    What blew my mind is that Lewis and Clark had a pcp air rifle with them on their expedition. They regularly put on shooting demos for the natives which is what prevented their party from being slaughtered. So cool.

      a 22 shot, .46 cal round ball, semi-auto air rifle no less! 800 psi, 40 shots or so per fill, 1500 pumps on a bike pump to refill it.

      I learned this recently also.
      I always thought air rifles were a new concept, but they've been around since the 1500s. And I could see why they would be an attractive alternative to muskets considering how many shots you can get off in between refilling the tank, and how accurate and effective they were. For a while they were more accurate than the typical black powder rifle. You would have to manually refill the tanks with a pump similar to one you'd use for a bike which would take a bit of time, but some of them had tanks that you could remove and swap for a pre-filled tank and continue shooting.

      @@party4lifedude If you think about it, most guns work the same way, it's just that those burning gunpowder generate the high pressure on demand and per bullet, while air rifles get it from elsewhere and store it. In many ways that can be to their advantage. They even featured in the original Sherlock Holmes stories, where the sinister Moriarty assassins used air rifles because of their quiet operation. No match, of course, for the crafty Holmes who fitted his windows with metal blinds to ward off their pellets.

      Lewis and Clark stayed safe with no injuns attacking them because they gave a demonstration to each tribe they met. It took one thousand pumps to fill it. After loading, with just a flick of the bolt it charged and loaded the next round. I don;t know why they don't make modern versions.
      Also, Napoleon had standing orders that if anyone was caught with an air rifle they were to be put to death immediately. Air rifle men would sneak into camps and pick off the officers .

      Nail guns dont work that way (hollywood bs), they have multiple safeties, but its a air hammer design so if you bypassed them it still would just drop to the ground after a few feet. But ya you can buy full auto air guns. They kinda suck though. The gas density is limited in the expansion chamber and a portion of the energy is used in the blowback to cycle the next projectile/pellet/BB/round whatever.

    • @EnhancedCognition
      @EnhancedCognition ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nitrojunki4249 I have a few, My favorite right now is the FX Airguns Dynamic .35 cal which essentially fires a .357 round at 200 foot lbs of energy which is the cut off limit for what most states want for dear hunting. But, here is the thing, they can be pushed to 300ft/lbs with a longer barrel (traps more energy) which will have a clean pass through from both ribs and both lungs for a humane kill. There are of course more powerful PCP air rifles out their, but most with energy beyond that right now are single shot (big bore guns), whereas this one is semi/auto with anywhere between 10 and 20 rounds per clip. Another good one to consider are the western air rifles rattler and/or sidewinder if you just so happen to want full auto ...

    I've got the .45 version. Nice, accurate gun that's dirt cheap to shoot, especially if you catch the lead and recast it. I tend to use mine with a 295 grain hollow-base bullet. One thing with air guns is that, since the pressure is constant, they absorb the energy more efficiently as the bullet gets heavier.
    Oh, and there are magazine-fed variants. I've also got a 9mm one that takes 5 round stick magazines. Gets 30-40 shots on a charge depending on how high I set the pressure dial. Of course, I don't have a fill tank, so I have to use a hand pump... That's a bit of a workout...
    I haven't seen any full-auto ones larger than 25 caliber, but it wouldn't surprise me if they exist somewhere.

  • @oscarspark2396
    @oscarspark2396 8 ปีที่แล้ว +237

    Here's the idea bro: take two dummies, find an old ass car, put one dummy in driver's seat and the 2nd one right behind it. Take a 50 cal and shoot from the back, right through the trunk. You can even try different calibers - all the way from hand guns to 50 cal. I was always curious how good will a 50 cal (and other calibers as well) penetrate through the car and two potential passengers)). I know it might sound weird, but might end up being a cool video. If it works out, I'd be giving you some great ideas ;)

I am for sure going to upgrade to a higher caliber in the future. The fact that the airrifle in your video shoots arrows too is an added bonus. I have missed shooting and after many consults with attorneys I decided to take the plunge and scratch the shooting itch. It's not the same as a real gun, but fun anyway.

    • @darkminer64
      @darkminer64 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      helium is much lighter than nitrogen and oxygen (AKA air) therefor it goes much faster (less resistance).
      there, I explained it for you.

    • @tangerian319
      @tangerian319 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      well, the physics behind it is much MUCH more complicated than that. It has NOTHING to do with density per say, it has to do with the physical size of the atoms, Helium is much MUCH smaller than molecules in air, and thus do not run into each other as frequently, and thus can impart more energy into the projectile much more effectively. There's a video on youtube, probably like a hundred of them that explains it much, much better than I care to do in a comment.
      Either way, whether I'm right or you are, it would still be one hell of an interesting experiment to run with this weapon, given that there are air rifles out there that use helium (or even Hydrogen) to have a muzzle velocity that reaches close to orbital velocities, which is crazy. not saying that the air rifle featured in this video would be able to do that, but... there are these rifles out there.

