tight?","the drummer is off",etc.....Just.Stahp.
    What is so great about sounding EXACTLY like your record?I love the fact that there is audible differences,this is a jam afterall and a live performance not a perfect playthrough.And as for Pat hesitating,he isn't.It's called changing it up/improvising -_- Not once did he get out of time and change the flow of the song,only added to it and spiced it up a bit.Hell,he seems to be having lots of fun here since it's not 100% like the album.

      To show that you can play the material you created live? Lol it's apart of professional musicianship. If you and others don't mind the way he plays live, that's totally okay and everyone has different standards. However, he is pretty sloppy and isn't too tight. Everyone makes mistakes here and there, we're human beings. To be fair this trumps most live acts in this genre though.

    I have no idea why everyone is saying this is sloppy. Just because the drummer is improvising and they have more a jazz approach does not make this sloppy, its actually pretty fucking incredible. C'mon guize, lets not loose sight of the jazz influences

    Never heard recorded version before. I didn't hear any mistake. They played with no sign of feeling difficult and very enjoying

  • @uwotm
    @uwotm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Jazz drummers would do this all the time, and not just the drummers, but most jazz musicians would play every show differently. Personally the drummer is adding so much more flavour in this performance than the recorded version and i think this sounds way more fluid and interesting. After hearing this version the recording is almost...lacking....

    • @uwotm
      @uwotm 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What people are not appreciating is the difference between "recorded" and "live". Now personally, like possibly some of you, when i want to listen to THIS song, rather than the entire album, i come to this video. Its because of the difference in recording and live. Now, granted, there are many people whom prefer the sound of a nice recorded track, and i do too. But to those of you trying to call this sloppy, its granted that to those of u making this criticism are using a criteria of judgement which is based on the predisposition of recorded sound.
      Here is the difference as to why this drummer would never play this type of improvised fills and accents in a recorded setting, and it has nothing to do with rhythm (in the sense that its not on time, because it is on time, no one fucks up).
      If this drummer tried improvising these fills in a studio it would be a nightmare. All the different accents and cymbals being used requires more input into a microphone that needs to be edited and mastered. Christ, 13 song album with that much richness is a lot of sound to master.
      Now, the album this song derives from, if you listen carefully, the drums are relatively simple in comparison with this live version. You may want to say its sloppy for one of two reasons either 1. It doesn't sound like the original track, or 2. Its off time and throws you off. Both these claims are flawed in two reasons, the former being more a complex appreciation of recorded sound, the latter a lacking in understanding of basic rhythm.
      For the first claim, i think its justified. Yes this doesn't sound like the recorded version and the drummer is just filling. But here's the thing, you're entitled to your judgement of what is right and what is wrong, sure. But lets discuss intrinsic value of music. I would pose the question to you, "would you rather musicians play what they want, or what is told to them by a recording engineer?". If you answer yes to this question, then i say its possible you dont appreciate jazz and blues roots in accordance with where these sounds who influenced these young men come from. Jazz and blues were music of the poor and weary to which there was no prescribed key signature and rhythm, it was merely a respect for the instruments to play. Instruments have versatility and complex aspects to them to which if you "record" it, you are merely capturing a moment in time and space, and not making any definition of that sound, but merely capturing an image of it. Therefore a recording is just a snapshot of the possibility of what those instruments are possible of. Now in sound engineering, when you're paying upwards of 500$ a track, to compress these sounds is a lot of fucking work and time, hence the hefty price range, and when u have some drummer doing random fills, that although sound good, are not really in the best interest of EVERYONE involved in the process.
      However, to consider these fills, which melodically accent and are in time with everyone else in this live performance, why the fuck would u consider it "bad" to be "sloppy" on a live performance, because what you mean by "bad" is just "not what they recorded, and by sloppy you mean "not on time" when it clearly is.
      All im saying is that expressive judgments are always fair by nature of the fact that, with all relevant evidence we can rationally disagree about those judgments. But those expressive judgments are based on particular criteria's which are guided by intrinsic values. If we share the same intrinsic value of good sounding music, then all im suggesting, essentially, is that your criteria doesnt apply as well to your own intrinsic values, as mine does.

    • @usaflagraybans
      @usaflagraybans 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Aiman AbdJalil No. It's pretty common for a player to put their pick in their mouths so that they don't have to worry about dropping it, especially if they're using more than one finger on their picking hand to tap. Tosin Abasi does the same thing. I even do it when I'm finger picking and need to go to a pick immediately.

      It isn't absolutely flawless but they interpret the song about as good as any professional group out there. Not to mention, the guitarists are playing with zero gain; every tiny "mistake" they make is magnified. just because you have high standards doesnt make you wrong or have a sandy vag, but imho your standards are way too high

    • @JohnCrichton
      @JohnCrichton 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I LOVE StS, they are easily my favorite band but they are a bit sloppy live. I've seen them twice now once watching Pat to his right who messed up frequently and another time right in front of Chris who was for the most part very good but had a few flubs and mistakes here and there. I think Pat has trouble sort of playing through songs on his own feel. He's got no emotion, no feeling in his drumming unless he plays a song that's got a lot for him to work with.
      Anyways, I like them because their studio albums sound amazing and their song writing is some of the best I've ever heard, even the drums are great. I've seen them live, and they are MORE than acceptable as a live performance.
