Embark on the adventure with UltraTrailSteven-because the trail is where the magic happens! Thank you for being a part of the trail family. Keep watching, keep subscribing, and let's conquer the trails together!
While it sucks that this happened to you I think this documenting of the issue discovery, surgery, and recovery process will help a lot of people now and in the future. I'm looking forward to seeing you get all of this behind you and watching you out on the trail again! I'm also really interested in how you'll build your base fitness and speed again once you're back to running. You've got a lot of series that you can make based on this unfortunate set back that can really help a lot people not only who previously ran, but who are new to running.
That’s a great perspective, and I really hope this series helps a lot of people!
Brrroooo... That is one heck of a surgery. It's amazing that they had you walking so soon after. Rest up, many 100's in your future!
Yeah the stairs only a couple hours after was nuts. Thanks man!
Im impressed with this too! I wish you a good recovery 💪🏼
December of 2017 I had total hip replacement. March of 2018 I fell on some black ice in our driveway and the implant rotated in such a way it penetrated my femur and gave me a nasty spiral fracture.
At almost 70 now I’ll be riding the MS City 2 Shore 75 miles on this coming Saturday. Keep yourself moving as much as your body tells you to. If you can’t move too much work on your cardio.
Please don’t fall! Best of luck to you.
@@kge420 So true. Regardless of our age, we need to keep moving and doing all that our bodies allow us to do. At 71, my body tells me exactly what it can do and I listen to it. But occasionally I tell it, "Stop whining and get on board!"
I work in PT and love to see videos like this! Thank you for sharing! Keep documenting this journey and recovery as you embark on returning to running :)
Thank you! Will do!
You’re such a fighter, Steven. This is truly “doing hard things”! Been wearing your hat a lot lately -solidarity! Thanks for sharing this journey with us. It’s an honor to support you (and your family that’s going thru it, too)
Thanks so much for the support, Nick!
Horrible. Best luck on healing. God be with you in this process.
Thank you!
Oh man, I'm in the same situation. Love running long distances, but found out that I have hip dysplasia on both sides (stronger on the right) a couple of years ago. The pain gets worse and worse every year. 44 years old. Will get the surgery done soon. Please keep us up to date. The fact that you are sharing this is tremendously helpful to me.
I am so glad this is helpful! I wish you the best!
What helped me is knowing there was a surgery I could get that could get me back to running. It was an easy decision then.
Wow! Thanks for sharing your experience! Can't believe how quickly they had you up walking. Amazing. As a fellow runner I know how much it sucks when you can't run, so I have no doubts you'll do everything you're supposed to do to get back. Just don't overdue it. That will probably be the hardest thing. Good luck.
Thanks!
My wife and I are huge fans of your videos and we both are ultra runners as well. We were surprised to see this tonight because my wife is one week away from a left total hip replacement as well. I had a total hip replacement in 2019 and was happy to get back to running trails the year after. We look forward to following you on this journey and wish you a healthy and speedy recovery.
Wow. I wish your wife a smooth surgery and speedy recovery as well! Glad to hear you are back running too!
My question is, for both, did you and your wife both get diagnosed with hip dysplasia as well???
@@dalejones1943 not sure if you are asking me or Mark Bean. No, my wife does not have hip dysplasia, which is why she was able to just have a labral repair.
@UltraTrailSteven it was directed to anyone who would answer?. I was wondering if long distance runners develop this condition???
@UltraTrailSteven I also wanted to thank you for sharing your video! I wish you a great recovery on your surgery!
Wow! Interesting to see the process. Hoping the recovery goes well and you are back on the trails soon.
Thank you!
Rest up, bud. Hoping for a quick recovery! Glad this surgery is behind you.
Thank you!
Was training up for my first marathon when my knee dislocated in a combat sport accident. It broke my tibia and snapped my ACL, PCL, LCL and MCL.
It took three months, two surgeries and a extrnal fixator to walk again. Might take us a while but I hope to see you at a Ultra soon enough.
Oh man! That sounds brutal!
Definitely hope to see you at an ultra at some point!
Had my left hip replaced five years ago with the anterior approach! Two years ago I started running again with run / walk at first to full 3k runs and eventually 5k at a 4:40k pace so far. You can do it! I set a rule to only run every other day! I love running and would rather run less than not at all…..
