Very nice. I love to see how traditional bass like walking influences synth and then synth stuff moves forward again and influences live traditional bass with synth pedals and then back again.
I'm always grateful if a fast part is played slowly in plain view ie. Into the groove. I've never tried that one before. Another great subject and video.
Thank Mr Kraft I am good at my 3 note Techno Bass lines with my 909 for 90's tracks , but got stuck on my 80's synth pop always loved all of those bands 🎉The Pet Shop Boys are so underrated 🎉 I thought I heard some Propganda in there
Inspirational video Espen, cant wait to implement more of these styles and variations in my basslines after watching this.. greatly appreciate all your work, salute from Canada!
I remember the challenges of going from playing the bass lines on a bass guitar to the synth. It took me a while but the music inspiration helped. Your "Kraft"smanship makes me envious. Years of dedication, no doubt.
I like inspiration from bass guitar lines for synth bass lines. Single and multiple triggering and legato glide make for some great slap and fretless variations.
beautiful! so inspiring.. especially that "single note trick", I didn't realize it was "allowed" to play anything outside the chord, but then I remember hearing that same thing on PSB's Love Comes Quickly and it sure was effective in that track! I think it's the idea of not being afraid to do things wrong and experiment that's so liberating..
I would consider myself to be pretty good at synth basslines and I think the important thing is having a DEEP understanding of basslines other than synth. The best tip I can give is to try to understand basslines in a lot of different genres and then translate it over. Or just get to a point where you can play disco and funk basslines 😂... If you can do those then you can do anything
Love this. Don't know why, but it is in my nature to track the bassline first on any track I listen to for the first couple of times. Then the chord progression. Perhaps I should've learnt bass guitar instead of synths.
Hey thanks! I suck at music and usually play more with patches and sound. However I sat in the sun and was able to recreate almost all patterns on my Po 33 sampler!
Fascinating! I’m going to try some of these later. I liked that you mentioned Pet Shop Boys at the top of the video. I’m reminded of someone that said that a musical cue from Inspector Gadget, “Penny’s Theme” or “Look Out” sounded an awful lot like “Domino Dancing”. I listened to them back to back and saw their point. Of course, for “Penny’s Theme”, I could only get that sound by using a Jupiter 8 bass type patch with a little overdrive and a tremolo. Seems to work. The stabs on the upbeats gives it a bounciness to it. That cue happens when Penny and Brain solve the case. I enjoy videos like this. Keep up the good stuff. 👍👍
Nice video, Into the groove is one of my favorite bass lines ever, as well as Nights on broadway. Other simple but great ones are Like a virgin (the story behind it is great as well), Take my breath away, Somebody's watching me, Billy Jean... In fact, there are many cool bass lines 🙂
That was awesome!, bass lines is probably what I have most trouble with really great tips here! Thanks 🙏 ( .....aside from that big thanks for into the groove ...as it’s one of my favourite synth bass lines of all time, anytime it makes an appearance it makes me very happy man 😅)
Thx for this tutorial! This is usally nothin for me, but I have now checked my compositions and, yes there are some weak parts in my bass playing. So I will have now the idea to improve it again for the future Thx a lot!!!!
When you highlight the bass line like that, I'm suddenly realizing how many of those things translate to the 90s as well. Especially that octave bass at the end. Why re-invent the wheel, I suppose?
Hi Espen Kraft, thanks for this insightful video. I would much prefer synth heads make more videos like this about how to play the keyboards rather than the endless vintage synth reviews. Guitarists have so much content on how to actually play the dang thing but there's barely anything like that for us keyboard players. I would love more videos about melodies scales chords, chord progressions etc. Thanks
Many thanks! I hope to do much more like this in the near future. I'm tired of "gear worship videos" myself and I want to focus more on the creative side on the channel moving forward. Cheers
Thanks! I layer and make my own drums, from samples I make of old drum machines. I have all the necessary samples (to make this) in my sample pack "The Ultimate Italo Disco / Synth-Pop Sample Pack".
Very nice. I love to see how traditional bass like walking influences synth and then synth stuff moves forward again and influences live traditional bass with synth pedals and then back again.
Thanks for making this. I didn't realize how much I like octave basslines until one jumped out at me by contrast.
The bass line in Into The Groove is awesome. 5:56 very New Order
Love videos like this. More!
So much 80s goodness here. Great video demo Espen :)
Making it all sound so easy...a good teacher
You truly are the 80's Mr Kraft.
I'm always grateful if a fast part is played slowly in plain view ie. Into the groove. I've never tried that one before.
Another great subject and video.
Octave bass is how that rising tension is achieved in "Docking" tune of Interstellar in fact.
One of your most helpful videos. So good I watched twice. Thanks 👍

