An IGNITION KEY in a Race Car???...."Been a while since I've seen that!!!! Seriously, I miss the days when NASCAR and Trans/Am cars were built on FACTORY chassis...
I believe the original owner of this car was Hershell McGriff and he ran in NASCAR west coast in the early seventies. This car is over 40 years old and in previous videos like Le Mans classic it was passing cars much newer and made specifically for road racing, not bad.
@@mellilore It'd be easy to pick the Porsche Carrera GT, McLaren F1, or Ferrari F40 as the peak analog car. I love those cars too. In favor of the 3rd gen Charger, it was one of the best NASCAR racers, was a successful drag racer, was affordable and reliable, and could haul a family of six around.
OMG!! That awesome engine sound is still alive my eardrums are the only organ in my body that doesn't like this noise well, with protection they do of course😛
This car along with the number 90 Truxmore Torino were raced at LeMans in 1976, in a class called Nascar Grand International. This car was driven by Hershel McGriff, a West Coast USA Nascar driver. The number and sponsor were same as his US cars. He had won the Mexican Road Race in the fifties and was still racing around 2005. Dick Hutcherson, one of the drivers of the 3rd place Ford GT40 MkII in 1966 was a driver in the Truxmore car in 1976. The cars did not do well, as I recall. The engines were built for 135 octane race fuel, they did not know that lower octane was used at LeMans then. They suffered engine problems.
Wizz Bang Great history. Like most Americans I've never seen the videos because of the misleading "1976" Charger reference. A 76 Charger is an overweight piece of crap Chrysler Cordoba with Charger badges. This clearly is a 1971 to 1974 B body 3rd generation Charger.
You'd need new suspension, new brakes, new gearbox probably too.. Lol I guess the only thing you would keep is the engine block, and that just kills the car and its spirit. Better leave it at old overly-heavy grumpy beast that goes slow but mean.
This guy is too worried about wrecking the car to really drive. Shame because she has so much in her. Hope to see some videos after he got used to driving her and got more comfortable.
Sweet ass car! Needs a better driver though, those cars were meant to driven hard, put some heat in those tires, get the motor nice n warm, then you'll be able to handle it and see the true power of Mopar!
He wasn't able to drive it as fast as he would have liked - they had a problem with oil on the clutch. You can hear the engine revving up when he tried to accelerate, due to the clutch slipping
Not a circle track car. Road Racing is real driving, left turns, right turns, hairpins, J hooks, chicanes, corkscrew, crest banks just to name a few. Regular NASCAR circle track car would get eaten alive my one of these monsters. Anybody can go fast in a straight line, real drivers go through twistys like nobody's business.
@@bultacowally I'm 57 yrs old. I started drag racing at 15. I street raced into my mid 30s and have been on countless drag strips. I was introduced to road racing in my 20s and started making the transition to road courses and phased out drag racing. Believe me when I tell you, a road course is REAL driving. I run a 1/4 mile or more every time I come out of a corner for MANY corners and not a one and done for 10 seconds. Until you drive a road course, you will never understand and I can't make you. Drag racing is all about who has the deepest pocket to be fast. I lived in, I payed for it and I can promise you, a road car is 10 times more fun than a drag car. Drag racing, the car does the work and you go for a ride. Yeah, you gotta shift for a couple seconds but all the hype is at the line, when the light turns green you go for a ride. Im tired of going for a ride, I enjoy driving where it's me and the car over many turns, left and right carrying all the speed possible through different corners. Sorry my friend, that's just an experience that CAN'T be duplicated in a drag car. Been there, done that and not interested in drag racing anymore. So let's take your drag car and follow me into a decreasing radius downward corkscrew and then up to a highside bend in the other direction while maintaining speed and control and we'll see how you and your drag car fair out. After you have crashed, I'll offer you a ride and you WILL leave drag racing behind too. If you can't appreciate the feel of a road course then how bout we agree to disagree because at this point you're no more gonna make me go back and enjoy drag racing than I'm gonna make you love road racing. Take care
In all honesty, the best platform Chrysler had to circuit/track race was the A-body- not the B- or E-bodies. Look up Scott Harvey and Team Starfish. Very successful rally efforts with Valiants and A-body based Barracudas. But when the Corporation wants to pimp a "Sportier" image vehicle, the facts get pushed aside...
Cudas and Challengers were Trans Am cars like the Mustang, Camaro, Cougar, Javelin, Firebirds for SCCA road racing. Couldn't run the pony cars in NASCAR. Had to be a two door sedan.
+gRosh08 So would you be with oil on the clutch and a priceless car! It's easy to say shit like that when you're not the one owning or driving the car.

It's an ex NASCAR vehicle, so it's not built to take sharp turns :) In addition it probably has bias ply slicks, so they don't give that much lateral traction as radials. Historic Trans Am will show You cars, that handle and accelerate quite great :)
It handles like a barge because it's a barge. Highway car designed for comfort. US still makes body over chassis cars because it's modular. Allows parts be altered easier for hard use and easy replacement. Not only are the main components modular but the sub-components or sub components of those components as well.
The 3rd gen Charger has a monocoque chassis. The engine is 2/3's behind the front axle, so it's close to being a front/mid engine design. Depending on how it's configured, it's possible to get close to a 50/50 weight balance. How it handles depends on what year and what options. 73-74 have a softer suspension design, since the oil crisis and rising insurance rates forced a shift to luxury, instead of performance, throughout the American car industry. 71-72 cars can be set up to handle rather well, if you're willing to accept a rough ride.
I was 19 when youtube came out, and so far this is the angriest car here. Love it

Badass car. Love the vintage livery. I'd so have something similar if I had a modern Charger

you can see the Charger in LeMans in july '14 (LeMans Classic) ... or maybe in November 2014 in Daytona, there is also a 24h Classic race...
