Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I want to add a manufacturer's recommendation from Unicorn Grow Bags. Unicorn states that you should not "Gusset Fold" your bags and instead "Flat Fold" them. The way you folded the top of the bag before sterilization by folding in the gussets in before folding the bag down is considered the gusset fold. Instead you should flatten the opening of the bag with no folds and then fold it down and under the bag.
I can't believe I missed his videos on flat folding. I'm very happy you pointed that out. I will definitely be flat folding going forward with my bags.
@@TearringNable The gusset fold means that your impulse sealer needs seal through 4 layers of plastic, making 2 seals, instead of 1 layer. This increases the risk of blowouts/leaks. You should also adjust your sealer so that you get a good tight seal in one pulse without burning the bag. Doing a second seal in a different spot is definitely a good idea.

I think these days gypsum is considered pointless and bro science. Thank you for suggesting adding coffee grounds to the bag to soak of moisture. I didn't have any but I did toss about quarter cup of brf into each of my two pounds bags
I've seen some people add a little vermiculite as a sort of moisture buffer. It'll help keep any excess water from pooling but will release it to the grain if it's too dry, I guess.
It's not just the larger volume of grains that takes more time. The plastic bags are more insulating than glass is, that is they have a lower thermal conductivity. Even massive mayonnaise jars cook faster than even small bags.

It seems counterintuitive, but 70% is proven to sanitize better than 91% because the water content allows it to sit longer on the cells of the nasties you are trying to kill. I've never seen any data pertaining to how great the difference is though. And the sooner you noc the better, but if you've cooked your bags long enough with a proper hydration level, a few days shouldn't make much difference.

PGT thanks for this amazing video! Quick question - can you seal the grain bags before sterilization since they have a filter? Or is that an issue? I don’t have a flow hood so would like for everything to remain sterile inside. Thank youuuu! 🍄
Fold a flap at the opening of the bag and fold the excess bag around the grain like in the video. The flap will form an easy to open seal while being pressure cooked. Now you don't have to worry about sealing the bags until after you inoculate the grains, unless you're just using a bag clip.
It is absolutely possible to do, but you have to use a 0.5 filter bag and you have to remove ALL of the air from it before you put it in the PC. You also have to put a plate on top of it and make sure it's not touching the walls at all. So basically you can only do one large bag, with maybe 6 pounds of grain per run. You also have to cook it for way longer because bigger bags are thicker and take longer to heat up in the middle. If you seal after the PC you can fit more than twice that much grain in per run. My flow hood is way too small (10"x10") to seal bags with, so I just do it in dirty air. If you use bag clamps it's really easy. The bags come out with the vacuum seal holding the plastic together, so nothing will get in. Heat sealing can be a problem because of moisture, but a clamp will have no problem pushing the moisture out of the way, and you can always heat seal it later when it dries out and remove the clamp.
Philly I dont understand why you then dried your grains? what i do is add the grain and water to my 10T bags and immediately pressure cook follow the humble fungus no soak no simmer TEK. If you are having any contam issues with your bags i suggest increasing PC time to 3 hours min to 3 and half hour max when packing your PC to the max capacity it requires a long cook time to completely sterilize that is what i have found after trial and error after doing that i have very close to 100% success rate and i dont even have a flow hood just a SAB glovebox lol i wish you would get an all american canner mush love sensei!

Hi PGT great video. A quick question, I don’t have a flow hood, would it be advisable to seal the bags before the sterilisation process? The filter should help exchange of air anyways…
Some people say go ahead and seal them, some say they will burst, with .2 micron filter patches being more likely to cause bursting in the PC than .5 micron. Others seal and wrap them up in various things to discourage expansion. Another option is to fold the tops over twice and secure with 2-3 binder clips, which may allow pressure release, if necessary, but will keep the bags closed well enough otherwise. You can then seal the bags without first removing the clips or unfolding, or simply leave the clips in place and skip sealing.
one thing i don''t get, is why not just impulse seal it before doing the sterilisation in the PC? the air should escape through the GE port anyway, right?
Thanks PGT, great stuff as always. Do you usually use LC in you bags or do you also use agar? Your agar videos got me hooked on working with agar but I've not used bags yet and was wondering if there are any tips. Thanks!
Question: what happens if you get as much air out of the bag, seal and pressure sterilise them. Will they explode? I came across a video where he seals then pressure cook them.
If you get enough of the air out I don’t think it would explode but I think that it could still damage the micropore patch. Just seal the bags after pressure cooking they will have a vacuum seal after PC ing anyways
How are you only using 3 quarts of water for a 2.5 hour long pressure cook? I have the same pressure cooker the presto 23 and I need to use just over 4 quarts and I got it rocking right at 15 psi the entire time
I have a question ❓ I bought a grow bag about 10 months ago. It's filled with vermiculite and some kind of dark soil, I'm sorry I just can't remember, but anyway it's already has the injection port and the filter patch, and it's been sealed in plastic wrap. I want to sterilize it again because it's been sitting for 10 months or so. Can I sterilize this bag like in your video since it's already a sealed bag? Thank you for any information, I just want to take the precaution to make sure I'm not wasting 😊!! Thank you sir, sincerely June

Not fast enough tho. The bag would blow up or the GE port would get damaged
I have the same pressure cooker the presto 23 and I need to use just over 4 quarts and I got it rocking right at 15 psi the entire time
where can i but that kind of bags?
where can you get the injection ports?
Is bird seed better to simmer or no simmer for bags?
Yay!!! I’m up early for class!!!
Here’s an apple for the teacher!!🍎😁
Thanks Ohilly
And this guy is awesome so much helpful information
If you're using millet, does it change the prep work for grain bags ?
If I put one two pound bag into shoe box’s how many shoe box’s would I need for one 12 or 6 shoebox. Thanks
How do you add agar Culture to a grain bag? I thought jars were only possible because of the lid. And also your video from agar Culture to grain spawn jars.
Where did you find the white trivet? Smh I can't find one that's weighted. I tried using a metal pan but it caused the vent air to sputter although the steam was sufficient.
Does millet no soak no prep tek effectively kill all endospores ?
What do you recommend jars or bags? I’m trying out making bags myself. 50/50 success with purchasing pre sterile bags. I like jars a little more.
Thanks for all you do.
