I had this happen and found out that it was due to my gH and kH not being where they need to be. I have planted tanks and run them at 20ppm with no issues so it may be something like that since your setups are fairly new. I ended up adding a bit of crushed coral and supplement calcium every once in a while and my colony has bounced back.
@@vicaroo001 yup, if you cannot afford to buy Salty Shrimp's reminerailzers you can make up a half decent remineralizer with Calcium Sulfate, Magnesium Sulfate and Potassium Sulfate. You'll have to use a decent chemical scale and find a recipe for the volumes needed. Use food grade minerals.
Same happened to be but a little different, I have a goldfish pond outside the house and it was almost covered with different kinds of floating plants. So with this setup the GF was happy and healthy but one day when I do water change, I scrubbed almost all the algae that covers the inside pond and get rid half of the floating plants. A day or two after that I noticed that the GF's are lethargic and slime coat starts to fill their body. So I treated them and get well then when I brought them back to the pond a day after they are sick again and starts to die. So I have no idea what happened and i tested the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate they are all fine but when it comes to the PH it was so acidic. Before removing the plants everything was fine but after removing them the pond becomes unstable.
Nitrates? those sons o' bitches - shrimps don't like nitrates and it is a slow killer. I'm short of stock on media at present but as soon as I get stocked up again I'll end you some media down no worries. It will be a long term solution but plants are very important for soaking up nitrates if you haven't got filtration capable of achieving a full cycle. With shrimps you can have loads of plants as you did previously but a combo of nitrate reducing media and plants will ensure that the tank is fully cycled and stays fully cycled for long term shrimp health. If i had any water cress growing on my pond I'd send some of that down too as it is awesome for fast growth.
I know right :( I’m actually sketching up plans on how I can incorporate the media into the sponge filters. If it works it will definitely be a good DIY 😁 cheers Richard!
Hi, have you measured the rest of the perimeters as well? gH kH and pH ? Kinda seem like fail molt to me. Hope you get it sorted soon, sucks to lose shrimp. I personally keep frogbits + rotala and Crypt Wendtii in my shrimp tank and they take care of my nitrates even with no water changes for a month.
This situation happened to me once and I found out after watching few video and doing a bit of research and ticking all boxes, I found out that my shrimp tanks where poor on minerals because of the ro water, Salty shrimp wasn’t enough it helps but it’s beneficial for shrimp but not for water quality, so I got some Montmorillonite stone and some Mineral Powder for shrimp and after that I never had a single death and sorry for your loses, it’s heart breaking😔
Sad to see what’s happening to your shrimp, I had a similar situation in my CRS+RCS last month, and the RCS colony was wiped, only few adults of CRS survived and all its babies, that now are growing pretty well. I literally covered my 30 l tank with pistia stratiotes + lemna minor ,reduced from 50% weekly water change to 25%, and now everything is going well. I can’t tell you survived the CRS instead of the RCS, I would say the opposite. Hope you will resolve too
Been having the same issue for a long time now. Tested nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, copper, iron , potassium, GH, KH, PH, TDS, oxygen pretty much any and all testing kits available to see what was wrong. Well after buying all those kits every single test was within normal ranges. Ive tested every other day for 2 months everything is stable and within proper ranges but they still die one or two a day. Treated for bacteria and worms with medication and various other natural alternatives and they still continue to die daily. I use salty shrimp and RO/DI water as well. Even tried different tanks in case the one I'm using was tainted somehow. Tried different brands of foods even tried making my own food with organic veggies and protein so i knew exactly what was in it... They STILL die one by one. More food? still die. less food? still die. no food and just algae in tank? still die. Spent hundreds of dollars trying to figure this out and probably the amount of hours is in the days now of research trying to solve this. I've bought shrimp from different many sources in case my source was bad, but its the same story every single time. Also my tank is heavily planted so it is very efficient at sucking up nitrates. I have tried using no ferts, minimal ferts, normal ferts. It makes no difference they still die one by one. I removed all fake plants and decorations in case they were somehow leeching something bad, but it made no difference. I always have drip acclimated my shrimp and never actually lose them while acclimating its usually a few weeks later. I have even tried replicating the breeders water conditions with the breeder coming in person to help me but of course they still die. One breeder even suggested my tank was "too big" (75G) and that the shrimp "couldn't find each other" to breed, which is ridiculous in it self since how would they breed in the wild? But anyway I tried using a 10G and 20G to humor them, but guess what they still die. At this point I've given up and just gonna leave the tank and forget about it and hope it sorts it self out. Not worth the time or stress to bother with it. My advice for people looking into shrimp would be stick Cherry shrimp anything else is a waste of time and money.
