Prepare yourself for a fun journey back to the mid-90s when Justin Swart appeared to have the rugby world at his feet. An explosive wing, he made his Springbok debut in 1996 and performed admirably.
However he soon found himself out of the picture but after switching to fullback he set the domestic rugby scene alight with some superb performances. Swart was duly rewarded with the Number 15 jersey in Nick Mallett’s first Test in charge.
Unfortunately Just suffered a hamstring injury soon thereafter and lost his place to Percy Montgomery - a man who would go on to become one of the all-time greatest Springboks.
Justin Swart’s Springbok career is one of excitement but mostly bad luck. In this candid conversation he takes us back to that era and in his own words discusses what really happened. You’re not going to want to miss this one!

Peter says: I love the Springboks and rugby is one of my favourite sports. Although as a sports journalist I am supposed to remain neutral, I always like to point out that before I became a professional, I was just a big fan! I hold a Masters Degree in International Journalism so at least you know I should be able to ask a good question or two! My dream is to do this TH-cam Channel permanently. Peter you should ask for a little life intro ….. where were you born, what school did you got to … was your school team good, what did you do in your free time … surfing? Working the farm? Etc for some of these players the interview tells me the part about them that I know. But please I am not unhappy with the interviews, they have all been interesting and their insights into coaches and fellow players has been amazing. Thanks.
Thanks for the suggestion, Wolf. Glad you enjoy the videos. One of the reasons I don't really ask those kind of questions is because the interviews are specifically about their Springbok careers. That's why we never talk about the provincial stuff. I did try a little experiment last year and did a few videos just about the Currie Cup/Super 12 but they didn't do very well so I ditched that idea.
But I think I might be able to throw in a question about what they do in their free time/hobbies ... that's a really nice one!
Good interview Peter- Justin was a great player & it's a pity he had too many injuries!Should've played plenty more test's.
Thanks, Sean! Yes, he was incredible in 1997 for Province especially. Real shame about the injuries. Glad I could get him on the show.
I was at Paul Roos with Justin. Great guy and bloody good player!🏆
Very cool. I bet you could tell in those days already there was something special about him.
Would've loved to hear how he ended up playing at Otago
Hi Jonathan. Thanks for the comment. The reason we didn't discuss that is because these interviews only deal with the guys' Springbok careers.
I actually tried experimenting with a few Currie Cup/Super Rugby interviews and unfortunately they didn't do very well so after that I decided to just stick to the Bok formula.
I remember this guy. He was such an awesome player for WP...
He was wonderful!
Francois Pienaar is underestimated as a player
And an excellent leader!
