Love this model for the most part, the only thing I’m having trouble getting over is the sound. Sounds a lot like a Paragon 3 Big Boy to me…
It is the sample version. They could tweak it.
Yeah. Imagine they’re just place holders.
I though the same thing and Im sure its the same or similar files but after running them side by side the Paragon 4 FEF does sound much better. Whistle is better, Bell is better and the chuff without the articulated rhythm sounds a heck of a lot better than the P3 Big Boy. If I get tired of it Ill just install Soundtraxx Big Steam.
Beautiful HO train, can wait to see those soon.
I just can't wait to see lionel model that union pacific railroad FEF-3 northern #844 as seen in this video with a single headlight on the front end all in three rail o scale with legacy style steam railsounds and all of the lionel legacy steam features including wireless tether connection between the steam locomotive and the tender, engineer and fire stoker figures, traction tires, die cast locomotive and tender bodies, pilot and trucks, directional lighting including operating headlights and backup lights, operating electro-coupler on the rear of the tenders, scale dummy coupler, interior illumination in the cab of the locomotive, road name and number specific crew talk dialog, six official railroad speeds with crew talk, dynachuff synchronized with 32 levels of intensity as the locomotive gains speed, bi-color marker lights, adjustable smoke output, fan driven smoke, legacy real time quilling whistle with 5 different whistles to choose from, single hit and/or continuous mechanical bell sounds complete with 5 levels of bell pitching, current speed and fuel dialog, refueling sounds, cab glass windows plus a lionel lines tender magnet available for separate sale and many other neat legacy steam features that can be seen in the lionel trains catalogs and of course the new and current look of union Pacific railroad FEF-3 844 with a single headlight on the front end will be licensed by union pacific railroad and the union pacific railroad will continue to be one of the lionel trains company's licensors for the lionel trains company's lifetime
Sweet trian James. Hope you're settling in smoothly in the new home!
I have BLI's Big Boy and Challenger and my FEF 844 will be here in a few days and I can't wait!
Excellent review-love the smoking whistle. BL makes wonderful engines with features. I want to see your brass passenger cars pulled by the 844-should be a wonderful sight.
This is going to be the best ho fef loco
Looks really good! I'm sure this will be the best FEF in the industry in terms of pulling power
I just learned a couple days ago that the Union Pacific 844 has a cast frame. Not some chintzy bolted together thing. That is extremely impressive
Cant wait to see the pre-prod model of the Reading T1 as a Pennsylvania native
I have three of their PCM Reading T1’s and a friend has all the surviving numbers in paragon 3, they might keep it looking the same just with paragon 4. Honestly, if the whistle is not correct on my BM&R 2102… Wowsound will find its way into that tender.
Have pre-ordered two for myself
Think you pre review was great
Good review…as always.
Oh ye! I gotta have it! Awesome review Jay!
Great review as usual. I wish BLI did these in silent. I’ve been installing TSU2-steam decoders…. Unbelievable, not too difficult and the performance increases quite a bit!
Great review, great model BLI!
Do you keep the paragon to power the smoke unit?
@@MikesProjectsandHobbiesMC The club I belong to does not allow smoking units on the layout. So I just eliminated the smoke unit altogether and just added a bigger speaker in the boiler.
@@markiewodi3371 Not huge in smoke either. It’s messy stuff after a while.
I know it was scheduled to come out this month in Dec 2021 I am curious if you have heard when this will be released.
This is definitely the better model but those sounds are so stale. Athearn's FEF sounds remain superior IMO. You're right about the missing water line on the tender, too.
It shouldn’t be too hard to install a Tsunami 2 decoder on a decoder buddy or TCS motherboard. Only thing I’d miss would be the smoking whistle.
Note that Athearn/Genesis while makes very detail and accurate steam locomotives,
It has been consistently very stingy of quality of decoders and speakers.
Athearn has been using a very cheap version of Tsunami with the cheapest possible speaker with 0.25 watts. The TSU decoder has ONE single physical function apart front an rear light. That is really trying to be cheap.
The Athearn/Genesis steam chuffs sound punny and lack the deeper chuff sounds of heavy or articulated should have.
That has been my experience with Athearn/Genesis Challenger and various SP MT-4s.