Oh my gosh, I feel so sorry for you. You're doing so much for your shrimps & read that you can't figure out why your shrimps are dying. A single pothos plant would sort that nitrate out very quickly. Available at any garden centre. Although plenty of people keep shrimp fine in 20ppm. Depends what they are used to i guess tho.
I got mysterious issues too. I added new plants yesterday. My shrimp all layed on their side this morning. Only occasionally twitching their legs. Took them into fresh dechlorinated water, added a heater and a high dose of fish vitamins and they recovered from their paralysis. I used aquarium salt in my tank and did a few waterchanges in case the plants brought something bad in. My annubias does have some wool stuck to it so I wonder if that is to blame... I still have to put them back into their tank they are in a box with a tiny filter atm
@@roan6125 Yeah. It was water pest from asia and appearently those retain pesticides for ages. Water changes now, and add plants, you could put plants outside as well with the roots in the water column like pothose. Amquel And some other chemicals will neutralize the high nitrates for now but you still need to take them out with water changes
Thanks for sharing. Sorry you lost your shrimp. Hope they have bounced back by now. Can you please tell me where I can find those little cubes you had the moss in?
Shrimps eat the MicroOrganisms growing in and on moss, not algae, nor moss itself, they love moss for a reason, that not only it feeds them, but also moss specifiek system of keeping ammonia and nitrate etc low, is the key
It was the general slow deaths that put me off shrimping, so I feel for ya dude! Maybe chuck in some bog standard "oxiginating plants" (elodea etc) that most garden centres sell? Silly fast growth and the remaining shrimpies would love it for hiding in.
Argh! I'm going through this very same thing with my Cardinal shrimp. It is very upsetting. I'm losing a few each day. I think it was because we didn't drip acclimate properly!
What about an Amazon sword or java fern to suck them nitrates up aswell as adding more grazing area? If you want to take it out to make it easier for catching the shrimp you could always glue a java fern to a nice stone
i just lost a crab, shrimp and few snails. id let my nitrates get to around 35 as a few softy corals like it, I guess it was too much for the invertebrates. I didnt expect that ::(
This kind of helped me figure out what happened with the ghost shrimp i had in my tank. I'm going to get some plants and get them growing before I try to introduce shrimp back into my tank
I am going through the same thing in my shrimp planted tank , i added a M5 oxigenator from Twinstar , i have almond and walnut leafs and i been adding Bacter AE to my shrimp tank and suddenly my shrimps show up dead at least 4 to 5 every week , So i decided to take everything off at once to see if i can stop what ever is killing them.
nice video. always appreciate the info. i wonder if you could help me figure out why my baby shrimp are dying off. i have a 5 month old, 3 gallon nano low-tech shrimp-only tank, set up with some small drift wood & Japanese stones (sorry forgot the name), lots of plants, on a 1/2" bed of aquareon substrate and sand. i started the tank with guppies, then 2 month in, switched to all cherry shrimp. some of the first badge of cherries came home already berried; so slowly a second generation of cherries began to appear. i now have about 10 adult and 20 teenage cherries thriving. last month i introduced some berried blue bolt and berried orange females; i immediately started to see some babies swimming around, however they disappeared after a few days. eventually all the mamas became un-berried; but no babies in sight. the same thing happened last week after i put in some berried blue-blots and rilis; i started to see some babies initially, now they're all gone. there're no predators in the tank. in the past some baby shrimp would travel to the back compartment of the tank where the filter is, though not this time. i'm increasing feeding Bacter AE from 1 to 3 times a day, while adults are being fed Shrimp Dinner and Mineral Junkie once a day. here's the water parameters: ph 7.1, kh 4, gh 12, ammonia/nitrite,nitrate 0, tds 260, temp 72-75. sorry for the long message, any
This happened to me as well, but here two shrimps died per day. Luckily the toxins dissipated and now. I bought some more shrimp, which are all living happily in the tank.
