Eibach Triple Pro-Truck Review! Silverado - Bronco - Ranger

  • 3 ‪@ShockSurplus‬ staff vehicles were all on Eibach Pro Truck stage 2 kits at the same time not too long ago. Eibach provided one of the kits, we purchased the other two from genuine curiosity to how their coilovers would compare to the ‪@FOXFACTORY‬ 2.0 Performance series we were running previously.
    This review dives into how the Eibach stacks up against Bilstein, Rancho, and Fox 2.0 options specifically. Every truck here is going their separate way after this review, its looking like the Ranger is moving into ‪@FalconPerformanceShocks‬ or ‪@DobinsonsSuspension‬ , the Bronco has moved into ‪@iconvehicledynamicstv‬ 2.5 coilovers, and the Silverado is likely going to ‪@bilsteinUS‬ 6112 + 5160 shocks.

    I purchased a pro truck lift stage 1 for my Tacoma pretty much when they first were released and I have loved this set up! It’s perfect for the type of off-roading I do and being a daily driver I like the better handling on road. I believe this is the best bang for your buck you can buy as far as a 2.0 monotube shock goes.

    I chose the eibach pro kit for my ranger. I threw a rough country front coilover set just for a temporary fix(stock fx4 were leaking) along with a used set of goodyear 265/70/17 ht's. 6 months now of my truck being dangerous to drive and horriblly uncomfortable im looking forward to an improved ride. Im planning on setting a 1.5" lift and possibly going back to stock tire size later on for fuel efficiency so adjustability was important. I wanted a shock i can adjust on the vehicle too which was a consideration as well as being a little stiffer for better cornering.

    I'm about to put 37s on my Bronco, Sounds like the Eibachs are good for the lift but maybe underdamped for the heavy wheel/tire combo. Cant wait to get feedback on the Icon 2.5 vs Bilstein 6112 options.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely! We think the Icons and Bilsteins are the better choice for a 37" or taller tire or a wheel and tire package that weighs 110 lbs per corner or more. The Bilsteins probably are the most comfortable, but those Icons can really boogie through the big stuff, so if you like to party you might be a big fan of those.

    Toss in the Ironman 4x4 stage 2 foam cell package if you're going to look at Dobinsons.
    I just got a 23 4Runner ORP and I'm down to Eibach Pro stage 2R, Bilstein 6112 (which I've tested on another 23 4runner and loved the ride and handling) and Dobinsons INF (non-KDSS) kit.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We're underway on a couple different vehicles with Ironman setups, so far we're not that hot on them for the price. We have one subaru with a blown shock, and an xterra with a rear end that's performing pretty poorly with their setup, we're not sure if the rear shocks are blown or not, no visible oil, but lots of bottom out in the rear with a minor load on their leaf springs and shocks.
      Out of the options you mentioned, Bilstein will ride firmer/sportier than the Dobinsons kit, both 60mm shocks and same piston surface area, but dobinsons uses a high flow linear piston compared to Bilstein's digressive piston. Eibach 2.0 is going to feel softer than the Bilstein, more like the Dobinsons, but less higher-speed offroad capability due to the smaller piston.

    would love to see a comparison with the Dobinson MRA or IMS to the 6112 and 8112 shocks. Seems like a good match up!

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are no fair comparisons between the MRR and 8112s, but the IMS vs. the 6112s is definitely in the books for sure. Bilstein does not make a smooth body shock with adjusters like the MRR, and Dobinsons does not make a shock with position-sensitive dampening like the 8112s. So even if prices were similar, which they are not, it is not really a fair comparison for either part.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The recommended tire size is a 35, although as you see the 37s still work. The main issues are that the compressed length of the Eibach is short enough to allow a 37 to hit the fender even without the flare or with a flare delete and the overall unsprung mass of 37 seems to be a bit too much for them to handle. The fitment issues can be mitigated by trimming or running a longer bump stop or some sort of spacer under the stop, however I think they will start to run into dribbling issues on any wheel and tire combination that totals in at more than 110 lbs per corner. I do not know of a 37" or larger tire that weighs less than that with a wheel, so if 37s or larger might be on the horizon, you may want somethin a little more than a 2" body shock. We finally have the 6100s/6112s for the two doors in and ready to go, so they should be going on and getting reviewed soon. Even without testing them, I can say they are the better choice at this price point if you plan on a 37. Their overall length is a little short, but you can make a 37 fit with a tiny (~3/8") top mount spacer, and will certainly have the capacity to cope with the extra unsprung mass a little better without dribbling.

