Spoiler : I remember when he killed that alcoholic detective. I still distinctly remember that wicked smile before he gives him the bottle. There are so many not so important story moments in the anime I remember distinctly for some reason, like the scene where the boy killed the butterfly, that scene had more impact than characters dying in so many media
It's not for everybody unfortunately. No supernatural powers, just raw suspense and good story telling. The pacing, at least in the anime, is a bit slow from my point of view, it took me quite a while to finally finish it, but it's definitely one of the greatest.
OMG! That killed me! Poor guy fights inner demons, tried cleanning for the sake of his daughter and the day he was to mert her , a Demon destroyed him inside out!!

@@BeeruzChrysler Have you ever watched an horror movie? Like, an actually good one like the OG Alien or Halloween? Or maybe Suspiria? Just go rewatch Alien. When do you think the Xenomorph is at its scariest: when it is on screen and you can see it, and the characters can defend themselves, or when it's offscreen, hinted yet hidden and never fully shown? When it's a sound in the dark, a movement in the corner of your eyes? When it's behind you and you don't know it, just to turn around as it lunges at you, killing you in an horrific way before you can react? Johan is written like a killer or monster from Horror cinema. When you see him in the flesh, you see Johane Liebert, the human, the mortel. When you hear about his actions and see the result of his actions, he is a Devil, a corrupting force of absolute Evil that can make people dance at his whims and change things as if he is 30 steps ahaed. The story teases you with answers being possible: a human or actually a Monster? The fact that people don't get it's absurd.
@@BeeruzChrysler You missed the point so wasting time is useless but i'll try. The two comparisons don't work, period. That's a sudden kinda plotpoint kinda plothoel, Johan is ESTABLISHED to be such over and over. And we also know his modus operandi, actually. He is simply crazy good at reading people and their motivations and even better at acting. That's... Really it. When he wanted to look like a random assistant, he did it. When he wanted to get a group of neonazi to believe he is the new Hitler, he did it. He can talk 5 minutes with a child and make them jump down a roof. He can destroy the life of an established surgeon simply by killing a man in front of him and making him feel guilt and regret. That's the point. We have enough to understand his methods, and our imagination feels the blanks with the scariest shit possible. And any fucking way, "trying to make an horror" with goddamn marvel superheroes shouldn't even belong to the same sentence as ACTUAL horror cinema. Not the endless deluge of trash, the actually scary or at least interesting ones. The Hills Have Eyes isn't scary because of the cannibal with a chainsaw, but because that cannibal live and acts in broad daylight. Not hidden in the night and shadow, he will just overpower and butcher you. It was legit a novel horror concept in the 70s. If you are a child and need to see stuff on screen... Well that's your bad, really. A great strength of Urasawa writing is exactly this mastery in showing JUST ENOUGH, but not more than that. When in 20th century boys there is an actual psychic, you don't suddenly turn the story into an hard magic system to explore the implication. He simply uses it to imply to the reader that Friend being ACTUALLY supernatural is a possibility.
He’s a great protagonist in the sense that he always does what you want him to do. I never feel frustrated with any of his actions and all of his struggles are very understandable. He’s written very well.
The most powerful ability in anime isn't the Death Note, or Ultra Instinct, or Saitama's punches. The most powerful ability in anime is Johan Liebert's vocal chords.
Johan truly scares me. He scares me because of the fact that he can exist. Monster is very much grounded in realism. Redefine the meaning of a Monster in your mind. The philosophy of the show. The psychology of characters. The characterization of the entire show is amazing. The pacing of the anime is slow at start, and the animation is pretty decent. But it was made in 2004. Also, the anime redeems itself in the end. This is why Johan is my favorite anime character and Monster is one of my favorite anime series and manga.

