Stability control lights: Assuming you have good tires, when and why do they pop up?

- We discuss the various Stability Control lights, and how and why you might see them illuminated on your instrument panel -- even when there's nothing wrong. This assumes you have good tires. There are three distinct situations that may result in one of these lights being illuminated, and unlike ANY other warning light, this one will come on to indicate that the system is doing its job! Watch our demonstrations.
We'll add that worn tires can contribute to this light activating more often than they should, so do check your tread depth -- or have someone knowledgeable do so.
We'll also add that some manufacturers add control of engine power to their systems. So if you are actually slipping, you may experience a power loss. Engine power will be restored when control is restored.

The video discusses the normal appearance of the light. Your Nissan needs a proper fault diagnosis at a qualified service shop. It is not possible to diagnose remotely. Good luck!

I saw this light come on when I was parking my 2008 Lexus IS250 on a weirdly paved and angled street. It went on briefly for like 1 or 2 seconds and now I never seen it again. It’s gone, never seen it happen after I left the parking spot and drove normally. Now, I once had it never go off with the VSC and ABS light on. What it ended up being was a Wheel speed sensor went bad.
Don't actually see a question here, but it all sounds quite normal. And the bad sensor shut down multiple systems which were restored on repair...

Does anyone know if it’s ok to drive with the check engine light/traction control and epc light on? Mechanic suggests to get rid of it (bad code on the engine thing). I am getting rid of it: however, I have to make a 10 mile round trip errand tomorrow. The car runs, is it safe?
IF the car runs normally, it is PROBABLY ok to drive. But clearly the engine problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible to prevent serious damage...

Check ya battery wire!! Before doing anything. Mines was doing this for a year. I had my fog lights put on n realize after the fact n tighten it n its good ever since dodge

Its not on the dash the check engine light on but i have the code p1521 on but change the oil engine and oil pressure for the code also
@@mopar9656 Well, that is an oil code on a European car, but US. Have a good mechanic look into. A serious code no matter which auto maker. Good luck!

That's NOT supposed to happen. Sounds more like an engine issue and likely as not the check engine light is or was on as well...
Mine came on for a little after being parked with my front left tire turned to the left sharp while parked. Is that okay?
Likely yes. One wheel likely slipped on the paint used as markings. Less traction available on paint. Keep an eye out and make sure you have good tread on the tires.

Ok, the English is broken, but it sounds like an engine problem, not stability control. Fix the engine and the stability control will turn back on and the light will go out...

Too many possibilities. Is it accidently turned off? (look for a switch) Are other lights on? Did the car hit a pot hole or curb recently? Beyond this, a hands-on diagnosis is needed from a good tech...
My nissan note engine light is on and power lag issue..scanned the vehicle and find cam shaft and turbo charger,peddal sensors issue.. and we changed camshft sensor still the same.. while i drive in slopes or hill lag of power and traction control lights also came on.. not identified in garage plz advise
Sorry, this needs a hands on diagnosis. If you didn't use a dealership to do the scan, that's the way to go. We all have trust issues with them, but they have the experience. In the meantime, continue to search TH-cam for the SPECIFIC symptoms. Also, any vacuum leaks??
My stability control comes on whether its wet or dry then the car automatic slows down and I have to break Then Car will Go. What would cause that? Abs sensor was shown bad replaced it and still shows need replacing and car still does same thing.
Not enough to go on here, but I'm going to guess that the check engine light is also on and an engine issue needs to ne diagnosed and addressed. Nothing else would slow down the car...

So where would the button be located on 2007 Audi Q7 3.6L V6 quattro to re set the ESP light ?
There is no reset button for ESP. There MAY be an off switch, but it should be clearly marked. I'm sorry to say that we don't have access to Audi manuals, so there is no way to look this up. However, it would be marked ESP, and I would expect to find it in the upper, center part of the dashboard. Finally, if the light stays on when the button is pressed, there is a fault in the system...

