  • Late summer, early fall is such a good time to learn how to raise chickens and start your backyard chicken coop. The days are long so you have more hours outside to spend learning how to raise baby chicks. It is also a great time to get things ready for the coming winter.
Check out the Chick Days website for more: TractorSupply....
Buy live Chickens, Ducks, & Turkeys year round: TractorSupply....
Setting up a tub for little baby chicks is a great project for the kids, who are off for the summer. Kids thrive with outside activities. I personally think kids and chickens are a good match. Chickens are a great pet for kids and they live outside so no mess indoors for mama to clean up. When supervised, even quite young kids can care for and enjoy chickens. It is just a great family project.
My advice is to start off small, four chickens is a good number until you get the hang of things. Second is make sure you have a very big coop. The bigger the better and the less problems you will have down the road. It is well worth the investment of money and time to build a big sturdy coop. Learning what your chickens need to eat to be happy and healthy is simple and easy.
I have made lots of videos to help you with every aspect of raising chickens.
With some time and research spent building the coop and learning what to feed, every family can enjoy a back yard coop and have years of fun plus healthy fresh eggs.

My oldest grandson, who is nine, loves to look for eggs. He helps me to clean the coop too. It does take him from the electronics for a few minutes. He had named a chicken, as did his little brother. The oldest grandson’s chicken got egg bound. Because I didn’t know what to do about that, I gave her to a friend. The friend got the egg out and the chicken still lives. My oldest grandson got to name another chicken to claim as his own. He likes to say that my husband and I are farmers because we have chickens. LOL.

westmeathguy that's so sucky. Sounds like poor management and creepy men in charge tbh. The Tractor Supply near me is pretty much full of adults, men and women, but they usually know what they are talking about and try their best with advice, avoiding to give wrong information. I go there for supplies if i cant find it at my closer country supply stores, but I personally don't like tractor supply chicks, I've noticed when they are adults they randomly die and have extreme temperament issues, I haven't had any issues with that since I have hatched and raised chickens I know aren't inbred.

Don't hang your heat lamp over your waterer. It will heat up the water and they won't want to eat it. I suggest hanging the heat lamp on one of the sides of their chick house and put the food and water on the other side so that they have a side where they can warm up and a side where they can cool down.

By coincidence, I went to TSC today 9/15. They had about 5 or 6 varieties of chicks. They looked very clean and very healthy. However a little child had a large horn and he was banging it on their tub and honking it. The chicks looked lovely, dry and happy and active. I saw a small bag of mealworm for 10.99 and a larger 18.99 bag. Personally I purchased $3.99 saddle soap for my leather. My guess is Becky's cart of chicken supplies and babies were 'free' for her. I think she raises healthy animals and cares for them wonderfully. Some viewers may be jealous of a sponsorship opportunity. It is what it is, more education about what that store has to offer. My Walmart eggs today were $.55/dozen for large, it's a loss leader for them. Cheaper, yes. Healthier? And WITHOUT the Joy of Growing my own. I know 100% those Wmart hens were tortured in their deprived lives before laying my eggs for me. TX Becky for all Your Care, it was Beautiful. And, BTW, this channel is NOT a fashion channel, chickens don't care what your pants look like ~ Be nice.

Becky, thank you so much for this video. I was contemplating getting chicks last spring, but decided against it. Now am thinking of getting them again, but I really need to go to tractor supply and talk with them about starting a coop with babies. It gets very cold here in Kentucky in the winter and am afraid they will get sick. I have a great veterianarian here in my town and I know she would help me with them if they became sick, but thinking of waiting again til spring. Again, thank you for all your encouragement of living a sustainable life. You are wonderful.

I wouldn't trust workers of a store to give you beneficial and correct info. Do your own research!(: go for a hardy breed. I live in new York and we get cold, harsh weather and our chickens are fine. I have a 9x12 coop. 4x4 was made into a quail coop and they have their own little run. But the rest of the space belongs to my chickens, ducks, and my guard goose(which I seriously would recommend). And I have an 8x8 run. I would say the space I have is best for 3 hens, a rooster, 3 ducks, and a goose. Currently I have 8 chickens but all the roosters except are being butchered, and I have someone who will take the ectra hens

A lot of TSC hate on this post, geeze. Where I live there are 3 feed stores in my localish area and none of them carry organic feed. I go to Tractor Supply for that. I order my meal worms on Amazon, though, $30 for a big ol' 5 pounds bag. Most everything else I get at TSC. I typically get my birds from Cackle, but last fall Chick Days at TSC I picked up 7 California Whites and 1 Easter Egger. One of the Cali's had failure to thrive and didn't make it, but everyone else did great. The Cali Whites even started laying around Christmas time and laid consistently through winter. She's not saying you have to get everything at TSC, she's showing you what you can get --and that you can get everything you need. People need to relax. Go outside and play with your chickens for a while and chill.

Hmmm . . . I was told if you are feeding crumbles, chicks do not need grit. It is just an extra. The water they drink breaks down the food. In the years I have had chickens from chicks, I have never given them grit. Never had a problem either!

Becky or anyone that knows about chickens: I was able to save a baby black bantam chick last February from cats as the hen brought this tiny baby chick to my side of the fence and I caught it before the cats did. Well so the baby chick would not be alone (I didn't trust it's mother) I bought 2 tiny Americarana chicks so the baby would not be alone. I got lucky as the store bought chicks turned out to be hens!
Anyway now that the hens are 6 months old and laying eggs the beautiful little rooster (and I mean exceptionally beautiful)
little rooster was on top of one hen mating it!
The little Rooster is very protective of the hens even when he was tiny! What now? Should I allow the rooster to live free on my little farm where the rooster will have a lot of roaming room, bamboo, large trees, grass? Or should I make a coop for the rooster? Leave it with the hens? The beautiful rooster is crazy about his hens. Any advice?