@@madhukarjonathanminj2772 The point was that the 2nd monster learned to be happy with who they were, even without a name. Without an identity. Despite all that happens to Nina being the one who suffered all that happened, she holds onto her humanity, comes out of it a stronger, compassion woman. Whereas Johan who experienced none of it, latched onto the story, and in the pursuit of something, became nothing.
Why does no one talk about Urusawa's artwork his artwork isn't as amazing as something like Berserk or Vagabond but I feel like his artwork fits his stories so well really bringing out the tone of his mangas.
🔥🔥“The Nameless Monster” story Can explain the Author’s logic; like a Sharingan Artists have the ability to use many styles at anytime. However Johan’s character in Monster’s plot does not require any “World Building” his philosophy is that no matter how grand a structure is: it can come apart from the inside. His character serves to deconstruct the world around him. So if anything if time went on the world around Johan would have been empty’ just like at the end of “The Nameless Monster” tale’. the Masked Man has done an excellent job of explaining the 2 perspectives with 1 story.🔥🔥🔥
I love his art! It’s beautiful. Especially here at 10:50, I find that middle panel with the Lieberts absolutely haunting and very artistic. Whilst watching this video, I couldn’t help but analyse this panel the most. It drew me in somehow.
Well it was his most troubled phase in life, evil kids are often used in many horror settings the reason is simple, they represent two opposite forces colliding in one being, kids supposedly known for their innocence and purity used as a catalyst to represent evil. What Johan went trough was a phase of confusion that started with never getting a name, losing or better yet never acquiring an identity, robbed of that he’s an empty shell wich only purpose is bringing upon destruction and end existence. But if he has a common emotion to us I think it’s the pain and trauma deriving from the experiments he went trough
Nice one But actually nietzsche's philosophy is opposed to johan's one For Nietzsche u have to find the will to live in the little pleasures of life and in the beauty of ur life At least that's what i understood Whereas johan doesn't have any will to live and doesn't try to find it in those things

Wolfgang Grimmer's death ripped my heart out no lie. Sure, Johan was supposed to embody pure evil while Dr Tennant embodied pure good but for me, Grimmer's monologue about why it's horrid to destroy people's sense of good and evil answered the nihilistic problem Johan posed. The drive to find meaning in life is our greatest burden turned gift, and to an extent, a need.
I really like grimmer because even though he is stripped of all of his emotions, he still strive to be a good person unlike say, roberto, who underwent the same thing.
In the manga (or at least the french translation), I clearly remember one thing a few characters said to describe Johan's way of thinking about humanity : "Do you remember that feeling you had as a kid, when you disturbed an ant colony for the sake of it?"

I have always seen monster as (one of the) best manga to delve into the topic of good vs evil, and nature vs nuture. Johan is the evil that harmed a lot of people, but many of those died because inside them reside evil too. and also the best twist ever, for the whole manga the author convinced us that johan is the prime example of ‘born evil’, and that despite not being the person seeing a bunch of people dropping dead before him, he’s still somehow turned mass killer. Yet in the very final chapter, the detail of their mother giving up on one of the child is revealed, and we cant help but think, maybe it’s not nature after all, but nuture at the most subtle of work. Maybe, just maybe, had the mother fought just a little harder for them both, the nameless monster wouldnt have been born …

Ehhh Johan never ever felt human to me. I don’t think he was written as a person. He’s not layered, with a multifaceted personality with different traits the way humans are. He represents ideals, not traits, if that makes any sense. Force of nature villain.
@@aureliaavalon it’s more my own personal taste. Johan and Tenma aren’t really people so much as they are stand ins for vastly differing philosophies. While that can be thought provoking, I prefer more personal nuanced characters. Like Heath Ledgers joker isn’t a character, he’s chaos in human form vs Joaquin Phoenix’s very human joker
Yes I noticed this while reading too. What I got from it was that he represented the Monster that can be brought forth simply through words and storytelling.
I disagree while yes, at the beginning of the show he definitely felt more like an enigma than a person but the more we got to find out about his past the more I started to understand him. While yes both him and Tenma represent two extremes and definetly are meant to transport certain ideals and themes, they both still feel human to me. Johann ultimately wanted someone to proof him wrong in his beliefs and ideals. He was secretly waiting for someone to debunk his idea of Nihilism and show him a way out of that isolation. Nina also understood at The end that the only way to save her brother was to forgive him that would mean he could still be loved despite of all the terrible things he has done. He tried to erase himself from this world, kill everyone who knew about his existence and detach himself from life in general. Tenma and Nina were able to form a connection with him despite all of that which proofed to him that life is not meaningless because of those connections that were made with him. Human psychological experiments, the betrayal of his mother and his gamble with fate all played a role in shaping his character.
One of my favorite aspects of Johan is how in the first part of Monster, he almost only exists in stories and legends. Every character Tenma meets has been affected by Johan in some way and so Johan feels like he is a boogie man, a story made to scare children. It is through these other people that we see Johan's true power and how terrifying he is. The mere mention of his name leads people to kills others and themselves under his name.

Yeah, like what the hell was up with him. It's almost like the only emotion he felt was bitterness

Mr. Grimmer was one of the greatest side characters in Monster
The Magnificent Steiner strikes again
All of the side characters were pretty great in my opinion. The way Urasawa weaved all of their stories into Monster is one of its best attributes.
Yes loved him
I really didn’t like him at first, but after a few episodes i started loving his character, and now he is one of my favorite characters in the show.