I have a 2016 Mustang Convertible. Nice looking car but DAMN, it's been to the dealer more than any car I've ever owned. Today as some other times, I get the traction light to indicate it's off but in addition, my brake light and the damn turn signal would not come on. Here's the problem I have, it's now out of warranty and I just don't trust the dealership anymore as this ain't the first time this has happened. I have a very good mechanic, last time I had the oil changed, I had him check the diagnostics but no codes! This Mustang has been a nightmare. I've totaled $5,000 in warranty work since I purchased it Certified used in 2017 at one year old. If this is the norm, avoid like the plaque!!!
Sounds like a brake problem overall. The stability control will stay off until its resolved. The turn signal is likely just an unrelated anomaly...

Not very likely. Far more likely a fault in the system.

Sorry, no, the trouble code will need to be read. But, the engine light being on is likely WHY the stability control light is on. The engine trouble light likely shut down the stability control.

I have one Hyundai Elantra 2017 I have the code P0014, P0017 and P0335 in my car I change crankshaft, coils, spark plugs, clean transmission....but every time if i try drive my traction light illuminate and my car stop.
Wow. A lot unpack. First, the traction control light is not relevant. Clearly an engine issue, so the check engine light is on too, yes?? Or an EPC (power control) light? Resolve this and the other goes away. Frankly, it sounds electrical -- a relay somewhere, but trust your dealer to be able to figure this out! They know the product best...
Thank you sir for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Perhaps you have some insights on my particular situation. I have a Dodge caravan with an odd problem. Occasionally when I start the engine, the traction control light AND the check engine light stay on. This is BEFORE I even put it in gear. When driving, I experience an obvious loss in power and struggle to reach 60 mph. When I then pull over and shut off my engine, wait a minute and restart the engine, the Traction Control light will go out but the check engine light will remain on. Now it will drive normally and I can once again reach 60 mph easily. In fact, I can put the pedal to the floor and accelerate rapidly, which I could NOT do previously. After a while, the check engine light will go out as well, and the vehicle operates just fine. What do you think???
Wow, sorry, but that will need someone hands on. However, I can say that the traction control (likely off) light is on because the engine has a problem. The problem is resolved, so the car runs normal and the traction control is back on (light out). However, the car knows somethings needs to be checked out, so the check engine light stays on. Make sense?
Bottom line, you need a good mechanic/auto shop...

Because it is so intermittent, I'm going to check all wiring connections to my wheel speed sensors and also see if something might need to be cleaned. Sometimes the most perplexing problems have the simplest solutions. I'm hoping anyway. Thanks again.

Im having trouble with my 2016 ford ranger. The lights popups randomly then car brakes suddenly. Need to stop the engine to turn off the light, otherwise car will almost brakes everytime when i exceed certain speed. Been to several mechanics but all have same answer, checked the system with no faulty sensor, nothing unusual. I even changed the tyres to a new one and did an allignment but the problem is still there. Any advice?
Yes! Find better mechanics! If I understand correctly, the truck is braking on its own, yes? THAT needs to be the focus. Fix the brakes (have u seen an ABS light??)...

What u actually need is a good mechanic. Assuming the light is on alone, there is a failure in one of many systems involved. Find someone u trust!!
I saw this light briefly flash at me when i made a right turn up a hill that looks like it wasn’t paved evenly at some parts on the corner. So this light is normal to go on like that ? It’s basically just a small annoying warning? I wasn’t even driving that fast at all Around the corner too. It’s that sensitive? Now when I turn on the car that light isn’t on. If it was stuck on then I know there’s a deeper issue but there are no lights on my dashboard right now. The ABS light didn’t go off the same time this traction light went off.
Honestly, yes, just an annoying light seen when a wheel slips. I would caution only to make sure your tires are good -- they'll slip more as they wear...