Glad to hear you are back to running!
Thanks so much for posting. I’m also a trail runner, due for hip replacement surgery next year. Documenting your journey has been very helpful to me. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Thank you! I’m glad this is helpful
I had a THR 12 years ago at the age of 40 due to Avascular Necrosis. I didn't start running until 8 years later but whilst not being the fastest runner in the world (was never going to be at 52) I'm able to run ok, am getting faster and am working my way through different distances (did a half this year and have a marathon booked next year) with the aim of doing ultra trails in the next couple of years. The surgery did leave me with slightly uneven leg lengths which may or may not have contributed to the many injuries I got when I started 4 years ago but I rarely get any injuries these days. Thanks for sharing your story.
Thanks for the info! Glad to hear you are running!
All the best again Steven! I really hope you get to fully recover, come back a lot stronger, and get to do what you love for as long as possible🙏💪
I hope so too! Thanks!
What a warrior… 🏆.
Keep on staying strong and continue to inspire us. 😍
Thanks!
I pray all goes well m. Back stronger than ever before you know it.
Thanks, Todd!
That sucks. But you've done good research and sounds like received good advice. Having been through knee replacement, I send best wishes for a speedy and fulfilling recovery.
Thank you, Paul!
Blessings Steven...hope you have a speedy recovery and are back on your feet very soon...
Thanks!
Wishing you a speedy recovery!! Thank you for sharing your journey!
Thanks!
Be strong mate, and I wish you a speedy recovery.
Thank you
PT here! Bruising is normal! It’ll get better. Stomach issues are caused by the opioids! Walk a lot to keep the blood flow going.
Wait til the 3rd week, it will feel a lot better!
Thanks! I’m walking as much as my PT has told me to
Praying for a speedy recovery and blessings
Thanks!
I'm gonna be following alright!! I have a CAM deformity in my right hip and have had labral issues in the past. I had an injection in the area about 7 years ago that did me really good and I've generally had zero issues since then. I was advised that my hip may wear out and need replacing in the future and as I continue running and (hopefully) make it to Leadville in a year I'm always worried about my hip. good luck to you!!!
Glad the injection worked so well for you. Mine wore off in about 4-5 days. Hopefully you make it to Leadville!
Up and walking in hours, that's AMAZING!! I love how he coached you on getting around with crutches... so important. I can't IMAGINE looking at the surgery tools beforehand!! 😳Wishing you a speedy recovery!! Enjoy your family now, you'll be back on the trails before you know it! Butt... that thumbnail... 😂
Yeah being conscious on the OR was not ideal lol. Thanks, Kelly!
Heal up well! Excited to see your progress.
Thanks
Great vid, X-rays look great and hope you make a speedy recovery!! Godspeed brother🙌
Thanks!
You’ll be fine. Everyone I know who has had hip/knee replacement has said the replacement parts work better than the original ;)
That's great to hear!
Good luck Steven as a fellow runner in know what it’s like when you can’t run I’ll be following your journey 👍🙏
Thank you!
Great video wishing you luck on your recovery. Keep it up. It’s very interesting content.
Thanks!
Wishing you all the best. Recovering from surgery is never easy. I’ve had 2 shoulder surgeries and everything was difficult. It will get better!!! Get lots of rest and the ice machine was amazing for me. I would fill my machine with frozen water bottles rather than ice cubes. It will last longer.
Thanks!
What a journey. Best wishes on recovery.
Thanks
Heyyyy Steven 😃👍
Hey buddy, how you doing? Had my hernia (6th hernia) surgery 3-weeks ago ( nice 4” scar by the bellybutton and a nice size piece of mesh covering the innerds)…. Im off work for 6-weeks. Im not allowed to do any ab exercises, can’t lift more than 10lbs….. however!!! I can walk and do an easy run ( pending on how I feel). I do ice it a lot and take ibuprofen… they had me on Percocet for a few days. Dude, I’m so over getting my mid section cut on !!! Told everyone the Alien baby popped up and took off running….
