that1cameraguy New to Sony (A6300) from Canon... Debating which prime to go with? Which would you pick, just one and one only... Decisions decisions...
its all fine and dandy but i’m sticking with my batis 85, honestly i couldn’t imagine a world without it at this point, i barely have to do much in post as the colour and overall quality rendition are second to none
If you can’t tell the difference, then sure. But the zeiss is clearly much better in images. I don’t know, people keep harping about sharpness, that is the least important in lens. Like picking liquor according to the alcohol content.
updates on the firmware of the sony 85mm f/1.8 lens can be done in camera hooked to computer. With the zeiss batis you have to send it back to a dealer.
Very comprehensive video. Good job! I noticed you were in California close to where I used to live. If one lives in a harsher or wetter climate the extra $600 for the Batis is easier to accept because of the weather sealing. That combined with the image stabilization makes the price difference less significant. I'm in Chicago now and am going to the UK & Ireland this year so I'm going to buy the Batis. Thanks again for your video!
I just picked up the Batis for $719 on Deal of the Day at Adorama. - as a lighter travel and vacation alternative to my GM 85. That along with the Sony 24 F/1.4 makes for a versatile (24, 35’sh, 85, and 135’sh FLs) and light travel pkg.
This was very helpful. I like that you noted the different topics you would be addressing at the bottom of the screen. This way I knew which parts to fast forward too! Thanks.
Hemal Karambelkar The 90 seems to try hard to focus. You have to make sure you have the switch in the right zone, etc. The 85 1.8 simply focuses faster, has smoother bokeh. I only use the 90 for macro shots. (The 90 is more expensive, longer and heavier also).
I have a sony a6000 which doesnt have IBIS. I want a portret lens and im thinking about these two. I do only photography,is that an isue if i buy the sony 85 without stabilization and put the difference between this and zeiss for full frame camera upgrade? or get better the zeiss till i can afford and full frame upgrade? Thanks
I enjoyed your comparison, but feel you are overly concerned about the AF/MF button. One of the features of the Sony Cameras is that different buttons can be programmed for different functions. No need to go to the menu at all. On my a7R the c3 button takes me to focus selection, and simple enough to select MF without taking my eye off of the viewfinder. Perhaps one more "click" than the manual button, but really, no big deal. And, if you do not have in camera stabilization, the scales tip in favor of the Zeiss.
Hi. Im confused between the sony 85mm GM f1.4 and the new sony 85m f1.8. I want to ask if one has the budget for f1.4, will it pay to have it as a professional wedding photographer/cinematographer?
that1cameraguy Thanks a lot for your reply. As i can perceive, you seem to suggest that except for the extra stops of light, rest of the things like image quality and bokeh don't differ a lot in the two.
+apaar jain it depends on your needs, if the out of focus rendering is something you are looking for, you'll have to look at more examples online as I unfortunately have not had a chance to use the gm
Thanks for such a complete rundown. I note that there may be some sample variation. DXOMark rated the Sony as significantly sharper than the Batis, and found they had identical chromatic aberration.
Hi thank you for the video :) I hesitate with both, the most important for me is his reaction to the flare. Do you know which one in the best rendering with a sun in the background? As the 55mm 1.8 zeiss to a horrible flare, the edges are gray! Thank you !
I wonder why your Lightroom Loupe Info doesn't display *ZEISS Batis 1.8/85* for that lens. As for the Batis not having an AF||MF switch, what do you use the camera's AF/MF switch lever for?
I would prefer the Zeiss, because....zeiss... but having the manual 85/1.4 I'm not sure if the upgrade is worth, even tho it is plagues by cromatic aberrations...
I've been debating this for weeks. I think now I have enough details to go ahead with the Sony FE (once I scrape a few more nickels together). Thanks once again!
I've been shooting with the 85 1.8 for a week now. I love it. I did notice the CA on bright white areas (car chrome) when shooting in bright sunlight. But most of the time I'm not shooting super white areas. The bokeh is great. Creamy. It's my favorite lens now! Super sharp at 1.8, which is great news. Not too heavy or all that large. Just get it.
