Amazing video, gave me the courage to do this, long overdue, there was a whole ecosystem living inside that box, the dust was literally fossilized and now it's clean like a brand new installation. Thanks for explaining and showing all the steps, it made the process attainable, it was tremendously useful !!!
Thanks for the guidance! I performed the deep clean and removed many many years of dust buildup within the unit, but now the fan seems to be less effective at removing the moisture in the bathroom during a shower. I even have water droplets dripping down from the fan which didn't happen before. The motor, fan and light all seem to be working well with no issue. Is there a reason a deep cleaning would cause the fan to be less effective than before?
There is also a flap at the start of the exhaust port that keeps outside air from coming on when the fan is not running that can get stuck closed sometimes after cleaning if the gunk gets into the hinges of it.
Good direction demo! But-what about the duct it’s connected to?? How to clean that? In our humid climate, + humidity from shower + unholy levels of dust here, I’m pretty sure the long vent tube is likely clogged with moisture-plastered-on dust, same as the fan… How to clean that? It was hard to get the plastered-on dust off the fan-the stuff in the duct is probly as bad.
I just cleaned my dryer exhaust line by using a long handled brush and a shop vacuum. That would probably work for a bathroom fan exhaust as well. Be careful not to damage the exhaust - some are steel, but most are made of flexible tubing with thin walls and a wire for structure.
@@paperaxes4192 Exhaust fans are most commonly are designed to make it impossible to check or clean the exhaust piping from inside the room, because the fan mechanism itself blocks that.
@familyhandyman - this cover is located in the water closet of the MBA. It isn’t covered in dust; it’s covered in a yellow substance. This after a few days, black spots appear on the south part of the ceiling. This is the second time it has occurred. The last time I had a roofer, plumber, and HVAC person here to take a look. They confirmed that there was no problem in their area. I use febreze air freshener. I also turning on the bathroom vent outside of the water closet when I shower. Am I doing something wrong? Or not doing something that I should? Let me know if you have questions. Thank you!
I'm not a repairperson or a handyman, but it sounds like this building has a mold problem. I'd either try a different HVAC person or I'd look into a mold remediation team. Especially if this is a public building or a business, you may have toxic mold that can make people sick, and you'd have liability for not maintaining a safe structure.
For squirrel type fan blade, my main bath fan is full of dust that’s been caked on with shower humidity and other airborne chemicals like hair and deodorant sprays. The stuff does not come off even after soaking for days. The best method I’ve found is to use a power washer, on removed fan blades only, to physically remove chemical/water adhered dust. Does anyone have a solution that works to loosen up this material on plastic fan? Maybe I need acetone or some other solvent, I know denatured alcohol doesn’t touch it.
Ceramic (clay) hobbies supply tools. One of the tools is a small, double ended, tapered brush with stout bristles. Fits and gently cuts through that plastered dust that is caked on the blower wheel blades.
My apartment has painted over the cover so i can't even remove it to clean it :/ my bathroom is getting really dusty bc i can't clean the fan properly. Great job, landlords 👏
this was my thought exactly. They're just going to do the landlord special again for the next tenant so just slice the seam with an x-acto or small box cutter.@@jadetries
I don't know how anyone is able to put it back up so easily, those prongs are crazy hard to get back in place. My hand doesn't fit so I can get them in the right position. ugh!
Might want to make a correction . . . too much lint build-up in a DRYER EXHAUST vent can possibly cause a fire . . . NEVER in a bathroom exhaust fan vent.

Wow so straight to the point I love this and appreciate no big long story to tell. , wish more people would do that
Thank you so much! Your video helped walk me through this today! I didn't have to bug my husband once 💪🏼
Well I can be ur husband a husband who don’t listen to they wife ain’t a husband that’s a douchband
20/10, was instrumental in helping me fix a fan!
I never thought about cleaning the fan!
This was a great video. Exactly what I needed, thanks! 👍
What a good way to start off the new year! Ty😇
Very helpful and precise in how to do this. Many Thanks!!
Thank you so much for this!!👏🏾👌👊👍 I followed the steps and was able to clean our bathroom vent with light!
I'm in love! You are awesome. Thank you -
WOW great in-depth explanation and walk through - Thanks!

It's possible you caused the duct to come loose from the exhaust port. Turn on the bath fan and check the airflow at the exterior cover.
There is also a flap at the start of the exhaust port that keeps outside air from coming on when the fan is not running that can get stuck closed sometimes after cleaning if the gunk gets into the hinges of it.
Excellent explanations and demo! Thank you!
Hi, appreciate the video. What model of hand vacuum are you using with brush accessory?
It looks like a Dison - cordless
Thank you so much you helped me clean mine out and I found a dead mouse in it . What vacuum cleaner did you use?
Looks like he used a dyson.
The fan and motor inside is sideways instead of facing down. Could this lead to an issue with air intake?
Would anyone know if there is to buy a replacement for this ??? Like a complete replacement on the spinning piece?
TY 🎉
Awesome job! Appreciate your work. Commenting all this for the algorithm, to help ya out.
thank you!
What kind of vacuum are you using in this video?
The toothbrush is a good idea
I did all the other steps before watching didn’t think of the toothbrush thanks sir
Thank you my maintenance mans been suppose to do this for a week now
How to you clean the pipe that goes to the outside? I think i have birds in it.

I could get one side down. The clips wouldn’t move. Eventually got it lol. Thank you.
How to remove the logt to get to fan 2:47
My apartment has painted over the cover so i can't even remove it to clean it :/ my bathroom is getting really dusty bc i can't clean the fan properly. Great job, landlords 👏
Use a craft blade to split the paint at the seam?
If u rent.. have maintenance take care of all your needs. It's actually cheaper for your landlord than trusting someone not knowing what their doing.
this was my thought exactly. They're just going to do the landlord special again for the next tenant so just slice the seam with an x-acto or small box cutter.@@jadetries
My fan cover does not have spring clips! 😔
Thank You!
Thank you, my rental seems to have never had this done. Absolutely disgusting.
I'd recommend always switching off power at the circuit breaker rather than trusting the on/off switch
I don't know how anyone is able to put it back up so easily, those prongs are crazy hard to get back in place. My hand doesn't fit so I can get them in the right position. ugh!
Your video is very short but long doesn't really take?

I still wouldn't trust it, lol. Electricity and dust are not a very good combo 😂
Thanks 👍
Glad you caught that lol no chance a fires starting in a bath fan from dust 😂
Oh yes they can. I’ve seen it a number of times. The really scary part is you won’t know until the flames have spread in the ceiling.
I like to buy a new house.
fuckin thank you !
Another dude that won't take out 4-5 screws and cleaning inside the motor. Gets cleaner.
Thank you! This was very helpful!