My 2011 Mitsubishi lancer traction controll turns off on it's own and can't turn it on unless I restart the car also my cruise control stopped working too idk if they have anything to do with one another? Any help much appreciated!
An interesting question not asked before. So its not so much that the cruise control is the issue. What caused the cruise control failure likely is. Its not much help, but diagnose the cruise control problem and the other will likely resolve.
Glad I found this video. My 2010 Chevy Colorado has been doing this for months and my brakes pump sometimes. I think I figured the problem and the best I could come up with is that my steering sensor is triggering that. I also think I may need to replace my drum brakes. Is there a way I could turn the stabilitrak or what do you think is causing my truck to pump it's brakes sometimes when I brake? Thanks.
If your brakes pump on their own, forget about steering sensors, etc. and get that fixed. Brake booster or ABS...

I have a 2011 Chevy avalanche and this randomly pops up when i go over 30mph and struggles to get into 6th gear when on the highway. I had a mechanic look at it and replaced my spark plugs and gas pump because he said fuel pressure wasnt consistent. But even after that my truck still has the lights coming on
You're saying lights, so I imagine the Check Engine light is one of them. You need s proper diagnosis from a top notch mechanic. You may not like it, but a Chevy dealer with a good reputation would be the way to go...

There are two things telling you the system needs service. Any warning light with a wrench in it says this, and you have it. Plus, the light stays on. With stability control, this is always an indicator or a system problem. It needs hands on diagnosis. Any damage done recently? Accident, BIG pothole, or??
I have a 2017 Dodge Charger. It was running fine I have not had any warning lights come on. I stepped into the store the car would not start. This locked in park now and won’t move. I’ve reset the battery but I don’t know what could have caused it to not start. It turns on but does not start if that makes sense
Interesting video you found under the circumstances. Anyway, turns on, but does not start suggests there is power but the engine is not turning over, yes? I can only speculate, but at first blush, make absolutely sure that the transmission really is in park and try again. Otherwise, a hands-on diagnosis will be necessary. Best of luck...
Good evening! I have a 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS. I was hoping if you can help me out! I driving today and hit a bump that caused my car to bounce up and down. The vsc off light then came on. Do you know what would of caused that light to come on? I also have the vsc light on as well but I believe that comes and goes. I just recently purchased this car from the son of the only owner.

My mom's 2014 dodge avenger traction control light stays on and her electronic throttle body light comes on throwing it in limp mode hopefully changing the throttle body will fix the light's.
Can't verify a diagnosis from here, but its clear that stability control will remain disabled (light on) until the engine issue is fixed. Best of luck...

Well, the light on all the time indicates a problem with the system. It is not functioning, so be careful in bad weather, etc. You will need a good mechanic.
I have a 2017 challenger, and the light came up, but the issue is that the wheel drags a bit to the left.. only when goin under 5mph anything higher it’s normal. Should I just take it to shop to make sure nothing is wrong
Absolutely yes. Sounds like a pot hole or curb bent something that will, at minimum, eventually cost you a tire. Or worse...

You don't. If there is no other warning light, the system needs to be serviced. Otherwise, the system may be turned off. If you hit the button on the dash to turn it on, the light will go out. Any accidents recently? Even hitting a pothole can knock things out of whack...

Hi one two. Well this sounds like a transmission or axle problem, and not a traction or stability control issue. Of course, it will take an actual hands on examination to properly diagnose. Don't wait -- it will likely get worse and could be quite dangerous.
While driving in slippery conditions my stubbylee light came on and hasn't gone off
Its discovered a fault in the system. Have it looked at as soon as possible...
Even if you turn it off it will come back on automatically when you go above 60Mph.
Have the alignment checked...

