      You should watch Fringe up to the end of season five and see how brilliantly John Noble showed the entire world how much a father can love his son. I have absolutely nothing against Breaking Bad, I really LOVED every last bit of it. I was dramatically hooked by it. But Fringe made me cry much, MUCH more. If you missed out on it you should totally give it a try :)

    I love how Bryan describes his realisation of Walt's depression! It just gives me chills. I don't know if I'm the only one, who thinks like that but I feel so much empathy for Walt in the series. He is kind of his own victim and he pulls everyone else with him, although no one is deep down as destroyed as him. He's dead inside at a very early stage of the show. From then on he's just Heisenberg masking himself with Walter White but Walter White is just dead. He did not kill himself, he's just dead...

    • @juancpgo
      @juancpgo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Yessss. In the final episode Walter confesses to Skyler that he did it for himself because it made him feel alive, so your comment is spot on. The series is very dark because it's basically a man of the highest potential possible (a genius scientist) who never got to manifest none of it. He is ignored and mocked by his students, his son is oblivious to him and is a fan of his brother in law who makes fun of him in front of his family and we see he doesn't feel right. In the first season, Walter struggling endlessly with the decision to kill the bad guy, it's horrible. Then the awful and disgusting way they got rid of the body… good lord. It's such a dark show. Also it's dark in how Walter never improves morally, it's just continuous degradation. At points I almost gave up watching.

    • @Lombreee
      @Lombreee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Damn, I love this comment. Just watched breaking bad for the 2nd time (& it's been 6 years since I watched it the 1st time). Now that I'm almost 30 Walters character at the beginning I could empathize with so much more & truly see the sad darkness of his life. I also could see the true terrible decisions he made with more clarity. Overall depression & death of Walter white makes so much sense.
      This comment just really explains it perfectly.

      AMML I just binged the show during quarantine (I’m surprised myself-but I was of the mind that Bryan couldn’t pull off the role realistically. I knew him as Hal lmfao. So I put it off for years. I was laughably wrong lol.) Anyways you and OP are right on the money. And I had the same feelings in regards to Walt throughout the series. I pitied him and just wished his life and relationships weren’t completely irrevocably destroyed. By the choices he made brazenly. And I’m glad Bryan mentioned S1 pre-Jesse team up Walt as someone living life through the mental fog that is depression. It completely gives explanation to later his actions. Of course it absolutely does not excuse his immoral actions but it does inform why he made certain choices. And how his mind settled on staying in the business beyond the 737 goal. Also I think this theory (of Walt being majorly depressed) is supported by Walt plainly having suicidal ideation. Talking about the perfect time to die and the one moment he almost got into a collision with a car. Adding on, Mike’s comment about Walter being a ticking time bomb was just the perfect metaphor for Walt. Ofc at that point in the series it more directly signaled the new Walt/Hesinburg hybrid that was far gone from being able to listen to a grounded still morally responsive Jesse. And overall signaled Walt would be the demise of Jesse. But at least in the ground scheme of things Walt was a ticking time bomb-and I say this not in reference to whether Walt was going to be bad inevitably. But more so that without the diagnosis I don’t think he would’ve held on much longer. Especially if he felt like his family didn’t need him any longer. But they did because they faced an onslaught of debts and upcoming expenses. Cancer was yet another thing out of his control but cooking meth (being important/powerful because of it, his creation being deemed highly) + easing his family’s financial troubles (originally) was something in his control. Lol sorry for the weird Walter White character analysis. I definitely agree with y’all.

    • @Corn0nTheCobb
      @Corn0nTheCobb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ^ I didn't read that whole wall of text but I agree with not believing Bryan could pull off this role believably after knowing him as Hal for so long. He definitely surprised us big time.

      I also have a lot of empathy for Walter, I very recently finished the series and watching interviews and reading comments I quickly realized there are not a lot who do. I can't call Walter a good guy, but I can't call him an evil guy either. I just can imagine a version of him who could have avoided all of the biggest mistakes that make him unredeemable, and it wouldn't be too far from the version of him who does.

