  • The N2 National Road between George and Knysna in the South Africa Garden Route is a pretty scenic one. But if you want really spectacular scenery with mountain passes, historic bridges, dairy farms, mountains, and scenery that wouldn't be out of place in parts of Europe, this is for you. It's around 20 Km longer than the N2 National Road, and has several gravel stretches, but it's totally doable with an ordinary sedan car, a #4x4 isn't a necessity. There are some really good restaurants and tea rooms along the way and did I mention the scenery?

    Its an amazing bit of history that winds its way through so many passes you lose count. It is quite an adventure especially for the uninitiated as the vistas are surprisingly unspoilt & beautiful. The cliffs & forest are beautiful & the small holdings are reminiscent of Switzerland/Europe as the drive progresses. The road conditions vary from quite wide to very narrow & change constantly. The surface is pretty rough, corrugated, potholes & with run-off ruts that get 12/15 inches deep. In the entire trip you may pass a dozen vehicles. There is a lot of loose gravel & rock. I have seen normal cars on worse roads but you won't be doing a car any favours. Its not a 4x4 track but its probably a lot better to do it in something made for those conditions. There are many, many blind corners. If you not seriously careful & drive blindly round corners you will get into trouble. If your LHS passengers don't like heights...you will have a lot of squealing😄 Its a 2 hour trek & if doing it from Inland you come out at the Keurbooms River mouth area. If you in a rush don't do it! If you want to explore & are prepared for some fun - do it.

      Thanks so much for that detailed insight Stuart. You've inspired me to do the drive again.

    Is this pass accessible with a normal car? (Ford fiesta)

      Hi Claudia, our visit was close to a year ago now, and at that time yes, it was certainly accessible with a normal car. A lot of the road is tarred, and the gravel bits, apart from some isolated areas, are in good condition. Where it's a bit corrugated just take it slow and you will be fine. I'm not sure if heavy rain would cause some muddy patches, that you would need to be aware of. Otherwise you are totally able to do it in a Fiesta.

      Thanks for the feedback Tony, it was one of my very early creations, I've learnt a lot since this one was made, I think you'll find my later videos will be easier on the ear 😂

    Do you need a 4x4 for this?

    • @Kangela
      @Kangela  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andries, you can do it in a normal car. After a lot of rain the road can be a bit corrugated, but it's still totally doable, and a LOT of the route is actually tar.

    The video is disappointing for someone knowing the route and the area. Facts are not all correct. It is called the seven passes road but very few passes are shown. Also about the history. How many people are aware or know, that the Garden Route originally was limited to this road and that the ame is derived from the many tea gardens serving travellers by horse cart along the route that had to rest ad change horses?
    The info on the Karatara settlement is incorrect.
    The sequence is incorrect. Homtini Pass before Karatara instead of the other way around.

      Thanks for the feedback, it was one of my first videos posted on this channel, so wasn't necessarily my very finest, I do hope you will forgive me. I certainly appreciate the additional information you've provided, as I'm sure will other viewers, I wasn't aware of much of it.
