From Wiki : Spirit, MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover -- A), is a robotic rover on Mars, active from 2004 to 2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars Exploration Rover Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground UTC on January 4, 2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B), landed on the other side of the planet. Its name was chosen through a NASA-sponsored student essay competition. The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010.
The rover completed its planned 90-sol mission. Aided by cleaning events that resulted in higher power from its solar panels, Spirit went on to function effectively over twenty times longer than NASA planners expected following mission completion. Spirit also logged 7.73 km (4.8 mi) of driving instead of the planned 600 m (0.4 mi), allowing more extensive geological analysis of Martian rocks and planetary surface features. Initial scientific results from the first phase of the mission (the 90-sol prime mission) were published in a special issue of the journal Science.
On May 1, 2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27 Earth days after landing; 21.6 times the planned mission duration), Spirit became stuck in soft soil. This was not the first of the mission's "embedding events" and for the following eight months NASA carefully analyzed the situation, running Earth-based theoretical and practical simulations, and finally programming the rover to make extrication drives in an attempt to free itself. These efforts continued until January 26, 2010 when NASA officials announced that the rover was likely irrecoverably obstructed by its location in soft soil, though it continued to perform scientific research from its current location.
The rover continued in a stationary science platform role until communication with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). JPL continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24, 2011, when NASA announced that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive rover had ended. A formal farewell was planned at NASA headquarters after the Memorial Day holiday and was televised on NASA TV.
    Hope you enjoyed it!

@@elitecereal100 years ago it was the 1920s, and the first Mars rovers were already in the 60s and 70s, thanks to the space race of the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Since then, humanity has made almost no further progress in space. The number of lunar and Mars rovers has decreased by 12 times, compared to 70. People no longer went to the moon. Spacecraft were no longer sent to Venus, and the number of space stations was reduced from 5 to 2.

Just sitting in my living room gave me goosebumps and I've seen this vid several times and it never fails to make me feel proud!
Knowing today what those guys had no clue about... those two little guys, so over-engineered, and lasting as long as they both did, one even losing a wheel but still able to function, the sense of accomplishment would have been overwhelming!

+BlueDroid actually this is Spirit, not Curiosity.
Spirit was sent to Mars in 2004 and was "dead" 2010, due to a harsh winter. Because of that, it couldnt receive energy from Sun through its solar panels.
However, his twin Opportunity (sent 3 weeks later) is still alive, as well as 2012 Curiosity.

They landed another rover on the opposite side at the same time called opportunity. They were both expected to last 90 days but both lasted over 1500+, spirit 2 wheels of the 6 were stuck and ran out of power. But opportunity went for a while!
Congrats guys! Amazing job all around.
Just makes me wonder though, why haven't we found a cheaper way or a "free" way to stay connected with each other on earth if we can communicate and control robots millions of miles away? (think about what I'm asking, the internet is neither free, cheap or reliable)

Regarding Spheres in Space 🌍and Comets: The on screen CGI showing spherical ball🌝🌍⚽objects floating in "Space" is pure nonsense. Our Sun and Moon are local ionizing gas plasma luminaries, travelling within the Tropics. Earth is a fixed level Plane of existence made of fossilized, mineralized biology of mainly ancient Titanic Dragons🐉 some thousands of miles long, turned to stone (Limestone, and Granite) 🗻mountains. The term is nucleophilic substitution, flesh to stone. The 38 Transition Metals we use today literally came from these titans veins, and arteries. The mega titanic fish 🐟🐠🐡give us most of the (SiO2) Silicon Dioxide, and (Si) Silica Dessert sands, exactly like the Sahara titan fish desert ! You still here ? 💫 lol. Space "rocks" ie. Asteroids, Meteors (meat🥩) and of course Comets, are the tough fossil remains of these titans (mostly dragons🐉🐲). The Void of space and level Earth was called the "Raqia" in ancient Hebrew (Latin-Firmament), and "the Expanse" is so massive we get Hyperbolic, and Interstellar (now) Comets. Due to Magnetic Force, when these massive transition metal (conductive) laden space fossils get near Earth's dipole, the Anode is discharging electrons into the "Comet" nucleus and taking protons from it. The Comet is now a hot cathode from a cold state (far away) and Sublimation-Phase Transition (from solid to a gaseous state) is causing it to discharge Carbonaceous Dust and microbes etc. by the hundreds of Tons an hour (example) as a Type2 Comet science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2013/19apr_isonids above Earth. The 3600 yrs. ago Thera Eruption marked last cycle of energetic Comets, and it was called the "Shar" in ancient Sumerian, the "Completion of the Circuit". The electrical Shar is likely an intentionally induced 👽Cosmic Cycle, which adds raw material (Proton Density, Radial Velocity etc.) to the outer magnetic field of the Toroidal Vortex EMF above the level Earth. The "Solar Wind" is the measured strength of the EMF Torus (AKA magneto/heliopause) without it the harmful ionizing UVC radiation from the Void would make life on Earth impossible. The last Passover 3600 years ago (Minoan eruption) was obviously much, much worse. I figured this out, at far less than NASA $26 Billion a Year budget. 😎 I want a raise, dammit. lol 💲

It costs millions upon millions of dollars each year to maintain a crappy connection lousier than a dialup modem across a hundred million miles to Mars. In that perspective, your average telecom connection is millions of times higher in capacity, while being millions of times closer, so the two technologies are actually about on par, plus or minus a few zeroes

The animation part in this video is okay and it sure cost a lot to send a robotic rover to Mars, though it got stuck in late 2009 and its last communication with Earth was in 2010. What an effort NASA did to send such expensive equipment to that planet at the risk of not getting it back.
