      make sure your fan is sucking up humidity. A tip I read says to hold up a couple pieces of toilet paper to it when it is running, (with the cover on) and if it does not hold the toilet paper against it when you let go, it's not working even though you hear the sound of it

    Amazing how the newer " modern " Bath fans have gone from needing to removing 2 easily removed screws to do this maintenance, To now needing to remove multiple hard to reach ones. Then disassembling a housing, to detach the blower cage/ fan blades. Progress. oh my!

    I clean my fan once a year when checking the fire alarm batteries in the fall. I take my fan out of the ceiling like your video but also take the plastic housing off with four screws and remove the centre bolt to the squirrel cage fan blades. Then I can just wash the blades with a scrub brush in the kitchen sink and the inside of the housing, Dry it and put it back together. Looks like new and good to go for another year in about 40 minutes start to finish.

    If you want to take it one step further, take the rotating part off. It's typically held in place just by the center nut. Then you can soak the hole thing in lukewarm water with soap and gently scrub away.
    And also, I would strongly recommend taking some HVAC-grade aluminum tape and tape the edges of the metal housing over the drywall to seal off that gigantic gap. You'd be surprised how much warm air escapes through such openings into the attic in the winter. Or you'll get a lot of mucky air and critters from the attic into your house. While you're at it, do seal all these gaps around each and every vent you have in your house. Some time and little money well spent!

    • @ThatFixItGuy
      @ThatFixItGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you so much for tips. The next time I clean I will take the rotating part off and clean. I have some of HVAC tape and will get on this as well. Thank you. I will shoot a video at some point about wasted heat and ac! Fill those gaps!

    • @janie31281
      @janie31281 ปีที่แล้ว

      What a good suggestion! Is it possible to take out just the rotating part without the squirrel cage itself? My bathroom vent isn't sucking anything up, but I don't wanna mess with taking out the cage because I'm renting and the hardware may be old. I want to clean as much as I can, but avoid even accidental damage.

  • @necrojoe

    It's less about how often, and more about as-needed. My home is pretty dusty, so I can tell that the fan is slightly noisier, and there's slightly more fog on the bathroom mirror after a shower. That's my cue. It's about once every maybe 2 years.

    I have an always on bathroom fan that is integral to the home's ventilation system. I clean it about every six months. The thing is I don't need a calendar reminder as I can hear when it needs cleaning. After a cleaning I can barely hear it running. It gets progressively louder as it gets dirty. When I can hear it from fifteen feet, it's time.

      You might want to rethink that, since dust on the motor can cause a house fire by the dust sparking, or the motor overheating from too much dust.
      From the article text I posted above/in this thread: "In Mesa alone, Smith says there have been 22 confirmed fires linked to bathroom exhaust fans in the past 30 months"

    I feel like our fan just dumps dust in our bathroom because it's vented to the outside. Wondering if you know if we can put a filter in these to keep them from dropping particles in the bathroom. Or does that cause the engine to have to work too hard? I clean it regularly but this happens every week. I'm so tired of having to dust the bathroom so dang often. It doesn't happen anywhere else in the house. Thank you so much!

    • @ThatFixItGuy

      You could stick some filter material up in there I bet. That is so weird that is happening to you. A filter will slow down the air flowna little, but i bet it will help. Just make sure it can't suck up into the fan. Let me know how this works out for you. I'm interested to see if your isse stops. Good luck

      The bathroom filter is really to remove moisture and smell out of the bathroom. If you add a filter is could slow down air flow faster. You will want to change or clean that filter pretty often to keep that flowing good.
      If you are getting dust coming into your house front when vent you will want to look at how the vent is ran out the house.

    You missed the most important part. You told people how to clean it, but you never told people WHERE the dirt is coming from in the first place!