It looks as though they’re going to run the smoke unit fan slowly to simulate a blower when at rest. That’s good. So many of their steamers do not - the smoke just spills out over the rim of the stack when at rest.
Thats a simple CV change. Read the owner’s manual
CV218= Heating element temp at idle
CV219= Heating element temp while moving
CV232= How fast the fan spins at idle
CV233= How fast the fan spins when normal chuff sounds are playing
CV234= How fast the fan spins when the loaded chuff sounds are playing
CV235= How fast the fan spins when the steam cock chuff sounds are playing
CV236= How fast the fan spins when the rod knock sounds are playing
CV237= How long does the fan spin (duration of time during a chuff) before it goes back to the setting of CV232.
All of this is subjective and is up to the users' preference.
FWIW I just did a pull test on mine, 13.3 oz. Pretty freaking amazing.
Hopefully it would be a good one, i got my Broadway big boy couple yrs ago, a whole bunch of mechanical issues emerged when i got home n i had to send it back for repair, quite frustrating.
It would’ve been nice if they made a UP 8444 model but maybe they will in the future
I hope they release 844 with a mars light
Funny because every model in this release has a mars light except 844.
@@2railnation which is ridiculous 🙄
Interesting that Marklin and Trix announced a 844 FEF, too. 2 weeks ago.
I can’t refrain to note that the Trix model it looks so identical to BLI model. It even have synchronized smoke 🤨 including the whistle. A first for Marklin/Trix.
Are this two companies cooperating in this project? The only physical difference on Both models that I noticed is the pilot design that in the BLI has a Commonwealth revolving coupler and Marklin’s coupler cover looks that has a clam shell cover.
If they do, Marklin will likely use their very reliable electronics which is 180 degrees of quite often dodging BLI. And may use Kadee #18 to accommodate NEM a coupler pockets.
BLI msp is $ 699 and Trix is $799.
FINALLY A COMPANY GOT THE PILOT WHEELS RIGHT HALLELUJAH!
This is an excellent UP FEF model, i like the 844 but i am more interested in the" 2 tone grey" paint scheme version of this locomotive model.
hi all! i couldn't believe BLI missed that LARGE toolbox atop the tender behind the containment dam,so i asked BLI about it. Matt Williamson kindly replied to say they should "probably" have added that, but it was now too late to do so! so much for James's "most accurate" tender! so for anyone buying this,a large toolbox is available from Precision Scale Co. part no.3051(or 3050,you choose),which MAY make the tender slightly more accurate. BTW, "Northern" is a TYPE not a CLASS....the class of this is FEF-3.
all the best from the UK😀
Good video James light details look great sound is awesome and the smoke is great other then that the Review is awesome great job and thanks for sharing R Guzman
Broadway does good with warranties they fixed my challenger no cost when it arrived with a couple broken peices a d a bad decoder
Man I was really hoping they'd change the sounds up a bit, oh well.
Nice fef there! 👍
Can't wait for mine!
Did you also see the novelty 844 from Marklin/Trix?
Now bli needs to release the aux tenders
🌞🚂 Shining Time Station 🚂🌞
Thank you for great review, will this rin on 18" radius? ty
Good looking engine!
HELLO JAMES ITS IS RANDY AND I LIKE U VIDEO IS COOL THANKS FRIENDS RANDY AND THE BROADWAY LIMITED FEF 844, 4-8-4 NORTHERN STEAM LOCO W/PARAGON 4! SMOKIN COOL THANKS JAMES YOUR FRIENDS RANDY
Looks great!
I so want one personally for my ultimate dream layout I will want to get 835 just because of the lore behind the layout I am wanting to eventually make
I wish my layout had a reason for larger steamers, 6 driving wheel steamers are about as realistic itd get for me
You could always buy a really nice loco that can't run on the layout and put it on a shelf for display
is there a separate controller you need to buy? Im confused what the F modes are.
Does anybody know how prototypically accurate the pre-2013 (W/ Mars Light) #844 model is? Specifically the marker lights on the tender. I currently own the Athearn version and I'm thinking about picking up one of these but I'd rather not if it's less accurate.
Any hint at a release date?
