Glen, just want to say thank you. There's so many choices, it can be a lot. I've been watching so many DAW vids that it was giving me choice paralysis. I honestly needed a laugh to snap out of it. Ultimately it's not a big deal and there really isn't a wrong one. Except the pro tools SE I was using which would only record one track, crash, or do a number of other things that halted recording.
Talking Heads Glen looking slick. Side note, I'm curious what you think about Ardour. It's a donationware DAW that's been out for over a decade (released in 2005) seems pretty underappreciated. The minimum price for it is 1$ so it's practically free but very full featured. Extra side note, my full bedroom studio cost lest then pro tools ultimate holy shit.
I have an Audour license(might need to renew?), and plan to try it on linux. Most of my plugins don't have DRM. As long as they work, and that is the trick.
@@thatsameenergy Is it really any harder then other DAW's to learn? What was the last version of Ardour you tried? It's up to version 6.6 and they've made a lot of improvements. I feel like people always say other DAWs are hard to learn on but mostly because they are used to a specific DAW already.
@@thepagnaet6361 You probably know already but it was made for Linux, hopefully it does the trick. I get most plugins to work but have had some not work, haven't tried troubleshooting much though as my plugin collection is a mess. I first tried Ardour because I was recording on a super old Mac (15+ years old or so) and it was very limited in the software it could run. It had a shitty old garage band which ran terribly and couldn't handle most other DAW's, Ardour is made to work on minimal/old set ups though and worked great. Ended up sticking with it after upgrading computers.
Extremely underrated DAW. Very powerful and I used it for years (in fact the original UnaStudia theme that comes with it is made by me). There was but one BIG issue back in the day with using it on linux: the lack of professional fully compatible 3rd party plugins.
What tools do you guys use in either of these software packages that something free like Audacity doesn't have? Combining multiple tracks with volume and balance settings *should* sound identical in any of these programs considering it's just digital arithmetic behind the scenes, which is why I'm asking the question. What beyond just *mixing tracks* is used by most people? (I'd also say something open source like Audacity has the benefit that computer savvy people can also create their own plugins, which some of the big brands don't allow.)
I am a new Reaper user. I had read it was complicated. I have an old QX49 midi KB comtroller connected and have mapped some knobs etc. Haven't seen complexity yet. Some of the menus could be intimidating - but hey, are YOU easily intimidated??? My real difficulty is learning to play the piano. Love the suit idea BTW really retro.
This is brilliant! 😂😂 I demoed PT First and it crashed with 3 instances of the stock EQ several times, while in Reaper I had 10 instances of Slate VMR and was fine. Emailed support asking if the "real" version was the same, never got a response. End of my Avid pursuit.
Hi man, congratulations on the content. I had already reached these conclusions at the beginning of my career as a music producer. But your way of communicating is awesome! Thanks!
I use my ps3 controller as a midi instrument. I attach a piezo found from trashed electronics to my acoustic guitar and vst to a midi instrument. Melodyne works. So much to explore and learn with Reaper so i dont think this is true that pro tools is better. The onlu downside to Reaper is that it is truly complex and complicated to learn but once you overcome the learning its fucking amazing this exists for recording.
One thing I love about living in Canada: everyone is fluent in sarcasm! Thank you for this amazing love letter to the greatest DAW ever created (second only to FL Studio), ProTools!
Reaper is great tbh. I bought the license for it a few years ago and it was definitely worth it for a number of things. Super modular. I have different layouts for different types of projects, music, voice over commentary, you can even inject videos from your phone or camera and tweak the audio from those. Reaper is great and I’m still learning a lot. You and BoothJunkie helped me get started and understand the software when I was still using the free version before I mostly understood it and paid for it. Tbh I’ll never switch from Reaper. It does wonders for whatever I need.
@@salintium Well I wasn’t to impressed with a Fender Custom, and want to trade in my CS336 as I don’t really get along with it. So it’s bad. Hype and trading on a name. In my opinion.