Funny, you showed the raised toilet seat, because my wife had her hip replacement done as well, and she got one. Told her I was going to get her a walker with a yellow tennis 🎾 ball on it… She had lots of physical therapy… she got this all done a few months ago. She walks good now. Any hoot, wanted to reach out to you and see how you are doing?! You’ll heal quickly! Lots of ice and rest…. PT I’m sure….( I sound like a nagging guy telling you what you already know 🙂🙂 ). Hope Val is getting stronger as well…. Hard to keep to great trail runners down 💪🏃♂️🏃♂️🙂👍 ! Take care buddy !
Thanks, Mike! I am doing well. PT three days per week, walking every day too. Today I got to practice getting in and out of the vehicle, and went for a short drive!
Just had left labrum repair. right is in 6 weeks. Doing fairly well except for allergic to oxycodone so just using tramadol and tylenol. Lots of therapy. you guys are cute.
Oh man! I hope the tramadol works better for you. Thanks
Very cool you chose to be vulnerable and share your journey. This stuff honestly scares me and makes me think twice about the toll 100’s take on our body.
Thanks, Lindsey!
Cheering you on brother!! 🦾
Thank you, John!
Get well soon, stay strong...
THanks!
Muarten gels were great post surgery- only thing I could keep down.
Interesting
Wish you the best, Steven. As a fellow ultra-runner, I hope you'll be running again soon; yet, there's more to life than running. And I'm sure you already know that, but sometimes when it gets dark we might forget about that for a moment. Stay strong, brother, peace 🙏
Thanks!
you're hardcore, the both of you. you'll ne back to 100% soon!
Thanks!
I hope week 2 is a bit easier for you! Tramadol is no fun..... re the ice machine, I used my compression boots pulled right up and on the lowest setting and shoved ice packs down them round my hip!
Nice! Thanks!
Best of luck with your recovery! I just scheduled surgery for FAI like your wife. Her videos were so helpful!
Question: When do you both think someone could start working full days from home (knowledge worker) based on your experiences? My surgeon said 2-3 days, but that seems kinda fast!
Yeah I would want at least a week. 2-3 days seems way to quick to me
Had my right hip done twice 9 years ago.
Twice??
@@UltraTrailSteven Yeah, 2nd time was due to a Staph infection.
@@travischaffin5834 oh no!!
Your another hip messed up as well? is it also painful as your replaced hip?
Yeah the right hip didn’t like cycling so I had to stop that. I had an xray and the right labrum is also completely calcified. Had an MRI on it and we will discuss next steps for it next week
Damn, listening to this is so waaaaay different to what I went through. I was sent hope with a course of blood thinning medication and paracetamol!!! I did take the full course of the thinning tablets but didn’t touch the paracetamol, not because I’m brave - which in not but - because I didn’t need it. I didn’t have any anaesthetic just spinal block so that helped in recovery. Don’t worry about the bruising, it will likely get worse before it gets better, I have some wonderful Technicolor pictures to frighten you with - it’s not a problem. I had swelling in the operated leg, it’s called ‘elephant leg’ - again nothing to worry about, it’s reduces over a couple of weeks with no lasting effects. Also I was warned about getting tired, which I did. Wake up feeling full of energy and two hours later completely dead and nodding off every 5 minutes, again nothing to worry about. I’ve had both hips replaced in the last 26 months and am fitter than I’ve been for a long time. You’ll be fine and back running, just do all your physio. You’ll be great.
😊I’m in the UK and had both hips (2022 and 2023) done privately (not on our NHS and no insurance) so in total it cast about $36000. Best money I’ve spent in a long time!!!
OMG thats expensive out of pocket! SHeesh. Glad to hear you are doing well! Thanks!
I’ve tried to send you some pictures of my bruising but can’t attach them here. It went all the way down to my foot. My toes were PURPLE!!! You’ll be back being active before you know it.
From your wife’s experience do you feel PT at a chain facility is fine? I’m having the same procedure in December after over 13 years of pain undiagnosed until 4 months ago. My other option is to do PT at Shirley Ryan in Chicago it’s just difficult to get downtown vs my neighborhood PT.
What do you mean chain facility? I had two weeks of in home PT, but I am starting PT at my regular PT’s office this week.
@@UltraTrailSteven sorry I should have clarified. Chain facility such as a Athletico, one of those PT facilities on every corner. At least in Chicago they are. Where as Shirly Ryan Ability Lab is a world renowned rehab facility. I know Jamie Fox the actor was there last summer.