am currently still using 55 as my main lens on a7ii....still love it...but tempted to try this 85 focal range. Anyone have been through this case? please share and would like to hear the result
great comparison! please help! need your advise since you are an experienced photographer and have used different gear. i want to buy an 85mm for my a6000, but this is the thing, i would like to change my camera in a couple of years for an a7 model, and this is my dilemma, on the one hand, i was thinking in buying this sony 85 to futureproof my buy when i get my full frame camera, but on the other hand my camera came with the laea4 adapter, so i have seen the zeiss 85 f1.4 A-mount used in good condition on EBAY for as low as 800 dlls, what would you do? buy this sony 85 or the zeiss 85 for A- mount?
thanks for your reply, I know it is tough. I've seen many videos an all these lenses are great!. I guess I'll go with the full frame so I can use all features as it is a native lens for the E mount system. great work with all your videos!
I have LAEA4, used with a Minolta 85. AF is only on center points and noisy. I sold the Batis for 920, but I am half regretting selling it ($80 and something after ebay pp fees). May get the Sony, it would be great if it went down to 500. OSS is good to have but with 1.8 you may always be able to use a fast enough shutter speed
Nice video! I have the sony a7 which has no body stabilization, do you recommend the sony? Buying a second hand batis or buying a brand new sony with the same price?☺
batis is rendering better the colours!there is significant difference!if you look by the concern of value for money, then yes the sony 85 is a good solution,BUT if you care about the colours and the sharpness then BATIS!
The Sony and the Zeiss are both good enough and there’s no point in paying the Zeiss double. More so concerning the Sony GM 85/1.4 which costs about triple the Sony FE 85/1.8 and is much bigger and heavier. EXCEPT greenish ghosts when a strong light (mainly the sun) is in the photo frame. You do have them with the Sony FE 85/1.8 ; much less with the two others. But is it reason enough to pay double or triple given it’s mainly a portrait lens, rarely used to shoot into the sun?
Great video, I have the 6500 and batis 18 2.8 plus the sony 18 2.8 pancake lens. at first I thought I had wasted my money on the batis but have been using the batis on a digislider to restore a classic car and the video footage is mind blowing. I want the 85 batis but need to save up very hard now to get it.
...Well it say's on Sony's website that it is in fact ''dust and moisture-resistant design''. Not that i would trust it tho!! I do owned it, no seals or gaskets that i could see soooo i'll keep it as dry as possible!! ;)
I just bought the Sony two weeks ago, one big piece of dust somehow got into the inside of the lens through the rear element after just one week of use...
Nice comparison between the 2 lenses, in a long term use i think batis will serve me better, and yes like u said it's really nice to have a button in the lens ;)
i have the a7ii i would spend more money to get more colorful and sharp images, i guess ill go with batis i sold my 55 1.8 i need something similar to its sharpness ..
I'm sure you're familiar with Jason Vong, but he did a review of the Sony 85 vs the Gmaster, and the sharpness at 1.8 was on par from the examples he showed. I know I didn't do the lens justice with my image test.
Only over a year late lol but.. First let me say I loved your thorough breakdown! I’m definitely going Sony 85 because of the price! Huge factor! Thanks.
Great video. You used the Green Ranger.. He'll be in the next Power Rangers movie. I like how Sony has stepped up the quality on their lenses, even the "affordable" ones.. I think I'm going to focus on getting a new Sony Camera that has the IBIS.. then I can get affordable lenses like this
Who the fuck sees the image in 100 % zoom ? And if you print , nobody looks at all these crap. Stabilization does not matter in portrait primes in my opinion.
Nice comparison, seems the Sony did quite well overall given the price difference 😃 I think if it were me however I'd still be prepared to pay the extra and buy the Zeiss instead because it is only about a third more expensive than the Sony here in the UK.
Dude! Stop making faces! Have you seen your own footage? Come on! Do not tell people "what should you buy...!" I understand, they not that smart, who with the any brain will watch you making faces but still, stop telling Sony herds what to buy. At least 95% of them are idiots!
I didn't specify in the video, but the autofocus performance on the Batis 85 is actually really good. They both compare very well with each other.