    Some years back, someone came out with a rubber tube powered air rifle designed to shoot 50 cal. wire darts. They were subsequently outlawed in Ca. as idiots were taking them out and shooting highway works. Supposedly, they would easily penetrate and bullet proof vest. I've always wanted to get my hands on one. I have owned a 5 mil. cal. Sheridan for years and have brought game done with it. It's a really good, well made air rifle. I take 177 cal. wire darts and grind down the nibs til it just fits into the barrel of my 5 mil.. It will bury a 6 in. wire dart all but up to the last 1/2 in a four by four at far distance. If you should have information on where to acquire a 50 cal. air gun, please share. Thx.

    One small point of fact: the ATF does not make any laws. They only enforce existing laws. Some of that enforcement involves trying to interpret the law, which can change over time, but that is not the same as enacting legislation.

      Just for clarification, If you want an external silencer in this gun, it must be registered with the ATF, since it can be used in a firearm too. Unless you make it part of the rifle, wich in this case is not a firearm. Hence all those air rifles with shouldered barrels : all the barrel is enclosed by a tube with bafles, ant that tube cannot be used in other kind of gun.

      to be fair, it's not too common where you hear about someone who's both a vet, and hunts. But, if you think about it, it does make a certain amount of sense. Many hunters are big into wildlife conservation and the like, You save the babies so that the biggest and strongest ones can then make more babies, some of which you might manage to hunt and make a stew with. But if you let the babies die, you might well not have any squirrels for the stew eventually.

      @@Lil96millie Keep in mind, you will want a compressor to fill your main airtank, not a regular compressor either. Don't get me wrong, I love airguns, but you will need that compressor, and power to run it(some will run on 12v). If you have a decent sized tank, you could go a good while before refilling though. They do have high pressure bicycle type pumps, so, you could fill the rifle itself with that..it is a good workout, in a pinch, it's doable. That rifle might take 3-400 strokes, and you have to put some weight into it.

    They make plenty of bolt action, or semi auto big bore air rifles, the power is really impressive, the Evanix Max Ml for example has 150j of power in .357 semi or even full auto, can kill a wild pig with that no problem. Can be very usefull for home protection becouse in many countries they arent classified as firearms, would love to see more airguns on this awesome show. Matt keep up the good work! I'd like to see more airguns on your channel Matt and here's why..... in a wtshtf scenario an airgun will be a highly effective way to feed your family. And as you can see with big bore airguns you can take out larger game. Also hatsan makes a big bore break barrel rifle in .30 cal. Its considered the most powerful break barrel on the market! Of course they don't compare to actual firearms but good luck stocking up on ammo these days! With an air gun you can easily carry 500 rnds on your person. Now I'm not saying as a replacement but a back up and it's better to have it and not need it. And as far as fully automatic they are available in high end serious pcp versions down to back yard friendly fun plinkers. Just food for thought brother

A tank the size of that can leave some hefty shrapnel, fly up into the sky and land on some poor dude, explode, and plenty of other things I can imagine happening. To be sure it won't do anything too bad he'd probably have to embed it in a river bank or something, and then we won't be able to see the full reaction.

      really this is stipulation based on where you live and what your doing with its shooting at range or on private land generally silencers have no restrictions but as states legalize hunting on game land the ability for state to state laws will differ thus making it legal to hunt with a pretty silenced air gun or requiring a permit for a silencer any one in the air until community will know we don't used the term silencer... moderator or ldc is the most common term as an airgun add on are not interchangeable to standard firearms material unless user modified

    I used to think air rifles were a relatively new concept, but they've been around since the 1500s. Like someone pointed out here, even Lewis and Clark used one in their expeditions in the Americas. I can see how air guns were an attractive alternative to muskets, although you would need to spend quite some time filling the tanks manually with something resembling a bike pump, between filling tanks you can get quite a few shots off without reloading and they were more accurate.

  • @rosicroix777

    Great Video ! This air gun suprised me , looks well built as well . For the fact you could put 5 shots on target in under a minute is impressive as well . If you get the chance to go hunting with it please let us know how well it preformed . An air gun this powerful reminds me of the air gun Lewis & Clark took with them on their expedition . They amazed the tribes that they visited with it & actually killed a few buffalo with it as well . I was happy when companies started putting out .22 airguns that were capable of hunting small game & later hearing of guys creating 30 caliber guns that worked well . This is great though , .50 caliber is impressive regardless of how it travels downrange . TY again & keep up the great work .

      Your Mother Trust me the barrel is going to be the easiest think, im more worried about the air because i dont think it can give the gun enought power to make the bolt slide back and put another bullet in position to fire + the air is going to be runing out like crazy

    • @diamondflaw
      @diamondflaw 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Had an idea for spring actuation to move bolt to open position and then air charge to fire round would move bolt back into closed position... all energy from compressed air would be discharged down the barrel that way and the bolt would immediately retract as soon as the pressure was expelled. The trick then becomes making a catch so that the bolt return can't happen until the pressure is fully relieved... Why am I doing your design work for you - I should build this thing.