I can already tell this is going to get sold out by The time is already released
Where did you get this
Its a impressive locomotive but the nightmare of melting boilers
And also what doc thing do you use for the sound and running locos
Beautiful. Disappointed in the whistle. Not loud or throaty enough, by far. But, still a wonderful model.
I think the whistles just a place holder for the time being. I’d imagine it would be different in the release. Plus BLI locomotives usually have alternate whistles in the CVs which you can always change.
Its pretty darn loud on my production model. Sounds better than the P3 version.
I just got a text stating mine was shipped as I am watching this video. How random is that?
Broadway Limited or TRIX? Which should I pick? I am only familiar with TRIX.
10 out of 10
Hi, James, what is the weight of this one, thnx
Ah yes more trains I want but I can’t afford
I don't know if you said this but is it all pastic or diecast?
Although preordering has been made, I doubt BLI’s quality can be improved at this new one. My new ATSF 4000 was broken within one month. It first stops to chuff then even cannot move now. This is the second broken engine of 4 BLI models I bought from passed three months. Terrible quality thought!!
weird I own an ATF switcher, 3 steam engines and soon to be 4 when this one comes in and only the atsf switcher got fried by a friend
I knew they would send you one!! Thanks for the depth! That decoder has to go though!!
Yeah the whistle is 100 percent inaccurate
@@Bryce_TBS_Films I can’t decide between loksound or soundtraxx I want soundtraxx for the decoder capabilities
Or loksound for the accurate whistle
Walkway flush???? It's at a 30° angle! 🤔
My only disappointment with this model is it doesn’t have the red Mars light
New sub
What??? No Rolling Thunder? Shame, shame ;D
Looks like since MTH is gone, BLI picked up on the whistle steam effect. Pretty gimmicky and unnecessary, but pretty cool none of the less.
BLI has had the steaming whistle effect for a few years now
@@greendayfan4519 Examples?
@@officialpennsyjoe Their december 2016 release of the oil tender challengers was the first to offer it. and it was followed by the 2017 release of the big boy and all 4 of the subsequent reruns of each had the whistle steam effect
Hey, im looking for a good place to look for hon3 locomotives doses anyone know? Let me know please!
eBay will be your best bet. No one is producing a whole lot of HOn3 motive power at the moment, although freight cars can still be obtained.
@@cwhuffman01 Thanks! I will keep an eye out!
Potentially a truly great model! I do wish BLI would
produce something smaller in the future such as
a CNW 4-6-0 or a Wabash 2-6-0.
Wish I could afford it
👍
The sound isn't that special. Maybe it's the video. The whistle for example lacks. I'll get it anyway cause the model is beautiful. I have one preordered already. Could it be the video that doesn't give it justice?? I do not believe that it's because it's preproduction. In preproduction decoder and speakers ARE the final version!
I wish BLI would put a decent sound system in a locomotive for once. Paragon has always been second tier at best and the speakers are terrible. At the very least they could give us a 21 pin hookup so we could swap in a real decoder without having to redo half the wiring.
Great review as always, James. I just can't convince myself with the concept of operating steam locomotives POWERED by electric tracks.
Precision precision! 🙄
my trix 844 just arrive, and i have both..the trix modell is 10 x times better than BLI modell
Usual crap BLI sound, shame they still use this rubbish on such a nice looking model.
I’ve just been burning out the stock decoders and replacing them with aftermarket on my engines, yeah I lose smoke but I can put speakers in the engine for a stereo effect.
@@James-Railyard it is a shame they don’t offer a cheaper version of the loco without sound, which would enable you to put the saved money towards a decoder of your own choice.
@@struck2soon they used to in paragon 1 and early paragon 2 days.
Absolutely beautiful detailed engine with another worthless Broadway Limited smoke machine. It’s no wonder a lot of model railroaders don’t care for smoke. Broadway needs to take a lesson from MTH and get a better smoke system.
Could have put it on a flat surface... 😠
Sounds like absolute generic crap, that every other BLI since Paragon 2 sounds like. No fidelity, no clarity, no Guts. Just unacceptable when compared to TSU & ESU in 2021
That is the worse whistle I ever heard. Nice to see smoke coming out but the whistle sounds like a steam fart. To bad. I am a big fan of the 844.