Thanks man! You're the first one to actually hold the two damn lenses next to each other to see the physical difference.
LOL
If you can’t tell the difference, then sure. But the zeiss is clearly much better in images. I don’t know, people keep harping about sharpness, that is the least important in lens. Like picking liquor according to the alcohol content.

damn so in-depth! Great job, Danny!
Thank you sir!

Me : "Which one is the cheapest?.... I'll take that one, thank you"
This was very helpful. I like that you noted the different topics you would be addressing at the bottom of the screen. This way I knew which parts to fast forward too! Thanks.
How about viltrox 85 mm 1.8 for sony?
what about weather sealing? the batis looks a bit more resistant to rain.
I considered both of these but I ended up getting the 85mm GM because YOLO.
Nice, how are you liking it.
I'm not op, but i would think it's ok
$300 difference I see a used batis.
So is the Batis 85 worth $300 more?
I would be glad if you could do a comparison between new Sony 85mm FE Vs Sony 90mm G OSS lens. Thanks in advance
Sadly I don't have the 90mm, but if I got my hands on it I would.
batis 85/1.8 vs fe 90 macro please
Hemal Karambelkar The 90 seems to try hard to focus. You have to make sure you have the switch in the right zone, etc. The 85 1.8 simply focuses faster, has smoother bokeh. I only use the 90 for macro shots. (The 90 is more expensive, longer and heavier also).
It's pronounced "BAT-is". It's German. Bat as in Batman.
You comparing i with Batis 85mm or new Sony 85mm ?
Such a great comparison, more comprehensive than other reviews. Thank you and keep them coming. God bless
Thanks. I appreciate the kind words.

I just packed up my Zeiss. Returning to Amazon. Ordering the Sony!. Thanks for the great review.

It would be nice to check if you can notice a difference in video stabilization between the sony and the batis on a7rii.
Hi. Im confused between the sony 85mm GM f1.4 and the new sony 85m f1.8. I want to ask if one has the budget for f1.4, will it pay to have it as a professional wedding photographer/cinematographer?
+apaar jain if that extra 2/3 stop of light is important to you, than yes.
that1cameraguy Thanks a lot for your reply.
Simply by looking at 3:42, the sony lens loses so much mirco-contrast even in not so harsh light condition.
Ive tried the Sony 85mm on my A6500 & got great results .. just need to get my own copy now
Hey please give your instagram id
what is your opinion, for sports the EF 85 mm 1.8?
Can you show me how to shoot videos on a Sony a6400, I am totally new about shooting video, thanks!
Thanks for such a complete rundown. I note that there may be some sample variation. DXOMark rated the Sony as significantly sharper than the Batis, and found they had identical chromatic aberration.

best in-depth camera channel on youtube.
I wonder why your Lightroom Loupe Info doesn't display *ZEISS Batis 1.8/85* for that lens.
As for the Batis not having an AF||MF switch, what do you use the camera's AF/MF switch lever for?
BATIS 85 1.8 have OSS? what about other batis?
Do you fear in field Lens changes because of sensor exposure?
I fear a piece of rock, lint, etc. falling onto the sensor.
No problem man. Always glad I can help in some way.
you need to follow suit with Jason V and setup a paypal
batis color is better
hey guys, i'm new to the a6500. does anyone know which lens are compatible with the EYE-AF on the a6500?
I've been shooting with the 85 1.8 for a week now. I love it. I did notice the CA on bright white areas (car chrome) when shooting in bright sunlight. if i have image stabilization in the camera, does it even make any difference if the lense has one/hasn't one?
lekarrer you get more stabilization if you have in camera and lens
alot of people don't realize this , but it is true. it's a like a 2nd safeguard.
The 85 MM isn't OSS is it?
I wouldn't be able to use it on my A6300...
Hey Dave, you can still use it for stills, just not for handheld video.
=(
the Batis has stabilization :D
great comparison!
please help! need your advise since you are an experienced photographer and have used different gear.

Great Comparison! Would of probably bought the Sony but I already dropped all my $ on the G Masterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Thanks. It should be worth it though, right.
great comparision!
Thank you for this clear statement / opinion. This decision gave me a hard time!
nice work man!!!!
Thank you!
due to the inconsistencies of the AF/MF switch, you can set a custom button to do this, OR when you set AF types, you MF there.
hey that1cameraguy,You forgot to point out that the sony 85mm is not weather seal/rubber gasket.Nice video bro
Good point. Thanks!
...Well it say's on Sony's website that it is in fact ''dust and moisture-resistant design''. Not that i would trust it tho!! I do owned it, no seals or gaskets that i could see soooo i'll keep it as dry as possible!! ;)

if
any one wants to see what some the photos look like with the sony @w4edigital on ig
love my sony 85 i have that and the 50mm save money
Hey camera guy did you get my message
Taking a look now.
the price difference is insane tho
I hv a6300 and sony 85mm... and i use a gimbal ❤☺
The Batis is always a bit sharper than the sony, clearly.
It's been a while
It has been.
i think the zeiss has more contrast
Yeah, I notice that slightly too.
You look very tired.
