I believe that you can apply lens correction in-camera but that it often does more harm than good. Do you have any further info or resources on this? Very interested to learn more
@@seandewispelaere I just checked this with a 20mm lens. The in-camera lens correction is indeed applied to video files and it works pretty good. Are you really sure that the distortion of the sigma is definitely a knock-out-criteria for your video-work?
@@ogmstudios9914 you’re right I think that the in-camera lens corrections are a good option. I was under the impression to never turn those on... I’d say that this absolutely changes things. I still do prefer the Zeiss for the OSS but yea definitely a different landscape now. Pinning your comment in hopes that people see it
@@fauzanjamahat1 I think the Sigma is for sure worth a look after the lens correction comment that OGM Studios made above. I do still lean towards the Zeiss but think that all 3 are winners for their own reasons.
I decided on the Zeiss before coming here, but you are the only channel pointing out the pincushion cannot be fixed in video. That, was really valuable and nobody else said anything as I guess they only view it as a portrait lens.
Thanks but I was wrong about that and it can be resolved in-camera. That said, I still prefer the color renders out of the Zeiss vs the Sigma. Thanks for checking out the video.
Great and insightful video like always! As I switched from Canon to Sony i sold my glass and bought sigma 24-70 f2.8 to pair up with a7siii, 85 is my next go to and this vid made few things clearer 👊
I've been looking at 85mm for video for my FX30. This really helps me decide. Thank you! And, yes, with the Zeiss' OSS feature I think it is worth the cost difference.
Great breakdown! Thanks so much. Also, I think it's a totally valid point to pick a lens because of the "look". When you look at them side by side it's usually subtle as it should be. If two lenses were worlds apart then one lens must be way off. But the subtle different approaches become more and more noticeable I find when you push and pull the image in post.
Great video! You helped me a lot, a bit short and not very detailed AF test, do you know which lens has the best autofocus? I'm interested in Sony FE 85 f1.8 and Batis 85 1.8 :)
Awesome video, I think you covered it best when compared to others. I'm leaning towards the Zeiss, to me pixel peeping and super sharpness doesn't matter as much as subjective wow factor when taking images, the colors, bokeh and the general "vibe" for a lack of a better word. My 24mm GM has that wow factor, looks like out of these 3 Zeiss would too.
Hi im new to photography planning to buy an 85mm lens and not sure if i'll go for sigma or the sony 1.8.. i use it for posting on facebook, instagram or maybe for printing soon.. almost all reviews show that the new sigma 85mm is sharper and my question is will the sharpness of the sigma still be better and noticeable when i post it on social media even though instagram and facebook have photo compression?
I'd be shocked if anyone would be able to tell the difference in sharpness. I'd go with which one you want based on other components of the lens, with these choices, I don't see sharpness as a factor, but everyone is different. Thanks for checkin out the channel and all the best, let me know where you land!
This was really interesting, even though I'm not in the market for an 85mm lens. For a future video you might explore in more detail what you touched on at the end: The combo of stabilization in a lens along with the a7Siii's Active or Steady stabilization.
Now that you know you can correct the distortion in camera, would you pick the sigma 85 over the rest? Which 85 worth to get if money is no issue at the moment?
Having a zeiss and i think its fantastic lens and i dont know if i ever sell it. Nothing bad to say about this lens! Crazy sharp and beauty image! I recccomend ;)

Where do you think the Sony 85mm 1.4 GM fits in all this? I just bought it used it's in the mail, and I'm watching all the reviews again and I'm thinking I should go Zeiss. I want something for both video and photo. Which is why I picked the Sony GM over those other three you showed. But idk. My wallet is bleeding. (Using a A7rIV)
Real solid, detailed review. The autofocus on my 55mm 1.8 has served me well. Optically, I am sold on the Zeiss. The only thing I am wondering is if the "near silent" would be good enough to capture audio with a run and gun hotshoe shotgun. Have you tried this?
It is a non-issue with all of these lenses. I haven't used the 55 1.8 in a while so I can't comment on that. Thanks for checking out the channel, Marty.
Looking for a range of primes for an FX6/A1. I'm battling between the Batis and the G Master. I like the consistency of quality and filter threads of the Batis againsts the GM. Although the later offer bigger F apertures. What would you recommend? Mostly for video
What’s up, Demir?! Shoot I should have mentioned that I used to have that lens and hated it for video. Loud and slow AF was a killer. Nice image though.
zeiss and sigma lenses color looks absolutely TRASH 🗑️, whats the point of paying 1000+ dollars for a lense that’s going to give you smartphone level quality 😂
I personally would go with the Sigma........great build, excellent optics, and the f/1.4 aperture (nearly twice the light of the f/1.8 options). The batis was great in its day, when it was first introduced, since it had built-in IS, during a time when the camera bodies of the day lacked IBIS. ALL of the current Sony FF bodies have excellent IBIS, and thus the built-in IS is no longer as important. To me, the Batis is significantly overpriced at $1200. With the optically similar and more featured Sony at 550$ (or 600$ list), I think the Batis (with some credit for its built-in IS) makes sense at around 750-800$. But the new Sigma (the DG DN version), eclipses both the Batis and the Sony, in all objective measures for optical performance.......sharper at all apertures, with excellent acuity and micro-contrast, right from wide-open (on my A7RIV). I value optical excellence, especially in a prime, while I would be satisfied with less, in case of a more flexible zoom lens. For an f/1.4 lens, the new DG DN Sigma is very petite (I think it is the smallest f/1.4 lens across ALL options), while being optically excellent. But the Sigma (being an f/1.4) is bigger and heavier than the other two f/1.8 options, and something to be kept in mind.......when the lens-hood is put onto the Sigma, it looks MUCH larger/bulkier than the Sony/1.8 with its hood......and so portability is certainly better for the f/1.8 options.
i can' make my decision ...... batis vs sigma ...... my heart is saying sigma, but sean is saying batis ..... funny i shoot with rs2 and a7siii just like sean
@@seandewispelaere i just sold my 85 1.8 to replace with one of these two .... and can get the batis used at a bargain .... sigma will have to buy brand new ..... is there a noticable upgrade going to batis from 85 f1.8?
Isn’t the lens compensation of the a7iii applied to video files? Other Reviews of the sigma claim so.

Hey Skeptix, thanks for checking out the video. I wasn't a fan of the 85 1.4 due to a very slow and loud AF. Incredible lens besides that though.
