Thank you for having posted this video. Even though I don't have the same model of exhaust fan I was able to follow along. By going step by step with the cleaning it saved us nearly $80.00 on a new fan motor assembly. Our fan is now back to its normal operation. Thanks again.

Great video, helped me get the unit apart. My blower wheel was really dirty. I tried to clean it with compressed air, steamer, toothbrush, and vac with no good results. I ended up removing the blower wheel from the motor shaft. Just use a screwdriver to pop the metal clamp off the wheel and push wheel from the inside pressing close to the shaft. You don't need to remove motor from housing. Soaked blower wheel with a solution of simple green and the gunk came off easily with hose spray and fingernail brush.

At your electrical panel shut off the circuit breaker to the bathroom before working on the fan. Also once of of the fan and outside you can clean the exterior grill using a spritzer bottle with a equal mix of white vinegar and water. Leave on for several minutes then brush with toothbrush and rinse with just water. The vinegar kills mold.
Excellent thank you. I could never figure out how to take out the motor. Really wish these companies would make a Pre filter. That’s easy to pop out and clean. That dust goes through pipe and then vent. Tough to clean.

I really liked this video. I watched for how to remove the vent. I removed the vent to find it was attached by little wires. Could you please elaborate on how to unplug it? You mention later only that it's tricky. Do you just pull or do you have to pinch together? I recommend shutting off the breaker to the bathroom (not just the light or fan switch). My fan seems to have a humidity sensor built in. Even with the switch off, the fan will continue to run if it's humid in the room, which means there's still power running to the fan! Yikes! Great video!

Hi Michael, I'm contemplating to replace it with a fan-heather-light unit (Bay Area weather it's getting too cold). Can you recommend one that would fit the existing hole without cut outs?

Using an air compressor to blow out the dust and grime on the removed unit will also work. It has enough pressure to blow out the very small crevices that the vacuum can't get to.

Good video. Learn how to take out my motor. However, I do got one question. My fan comes on but it seems like there is not a lot of sanction. Besides cleaning all the dust, is there anything else I need to d for it to have a stronger sanction or do you think I have to replace it? Please advise thanks aged

The screw was easy but you filled in the blanks by showing me how to remove it with the screwdriver......I was stuck on how to remove the unit until then.....thanks so much.......made my life a lot easier with that little tip:)

Tom n h man, i was with u thru the whole vid til u removed the fan/motor part & said use the tooth brush or whatever to clean it which happens to be the while reason i started wetting ur vid & u skipped that whole step showing how exactly you cleaned it. I really needed to know that part. Oh well nevermind
My fan is a Nutone, mine has a light lens in the middle with the border on all 4 sides being the exhaust that needs cleaning. Is there a light bulb in there or is it just a cosmetic thing as if so does it come down the same way?
Robert Lofrano Thanks for checking out the video Robert. Great question! Most Nutone light/fan combinations are very convenient when it comes to removing, cleaning, and reinstalling. In the event that you just need to replace your light bulb,💡 you will not be required to remove your entire fan Casing...just the clear lens. You will then have access to your light bulb. You will want to use caution as you remove the bulb and then reinstall the new bulb because you are working near an electrical connection point. Then reinstall the clear lens. In the event that you are replacing or removing the entire fan, most designs allow you to remove the fan with the Bulb still screwed into the fan. You will then disconnect the wiring from the fan that goes up into the ceiling. I hope this helps. Actually, there is a retaining collar around the shaft of the squirrel cage fins. That should be loosened up with a long allen wrench slotted between the fins to reach it. Makes the cage come off a lot easier without the risk of damage. For mine, I had to do this as the dust was caked on so badly it was not moving with either vacuum or blowing. I suspect that a mixture of moisture, hair spray and dust over time allowed it to build up. Once removed, it cleaned up easily with warm soapy water and a small scrub brush.
I have the same electrical plug and I can't figure out how to remove it, I tried pulling on it and it's not working so I'm not sure if I have to take a flat head screwdriver and press something too

would have been helpful to explain what you did to make it loose.... after 2 hours I eventually took a screwdriver to hold one part while pulling on the other. It dislodged. @@DIYwithMichaelBorders

Thank you for posting this video was a great big help one thing I learned when I got down to the fan blades there's a screw in between the motor and blade casing if you loosen that you can get all the plastic blades off and wash them in the sink and let it dry real good and reattach everything to the motor other than that excellent video

Save yourself a lot of scrubbing and just soak the vent cover in warm water and ammonia. A cup of ammonia per gallon of water should do it. Then just rinse and dry and you're done. This will also work miracles for cleaning dirty combs and brushes. (But don't use ammonia on natural bristles or wood.) I'm sure it would work on the fan blades, but it might also take off the paint or damage any aluminum, so proceed with caution.

Has anyone ever tried cleaning an electric motor with butane? I figure it would cut through all the dirt, and then just give it time to evaporate and you're good to go

Tom n h man, i was with u thru the whole vid til u removed the fan/motor part & said use the tooth brush or whatever to clean it which happens to be the while reason i started wetting ur vid & u skipped that whole step showing how exactly you cleaned it. I really needed to know that part. Oh well nevermind
My fan is a Nutone, mine has a light lens in the middle with the border on all 4 sides being the exhaust that needs cleaning. Is there a light bulb in there or is it just a cosmetic thing as if so does it come down the same way?

Robert Lofrano Thanks for checking out the video Robert. Great question! Most Nutone light/fan combinations are very convenient when it comes to removing, cleaning, and reinstalling. In the event that you just need to replace your light bulb,💡 you will not be required to remove your entire fan Casing...just the clear lens. You will then have access to your light bulb. You will want to use caution as you remove the bulb and then reinstall the new bulb because you are working near an electrical connection point. Then reinstall the clear lens.
In the event that you are replacing or removing the entire fan, most designs allow you to remove the fan with the Bulb still screwed into the fan. You will then disconnect the wiring from the fan that goes up into the ceiling.

Thanks for answering I cleaned it it was working ok it was making a little noise now has stopped except for a humming sound not sure what happened
Robert Lofrano Thanks for the update, in most cases, humming noises begin when the actual electric motor is beginning to wear out. Not sure how old your fan motor is.

Actually, there is a retaining collar around the shaft of the squirrel cage fins. That should be loosened up with a long allen wrench slotted between the fins to reach it. Makes the cage come off a lot easier without the risk of damage. For mine, I had to do this as the dust was caked on so badly it was not moving with either vacuum or blowing. I suspect that a mixture of moisture, hair spray and dust over time allowed it to build up. Once removed, it cleaned up easily with warm soapy water and a small scrub brush.

I have the same electrical plug and I can't figure out how to remove it, I tried pulling on it and it's not working so I'm not sure if I have to take a flat head screwdriver and press something too

would have been helpful to explain what you did to make it loose.... after 2 hours I eventually took a screwdriver to hold one part while pulling on the other. It dislodged. @@DIYwithMichaelBorders

Thank you for posting this video was a great big help one thing I learned when I got down to the fan blades there's a screw in between the motor and blade casing if you loosen that you can get all the plastic blades off and wash them in the sink and let it dry real good and reattach everything to the motor other than that excellent video

Save yourself a lot of scrubbing and just soak the vent cover in warm water and ammonia. A cup of ammonia per gallon of water should do it. Then just rinse and dry and you're done. This will also work miracles for cleaning dirty combs and brushes. (But don't use ammonia on natural bristles or wood.) I'm sure it would work on the fan blades, but it might also take off the paint or damage any aluminum, so proceed with caution.
