    this compact looks great! those M3 front bumpers make the front end look so much better. loved the video, even if you did call my car boring, haha

      Lol I did say from a project car perspective :) because it's pretty much stock. I would love to see if some slightly meaner cams would wake up that engine a bit. But all in all a really impressive car.

      It's the most fun you can get for a boring car. 😉 It's so boring I have about 3 or so people per month ask me if I want to sell it and a few comments a week saying nice car car bruh! or something along those lines. I have a $70K truck that gets less compliments and never once has someone asked to buy it.

    Favorite BMW I have ever owned. Fast four cylinder. Good on gas perfect.

      Every thing is made out of shit, but it sounds good without the annoying tubes that make it quiet, and take up a lot of space. Overall decent car 😃

      @allaboutroofing2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Foxxninja what are you comparing to that a 318ti is made of shit? I think they aren't perfect but above average. Mine is 25 years old and looks like new on the inside minus a worn bolster on the driver's seat. Mechanically it's the most reliable sporty car I've had. My shift knob broke and the wind regulators suck, but hey nothing is perfect.

    The compacts have sort of become cool in the last few years. If we go back 15-20 years ago, people in the E36 or just BMW community HATED these. Mostly cause you would drive past someone and see "Ohh, and E36" and then you'd pass them and see that amputated rear end and go "Ewww". They also have weak engines except for the straight six version, which is pretty rare.

    I have a '98 318ti and the best aspect is the confidence in handling. Great feedback from the steering wheel.

    • @allaboutroofing2
      @allaboutroofing2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I concur. Also versatility. Not many small cars you can haul a regular sized washer or dryer in it and shut the hatch. I've won a few bets about if something will fit or not.

      I also have the silver 1998 318ti automatic with 68,500 original miles. It needs some minor interior cosmetic job but I still drive it everyday with no major problems so far.

    • @allaboutroofing2

      @@scooterbob4432 what's the power like on a automatic? Mileage? I partial to the manual, but curious how it does otherwise.

    • @scooterbob4432

      @@allaboutroofing2 The 4 cylinder engine is 1.9 liters with 140 horsepower. With the automatic transmission, acceleration is slow until 3,000 rpm. Buy the manual instead of the automatic if available in your location.

    One my favorite cars I had. Silver, perfect leather seats, HIDs, excellent. Then the power windows failed repeatedly on both sides and the door panel clips are such a fucking pain omg. Bought bulk from some guy who makes them cause you have to buy the entire door panel. The black trim coming loose was frequent too. Took the best care I possibly could and sold it when it hit around 170k miles and started knocking. Thing nickel and dimed me to death.

    I had a similar view of the BMW, and it's drivers and then I was talked into a deal on one. I've owned American and Japanese cars and driven many others. BMWs are a different beast. They are quiet when you want them to be, but they make their distinct engine sounds when you push them. They inspire confidence in acceleration, breaking and handling, but are comfortable and ergonomic enough for getting groceries or long road trips. The maintenance can be finicky, but they aren't impossible to work on and there's an overall sense that it was all engineered to work well. Dang, I sound like a BMW commercial.

    • @allaboutroofing2
      @allaboutroofing2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    First video I checked out on your channel. Got my thumbs up for sure. You and I have the same perception of German automobiles. However, the 318ti has my interest because it's the exception... Compared to other 3 series people say the snubby back makes it look less appealing. To me, it simply doesn't look quite as pretentious as other bimmers. Thanks for the review. I hope to see more

    Any stock M42 & M44 Engine got a racing exaust manifold :) (not those crapy show things where any pipe got a different lenght like the stock ones) that's why the throttle response is so good, and why they rev so fast.
    The M42 & M44 in the E36 use the BMW Disa System. There are basically 2 different intake manifolds. One small for low revs, and one big for high revs.
    That's why the engine puls from 1500-2700 very fast and then again from 4300 to 5500

    I have had a few of these, I love this car for so many reasons. Among them, are the utility, and the simplicity of the car to use and work on. Most of all this car is SO MUCH FUN TO DRIVE!

      driving 4 answers yea those E46 are still holding value. Not sure if you ever played Need For Speed.
      One of the most iconic game car was the E46 M3 but it wasnt any normal M3 but a race spec M3 called the M3 GTR. It was the hero car in Need For Speed Most Wanted.
      Another youtuber is slowly building up his M3 to look like the game car.

    Car doesnt seem to have stock exhaust and im surprised you said that you cant hear the engine much in the cabin.. Maybe we dont compare it to the same standard but imo you really feel the engine in 318ti. I would call it quiet up to 80km/h, it starts to be louder towards 110kmh, but above that you really hear its revving

    I love your videos and also have a project AW11 with a 20v blacktop 4age. I have also been picking up one of these 318ti BMWs as a second project car since it's relatively easy to drop any BMW 6 into including the twin turbo modern ones, so maybe as a project car the 318 is not so boring.

    • @d4a
      @d4a  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't say the car was boring as a project car. I said the car is boring from a project car perspective in the state it's in right now, as it's pretty much stock :) Every car can be a fun project car. This is a really good car, and with the right mods it can be outstanding.

      For filming inside the car I use a Delkin devices suction cup mount with two suction cups and my Nikon d3300 or my gopro for longer sequences without talking. Audio is just a Olympus lapel mic, costs 15$ on eBay. I also use a Rode videomicro mic sometimes.

      The rear bumper as shown was available in all cars with the M-package optioned.
      The front bumper without the painted bars in the cantral grille segment and added black matte lip was only available on M3s.
      Another front bumper wich looked very similar was provided with the M-package option for lower end models.
      The side skirts as shown are the standart option, altough the german exclusive 323ti SLE (Sport Limited Edition) recieved M3 Side skirts which look a bit more fancy.
      The mirrors are M-GmbH exclusive. they were only available on the M3 models or in the top of the line 323ti SLE.
      Normally they would be a square design.
      The Seats are 100% M3 exclusive, i think the earliest models of the e36 m3 didn't even have those. They're called "vader" seats in the community.
      The steering wheel was offered in the earliest of early M3s (and all other e36s i think) and soon was replaced by a much sportier 3-spoke design which was also available in all models with the M-Package ordered.
      The shift knob i think was not a factory option back then, but it is a very nice shift knob wich was introduced in the late 1990s early 2000s and is still available in the most modern of modern bmws with manual gearboxes.
      The 323ti SLE seems to be the one everyone wants to imitate. It's got the M3 exterieur, there's some exclusivity as the name suggests, it's got a beefy 2,5L inline-6 wich is indestructable (mines on over 300.000km without hiccups as of now), sounds amazing and is easily modified to bring 190-200hp to the table (intake manifold swap 250€).
      get them while there hot, prices for good ones are exploding lately.
