This is What Most Hunters Get Wrong About Deer Hunting - Deer & Deer Hunting TV, Full Episode

  • www.deeranddeer... Too many hunters do the same thing year in and year out, hoping something different will happen. If you’re not willing to change, your chances of success probably won’t, either. Learn how to break out of your rut in this full episode of Deer & Deer Hunting TV.
A major cause of this repetition is the idea that hunting harder (putting in longer hours on the stand, developing more plots, scouting deeper into the woods, etc.) will up the odds of filling that tag. If that sounds exhausting, you’re not alone. With time, money and opportunity already tight, some hunters would rather fall back into familiar routines.
However, hunting harder isn’t the key to success. Hunting smarter is the way to go. Everyone gets the same 24 hours in a day. Do you think the world’s most accomplished hunters - or perhaps just the ones in your deer camp - can get it done any other way?
But what does it mean to hunt smarter? Join the Deer & Deer Hunting TV crew for the answer.

Another great video with great information. Gotta love the comment section though, its what i expect to see haha. I was raised a rifle hunter in PA, we only have about 2 weeks to get something done, along with a million other Hunters. I picked up a bow to extend my season. I only had the thought process of gun hunter to bring into my first season. Go here, sit alllll day. Over the years i read up on alot of different articles, watched videos like this, talked to other hunters, and learned from the habitat and deer themselves. I am a completely different deer hunter now then I was 4-5 years ago. I am always learning and will continue too. Too many folks get stuck in there ways. This year was my biggest change, and hardest. Keeping my butt out of the woods even though i could have gotten out. It was sooo hot and still is warm into late October now. I decided to start playing the weather and stop "hunting harder" or spending every minute i had in the deer woods...it paid off! I hunted opening morning, then didnt go out again til almost 2 weeks later. Had our first, real fall cold front move in that broke the back of days of 80-90 degree temps. picked the wind for the stand on a breezy afternoon where the temps had dropped 30 degrees. This was also the first time i would hunt this stand. 2 hours later on 9/28, I had my hands on a beautiful 8 pointer. It was also one week to the day of my Son's birth! You get out what you put in!

Great video for someone who can dedicate a huge amount of their time to watching their areas deer activity. My fulltime workin, married and on an extreme tight budget. Need a video for the deer hunters that get about a very small amount of time to scout before prime time. I'm talking 3 opportunities tops. For 40 acres how many trail cams do you need?

    • @kevinwoodrum2222
      @kevinwoodrum2222 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I know im 2 years late but I have 38 acres and I only run 3. Just find some natural trails "you can definitely tell what's being used" follow them and see where they open up too. Slap one on a tree viewing where that trail comes out and do the same on other trails. But I will say Cell cameras save your ass more times than not especially if you have to get into or close to those trails to relieve SD cards every month.

Some good information here. I've just turned 50 and made a conscious decision to hunt smarter instead of harder. I started putting myself in areas where the deer were basically funneled through choke points in the woods, near creeks, streams etc. The first season I really tried hunting like this I killed more deer than I ever have and the shots were close range, by the time most of the deer came into shooting range they were basically on top of me which made for easier, cleaner kill shots.

Hey Benjamin, I usually hunt with a muzzle loader, 50cal and a 75lb recurve bow. My best days have always been early mornings(8am-10am} during a light drizzle and or light snow falling and no wind. I usually walk slow and stop every 50' or so and wait for about a minute and then move along. I walk on trials or I take a compass bearing and off I go. I have jumped many deer and I've come across many that are just standing there not moving, looking at me, sometimes they stomp the ground.....I have lived and hunted in 5 provinces in Canada (military). So far my posting to NB was the best for deer hunting. I prefer to ,what I call actually hunt deer, I hate sitting around. Many times if a doe crosses my path I just wait as usually there will be a buck coming along and as you may know they are really stupid during the rut, best of luck...

    • @jedidiah5131
      @jedidiah5131 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My first recurve was I think 35 or 40 when I was a teenager, my next bow,I had started a with an 80lb compound bow / silly me lol( that's all the store had in my draw length)....Ican't remember the bottom end weight, I just left it at 80 as I was going to use it for moose/elk hunting and I could only pull that 3x without killing myself and wasn't very accurate/I tried pulling it from a sitting position, no way.... (I'm a big man, 6' 3 230lbs) target practice was not fun at first... After a few weeks to a month though it became relatively easy. I figured I would go heavy with my recurve also so I could get a little more distance as I was finding it hard to get within 30-40 yrds for deer, elk or moose. I have never hunted from a stand....I think 50 is perfect for deer.

I also don't use a bunch of expensive equipment, I carry an old Remington ADL 270. a backpack with some food and drink, knife, hand and body warmers, warm boots and a sleeping bag. I find a good spot where deer are using and sit there all day and let those small bucks go and only shoot bigger mature bucks. Plus i hunt public land in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia so I walk a long way so there's no point in getting to my hunting spot and leaving to go get lunch. I don't use an ATV or 4 wheeler because wild deer know that sound and the smell of burnt gas and stay away from it, all my friends that are lazy and use a 4 wheeler don't get big bucks like me because deer aren't dumb they know that sound and you can't cover up the smell of burnt gas it sticks to you even if you walk away from the 4 wheeler. Yes you gotta hunt smarter but hunt smarter for the area you hunt and everywhere is different and no you don't need a bunch of expensive equipment because just having the basic equipment like gun, bow, boot, clothing and hunting license is expensive enough.

