In the mid-to-late 1990s Wayne Fyvie was one of the powerhouse loose forwards in South African rugby. He finally got his chance to represent the Springboks, off the bench, against the All Blacks at Loftus in 1996. Unfortunately it ended in defeat rendering that Bok group the first to lose a series to New Zealand on home soil.
Wayne played again the following week as South Africa defeated the kiwis to salvage some pride in the final Test before setting off for Argentina, where he would get one more opportunity, again as a replacement. In a country blessed with world class loose forwards who seemingly appear as if coming off a conveyor belt, Fyvie was up against the likes of Ruben Kruger, Andre Venter, Rassie Erasmus and Corne Krige for a Springbok place, among others.
Nevertheless his supporters will fondly recall the impact he made and in this candid conversation he shares his experiences from those days. The high, the lows and lighter moments are all here in this must-watch Front Row Rugby episode!

Peter says: I love the Springboks and rugby is one of my favourite sports. Although as a sports journalist I am supposed to remain neutral, I always like to point out that before I became a professional, I was just a big fan! I hold a Masters Degree in International Journalism so at least you know I should be able to ask a good question or two! My dream is to do this TH-cam Channel permanently.

Wayne was an absolute menace and reckless regarding his own safety. Before the law change that stopped the early break of flankers, flyhalves used to absolutely crap themselves with Wayne around.
Great interview - great guy.
Thanks a lot. He was a superb player and very unlucky not to have had more opportunities for the Springboks. Glad you enjoyed the interview.
Wayne was q great player who would have walked into any other international team at the time which just goes to show how blessed SA was and still is in the loose forward department. He was a Sharks stalwart and servant of rugby!
Spot on, Gareth. With so many outstanding players in each position it does take something of a miracle to make the Springbok squad. Happy for Wayne that he could achieve that feat and as you say, he remains a legend at the Sharks.
White River boy. Always payed hard. True ambassador. Well done Wayne.
Glad you enjoyed it!!
I enjoyed this one, Peter. He was a tough player and massive in that Natal side. To become a Springbok as a loose forward is a tough ask for anyone, but he did it!
Thanks Willie. Yes, Wayne was a great player but with so many wonderful loosies around it was incredibly difficult to make the Boks side. Happy for him that he was able to do it.
Great interview Peter...thank you...Argentina is definitely on my bucket list😂....
Thanks Sakabula! I would also love to one day visit Argentina!
Argentina
Another correct answer in the bag, Sean!
Good interview Peter! To be honest with you I forgot about Wayne Fyvie! He only played in 1996 & not again. He & Robbie Brink were 2 Bok flanks who only played one season of international rugby & never heard of again!
Thanks Sean. Yes, there are many Boks who only played a very short career. I've actually gathered a lot of them up in a play list here - Guys who played 10 Tests or fewer. Not always remembered as well as the other but they also have great stories to share and often they have the best insights and advice.
Only 3 test matches BUT 3 more than most of us. Really love the humble fella he is !!
Three more than most of us indeed! Superb player back in the day.
As a sharks supporter, I always felt Wayne was unfairly overlooked. Great player but didnt fit the springbok flank image of that time as he was smaller than other players in the same position.
Great interview btw
He was a great player. Unlucky because there were so many wonderful players around at the time but he could easily have played more Tests for the Boks.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you.