    • @hatman4818
      @hatman4818 5 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Wow, is that true?
      ... Honestly, I think the show would’ve been run of the mill without him.
      Personally, I think I liked Bryan Cranston’s performance a bit more, but if Jessie had been killed off in season 1... I dunno... I think the show would’ve been mediocre at best, mostly because he plays an incredibly important story telling role.
      Breaking bad is quite literally a case study in very specific uses of writing techniques. Take, for example, Walter White. He is an old and incredibly smart chemistry teacher, really vanilla, not the sort of guy you’d expect to be a drug lord. Within a couple episodes, he becomes one of the most juxtaposed characters I have ever seen, which is one of the reasons he’s so interesting to watch. Jessie by comparison is kind of a nothing character, just some teen junkie. But that’s WHY he’s important, he immediately becomes a foil for Walter White. You’d expect some junkie to be interested in peddling drugs, not so much Walter. He’s also kind of a dumbass who didn’t do so well in school. These utterly contrasting character traits lead to interesting dialogue between the two. Had he been killed off in the first season... We’d lose that foil.
      And really what makes the show one of the BEST in my opinion comes down to character growth. Almost every character has some sort of growth they go through, but ultimately, Walter and Jessie are the two character’s you’re most interested in. What is striking about the show is that, who you’ve been following this entire time as the “good guy” really isn’t. Walter White goes through a negative growth I’ve not seen very often in shows or movies. He falls into a downward spiral of ever more violent and toxic behavior, going from a loving father and husband to a complete psychopath. By the end of the show, you’re not rooting for the guy... Rather, you kinda hate his ass, and wonder where he went wrong.
      Jessie, on the other hand, who ISN’T the main character, has an incredible positive growth. He goes from being some dumb junkie nobody to someone who’s grown in intelligence and maturity. He’s someone who grows a heart for certain people you didn’t expect to see there. You watch him struggle to kick addiction, and try to find a way out of the system he’s gotten himself stuck in. He’s truly trying to reform himself. He’s basically the secret protagonist. You wouldn’t know it from season one, but HE’S the one you care about and are rooting for at the end of the show.
      The complete and total role reversal and mirrored growth of the 2 main characters is a source of amazing writing. I thought it was all planned out from the beginning. How could it not be if it works so well and so flawlessly? So I’m literally astonished that all that was never supposed to happen and Jessie was supposed to die in season one... Really says volumes about the actor, that he can literally steal the spotlight like that, espescially from a guy like Bryan Cranston, who ALSO pulled an amazing performance out of his ass... Seriously, never expected the freaking dad from malcom in the middle to do so well in a serious role.

      Shreddie Herger I think it also has something to do with Aaron Paul liking to become the characters he plays, he used to go out at night as ‘Jessie’ if you like a hang out with crackheads and chainsmoke with them, I don’t think either of them are better or worse than eachother, they’re both just very different styles of getting into the characters, both phenomenal actors.

    • @A.A_xv
      @A.A_xv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Shreddie Herger Bryan Cranston is a very versatile actor. When u see Bryan Cranston in character, u see his character, not Bryan Cranston. Aaron Paul likewise is a terrific actor but like u said, I see a lot of Jesse in him, which isn’t at all a bad thing but u don’t really see much of a transformation like u would with Bryan Cranston.