I changed break pads and outer tire rod then the light was on after changed everything, so could you tell me whats going on ? Why is on now ?
First, its possible a sensor was disconnected or damaged during the repairs. Second, was the car aligned after the tie rod was replaced?? If not, that's the problem!! If yes, then you used a repair shop (sounded like you did this on your own) and they should have a look at their work...
I have a 2012 Chrysler T&C after half and hour i drive, light turns ON and stay like that all the time the car is on if the van is off like 2 or 3 hours light goes OFF again.
Impossible to say. Clearly something that needs a hands on diagnosis. So long as that light stays on, the benefit of stability control is unavailable.
Mine flickered on my Pacifica when I started to skid and after correcting the skid by letting off the brake or whatever I, as the driver needed to do on my part, it would stop flickering which let me know, and I could feel, I was now fine. I don't think people really believe it means anything more than what it really means..that the car is engaging stability control and helping you to become safe quickly. In my Pacifica, it's simply referred to Traction Control with the same symbol of a skidding car as the button- meaning turn it on to avoid skids, not turn it on and you WILL skid now! Who would think an auto manufacturer purposely installed a button that when pressed will make you start skidding out of control to purposely kill you? LOL.
I drive a Hyundai now and it is always engaged which makes me feel even more safe opposed to realizing I forgot to turn it on after I felt I was starting to skid. Cars can slip just as easily is rain, on gravel in the summer in bright sunlight, and on leaves or other debris in the road. I don't get why anyone would want to turn it off! I would also add that you should never turn it OFF while it is actively controlling or correcting your steering because it can cause your car to go crazy and then you WILL be driving out of control.
That last sentence it truly important. Do not turn Stability Control off while it is doing its job!
My arcadia traction light came on then 2 days later the abs light came on then after that came on 1 day later the brack light came. All in 4 day
They are all related -- and serious. PLEASE have a good mechanic check your brakes in particular...

Ok, please read this carefully. "...with the traction control?" YES! However, I think you mean with the traction control light on (which means the traction control is off). Then you CAN, but VERY carefully. Further, I am 99% sure you need to check your tires. Worn tires in the rain are worse than no traction control. Please check them or have them checked ASAP and drive carefully...
What can be done if it happens that whenever you switch on a car all dash signs appears and disappears but for VDC and Airbag not seen at all? ? While they should appear and dissapears as others do?
They should indeed, as a test. I'm afraid that only a hands on check can resolve the problem...

Well, the first thing to do is go back to where it was aligned and tell them the same thing you just told us!!!
I did. They said they did nothing to cause that. They install 2 front tires too. Now they're saying is the plugs n coils. That was change 2 months ago. Took it to a different mechanic n he says its the fuel pump. That was change 2 months ago. Confused

Sorry to say that I have little familiarity with Opel products. I would say however, the light likely means a service is needed. The light never has a shut off. The system does.

Actually, as a system, its life saving. As a warning light, not so much. Highly recommend having it repaired.
Get your owners manual!!! Follow what the manufacturers suggestions are not the dealer!! And you will avoid 90% of all these issues!!! Garuanteed!!!
Yeah my mazda 6 2016 sport just had the engine came on wit that lil light also. It's snowin here. Car slowed down. I stopped and parked light went out but now my engine is still on
Again it's snowin the light wasn't flicking it was solid then went out and didn't come on my car was slippin alil n was gave it to much gas to accelerate

2013 G37x - Mine stays on the entire drive every drive for some reason. Also the emergency brake light (red bold letters saying "BRAKE") comes on during and acceleration then will shut off again. Idk why that comes on even though the emergency brake is off.
There's a brake issue. Address it and the stab control will reactivate (and the light will go out).
My car has aftermarket CNG. And it shows traction control ON and engine light ON most of the times. And automatically it goes off. The mechanics have chaged the tappet covers as there were oil in the spark plugs. Buy again this happens. Plz suggest a way out
Sorry, but this is an engine issue. So long as the problem remains, stability control remains turned off (warning light on!). Fix the overall engine problem, and stability control function will be restored. Best I can offer...
For me, this happens when I don't screw the fuel cap all the way in when filling up my tank.
I bought a Pontiac g6 gt 2007 the traction control light turns on and off by itself and every now and then the ABS light will turn on and off also with the traction control light. My traction control button doesn’t work tho I’ve tried turning it off but it won’t. So I’ve been driving the car it hasnt been a problem the traction control will come on when times I skid the tires and go to fast and after awhile the car will turn off the traction control by itself. I live in Canada so there’s lots of snow so my traction control is always on but when I turn off my car and my car turns on again on concrete it won’t have traction control on. So I think the system works just the button to turn it off doesn’t work can I drive like this thru the winter ?