How long do you guys spend configuring Reaper? I spent a month with customisations and learning everything but guess what, went back to PT and S1...Although I think Reaper is a fantastic DAW I needed more time to get used to it. Does the Reaper tweaking ever ends?
Great stuff Glenn, I always love your humor and support of Reaper. I wanted to make a comment about first DAW. Studio Vision Opcode was out way before Pro Tools. Of course the first workings of it was just midi, and we had to SMPTE time code it along with a cassette recorder. Secondly, you are right about a lot of music schools and what they teach, however, as a Graduate of Berklee College of Music, Berklee preached "signal flow, signal flow, signal flow" and "learn various DAWs" They are animate about students learning various DAWs, and learning what makes each of those DAWs special. Back in 2004, Berklee was animate about using Reason's drum sequencer. Every DAW's drum sequencer copies off of Reason's initial drum sequencer. Back in 2004 , Digital Performer, Reason, and Pro tools were equally supported and taught. Back in the late 80s to early 90s, Studio Opcode Vision was the DAW that was heavily taught at Berklee. Secondly, I love Reaper and I use it, but my main DAW is Logic Pro. I have been keeping up my skills using Reaper because I see the writing on the wall with subscription based platforms. I predicted Pro Tools would go subscription base and they did. I predicted Adobe would go subscription based and they did. I predicted Logic Pro would go subscription based, and they did with their ipad version, I suspect the computer OS version will be right around the corner. I suspect Finale Notation software will soon be subscription, that is why I use Musescore along with Finale, in case I have to switch. I love Reaper a lot, and I will be ready to use it full time when Logic Pro goes subscription base, however, I love my Logic Pro, and I will use it until it goes subscription base.
Well done man. We used SoundTools back in the day for mastering before DAWs existed, (it was pre-Avid of course) then.... Digital Performer, Cubase, that's the direction we went, and now we use Reaper the majority of the time. Well said. You clean up pretty good too... you do look like Penn ... lol

If you go to any studio in LA, it will have Pro Tools whether you like it or not lol. No one is forcing anyone to buy it, but if you want to be a studio tracking engineer in a big market, then your gonna need to use it. That's just how it is.
Reaper is like the linux of DAWs, you need to download scripts to make it work a little big like the big ones, however Reaper is so stable and lightweight but as you say, if you going to produce seriously you need to use Protools
@@xddieci5716 I respect your opinion, but I wasted many years trying to work music production in linux with no success, I know is not linux fault, is because the software I use doesn't support linux or wine, Cubase and Protools doesn't have any feature-like substitute in linux, Ardour crash a lot, Reaper is too time consuming to configure to try to make it work for my needs, Qtractor is in beta since many years, Tracktion Waveform is buggy in linux, I cannot risk my musical production only because I want privacy or a different OS, however in this world will never have 100% privacy, Google spy you, Microsoft spy you, Samsung, Apple etc. we must to deal with it

@@PPMongo Even stock plugins can provide solutions, it just may take a bit more tweaking and a couple of dan worrall guides, lol.

So what happens after one year? You have to buy another "perpetual year" in order to get updates?

Talking Heads Glen looking slick.
Side note, I'm curious what you think about Ardour. It's a donationware DAW that's been out for over a decade (released in 2005) seems pretty underappreciated. The minimum price for it is 1$ so it's practically free but very full featured.
Extra side note, my full bedroom studio cost lest then pro tools ultimate holy shit.
Its hard as shit to learn tho
Sold! Where can I get my copy of Pro Tools?
Too early in the afternoon for this level of sarcasm, I'm going back to bed.
Prolapse has “pro” in it, but I don’t want one of those!
This video was hilariously entertaining
:D :D :D
What tools do you guys use in either of these software packages that something free like Audacity doesn't have? Combining multiple tracks with volume and balance settings *should* sound identical in any of these programs considering it's just digital arithmetic behind the scenes, which is why I'm asking the question. What beyond just *mixing tracks* is used by most people? (I'd also say something open source like Audacity has the benefit that computer savvy people can also create their own plugins, which some of the big brands don't allow.)
This video taught me how to understand sarcasm. FINALLY I won't be so offended all the time! Thank you Glenn!
Oh this weeks Viewers Comments is going to be called: Revenge of Industry Pro “Tools”
Oh yess! xD There's gonna be a lot of downvoting on this one!
I love it when Glenn puts on his suit. You always know it’s gonna be a good one when he does.
Thanks!
I feel like the dynamic range of Glenn's rants has Led Zep-like classicness
And that's why us Australians get on well with Canadians, similar sense of humour
I switched to Reaper a few years ago from ACID (that I'd been using since '99). I've never looked back.