@@emk6749 ah ok. I would just see what certifications the PT’s have and make sure the one you see is focused on sports
My perspective, long distance running is a bad idea for most people. If you have bad running form, the consequences will be hip replacement, knee replacement, etc… and most people have poor running form because it’s highly difficult for most people to develop proper form given genetics, flexibility, etc.. i love to run, but starting to think i should minimize this as i approach 60. Would you agree with my perspectives?
No. Partially maybe. It’s important to have good form, but that’s doesn’t matter as much on trail. I think the biggest impact to reduce injury is strength training. Have a strong trunk
THank you! That fall sounds horrible! Good luck in the race!
Had mine done 30 days ago. Walking without cane or walker by day four. Zero pain now. Not sure why I waited so long.
Wow that’s awesome! Glad your recovery has gone so well!
Good luck Steven. I’m now 18 months post hip replacement and back to my beloved trail running. I must say that the road to recovery is non-linear. The proverbial roller coaster! The key for me was trust in the outcome, AND a ton of time going core/hip strengthening as part of the rehab. I had a similar journey through my other hip replacement 10 years ago, and returned to doing all the crazy athletic activities that I love. You’ll get there.
That’s so great to hear! I definitely plan to get back in the gym as soon as I am able.
Hi Steven, I had a total hip replacement in 2012 at the age of 38. I'm now 50 and a number of years back into running while it the beginning I was sure I wasn't allowed/able anymore. I'm now back into marathon running and am working my way to a first ultra. I lost a large number of years after the operation because of having a conservative doctor and the advice not to run. Now I'm beating my times from my younger self so it is all possible, I am ofcourse not a pro. Keep believing you will be back to ultrarunning and you will be alright.
That’s awesome man! Thanks for sharing
All the best from a marathoner with a shoulder replacement-similar experience and I wish you good healing!
Thanks!
Thank you for the many tips!! Going shopping for a few things thanks to your advice. Best wishes for a safe and fast recovery.
Thank you. Best wishes to you as well
Dude! This is crazy. Major surgery and they only gave you Oxy as a backup? Bro! My hernia surgery pain was so bad. They had to dose me up several times in the recovery bay and then after only 3 days of pain med then ibuprofen and Tylenol after. I had to use the Magnesium Citrate liquid for bathroom. And crazy you had to take all those meds throughout the night. I also got one of those knee pillows that I use every night. Def the pills and lack of real food that is messing up your stomach.
Yep, major surgery. The pain was never unbearable except that first night.
You'll definitely be able to run again-and not just for a couple of miles.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thank you!
wow bro, what's your opinion of compression socks btw?
I don't like them.
quick & speedy recovery my friend & lotts of prayers
Thank you!
I wish you all the best. Thank you for sharing. I have been training more regularly for a marathon and your channel has been part of my jouney for some years now. I wish you all the best in your recovery. Stay strong. Kudos from Belize.
Thank you!
Funny story, we almost moved to Belize in 2021
Ooof! This looks so intense! I had my second of two bunion surgeries this past summer. And while nowhere near as rough, I was nodding along at a lot of what you said. I love how thorough and detailed you are documenting all of this. I hope anyone out there in the same boat finds their way to you and your videos. This is exactly the kind of thing that would make me feel better if I were facing a hip surgery. Sending you all the best for a strong recovery.
Thank you so much! I really hope this video series helps others!
Now for the recovery! I'm thinking first week is the toughest so you've got this!!
Yes! Thank you!
Man, watching you on those stairs... man. Wishing you an amazing and thorough recovery. Really would like to share some miles with you in the future. Keep up your awesome work... great video... I can tell the process of creating helps carry you as much as it helps carry us.
Thanks! At some point we will share some miles
Brotha. You're one tough hombre and have an amazing attitude! Good on you. At 71 y.o. and having run 106 ultras and 25-100 milers, my body has been adequately abused over the years. I'm still running though because I'm a runner and thats what I do. Your choice of an ice recirculation machine to reduce inflammation is a good choice. Having had both knees scoped, I can attest to the benefit of ice therapy. Take your recovery slow and easy and let your body heal as it must. Keep the faith.