Yes. What you've said tells me the check engine light is on. So the trac or stab control is turned off (light on). It will be restored once the misfire is addressed...
So I have two stability control symbols apparently. I noticed it was on and remained solid while I was driving home. I decided to hit the stability control button thinking I had knocked it but then it had the same symbol with the word off attached to it. The other one also remained in place, which made two of them on at the same time. Both are the skidding car but one specifically says off and the other doesn’t. There is no flashing but it’s just constantly illuminated. Any ideas as to what could cause this?
Well, without intending to be trite, an actual problem with the system. However, the two lights sounds suspiciously like a Japanese branded product. Is the check engine light on as well?? If so, stability control will stay off (lights on) until the engine issue is resolved...
So I went to the store today and I made a right turn and the DBC downhill brake control light and the ESP electronic stability programme both turned on. When I try to put the car in park it wouldn't shift into park only drive and neutral. So I pressed the release button so I can put the car in park and I shut the car off. Now I cant turn my car on. All the lights come on but the car wont fully turn on. What could be happening? What should I do?
What release button did you press? Also, what is the make, model and year?

I have a 2016 chrysler town & country. On several occasions the stability control light comes on at start up and won't let the shifter go into any gear. Any help it's appreciated.
Well, there is little that can be offered remotely, but I will say this. Any issue with stability control will NOT cause an issue with the transmission or anything else. I suspect that there is another warning light on as well. It will be the one that needs attention.
My mum was driving her van home today and the ESC light came on while she was on the highway. The van slowed down and wouldn't accelerate, the brake pedal got firm and wouldn't go down and the steering wheel locked up! She got stranded! A few days ago the engine light came on, but it went out on it's own. Now THIS! I dunno, I'm stumped!
This is an engine problem, and actually sounds like the car shut down. The steering wheel doesn't lock up otherwise. You'll need a REALLY good garage and you might check the NHTSA site for recalls on the car...

@@zephyr332 Ah, that explains it. Likely as not LOTS of lights came on (the engine DID shut down), but stability control is the scariest looking light and gets the attention...
@@DashboardSymbols The engine light was on a few days ago. It was lit for 2 days and then it went out - then yesterday it broke down. The engine light could've been the alternator sending an S.O.S. !!
No accident s lot of pot hoes it comes on when i hit the break s when i turn the car on its off after a bit it comes back on
There may be damage at a wheel, but it will need professional help. Don't delay -- its important tech.

Well, first, make sure it isn't simply turned off (check the manual). Second, is there another light on?? If yes, start there. Finally, has anything changed? Hit a pot hole? A curb? etc...

For me the light comes on for no reason and then loses power. I've been to a number of garages, but I don't know exactly what the problem is. Is there an issue with the sensor?
This has to be the check engine light not the stability control light yes?? And if both are on, deal with the engine light only!!
I have a 2017 equinox. My Traction Light and Stabili Track Light came on yesterday. Felt like a rubber band pull first, then the Traction Light and Stabili Track. It drove home fine but I parked it. I need help with this.
And it will need to be hands-on help and diagnostics. it "feels" like a steering problem, but truly not possible to properly diagnose from a distance...

My car is a Jeep Compass 2007. The car turn on this light while I was driving and going at 45mph and when at stopped at a red light it would drive again. Like it was going so slow and I couldn’t accelerate I had to pull over and turn off the car and turned back on and it drove like normally again!
I have no idea why did that happen
Likely an electrical problem "reset" by the restart, but not a definitive diagnosis by any means. If it happens again, please have a good mechanic look into it.

Mine is coming on randomly. Even when sitting in park. Cleaned the speed censors and it seems to help it not happen as often but it is still doing it. Going to change the brakes (front & rear) and then go from there.
If the brakes need work, then yes. I doubt the light would come on while in park. Cleaning sensors was a great idea. Stay with it and let us know what happens! We'll pass it on...