I use your video tutorials on songwriting. very useful class. I try to write italo disco.
Great masterclass Espen! btw I hadn't realised how similar the bassline from Broken Wings is to "The Human League - Don't You Want Me". cheers!
Mr.Mister took inspiration from the League. ;-)
One reason I like your videos so much it they always give me great ideas and send me running up to my 80s attic to play some music. Thanks as always
Awesome!
These beats are so smooth, they're perfect for chillin' and relaxing 🍹😎♥☺Love
The first piece of music that enters my mind regarding the pedaling technique is the intro to “You Belong to the City”.
Superb tutorial Mr. Kraft! Great funky 80s style baselines.
Thanks for slowing down that Madonna baseline - love your videos, please keep them coming! 😸

Fantastic ideas! Thanks for sparking creativity during a dry spell!
Those are great examples. I would recommend using the walking bass in Billie Jean, one of the best riffs ever for bass.
Sounds like I'm walking back into a night club back in the day. Of every thing you have done this for me captures the sound of the 80s. ❤️

Thanks! I have many videos showing that.

In Industrial the tradition is to do what James Brown had Bootsie Collins do
Love it! Great tutorial. Simple but effective.
Tutorial? I still have no idea how to create these bass sounds....
@@robertsteinberger5667 Bass lines, not bass sounds. This tutorial shows, note by note, how to play lots of killer bass lines. Great tutorial! 🌞
Love this. Don't know why, but it is in my nature to track the bassline first on any track I listen to for the first couple of times. Then the chord progression. Perhaps I should've learnt bass guitar instead of synths.
Awesome! Thank you for dissecting this. The 80s synth music still sounds real nice, and I also like it because of nostalgic feelings.
I'm Forever Blue Swing Out Sister isn't more well known. Excellent tutorial.
Simple, but effective. Thanks for that tutorial!
Interesting to see how "simple" but effective it is with those bass lines!
i simply think the people who made those basslines are geniuses
Awesome tutorial. Thanks for that!
Awesome lesson Espen! Thank you! I’m bored playing Piano, I’m off to dig my Synth out of the loft right now. You inspire us Espen
Thanks!

Sweet!
Love that bass sound, I particularly like the static bass with the chords making the changes. Inspiring.😊
As I watch this I still don’t understand why The Pet Shop Boys haven’t contacted you to produce their next album “redux”.
Because The Pet Shop Boys are thr role model of Espen, not vice versa. 😄
@@marcom.
I find your little fanciful fable very hard to believe my friend
I doubt they'd be interested in working old school again. ;-)
@@EspenKraft you could send them a remix of one of their newer songs. You never know what might happen 🤔
I'd never do that. Not my way of operating.
great video, love this sort of thing

Cool observation. I'm going to have to bust out Inspector Gadget again just to listen for that.
Famous basslines... we need more content like this pt2. I like some of early Madonna's ones. "Who's that girl" is another one.
Thank you for your work Espen !
totally 120% awesome! thanks 4 making these info-torials 😎🎹🎹🎹

Short, to the point, and easy to apply. And inspiring! This is a perfect tutorial.
Awesome!
Thank you, great tutorial.
Thank you for this incredibly valuable info🙏. I’ve always wanted to understand the bass line to Get into the Groove.

Awesome video Epsen! Very interesting to see you break down each bass line. I'm excited to experiment with some of these ideas.
Definitely interesting. I'm not brilliant at writing basslines, but I enjoy trying. If in doubt, I just keep it simple and unremarkable.
That was ace , get into the groove is a handful
Great. Awesome tips.
Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks for the Great lesson!
Love it :) I'm always inspired to jam after watching your music vids ;)

Thanks! I have several videos planned.
@@EspenKraft Can`t wait ;)
Great old tunes!
Are you applying some kind of video-based quantization? Unbelievable timing. More of the synth bass videos pls.
great stuff Espen, sköl!
Super useful video, thank you!
Good job!
Thanks, good tips here.
One of my favourite synth bass lines is to be found in the long version of Propaganda's "Dr. Mabuse" after 7 minutes.
great video!!!
Cheers!
Great Video man! I will def take this Video into consideration for my nect track
Fantastic !!!
Like in the 80ties......

Hey - lets make an epizode about spacesynth ala Laserdance , KOTO, Syntech.... There you'll find GREAT basses ;)
Gonna use these for sure! ADN now you inspired me to dig for Baselines :)
instructive video good examples of simplicity of playing bass:) good video:)
Great stuff, thank you Espen.
Hey Espen,I enjoy your clips. I hope budding musicians get some knowledge from you.
Sweet, thanx!

Great! Thank you 🙏
Thx !!!
great video

Hi Espen. Are you connected by midi to the original hardware synths that produced these sounds or is this a soft synth setup? Thanks!
Prophet X used as a master keyboard. Drum are from the Isla S2400 and the rest is my TAL sampler libraries of hardware synths yes.
@@EspenKraft 🙏🏽 thanks.