One thing fascinates me the most about Johan is he reminds of Tom Riddle(Aka Voldemort) from Harry Potter without the magical power. He too had such manipulative and Persuasive power and he too hated the mankind. The only difference is Voldemort wanted to rule the world while Johan just wants to watch the whole world burn. That itself makes Johan a pretty scary and possibly one of the best villain ever written.
Johan's most powerful weapon is his words, they are able to seep.into your psyche and lead you down a dark path.
He is a master manipulator!
The last scene, the flashback was so good. Gave me chills.
I think I saw u defend monster from some shounen fanboys in a nux vedio
Already knew it was Johann before even clicking on this video. Monster is such an underrated anime and it saddens me that not many people know of it
When Tenma saved him from for the first time, he saved his *life*
The second time, he saved his *soul*
Johan is my all time favorite villains and I’m grateful for the fact that Urasawa made such an intriguing character!
I just finished watching this show........ I'm lost for words
When i see ur name it reminds me Eren lol
I feel like the reason why Johan works so well is because he is just a man. We as humans naturally fear the evils and darkness of mankind so Johan a man who is basically the evils of man in character can only be a good character and urasawas masterful writing of him makes him even better
Johan is the only character in a manga/anime who really scares me. Not some kind of demon. Just a human. I remember watching in shock the drawing of his face the first time Johan is revealed. I was young and I was scared to turn the page because I was imagining an awful creature and then, there is this beautiful man... I couldn't believe this was the Monster of this story and even if I was young, I felt in his smile how he was dangerous.
dude.... my name is johan and i believe that it really is a wonderful name and it feels weird hearing my own name on a random video i dont know what to feel-

I will

Yes, especially i totally forgot the story again
20 episodes in. I am incredibly thankful for this video. Such a masterpiece.
Finished watching 7 times. This is a once in the lifetime of a show to experience but you can double it.
It's funny how the drunk father saw all his heads... How much hate Mom bear the twins.. The sandbox, bon bon candies, obluda, the frogs, Magnificent steiner, tadaima-okaeri, the coffee without sugar, the gun he points unto his forehead, the provoke where you can never pull the trigger... Naoki Urasawa potrayed this perfectly. Grain by Kuniaki still up to this day gave me goosebumps 😔
Normally I laugh at exaggerated titles like this, but when it comes to Johan, this title is more than well deserved.
This has to be because of that Monster take on twitter
Whats Twitter saying?
@@JoseRufus just from the last video there was a guy shit talking monster
@@themrxavi6280 I think I remember seeing something about Johan being nothing special
@@JoseRufus No, he said that Johans character and the mystery about him and his interaction with the other main character (forgot his name, haven't read monster yet) were the only things holding monster up. And masked got kinda pissed about that, because these points are ( in his opinion, again I haven't read monster so I don't know if thats correct) are the literal driving force and main factor of the manga. The Twitter take basically said that the show/ manga was only good, because of the exact things that make it great.
I thought this video was in the making already
Absolutely loved this intro and that story in Monster how it connects to Johan and everything throughout comes back to him and absolutely love the dynamic between him and tenma
Johann Liebert is how you build a char with max charisma. He killed a guy just by talking...

@Bean Bowl ah, namikawa daisuke then. yeah, he does have good voicr
@@extremepillows nah nah he's talking about hisokas English Voice actor not the Japanese one
i definitely disagree. the sub voice is so much more fitting. it’s makes johan a much more scary character because of his childlike voice and innocence makes his murders and outlook on life. johans dub is very generic
@@seth3441 agreed
Johan is, without a doubt, an almost perfect antagonist. I just wished we saw a little bit of his thinking/planning process of how he pulled everything off. Anw, still one of the best indeed
Agreed. His presence throughout the story was immense even when he wasn’t in a lot of the episodes, but I wish we could’ve went a little deeper into his psyche. Just finished watching it subbed and it’s now one my fav anime ever.
Just finished monster manga now. Top 5 for sure.

@@goodiesfeats2252 you missed the joke
Ehhh Johan never ever felt human to me. I don’t think he was written as a person. He’s not layered, with a multifaceted personality with different traits the way humans are. He represents ideals, not traits, if that makes any sense. Force of nature villain.
Ah, i get what you meant. it's like he represents a philosophy. And with how atmospheric the manga seems to be, i'm not surprised you think that way.
@@pillmatik4239 U didn't understood his character well then
I m not in the mood to make several paras to explain you either
I never see anyone talking about Monster so it's so awesome to see such a video be posted. Really in-depth. I loved that part at the start too!
