Good video. I use rye normally but I am going to try oats. Oats are about half the cost of rye grain. I also actually pressure can my grain in my 30 qt pressure canner and keep the sealed jar on the shelf. I do this so that I have sterile grain for grain to grain expansion or to innoculate a single jar from agar plates. The way to prevent contamination when the vacuum is released is to cover the jar with a few layers of a tight weave cotton cloth that has been saturated with 70% rubbing alcohol and open in a still air box. The canning process allows me to sterilize and seal 14 qts at a time. The sealed jars will stay sterile as long as the seals remain intact.
I just started to get into this hobby a few months ago, the information in your videos has been invaluable to help me get going with this. Just did my first spores, to grain oats to bulk this week, your videos are what got me there thank you so much for doing this for us!
Thanks for easy prep oats! One tip I use for non modified lids is to lay a piece of masking tape across then I have a one piece lid when unscrewing for easier inoculation in sab.
Something that I’ve noticed about mushroom growing is that the equipment is far less expensive to obtain and easier to use than most weed growing equipment which allows mindful and cautious people to become less conspicuous and more discreet.
@@user-pt1kj5uw3bYou get his point though. Its alot less conspicuous buying a $100 pressure cooker and some totes than it is buying a $1,000 grow light and a tent.

Hull-on Oats is the best hands down! Almost no starch or surface food for bacteria. Myc can run into the grain easily. This is how you create a environment that stacks the scales vs contam and pro-mush
Drying oats is much easier using a hanging herb drying rack. Trust me and save yourselves the hassle of drying oats this way. Also a good way to tell if your oats are dry enough is to load half a jar and put the lid onand swirl your oats around. I’m using half pint jars because that’s all that will fit in my tiny pressure cooker. It also only goes to 11.6 psi so I pressure cook them for 4 hours.
I’ve been just using brown rice, but ended up seeing the exact bag you have at tractor supply so I tried it. My jars came out looking a little wet with the oats compared to the brown rice. I’m making a few more tonight and going to let them dry out more to see if that helps out.
I followed this tek and my jars ended up with bacterial contam. A few things I would do differently: Ensure the grains are dry enough! I think I had too much moisture still when I jarred them. Also, I would presoak the grains for about 24 hours in order to allow any endospores that may be able to survive the PC time to germinate before sterilization. Also would probably let cook just a bit longer and make SURE it’s not below 15 psi. I’m pretty sure my PC was at 15 psi the whole time though. Also the contam could have something to do with how close I had my jars next to my air vent and I think they got a little warm and the fluctuations stressed the mycelium and weakened them. All in all, MY mistakes!! PGT you’re the man!! Love your videos!!

Hey PGT fellow veteran mycologist, you should check out popcorn (45-60 minutes hard boil, dry in strainer 15 minutes then PC 90 minutes), I used oats for a long time ;but found a lot of times shaking releases endospores trapped in the grain and/or is prone to bacteria (upping my oat PC time to 2 hours from 90 minutes helped ;but not very much). Thanks again PGT. Did my first whole oat grain spawn run yesterday. The only thing I did different was bring water to boil, turn off burner and leave pot covered on burner, add grain and wait 30 min before drying. Came out perfectly hydrated with 1 busted grain. Pressure cooked for 2.5 hrs because I’ve had some bacillus contamination from 1.5 hr pressure cook times and whole oats can take the longer pressure cook. Hope these oats are better than the millet I have been using. ❤️🙏
I got way too much condensation in mine, even with the tops wrapped in foil. I used popcorn on that run; do you think I didn't let it dry long enough before filling the jars? The moisture let foreign mold grow, so I'm not sure.
Hi, I’m very new to the world of home mycology. I haven’t tried growing anything myself yet but I plan to in the near future. Your videos are AMAZING and honestly way better than any other home mycology channels I’ve found so far. I was just wondering though... when you make grain jars... is there an advantage to using oats vs brown rice? I noticed you used brown rice in one of your other videos. What other grains can you use and what are the advantages/disadvantages to each one?
You can use popcorn, millet, wild bird seed, brown rice, whole oats, and there's probably more. Popcorn is good because it's less prone to contamination, millet is good because it has more inoculation points, same with wild bird seed cuz thats where millet comes from basically. Brown rice is easy to obtain/make although kind of expensive, whole oats is dirt cheap and highly nutritious for mycelium.
Love your videos! Just noticed you don't use any polyfill and punch a hole in the lid.... Do you keep the grain jar lids loose for air exchange? Never seen that done before but love the idea. Much quicker to set up... Thanks for your response!
Yeah I used an unmodified method in the video by flipping the lid and leaving the ring of the lid a quarter turn loose for exchange. There are a few videos that show the unmodified method for lids on the channel! 🙏
Hey really appreciate your videos! I'm about to start tomorrow and was curious you had alot of jars. How big of a tub are these going in once you mix it. Im going to be working with a 66 qt bin and im not to sure about the ratio for jars/bins.
if you need to wait to inoc the jars after pressure cooking, can you put them in the fridge or something for a few days before doing so? how long can you wait
Honestly don't even bother with refrigerating them, if they're sterile they're sterile. I used grains after months of setting on the shelf. As long as you agar is clean and your technique is sterile they'll colonize fine. If you put them in the fridge you're just slowing any bacteria or mold from forming. Leaving them at room temp will save you a headache and wasted spawn. I also do g2g after agar. I just throw out jars that constamed before I add my spawn/myc. Hope that helps, good luck!

No hydration before you boil it? Like you do with popcorn tek
Hello from Bonnie Scotland did you soak thesegrains for 24 hours before you started the 15 min boil then dry out to then fill jars to sterilise for 90mins Thankyou