    Just bought a 2022 colorado z71. I use as daily driver and no offroad, but wanted a little lift and add 265/70/17 tires. Want to do 2.25 lift in front with 1 inch block in back to level it out. Would eibach coilover 2.0 be a good move? I want to ensure it would be a comfortable ride and not too stiff on turns and potholes. Would it be better than stock regarding daily comfort?

      We have heard some mixed reviews on them as well however it definitely is hard to get a 2.0 dialed in. I am not so sure they will make it into the test mix though, we do not sell there stuff, and there is still a lot of things we do sell that we have yet to test on our own vehicles. Definitely a possibility someday, but they are low on the list for right now.

    Love you guy's content. I've been researching suspension stuff pretty heavily for my 22 Ford Ranger. It's mostly for daily driving but I want to get into overlanding/offroad, so I want to make sure that capability is there. I also might tow a car every now and again, so I gotta keep that capability too.
    What would be the strong recommendation between these, as I'm stuck on not finding much more direct comparisons with the Ranger chassis.
    Eibach Pro Truck 2R
    Bilstein 6112/5160
    Teraflex Falcon Sport
    That's what I've narrowed down to. Any opinions and insights are welcome.

      The Eibachs and the Bilsteins are definitely our two favorites so far. You can not go wrong with either option really, but if you prefer a little tighter handling or plan on adding a lot of constant weight go Bilstein, otherwise the Eibachs are pretty hard to beat, especially with how much travel they offer

    Why did you not include Ranchos? I had the adjustable ones (9000?) on my F150 and it was a big improvement over stock especially when towing. Set on 5 out of ten they were noticeably stiffer than stock and prevented surge. I now have a new F150 Platinum and need to level but not sure about replacing brand new springs and shocks.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This review is just about Eibach as the title suggests, however those Ranchos are probably our least recommended part these days. They do not have great quality control, and any basic monotube like these Eibachs will ride and perform better without having to get out the truck to make adjustments. They also last exponentially longer and far less failure prone

    I have 107k on my 5100s thinking it’s time to change them out. I’ve always loved the control of them but think they’re a little stiff over potholes and speed bumps. From the description of the previous videos fox 2.0 and 6112 comparison it sounds like i would like the fox or eibach a little more than the 6112. But i don’t really seriously off-road. I would like to travel one day but too busy right now. Running a 14 Sierra with the 5.3. So between the eibach 2.0 vs fox 2.0 vs 6112 I’m unsure of which to go with also would new UCAs show added benefit to the ride quality?

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you want something a little softer then I would definitely go Eibach as long as you do not mind having a minimum of 1.75" of lift. They are a lot longer in travel than most other things so they will absolutely require an aftermarket upper control arm or your stock upper ball joints will bind and limit travel.

  • @jsclayton

    I’ve got a 22 Silverado Z71 and have been looking for a level with emphasis on on-road comfort. The stock Ranchos feel awful rough or sharp when hitting bumps with a little speed, and the unloaded back end likes to dance around. Had 5100s on my 07 and wasn’t a fan. Looking at Kings since they seem to universally be described as comfortable, but I’m pretty sure that’s overkill for on-road. Any thoughts in the much more crowded $1-2K range?

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you weren't a fan of the Bilstein, then Fox or Eibach would be our suggestions in that budget range. The same performance differences we see here on these vehicles would be applicable to the 22 Silverado. Fox 2.0s feel like King Comfort onroad, but lack the offroad performance and handling in the tough stuff, which is fine for 99% of drivers that aren't ripping in the dirt often.

