    This is a great video and explanation. Did anyone else mentally stick a pin in this and think "hmm this is a lot to remember, I better improve my jazz voicings first before I branch into neo-soul"

      🎸 to 🎹 or 🎹 to 🎸...think in intervals (5ths 4ths n 3rds) when building chords...not names.

Jazz, blues, soul,funk, country, rock, pop, reggae, etc. I realised after many years of piano experience that I can't determine the music, please help me at your earliest convenience!

    Great video. I don''t know of anybody else who explains how they construct a solo on youtube. It's like the one you did in 2018 how to take a jazz solo over funk. It is so inspiring. When I play it my fingers naturally explore other options and that is the best of all. Keep on doing it. You the man!

    The main obstacle in neo soul music for me is that it's hard to find a tonal center, and thus difficult to write a melody on the progression. And it becomes kinda trial and error thing to write a neo soul progression and/or melody.

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Absolutely! It's important to understand the harmony of each chord so you can write the melody line around this.

  • @dibaliba
    @dibaliba 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    2:01 the Bm11 voicing make a Minor Second interval, but it still sounds good.

    • @aviv312
      @aviv312 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      b9 usually sounds good along with a b5 and when it resolves to a minor chord (didnt watch the video yet so i don't know if that's the case but just giving general advice)

    • @dibaliba
      @dibaliba 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aviv312 nope, in that 2:01 voicing, it is 9 and b3 of Bm11 make a Minor Second interval

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The 9 and flat 3 always sound good together in the right context 🙂

  • @hairongchen1634

    Dude,The last Eb major 13th chord sounds like exactly a C minor first inversion add 9th add 11th, I've tried to add the 5th of the Eb major chord in it, and it sounds like a Eb major extended version, does that means the 5th note of a major chord is also extremely important to define its quality when you have other extended notes.

    Really nice progression, breaks the rules and shouldn’t really work, first phrase moves back to the Bb from e min for example, but sounds amazing. Last chord is cleverly done as the ear can hear the F (resolving to the Bb) but it’s never actually played.