Hi, thanks for watching. No ... you can't just go by "no trespassing" signs. Best bet is to go to your local bank or courthouse and get a plat book. In many states, simply not knowing where the property lines is not an excuse for trespassing. If you are not sure of the lines, don't guess. It's better to be safe than sorry. It is fairly easy to learn where the lines are, and there are even apps that can help you (like Onyx Mapping, etc). Good luck out there! - Dan Schmidt

There's an awful amount of complaining in the comments. If it's so tough shooting deer on public property, it's probably time for you all to put down your weapons and take up tennis. A lot of people complaining about how hard it is for you to shoot a buck on state property. I'm from Michigan. The highest pressured state in the country. Do you all want me to make a video for you? Rule #1, if you can see 80-100 yards through the woods you're in the wrong spot. Pressured deer are hiding in the thick stuff. 2) If you detect human presence, move deeper into the woods. Pressured deer will not tolerate living amongst predators.

probablyaduck And does it show the deer die immediately and lay still, or continue to kick? I missed that part. A spine shot is usually a quick kill shot. Remember, a lung shot can take minutes to dead a deer. A spine shot- seconds. And vice versa. Show me some footage of your kills, and I'll be better able to warrant your experience in these matters. Other than sounding Libtarded.

That’s actually not high at all, that’s a perfect shot. Shooting from up high, like 20 feet up the tree, you need to aim high. The arrow when penetrating into the inside, it goes lower and lower and touches both lungs.

I just watched a DDH episode where one of the hosts proclaimed that mature bucks don't eat for days during the rut. My 40 years of hunting deer in Missouri do not bear that out. I have taken many big mature bucks during the rut and they always have foodstuff (browse, corn, soybeans, wheat) in their stomach. I would certainly agree that feeding is secondary to finding does for them, but to say they don't eat anything for days is BS.

    Fun video
But some info is opinion not plainly correct/fact.
    Example,
They claimed that if you sit in the morning and see nothing the right thing to do is move.
My experience is if it's a first day ever sit in a stand sit all day.
I have shot many deer in the afternoon on all day sits that I saw nothing in the morning.
It could be a afternoon spot.
When you move you won't know what would have happened if you stayed.
My opinion is if you jump deer on your way to your stand in the morning and see nothing then maybe moving is a good option.
    Try that spot another afternoon.

    • @oldgoat1890
      @oldgoat1890 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. I have repeatedly shot deer at certain spots in the afternoon and never caught sight of a deer there in the morning. I would rather walk around with a rifle until about 11:00 and then sit. It is a lot easier to spot a deer that is up and moving in rough mountainous areas. Once they are bedded it is really tough to spot them first. I have done really well doing this on public land about three days after rifle opens up.

    Nice shot Gordy.
Would have liked to see where the arrow hit as it’s pretty rare to drop a big buck like a rock with an arrow.
I’ve been hunting 30 years and I’ve never dropped one like a stone except when I hit the spine yet I almost always had to take a follow up shot.
Yeah the intense music is annoying as hell....Od rather hear the natural sounds of the event instead of making a big production of it like a Disney movie......we’re deer hunters, not 7 year olds.
As far as working jobs and not having places to hunt there’s nothing stopping people from hunting public land or getting permission to hunt private tracts.
Man I’m not afraid to ask someone with a nice property if they’d mind if I hunt there.
Some people say no but you’d be surprised how many people will say “kill them all because they eat my shrubs and whatnot.”
I have about ten private properties to choose from all because I’m not afraid to ask people I know that have property.
Offer to do some work around their place in exhange......get a buddy to help or bring your kids so they’re not playing video games and yapping mindlessly on facebook.

Yes, I pee in the woods as well. Ive even had bucks walk up to and area where I urinated as a test, out in view of my stand......he walked right up to it to smell. Now, I have no doubt that areas where human activity is non-existent, things are totally different.
As for cover scents.....I have found PURE Vanilla extract to be the best thing ever. Ive had bucks track me down before I can get my muzzle loader ready.....deer at a full run hit the brakes and wander around to figure out what that wonderful smell is.

Your opening monologue is incorrect. The definition of
insanity is expecting different results not the same as stated. Lots of
comments regarding the need for safety gear. Safety gear is good. In most cases
nowadays, I feel it is more important than ever because the lack of common
sense in most people makes it almost a dire necessity. However, I thoroughly believe
e a person has the right to do as they see fit (within the law); the mentality
of wrapping everyone in bubble-wrap to prevent injury is stupid to those of us
who have a modicum of common sense & have been raised to manage risk
accordingly. Keep up the good work.

    • @oldgoat1890

Experimenting implies that you are changing things. The “phrase/old
saying” regarding stupidity/insanity is doing the same & expecting
different results. There’s nothing wrong with experimenting it’s the foundation
for discovering innovations. However, doing the same things again & again
expecting different results is neither productive nor intelligent.

    • @oldgoat1890