I just had the same issue with my tank and I installed a nitrax filter from juwel and that did the trick. Well at least for now, nitrate level got really low in just a few hours
Hi, I don’t have shrimps in my tanks. But I do have a nano 2.5 gallons tank where I have had shrimps before, also a betta fish. But I noticed that my ph would drop to near 6 if I don’t do weekly water change. Maybe that’s another sign
Hi, Last week I bought 10 Blue Bolts for my 30L Nano Cube that has been cycling for over 5 months before I added the shrimp to the tank. The first few days they seemed to be doing great a few shrimp molted without any problems, they were looking for food etc.. but then on day 5 the first shrimp died during the night. The other shrimps started hiding a lot more and weren't as active as they were before. I've tested for Nitrite and Nitrate these parameters are fine. Today I could only count 7 shrimp, I don't know if the others are hiding somewhere or if they have passed away too. I couldn't find any bodies so far, so I'm still hopeful. But something is up with the shrimp since their behaviour is kind of odd. Most of the time they just sit there doing nothing, aren't shrimp supposed to be a lot more active? My Amano shrimp are very active all day all night. They wont take any food I give them, they only feed on the algae in my tank .Are there any other reasons why shrimp would behave like this? And is there anything I can do? I'm worried if I don't do anything they might start dying on me one by one.
if you are using RO water and mixing minerals consistently, in my mind, you dont have to worry about water parameter changes with large water changes because the water you will add is the same as the water in the tank, minus the nitrate... i mix RO water with minerals and leave it next to the tank so when ever i need to water change, in theory all parameters are identical from TDS to temp ect ect ect
I love my ghost shrimp. However I have noticed that they are not reproducing. The females will get heavy with babies but then POOF they are gone! Could the guppies be eating them? My betta never did years ago. I thought a few guppies would be safe...
I'll like to remind new viewers that household Pothos works great (or any other type that can have roots submerged in water). Cheap and works great along with aquatic plants (or not) when not heavily planted. Depending how many are added and bio load, zero nitrates is achievable!
Obviously didn't know people kept them as pets. I went fishing for food for my oxolotl this afternoon and caught a lot. An hour later 15percent were dead. Hopefully they're settled in now. Should I take the dead ones out or should I let the living ones eat them?
Hi! I have about six Blue dream shrimp in my community tank and it seems like all my females have turned brown and some have gotten harsh line down the back. What could be causing it? thanks in advance!
I know it's a crime but my nitrate is allways around 30, but never had any death issues even back when I had only supper slow growing plants in the tank, but recently I added 3 new types of plants my favourite is Heteranthera aka star grass i hear it grows like crazy, oddly enuf past 2 days iv had 3 shrimp die, but not major concern at the moment
I never ever put shrimp in a tank until I had some fish in the tank for over 3 months. Then I take the fish out check the water add lots of plants lots and then shrimp
My ammonia and nitrates are ok, but my nitrites are always high. Are the bacteria that cover ammonia to nitrite different from the ones that convert nitrite to nitrate? Why would I have high nitrites when the other parameters are ok? What can I do for this problem? I had one shrimp die today.
