This is a great video and explanation. Did anyone else mentally stick a pin in this and think "hmm this is a lot to remember, I better improve my jazz voicings first before I branch into neo-soul"
Great job as always very interesting have trouble with my big fingers 3 middle ones between 2 black keys you got better way more comfortable trick maybe lol
Hi! You really inspired me to improve my piano skills. I just want help from you in about how to distinguish between music genre viz. Jazz, blues, soul, funk, country, rock, pop, reggae, etc. I realised after many years of piano experience that I can't determine the music, please help me at your earliest convenience!
Great video. I don''t know of anybody else who explains how they construct a solo on youtube. It's like the one you did in 2018 how to take a jazz solo over funk. It is so inspiring. When I play it my fingers naturally explore other options and that is the best of all. Keep on doing it. You the man!
The same chord progression from your C13sus4 video and what I’m noticing is anytime we have a 13 chord we can utilize open fourth voicing built upon the third
The main obstacle in neo soul music for me is that it's hard to find a tonal center, and thus difficult to write a melody on the progression. And it becomes kinda trial and error thing to write a neo soul progression and/or melody.
b9 usually sounds good along with a b5 and when it resolves to a minor chord (didnt watch the video yet so i don't know if that's the case but just giving general advice)
Dude,The last Eb major 13th chord sounds like exactly a C minor first inversion add 9th add 11th, I've tried to add the 5th of the Eb major chord in it, and it sounds like a Eb major extended version, does that means the 5th note of a major chord is also extremely important to define its quality when you have other extended notes.
Idk if anyone is still answering comments but here's my question - can the chord progression be anything as long as the voice leading stays repetitive and the bass is chromatic or same?
@@Piano_Pig great, that’s a relief! When I play other instruments, I often just do whatever it takes to “get there” but I do my best in piano to do the right thing, so it’s nice to hear “do what’s comfortable”. Love the channel!
Awesome video! Hey, have you thought about starting a tik tok account? It’s has a huge user base, your able to push ur brand out there, tons of people can duet you and play music using ur videos/audios, and way more. It’d be a great way to expand ur brand and something fun for all of us! Just an idea! :))
Really nice progression, breaks the rules and shouldn’t really work, first phrase moves back to the Bb from e min for example, but sounds amazing. Last chord is cleverly done as the ear can hear the F (resolving to the Bb) but it’s never actually played.
This is a great video and explanation. Did anyone else mentally stick a pin in this and think "hmm this is a lot to remember, I better improve my jazz voicings first before I branch into neo-soul"
dude I'm a guitar player trying to learn piano and with your lessons, I've gotten farther in 1 month than actually any other channel. THANKS A LOT!
Wow and I’m a piano player tryin to learn guitar 😂
That's great to hear Armando! Keep up the good work 🙂
Me too!!! I play guitar but ive been dabbling with piano for years and wanna learn this JUICY progression...GREAT STUFF!!!
Love this
🎸 to 🎹 or 🎹 to 🎸...think in intervals (5ths 4ths n 3rds) when building chords...not names.
The timing of the smashing the like button made me chuckle.
Like button smashed!
These chords sound awesome.
Thanks man! Glad you like them! 😁
Thank you attending Full Sail this is very helpful!
I thought it was impossible to convert my classical music into jazz and neo soul. But you made it sound so easy and I'm achieving it! Thanks a lot!
That's great to hear!
Great job as always very interesting have trouble with my big fingers 3 middle ones between 2 black keys you got better way more comfortable trick maybe lol
Move you thumb further to the edge of the key so it's not directly in-between the two black notes
@@Piano_Pig will try thanks
Great video, i will try learning and posting Neo soul melodies.
You do like your juicy Neo Soul progressions Simon.🍊🍊🍊Some lovely voicings and very helpful breakdowns. Warmest thanks.🌞🙏🇬🇧🌞
Haha I certainly do! Glad you enjoyed it man 😃🎹🐷
Surprising how many videos don't tell you the chord or the notes I'm the scale or the reasons.
Great video.
Dude..weird comment, but i like seeing ur face before the tutorial starts (as opposed to the older videos) lol. It just helps make things connect idk

I love this SO much! Great job explaining things! What I love most about Jazz are the lush chords and neo soul has the lushest. Robert Glasper +++
Mind blowing and awesome chords. We need more on NeoSoul chords and progression construction.
Thank you for the good work. you are a blessed man.(Brazil)

Great sound. Gonna have to give this a try. Thanks Simon!
No worries Col, glad you enjoyed it 🙂

Thanks man, I appreciate that 🙏
This whole voice leading to glue harmonically unrelated chords is breaking my brain
When your brain hurts, that's when you know you're getting better 👍
Amazing chords! Thanks Simon
No worries bro!
Good job Simon!
Thanks man! 🙏
Algún día aprenderé a tocar piano para deleitar este tipo de Neo Soul
Great video!! How would you go about improvising a melody or licks over something like this since every chord alters the scale?
This was awesome! Thank you!
Great lesson Simon. I learned a lot from that and will be downloading and jamming with it all weekend!
That's great to hear Alwyn! Enjoy! 🙂
Awesome
You're a genius
I wish I could learn to play piano like this... 🎹
You absolutely can! It just takes time, patience and hard work. Anyone can do it 🙂

Absolutely! It's important to understand the harmony of each chord so you can write the melody line around this.
I have the same problem

You deserve more subscribers Bro👍... Awesome
cool
just broke my keyboard smashing that like button broseph
I love this channel
Thanks for being here dude!
Good job on that one!
Thanks dude! 🙏🙏
I suppose with that c# in the BM11 you could slip in a bit of D melodic minor?
2:01 the Bm11 voicing make a Minor Second interval, but it still sounds good.
b9 usually sounds good along with a b5 and when it resolves to a minor chord (didnt watch the video yet so i don't know if that's the case but just giving general advice)
@@aviv312 nope, in that 2:01 voicing, it is 9 and b3 of Bm11 make a Minor Second interval
The 9 and flat 3 always sound good together in the right context 🙂

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 brotha.
I hate that my favorite kind of music is so damn hard to make chords for
Hello
I got interested in the Academy site.Do you happen to have any discount events?
Idk if anyone is still answering comments but here's my question
- can the chord progression be anything as long as the voice leading stays repetitive and the bass is chromatic or same?
What’s with the Csus13? Is this a borrowed chord from a parallel scale? Or is it another type of substitution?
@pianopig Why use the thumb of the right hand to cover two notes when the left hand is just covering the 1&3?
Purely personal preference, that just seems to be the way I play that voicing. Feel free to do whatever you find most comfortable 🙂
@@Piano_Pig great, that’s a relief! When I play other instruments, I often just do whatever it takes to “get there” but I do my best in piano to do the right thing, so it’s nice to hear “do what’s comfortable”. Love the channel!
What scale would you use to solo over this D aeolian/dorian
I have some question
Is Bm11 includes Dom7 and Add9 ?
And CSus13 includes Dom7+add9+Add6 ?
Is that backing in 4/4 or 2/4?
THIS SHIT IS JUICY
Hi there, I’m a paid member, but I cannot find the jam track for this session. Can you send me a link? Thx!

Aww you really do read comments ! Super noice 👍
Course I do! Thanks for hanging around the channel 😁
Nobody can say first now
Not really good in identifying music genres but are the LOFI music a Neo Soul?
