20/20 Fidel Castro interview - Barbara Walters [2of6]

  • US Cuba Relations
Barbara Walters interviews Fidel Castro from Havana, Cuba -- 25 years after her first interview with the Cuban leader. Her original interview made a little history because people got their first real look at the man. Although Castro is known for very long speeches, he rarely does interviews.
Fidel Castro, 76 at the time of this interview, has outlasted nine US presidents. He's on his tenth. His rule continues to inspire both fear and devotion. He tells Barbara Walters that Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev lied to both President John F. Kennedy and Cuba, heightening the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Anchor: Barbara Walters and John Miller Airdate: October 11, 2002

It's amazing how we in America want every country in the world to live like we do, as if other people in other countries don't have ideas or for that matter intelligence.

If Cuba was an intelligent country, then why don't they have freedom of expression, wouldn't that be the intelligent thing to do?

tali Guevara America doesn't have freedom of speech either. Police use tear gas on anti-racist protesters and protect Nazis.

+Montpelier Montgomery "Things our way." Do you mean the way of supporting a middle eastern country responsible for the genocide of an entire population? Do you mean the way of suspecting another middle eastern country having WMDs which turned out to be false, yet attack it anyways? Lolol. America was great before all these neocons and warmongers penetrated the U.S. congress and start it using this country in their favor.

it just dawned on me why American Media paints Fidel Castro as some kind of boogie man - he kicked corporations out of Cuba (and remember in America ...corporations are people...like it says "We the Corporations" on the Constitution)

His voice is nice, Is it wrong for me to think ,that he and Barbara Walters should of had an affair with each other ,right there when they were young ? I see chemistry

Well since Castro believes that Americans are being misinformed about Cuba, this interview could only do him good to speak his mind and appear as someone at least somewhat prudent and sane.
Besides, professional journalism at the level of Barbara Walters is very just. Castro knows that although she asks tough questions, she's always fair and has good reasons for asking them.

......a mere piece of paper on a map instead of an actual continent with people living there minding their business with different cultures, backgrounds, etc. For the sake of making money and using the people or killing them if they were in the way of them making money.) Fidel Castro actually sent 36,000 troops over to Angola to help the "AFRICAN" leader there fight against colonialism and they won. He has always helped in such respects. I will forever love Fidel,

I don't get why people hate him. They don't like the way he runs things obviously but I guarantee there would be a group of people with an issue if they were in charge.
Diplomacy is of most importance between Countries. Each Country ought to respect other Countries.
There ought to be repercussions for those who enter other Countries by force. And also for those who have bad intentions while visiting other Countries.
Each Country ought to recognize that it must work together with others and we ought to discourage violence.
I would establish higher punishments/disciplines for those fabricating false fronts. Like commiting acts to stage a lie to implicate others.

@egogo816 I would say just that for what I know, Fidel Castro lead the revolution, not to gain power for himself, but to free his country from what he believed were an opressive state and foreign influences and make a better way of life for his people. I mean, I don´t think he used empty rethoric, he really wanted the best for his country. You can´t say that for sure of almost no other leader or president in these times.

When you are a person who really cares about others, you can see the difference between a man who believes in what he says and someone who just speaks sh*t to pursue his own advantage. Just the careless and selfish polititians and the people they convince think they can say whatever they want, and nobody will notice. The rest of us know better.

    • ...Thats is one of the goals of socialism. To take the value created by industries in any given nation and put to collective use for all in said same nation such as food rationing, free medical care, and free schools (at all levels). For if a person is homeless, hungry, injured, contracted pnuemonia, and is uneducated then what good is the freedom "to"? This is exactly what Cuba is trying to achieve. The problem is the embargo. It's putting the building of socialism through a hindered pace.

I do not like any dictators in any form and support the ousted left wing elected president of Honduras right to return.
