  • The weather may have gone from one extreme to the other this week but that won’t slow us down. The figs are going for it this year and the garden is producing lots of goodies.
    Enjoy!

Carlos, when will you start driving as well? I know the roads in Portugal are scary and narrow 😱

The river beach water looked cold. All that fruit must have made some good jam. Have you tasted it yet? Noodles was cute looking out the window looking at the storm.

Courgettes: need a lot of water, you can trim the lower leaves for airflow and to give room to the other plants growing nearby, I find helping the flowers pollenate by using a small artists paintbrush or q-tip/cotton swab early morning increases the chances of more courgettes.
    Fig jam looks good!

Yh I read this about the water but had to cut back on watering on the bed next to it as these were lower down the hill so I don’t think it’s that. I think it’s probably the fertilisation like you said. Might have a go tomorrow morning. Didn’t know about trimming the lower leaves so will do this… and may attempt a second time at making courgette flute 😂

All members of the fig family secrete latex. It can be irritating to the skin, but it is harmless to eat because it gets neutralized by the natural acid in the digestive tract.
Figs are so easy to propagate and yield fruit in just a few years!
Carlos & Charlotte, this was a very nice and entertaining video, and I loved the mix of activities. It really shows rural Portuguese life and how it can be enjoyed. Alll the best! Cathy

Thanks for the lovely comment! We seem to have got away with the fig irritation so far but will try to be more careful just incase. Thanks for the heads up 😊

Those plums look delicious. If your making jam you can cut away the eaten bits and use the parts that are ok! The figs you picked will be edible but you should wait until they turn darker like one of the ones you picked, was turning black.. that, is when they are delicious!!

@@leafside we find if we leave gigs to that point that the wasps beat is to it 😅 we will definitely get more in next couple of days so hopefully there will be a couple of darker ones

Hello, interesting to see how you make figjam. How i make jam is 1kg of figs and 1 kg of sugar, no ad of water. First you put in your figs than cover with the sugar. Let sit for some hours or overnight in de fridge. Then boils until done= +- 10 min. Put in the jar, close the lid, flip the jar on the lid for +- 15min, flip again and let cool down. It will seal.

@@TheSunnySaudadeProject Oh, I forget to mention, I also put in 1/2 of lemon juice, this will accentuate the color of the jam