I have the same thing. My abs light is on and emergency break. Along with the warning stabilitrak off. I have a 2010 captiva. My dealership says i have to release 2 computers but it is like 4000 to replace it. Do u think they are right or it could be something simpler to replace.
Really impossible to say from afar. But by all means get a second opinion from another qualified shop. Always possible that something simpler could be at fault...
I have a 2014 impala the stability track light comes on and engine reduced speed is on the dash as well as check engine it stay on for days on in then goes off and the check engine light is left on for a few days then it goes off and everything stays off for a week or two then starts all over again
This is ALL about an engine problem and it needs a hands-on diagnosis. Once the reason the check engine light comes on is properly addressed, all else will be resolved...
My epc and check engine light go out when i press the pedal down to start car stability control light comes on and car wont crank ! Back up lights come on in reverse so tps switch is working. Brake lights come on when brakes are applied so brake switch is working.
You've described some very odd sequences here and I'm not even sure there's a question. But I would start with the EPC...

So I have a 2012 Toyota Tacoma and the traction control light has been on for quite a while meaning traction control is off but it doesn’t let me turn it back on to get rid of the light on the dash, someone reversed and hit my passenger side messing up my wheel more then anything I got all the parts replaced including the wheel the frame around the engine bay was all straighten out but my steering wheel needs and alignment it’s angled to the left even though I’m going straight could that be the problem? Or what do you recommend I do? Luckily I live in California so no snow or really any heavy rain
I also have the tire pressure light on but all tires have been checked on pressure including the spare so I’m assuming that’s just a bad pressure sensor right?
My truck also did pass the smog check here in California with both those lights on so everything todo under the hood is in good shape
Yes, poor alignment won't allow TC to operate. And it will wear out your tires fast too...

It depends very much on the state, but it is possible, unless there is an obvious and serious problem with the brakes. Also, that light is often on because of a check engine light, in which case it won't pass. Don't take the chance -- repair the issue, whatever it is...

Nice video. Does the all time on icon has anything to do with the misaligned of the chassè ? Does one of the front ends of the chassè beams results in the traction sensor not properly engaging with the tire and causing the traction icon appears ? Is so would just balancing the wheels solve the problem ? Your answer is highly appreciated. Thanks
In short, yes. Bent frame components (if that is the issue) will be detected and the system will not function. So, the light stays on. Wheel balancing etc won't help.

Start with the tires. The light should be addressed regardless and it MIGHT be the cause of the traction light being on...

The check engine light on simply means there is a problem with the engine, most likely emission control system. It needs a hands on diagnosis. Once the engine issue is repaired, stability control light will no longer be seen...

hello today the light of the stabilititrak was turned on and the engine light too. I have in cadillac ats 2013. how can I remove it.
There's a problem with the engine. Get it resolved and the stabilitrak will come back on.
Start with air filter, and fuel injector cleaner in fuel tank then spark plugs regap or replace if to far gone
You remove it by serving the engine. A good tech needs to determine why the check engine light is on...
My cars traction control light is saying its off, but not flashing. Its not the button that turns the traction control on and off, its a sensor light. When i restart the car, after a second it comes back on without driving
Ok, can only guess here. Assuming there are no other lights on, the system has a problem that needs to be resolved. However, since it doesn't flash for a minute, I'm guessing another warning light is on (check engine, ABS, etc), which you didn't mention. Resolve the engine/brake/whatever problem and stability control will be restored.
@@DashboardSymbols it's actually turned itself off at this point. I feel like for some reason the rear taillight being out somehow might have messed with the sensors. But i guess problem solved, for now. Thank you for the response

This is clearly NOT a stability control issue. The check engine light is also on, yes? Address the engine issue. The stability control will go back on (and that light goes out).

Absolutely NOT normal. The light on steadily indicates a problem with the stability control system that will need a good service shop.