It should sort itself out. The fact that you have nitrite would indicate that you had ammonia first but it has been converted in nitrites. Now you just have to wait for it to be converted into nitrates.
sorry for your losses, but yeah recenty got into shrimp but have plenty of live plants, so im not running into problems as yet. but im sure they will come
Nitrate/Nitrite levels too high? Plants, plants and more plants especially plants that get nutrients from the water column like Java fern, subwassertang, Marimo moss etc, floating plants are great for this also.
I'm really sorry you're losing shrimp, but I'm glad you uploaded this video. My remaining Amano shrimp is doing well, but my nitrates are high, so I'm going to hang fire on the cherry shrimp until I've added a lot more plants. Do you have a larger tank where you can at least put one of the groups and relieve the bio-load on the new setup until the plants kick in?
Yeah I would hold fire for sure. Hopefully people can learn from my mistake. The only other tank I have set up is my crayfish tank with cichlids, I don’t think they would survive 😂🙈
Hello. I'm having the same problem myself, but only for my red hinomaru shrimps. In my tank, I have 8 zebrafish, 2 guppies, 6 red cherry shrimps, 3 blue diamond shrimps (one is actually currently full of berries), 3 yellow shrimps (one is also full of berries), 3 orange sunkist shrimps, and 3 red hinomaru shrimps. My tank is full of plants and my filter is actually doing great. Today in the morning, I found one of my red hinomaru dead. Then, about 6-7 hours later, I found another red hinomaru shrimp dead.. I don't know what causes them to die. Because all my other shrimps seems perfectly fine. No one is having infections, my tank is clean. The water parameters are also good.. Anyone knows why? (red hinomaru shrimps are expensive and I just bought them about a week ago :( I'm actually very sad that 2 of them died already.. eventho they seem fine yesterday. I hope the other one will stay alive..)
Pothos, Pothos, Pothos! Get some cuttings and place the cut ends in the tank to root, or place it in a HOB filter. Pothos sucks up nitrates like a sponge. I'd also step up the water changes to every other day 1% total volume change, feed less and less often. Also add some watersprite, which is a great nitrate sucker upper.
Thank you for you help! We are getting a plant delivery in at work tomorrow so I'll get first pick of the nice one that should help. I also picked up a Pothos today :D
@@SimplyShrimps I recently discovered something that I would love to share. I had my first and successful shrimp tank in 2018. 12 TO 200+ IN 6 months. But I got busy with work and lost it. Then I tried 4-5 times again but shrimps would die within a month despite all the parameters being right. 2 month back I tried again. Then had to be out of town for 3 weeks, so told Mum to feed them. Surely I thought when I returned, all the shrimps would be dead. But Surprisingly they were all alive with a few babies! The tank light was off for 3 weeks. After I got back I kept the lights on for 7-8hrs a day and I started losing shrimps. I did some thinking and realized that my very first successful tank had duckweed and this time the shrimps were fine when the lights were off. So I came to the conclusion that excess light could be damaging my tank. I don't know whether it affects the water temperature or causes stress to the shrimps. I might be wrong, But this has been my experience. Just thought I should share it with you coz I remember commenting to this video 2 years back. I am talking about my experience with Cherry Shrimps and currently I only have Java Fern, so even natural day light is enough.
the black patches on the side of that shrimp look suspiciously like copper poisoning, too much copper causes their gills to stop functioning and suffocate. Domestic water piping made with copper, ( dissolving into the water..) is not healthy for shrimp. First off, are you using a Reverse Osmosis filter? Secondly, do you remineralize your RO water using Salty Shrimp GH+ for your bee shrimp? Have you checked your RO filter's water with a TDS pen to see if it's actually purifying the normally hard UK water? Their RO membrane does wear out.
i've got the EXACT same problem - shrimps dying , 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 20nitrates ... but my tank is like a jungle, full of plants ... i've been giving small amount of SHRIMP MINERALS ,, lets see ... try some pothos plants ...

I ended up adding a bit of crushed coral and supplement calcium every once in a while and my colony has bounced back.