      Highest Pixel count: 640 x 360 = 230400 pixels per frame
      Per one second: 230400 * 30 = 6912000 pixels per second
      Pixels for this video is: 3238 seconds * 6912000 = 22,381,056,000

I’ve heard about it so i decided to give it a chance. After watching breaking bad i tried to go back to sons but it just doesn’t compare at all. I think Breaking Bad constantly brings about the considerable shiver each time we think deeply of the spectrum of this show because we are ALL Walter White in a certain way : most of the times we are frightened by the radical choices we could make, this huge terror to burst into ourselves, this '' something else '' malefic, fascinating, warm, complete that we'll never be ready to face because we don't even try to open the breach... Like Walter White at the very beginning many people outside undergo, resigned, restricted in fear

    Believe it or not, I had not even heard of the show until the summer of 2016. I had almost completely stopped watching TV for several years due to being so busy in the military and some family issues for a few years, as well as work after I exited the military. When life finally settled down and I subscribed to Netflix in 2016 I was sitting around one evening and trying to find a good show to fall asleep to and came across Breaking Bad. From the first 30 seconds I was addicted and I most definitely didn't fall asleep. I ended up getting my girlfriend, mom, dad, step-mom, and a couple of friends hooked on it as well. THANK GOD the series was done when I discovered it because I was able to binge watch it all the way through. I'm a late bloomer of the series, just watching it this year. Starting from season 1 episode 1 through to the last and, as with this series, Walking Dead and now "Better Call Saul," I enjoy so very much the ability of the actors to take us on a journey with them. Putting the show aside for a moment, great artists and great art penetrate deeply and while in Breaking Bad, the drug element was necessary in order to give the show it's shock value, the real story was not about drugs. The show could have enjoyed several more series with no problem whatsoever; it's difficult to imagine how they could have diluted it at all. So thanks guys. Thanks for everything.

    Most of us can't tell where RDJ ends and Tony Stark begins... and when Cranston is describing Jane's death, I can't tell if it's Bryan Cranston or Walter White "narrating" the scene. You know an actor is good when they can switch in and out of character so quickly and easily. And then Paul (perhaps as Pinkman) ending that anecdote with "what a dick". Love it.

    Glad they didn't do the scene with Jane as they originally were supposed to, it would have been too much. And they did take chances with Walter, especially in season 4 with Brock, because it seems a lot of people disliked him after that, and I wonder if some disliked him so much that they stopped watching the show.

      What they went with was soooooo much better and more controversial. I had the distinct pleasure of being a member of the BrBa message board on IMDb, hundreds of us posting and dissecting and arguing over whether Walt was really responsible or not legally, morally, etc. Oh, the good ol’ days. The show was so good, there was very little trolling on that board. I wish these guys knew how much of a testament that was to them and what they created!!!

    It's absolutely fascinating to listen to Bryan Cranston talk about acting. I'm not an actor by any means but to hear him talk about his thought processes when developing Walter White is inspiring to say the least. His answer at 50:56 was something that I feel both writers and actors can draw from when bringing great characters to life. Hell, even Vince Gilligan is drawn in by his response at 53:00 when Cranston brings up his Dad in reference to the physicality of the character. Cranston is a true master of his craft.

    The best part of the play given by chemistry teacher and Aron Paul relationship is amazing, honestly the climax executed by cranston was simply superb. At last I was crying for his demise.

    Walter White and Jesse Pinkman were like Oil and Water - they don't mix, but when you add in some emulsifying agent(s) - Meth and Money, they worked together beautifully and formed something magical

    This seriously was an amazing OUTSTANDING show. It's the only show where I've tried to contact The writer(Vince Gilligan) to applaud his writing, and the only time I've bawled like a baby more than three times in this show. I've seen the whole seasons two times, and it gets better every time. The acting is beautiful work, and every character was chosen to indefinite perfection.

      Bernie2020 as much as we all ended up hating Walter white, his end really brought an emotional impact to me. Just the fact that we all went on this journey with him throughout the whole series, through his ups and downs, in some way or another he became a part of our lives. I was actually relieved when Jane was gone, I didn’t like her lol.

    We see them both as phenomenal actors. But Bryan's and Aaron's processes of getting there are so INHERENTLY different! I mean the amount of thought Bryan seems to have put into it all- to be able to come up with the perfect WEIGHT for his character, and his posture too! Whereas with Aaron, it seems to be all instinct! Amazing