"Hey maybe he's playing devil's advocate and showing ways PT does actually have a leg up on the competition"
*Saw the thumbnail*
"Oh"
Reaper is great tbh. I bought the license for it a few years ago and it was definitely worth it for a number of things. Super modular. I have different layouts for different types of projects, music, voice over commentary, you can even inject videos from your phone or camera and tweak the audio from those. Reaper is great and I’m still learning a lot. You and BoothJunkie helped me get started and understand the software when I was still using the free version before I mostly understood it and paid for it. Tbh I’ll never switch from Reaper. It does wonders for whatever I need.
Nahhh
As a bass player i approve of, and occasionally represent, all of your bass player burns. You sir are a comedic genius
Well Glenn, good news is if the whole sound engineer thing doesn't work out, you can become a body double for Penn Jillette.
I was thinking the same thing, same energy level also.
lmao. this was great. glad im not missing anything. what do you thing of cakewalk? i use FL studio. just dabbling in other daws.
Dude, I can't believe you wore a suit for this.
IKR the fact he mentioned Pro Tools alone gives him all the credibility he could ever need..
I’m astonished that he even owns a suit
Pro Tool sounds like the Gibson of recording.
So is that good or bad because I hate both Gibson and fender
@@salintium Well I wasn’t to impressed with a Fender Custom, and want to trade in my CS336 as I don’t really get along with it.

I downloaded Reaper to have something similar to Logic that would run on my windows laptop - never went back. Reaper with Renoise/Redux is the ticket for me. Now that I have everything setup how I want, I can do just about anything with a single mouse click/keyboard shortcut. Super efficient piece of software. It stays out of my way so I can keep things moving forward and get more done in less time. 👍

How long do you guys spend configuring Reaper? I spent a month with customisations and learning everything but guess what, went back to PT and S1...Although I think Reaper is a fantastic DAW I needed more time to get used to it. Does the Reaper tweaking ever ends?
I'll always prefer the feel of PT.
The sarcasm is real and this version of Glenn reminds me of every ad I've seen on TV and the internet
Businessman Glenn is so rare, it's somewhat scary 😅
Well said. You clean up pretty good too... you do look like Penn ... lol
The people running Avid are a bunch of professional tools… got it. 😉
LOVING THIS !!! I have Pro Tools, etc. etc. But I use REAPER for vast majority of work in studio. (I left a lengthy previous comment RE: Reaper on your earlier vid...1 year ago).
This really was great. Well done, and appreciated. --- Doug ("Crossbow)
If you go to any studio in LA, it will have Pro Tools whether you like it or not lol. No one is forcing anyone to buy it, but if you want to be a studio tracking engineer in a big market, then your gonna need to use it. That's just how it is.
That's why I got it, though I got it on the cheap when it came as a free license with the cheapo Fast Track Duo interface. Hate the game not the DAW.
Reaper is like the linux of DAWs, you need to download scripts to make it work a little big like the big ones, however Reaper is so stable and lightweight but as you say, if you going to produce seriously you need to use Protools

I love all the crashes from pro tools. Helps me practice my screams.
Honestly that sounds like a you problem. I rarely have crashes on PT. Even my lowly home version. I mean it does happen, but I run PT at work 8 hours a day 5 days a week and I might have a crash once or twice a year.