That's an interesting point thank! I shall measure them and see :)
@@SimplyShrimps Don't add crushed coral to a PRL tank. No No No. Cherry's fine --- not PRLs
My shrimp were dying fast in 20ppm nitrate. Had to do largish and frequent water changes to get it under control. I've had 1 or 2 deaths in 4 months
I was too scared to do a water change too big.
Nitrates? those sons o' bitches - shrimps don't like nitrates and it is a slow killer.
@@SimplyShrimps I'll send you some down when I get my new stock in, probably be later next week.
Yes and they are all ok. I used to be able to do one water change a month on the old set up. I just need the plants to GROW FAST xD
That's interesting to know thanks! I'll have to look into that.
Hope you will resolve too
Thanks for your help :) yeah hopefully I can get on top of it for the shrimps.
This is my 3rd time trying yellow neocaridinas, they all slowly died. My RCS are doing great & now trying Blue Dreams. Will cross my fingers & say a little prayer for you. 🙏
@@wandaoshiro2014 Thanks :)
My cherries and any type of neo are thriving but the all caradina shrimps I have (shadow pandas, crystal reds/blacks, tangirine tigers, OEBT, pintos, mischling, blue tigers and so on) always die no matter what the last few months.
@@Toasty_88 Oh gee, how's the water temperature for your caradina shrimps? Are your shrimps getting enough calcium? What kind of filter are you using? It's so heartbreaking when the shrimps die, I get so down & I'm sure you do too. Continued prayers for your caradina shrimps.
Ooh wow! I'm sorry for your losses. You definitely can't say you didn't try :(
Floating pants!! Lol 🤣 Great video!!
I’m sorry you’re having this trouble, but thank you! I’ve had this problem for ages! And my shrimp stopped breeding which was not a good sign either. It look me months to work out the issue and I wasn’t able to combat it. I’ve just started a new tank because I didn’t know what else to do. Looking forward to seeing you fix this.
Good luck!! 😀👍🏻🦐
Eek! I think I'm going to restart the tanks :(
😬 bugger 😔
A single pothos plant would sort that nitrate out very quickly. Available at any garden centre. Although plenty of people keep shrimp fine in 20ppm. Depends what they are used to i guess tho.
100% agree
Pothos don’t do anything in my tanks.
@@fisharefriends598 how much old pothos are ??
And do they get lots of light ??
I don't think there is room for it :( Though i'll have a look for one tomorrow.
Did you try this plant?
I have heard about this from more people,
Don't stop this tank maybe you can still save what's left.
Your new plants probably had some kind of pesticides on them and that's what killed them. I try and order tissue cultured plants for my shrimp tank.
@@roan6125 Yeah. It was water pest from asia and appearently those retain pesticides for ages. I bought it at my lfs and said it was for my shrimptank so I trusted the owner without further questions. My current tank is in vitro only. Plants so far brought leeches, hydra, caterpillars, snails and only the lord know what else into my tanks before and I am done with that. Ever since I stopped green algae/fungus on 2 new shrimp were the only issue. Haven't been successful treating that sadly :/
Water changes now, and add plants, you could put plants outside as well with the roots in the water column like pothose. Amquel And some other chemicals will neutralize the high nitrates for now but you still need to take them out with water changes
Thank you! Yes I have bought a pothos today so hopefully I can fit that in some how.
Thanks for sharing. Sorry you lost your shrimp. Hope they have bounced back by now. Can you please tell me where I can find those little cubes you had the moss in?
any tips for starting a cherry shrimp tank with 20 they came in under half an inch so i got them in 2 5gallon grow outs to get a little bigger
I actually just bought some frogbit this weekend to put in my shrimp tank. Sad to hear about you shrimp dying
I wish I had some. Thanks.
Looks like i'll have to do that. We are getting a plant delivery in at work on friday so i'll get first pickings hehe!

