    2:25 sounds like something robert glasper would play

    As a guitar player I do feel an infinitesimal amount of jealously how grand a piano sounds with chords. Rich and smooth chords man!

      That's why after many years playng guitar i switched to piano. The harmony in guitar is very limited compared to piano. Not to mention clusters with major 2 and minor 2 that are not possible to play on guitar.

      Especially being able to do all sorts of close voicing and big spread voicing on piano. Then how 2nds on piano work and are like a quivering mess on guitar.

    Noticed this common tone technique being used by Steely Dan a lot. It's pretty cool that you can go quite far out in terms of each chord and it's relationship to the initial starting position but still maintain a sense of coherence.

      Nicholas T Semrad is a good friend :) We've discussed this stuff at length ... if you want to be able to rearm ... you HAVE to be able to do this exercise. Otherwise, one will be limited in harmonic choices!

    with the descending bass note on the left hand, how do you choose which chords to play? I mostly know chords that follow the diatonic structure

    • @alamolalamol9426
      @alamolalamol9426 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to figure out how the top note relates to the bass one being played. That is the starting point and then experiment until you find the sound you like..

    Most of the time I can only see your head and not the notes you're playing. At 1:53 you call out Abmaj7#9. The score says #11. It doesn't look like a #11 you're playing. Sounds like just a 9. Also at 2:12. Ebmaj7 has a 6th and 9 in there. Some piano tutorials have the graphic of the keyboard that shows exactly what they're playing. I know it's not for an acoustic piano but it sure helps. Seeing is believing.

    • @j3po784
      @j3po784  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good eyes! At 1:53 I made a mistake while I was talking -- it is indeed Abmaj7#11 not #9. You can see that I'm playing a D, which is the #11 ;) At 2:12, you are absolutely correct that there's a 6 and 9 in there. Normally with Major seventh chords, you're sorta free to add those (but not a #11). I'm doing more tutorials (check out my Instagram channel @iamj3po) and the new ones have direct overhead camera so it's a bit easier to see what I'm doing.

      illwiz every note works with every bass note if you know that you can put almost every chord you want as long as it sounds good you can change to chords that dont make sense in a key context but work chromaticly with a melody note as a common tone this is a good excersise for discovering movement , voicings etc the chords and voicings you put in are up to you :) i hope this helped
      Peace

      Tycho Poupeye what if your aiming for a certain sound I like his sound but I want to add that harmonic change he did at the very end I wanna use that melody through out the progression