    What are the benefits of leveling out a vehicle? There seems to be a lot more cons than pros. If all you want to do is off road, I get it. Mo clearance, mo betta. However, most other tasks would just decrease fuel economy especially when hauling any kind of load as the vehicle is raked back.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Surprisingly, none of the vehicles in this video besides maybe the Bronco are level, and even that was not intentional. The extra 50-60lbs of a bigger spare, spacer, relocation brackets, and reinforcement plates made the rear sit lower than Eibach's intended settings. We could have easily adjusted them, but that 2 door is never seeing any load, and we were off to the next suspension system before it even mattered. Even then, we all are running just about the minimum amount of lift needed to fit our respective tires. When setting up customers with a lifted suspension package, we try to steer them away from having a truly level setup, particularly if they plan on towing and hauling their vehicle. Some applications like the 19+ Rangers do have an obscene amount of forward rake that hampers handling, hurts ride, and even causes the crash avoidance systems to go off erroneously, so sometimes getting the truck more level than it was out of the factory can be very beneficial, with very little loss in load stability of gas mileage. Having a more even weight distribution helps everywhere, but with everything, there is a point of diminishing returns. Even then, unless you never plan on carrying any weight or do not have a load leveling aid like airbags or Sumo Springs, we hardly ever recommend our customers set their vehicles up to be dead level. In fact, oftentimes, lifting the rear allows you to run a longer travel shock for better articulation off-road, so even real off-road enthusiasts are better off doing more than a basic level. Furthermore, most modern trucks and SUVs are really limited in upward or bump travel in the rear, so adding some distance from the stops with a little lift out back is just as if not more beneficial than lifting the front on some applications. I think the big reason many people swing towards more of a leveling kit is that most people prefer the look of a truck that sits more level, and on most applications, you can run a much larger tire just by lifting the front. In most cases, gas mileage is the same, if not better than it would be if you did a true lift kit that lifted the front and rear the same or a similar amount, and it gets people to their goal in tire size as well as better shocks without spending too much money. Realistically though, somebody looking to level, lift, wheel, or put their truck on big tires is not really all that concerned with gas mileage or, at the very least is more than well aware they will be losing some MPG. That said, we are usually less concerned with ride height and more about actual suspension performance, which is why we are such a big fan of the Eibachs. On most applications, their 2.0 coilovers usually work as well at close to stock height as they do with some lift or leveling and are adjustable while installed on the vehicle. So you can get the same benefits in ride and handling while maintaining stock height or close to it, and you do not have to monkey with a spring compressor to get them dialed in.

      Eibach and Fox both subdue the rough trails and gravel road chatter, with ample damping for light hauling. Bilstein wins in the handling department, but sometimes lack in the comfort department, but not always.

      The 2.0 coilovers for your application are a good bit longer than stock, so they really should not be set at less than 1.75" of lift over stock in the front. Which with the weight og that bumper, will certainly not be at their lowest recommended preload setting

    1. How do the Eibach Pro Stage 2 front coilovers compare with the $3000.00 - $5000.00 Fox, Old Emu and King shock kits that have adjustable damping?
    2. I just installed the Eibachs on my 2009 4-Wheel Drive, double-cab Tacoma, and they are very firm on paved roads. Does the torque tightening on the upper and lower control arms affect how firm the shocks
    3. Do these shocks soften up some as they break in?

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1. The Eibachs work great and definitely punch above their price point, but they are pretty far off the anything that expensive. Anything in that price range will offer a much larger 2.5" body for better support while having better small bump sensitivity as well as allow them to remain more consistent, and they adjustability gives you way more flexibility to tune ride and handling to your preferences and uses. Some options like the OME BP51s, King 3.0s, and Bilstein 8112s are also position sensitive allowing them to provide far more plush ride in their primary ride zone while offering progressive support to prevent topping or bottoming out the shocks as you extend or compress the shocks outside of their main ride zone.
      2. Overtightening control arms can cause stiction or bind at those joints, not allowing them to operate smoothly which could hurt ride. More likely than not though, those coilovers probably just have a little too much preload. They were optimized around 3rd gens so they are set a little high out of the box for a 2G like yours.
      3. There is a short break in period particularly on the front coilovers, however you likely will not feel it as much as see a 1/4-3/4" drop in lift height from the front end from their initial height after the first 50-150 miles.

  • @2Tugz

    Can you expand more on the Eibachs being too short with 37s and touching the fenders? Are we talking body damage or just making contact? Would a shorter 37" tire than the 36.8 maxxis make enough difference to no be an issiue?