It’s not nice in the sense that the shrimp are dying but good that people can learn from it. Thanks 🙏
What about an Amazon sword or java fern to suck them nitrates up aswell as adding more grazing area? If you want to take it out to make it easier for catching the shrimp you could always glue a java fern to a nice stone
I think that they would get a little bit too big for the size of tank it is. But yes most plants are good :D
i just lost a crab, shrimp and few snails. id let my nitrates get to around 35 as a few softy corals like it, I guess it was too much for the invertebrates. I didnt expect that ::(
Simple issue, lack of plants
I would agree looking back at it :(
@Michael Stevenson So what was the problem then?
@Michael Stevenson True like he mentioned earlier i always use floating plants in my shrimp tanks sucks them nitrates up fast
My tank has lots of plants and the floating plants. I can put any shrimp in the tank and they thrive and even reproduce.
@@JeffreyKyleDin Do you use any liquid fertilizers or root tabs in your tank?
Thanks, I tried putting in some polyfilter.
they are shrimp, but like you said it still hurts in that one failed to care for them. 3 of mine died today.
Hi, I don’t have shrimps in my tanks. But I do have a nano 2.5 gallons tank where I have had shrimps before, also a betta fish. But I noticed that my ph would drop to near 6 if I don’t do weekly water change. Maybe that’s another sign
It depends on if you have a buffering substrate. These shrimps actually like the pH to be in the low 6’s.
What brand of test kit do you have?
I was using one by Colombo :)
Bummer, hope you can correct the problem!
Me to Brian 😬😩
I am very sorry this is happening to your shrimp, good luck.
Me too, hopefully I can help them out.
I love my ghost shrimp. However I have noticed that they are not reproducing. The females will get heavy with babies but then POOF they are gone! Could the guppies be eating them? My betta never did years ago. I thought a few guppies would be safe...
Hmm.. Could be. One better vs a few guppies. That's more mouths that might pick off the odd shrimp here and there.
where did u get that tank?
I'll like to remind new viewers that household Pothos works great (or any other type that can have roots submerged in water). Cheap and works great along with aquatic plants (or not) when not heavily planted. Depending how many are added and bio load, zero nitrates is achievable!
our London tap water has 80 nitrates-is that why I am having single shrimp left? haha
It seems to be that way 🙈
In that case you should use osmose water (I hope I'm writing this the right way lol).
They could be reverting back to the wild variations. To keep them breeding blue it’s best to take out any that aren’t blue.
Hmm.. maybe it's something on the plants? Pesticide?
Thank you I was having this exact problem and I’m going to try frogbit
I never ever put shrimp in a tank until I had some fish in the tank for over 3 months. Then I take the fish out check the water add lots of plants lots and then shrimp
Thanks a good way of doing it.
try to put duckweed to remove nitrate
Hope you get it sorted mate!!
Otherwise I'll be 'Simply no Shrimps'.
Hope no more shrimp die mine was doing same so I planted out my tank not lost any since
Same! Fingers crossed when I add more plants that will be the same for me.
Now you just have to wait for it to be converted into nitrates.
sorry for your losses, but yeah recenty got into shrimp but have plenty of live plants, so im not running into problems as yet. but im sure they will come
I thought too maybe it was the fertilizer I added? I swap between Tropica Specialized and NA Thrive
I think it was pesticide on new plants that I added :(
Nitrate/Nitrite levels too high?
Plants, plants and more plants especially plants that get nutrients from the water column like Java fern, subwassertang, Marimo moss etc, floating plants are great for this also.
1st and great vids mate keep it up get them shrimps better
Thanks! Hopefully yes.
What kind of tanks are those?
Custom made tanks that I modified. I did some videos on them 😁
I'm really sorry you're losing shrimp, but I'm glad you uploaded this video.

It can be yes, if you were to use it I’d monitor your tank very closely :)

I did recently by one 😁
Hey, thanks for your help. Yes I use RO water and salty shrimp GH+. The TDS comes out of the filter at less than 5.

I think u need to do one larger water change once a week at least 50%, your tanks look smallish so u need larger water changes. Also add guava leaves and Indian almond leaves and reduce feeding frequency.