Thanks so much! Glad to hear you’re still crushing ultras
@@UltraTrailSteven Well, I'm no longer crushing ultras, but I'm still running. In my prime, I ran the Angeles Crest 100 ten consecutive times with a best time of 22:57 and ran Western States 100 five times, taking home 4 silver (sub 24) buckles and 1 finishers buckle. Nothing more rewarding than finishing a tough 100 miler and basking in the satisfaction of a solid effort and the gratitude that your body endured. Despite all that, I'm seriously humbled by what you're enduring now and how you're handling it, with optimism and perseverance. Keep up the good fight and know that you're being an inspiration to all runners who are struggling with physical challenges and limitations.
@@billramsey8934 wow that’s some amazing results! WSER 5 times!! Wow.
Thank you for the kind words!
@@UltraTrailSteven My pleasure I assure you. Heal up, stay well and remember, there are many more trails awaiting you/us in the future! Be patient.
I'm 56, an avid cyclist that competes in several 100 mile bike races a year. I have also completed in half Ironmans. In the last 2 years I've had both hips repaired (Labrum repair with FAI). I had mild arthritis in both hips but went with this route first. One hip has been great but the other I started to get pain and stiffness in it. I went back to my surgeon and arthritis has spread in the hip. (Grade 3 almost 4). I am having left total hip replacement Oct. 16 here in Asheville NC. I'm getting super nervous but I really want to get my life back. I'm a school teacher and coach (basketball). I coach cross country for years. Thanks for a great video.
Wishing you a speedy recovery too!
I had a full hip replacement in 2016 at age 63. I had run 5 marathons over the previous 7 years. My doctor told me I should stop running. In early 2017 I ran/walked the Marine Corps 17.75k. In 2018 and 2019 I ran the Richmond marathon. In 2020 I had my second hip replacement on my other leg at age 67. Took about 18 months before I started running and I shortened my stride, picked up my cadence and took it slow. Ran my first half marathon this year at age 71. Not sure about the 100-milers, but there is life after a hip replacement or 2. Get back to running. Sounds dumb, but if ultimately the hip fails, you can get another replacement and maybe only at that point stop running. Don’t give up on what you love. Oh, and get the hip X-rayed ever year.
Thanks! Glad to hear you are running!
Hang in there, I had some severe bruising a few days after mine as well. I got nothing on the meds for you, due to knowing my self, I took half of an oxy at night to help me sleep and that was pretty much it. the Dr. was surprised when I declined his offer to refill it at my one week follow up. I'm envious of the ice machine, I just used ice packs, fortunately we had a large freezer and my wife was a champ and rotating them through. You will get through it and be better out the other side. I am having my other hip replaced sometime after the beginning of the year.
Thank you!
How's the progress?
Eh ok. I caught some kind of respiratory infection which sucks, cause coughing hurts the hip
@@UltraTrailSteven Did they send you home with an incentive spirometer to help improve lung function?
@@colleennolan-dahlstrom7251 no. Don’t know what that is
@@UltraTrailSteven They gave me one after my foot fusion surgery. You can google it. Hope it clears up for you. Feel better 😉
Got both my hips resurfaced in 2011. Do whatever I want. They had me walking with Walker the next day.
You'll do great
Thanks
I subscribed to your podcast after hearing you talk about it a few videos ago. It is GREAT! Be patient with the recovery from the surgery. You will be back to running.
Thanks! Glad you like to podcast!
Wow, what a week! Praying week 2 will be better and that your recovery goes smoothly.
Thank you!
This definitely sucks, but best wishes for a speedy recovery sir.
Thanks!
Its been almost 10 days since your surgery.. I hope your recovery is going well.. Hope these weeks go by quickly for you..
this is rough to hear everything you are talking about the surgery... gosh you are brave and sound very positive.. glad this stupid surgery is out of the way
Thanks!
Hang in there. Have a speedy recovery.
Thanks
GREAT documentation. Almost threw up like, eight times, but looks like we all survived week 1. 😅
lol sorry for the graphic content. Jk I’m not sorry lol
LOL!

Yeah it was very weird!
It’s NEVER tmi 💩 Aw Val what a great nurse! 👏 👏
Hopefully recovery keeps going relatively well 😊

@@UltraTrailSteven anyone (not just runners) have this kind of surgery should watch this and follow your recovery. A lot of good practical information.