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They were short enough to start bending tabs on the front fenders with no flares, so if you left your flares on you would be in trouble if you like to drive fast in the dirt. These are pretty hard to bottom out, so with a little lighter foot and something that runs a little smaller like a KM3, you would probably be alright with a flare delete. Although we definitely heard them touch when it fully flexes out, it was not bad enough to cause damage, so if you are just worried about it when you are crawling you are probably fine. It really only becomes an issue when all four tires leave the ground simultaneously or a big rut, root, or rock jumps out in front of you. With that said, if sending it at speed is your thing, these probably are not the right shocks for you, especially with a 37. At this price point we think the Icon 2.5 EXPs are the real MVP for high speed shenanigans. They definitely run on the firm side of the spectrum, but we could not believe the stuff we were able to get away with after just simply sliding in a set of shocks and upper control arms.

    I have a 2018 f150 crew cab fx4 with 2.7L engine. I am currently running Bilstein 5100's at max height, which gives me 2 inches of lift, and 33" General Grabber Atx tires.
    I tow a camper weighing about 7000lbs about 7 times a summer and go to the sand dunes about the same.
    I'm debating between the Bilstein 6112/5160 or the Eiback pro truck 2r. Which would be the best setup for those conditions in your opinion?
    Also if I replace the rear lift block with a 1.75" taller block, should I add bump stop extensions or will the new shocks be able to handle the additional up travel without bottoming out or damaging driveline components?

      I would probably lean towards the Bilsteins simply because they are better under a load, and the larger body on the front struts will be more supportive for the times a set of whoops pop up or a dune falls away right in front of you. They may not be quite as comfortable over smaller bumps at lower speeds, but they will keep you going with less drama during those "uh oh" moments or when you are loaded down. The 5160s are plenty long enough to handle that much lift in the rear and are not any longer than stock when fully compressed so there is no need to worry about a bump stop spacers. These F-150s also have plenty of leeway at the rear driveline so that will not be a concern.

    I hate my stock Ranger shocks the most in chatter. On pavement as I cross unending construction patches and then on dirt when I hit dreaded washboard sections. Both instances lead to considerable clinching of cheeks. You guys really found the Eibach 2Rs with rear reservoirs to noticeably improve that? If so, guess I need to get on the backorder list.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely made a world of difference! The big thing with these Rangers is they gave them a heck of a lot of leaf spring and then gave them about 3" of rear high rake. So the rear springs are fairly stiff and with all the weight on the nose the rear chatters and skips along the pavement. Adding some lift to the front to shift weight more evenly in the chassis makes more difference than you would think and the super active and linear valving of the 2R rear shocks really keeps the rear tires on the pavement and make sure the suspension absorbs the bumps rather than sending them to your spine or sending the truck airborne. We have the 2R kits in stock now so no need to backorder and wait on them either www.shocksurplus.com/products/eibach-pro-truck-stage-2r-coilover-kit-front-coilovers-rear-reservoir-shocks-e86-35-048-02-22

    Yup the rear end issue on the bronco is because no sway bar.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yup and a track bar drop and it would have done well. Sasquatch Broncos do not get them, so we do think it was a bit of an oversight not to give a little more low speed dampening to mitigate more unwanted body motions, with so many Broncos not having a rear bar. We have tested a lot of other shocks on the Bronco at similar lift heights without having the same complaints, but adding a sway bar and track bar relocation is not a big deal, and if you like a softer ride, we think these would be killer.

    • @ShockSurplus

      Even though Eibach doesn't have their coilovers available, or the Stage 2 kits available - there's actually something better for what that price would be ($1200-1400 for the set).
      That's the BIlstein 6112 and rear 5160s, you get a beefier front shock, and a reservoir rear shock. This will transform your ride and be able to handle tougher terrain than the Eibach 2.0 in our experience.

      Both can technically be installed on Trail Boss or AT4 models however they pretty much max out at stock height in the front and the rear shocks can not take any more lift.

      Eibach Stage 2 or Bilstein 6112s and 5100s would both be great choices. The Eibach will ride a bit better unloaded but the Bilsteins will be better under a load so it really comes down to what you want to prioritize

      @@ShockSurplus ok, awesome. Is there a need for upper control arms with 2"? I've heard of the stock one breaking. I don't do high speed off road but I work off road and I'm always in the dirt and mud.

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You dont necessarily need one, but you do get more travel if you do upgrade. The reason why most stock arms are breaking is because they run an aftermarket coilover with enough travel to make the droop stops engage before they can fully extend, and hit those droop stops frequently. You will probably be fine without them, but we do find them to be a worthwhile upgrade for these new GMs
