Grandpa got a Winchester 1200 in 16 when he turned 14 years old.
When I turned 14, he handed it down to me. Kills everything I point it at, and everyone I’ve allowed to shoot it immediately begins their quest to buy their own 16. I’m super stoked to see big channels talk about the 16, let’s solidify its place in the mainstream.

Oh man, I learned to shoot clays as a young kid on my grandpa's 16 gauge model 1200 too. There's such an emotional connection to the gauge now that he's been gone for almost two decades. I think of him often when I'm out hunting with a 16.

"Drilling" is in fact pronounced as you did initially, i.e. as you would read it as an English word. You are correct though, that the German word for 3 is "Drei", which you also pronounced correctly. We appreciate the effort! Keep up the good work. Greetings from Germany.

My grandpa's gun of choice was a late 50s 16 gauge Wingmaster, he was a big pheasant hunter in upstate NY. I'll be taking it out for squirrels this weekend. When I was a kid at one point it was all I had for deer hunting.

  • @marcusgardner9300
    @marcusgardner9300 19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

I absolutely love the 16 guage and for all the reasons the Jim was explaining when he was explaining a legacy watch. My granoa taught me to shoot clays on a model 1200 in 16 guage and the gun is still in the fanily to this day.
I bought my wife an ithica model 37 feather weight in 16 gauge shortly after we were married so she could hunt with it. I think I paid less than $200 for it but it's by far my favorite shotgun we own purely for the uniqueness of the bottom feed/bottom eject action and for it being a 16 guage.
Thank you for doing an episode on this ”lead ballon” haha it was super fun.

First off, nice to see you guys talking smoothbores! I have two 16’s; my dad’s A5 Sweet from the late 60’s and my maternal grandfather’s model 12 from the 40’s. The comparison to quality mechanical watches is spot on with quality firearms. If you want to just have a smoke pole, the 870 is standard edition. If you want to just tell time from your wrist a Timex carries the load. Lastly, the 16 is to shot guns that the 25-06 is to rifles for me.

I recently 'inherited' my dad's 16 ga. Remington 1100, it has a 30" non-ribbed barrel with a fixed Improved Cylinder choke. He bought it new in 1968, the year before I was born, and it was his dedicated Dove gun. He's 82 now and hasn't been on a Dove shoot in more than a decade but it still cycles shells just fine, although now it favors a little heavier shot load.

I have a Browning Sweet Sixteen that I've had for 58 years. My dad gave it to me for Christmas when I was 11 years old. I can't imagine the number of cases of shells fired thru that shotgun. This was small town South Carolina and you could carry your shotgun on the school bus and put the gun in the corner of the classroom. I would go out to a friend's
farm or he would come out to my farm. We shot dove, duck, quail, and deer. I have two barrels. 26" IMP and 28" Mod. The shotgun cost $198 back then. We kept 2-3 bird dogs, pointers and setters. We also hunted on horseback in those days. Those were the good ole days.

I had an old Ithaca 16ga SxS I sold earlier this year. I love the cartridge and it was a beautiful gun that had just been refurbished when I bought it, but the stock dimensions didn’t fit me at all so I didn’t shoot it well. Don’t regret getting rid of it for that reason, but I would like to find another 16 SxS, an old LC Smith would be the top of my list

My best friend in high school had a 16 gauge Mossberg bolt action with a C-Lect choke on it. It was common back in 1972 to see bolt action shotguns, double barreled shotguns, and single shots in 16 gauge back then. The 20 gauge took over the 16 gauge slot with American hunters. When I was stationed in Germany, the 16 gauge competed with the 12 gauge in popularity. I have picked up an old Winchester single shot in 16 gauge and about four boxes of shells.

We had some single shot 16ga back in the 70s that were our go-to shotguns for everything from whitetails to turkeys to squirrels. Then the ammo ran out. Granted, we also used 20ga for everything, too. 12ga was a little big for squirrels but these days, if you're using steel, you kind of need a 12ga to reach up to the tops of some of the pecan and oak trees around where I grew up.

Love the talk, always interested in 16 but with 3" 20 gauge shells available and virtually no 16 gauge to be found in my area the 20 and 12's get the nod. Mark @37:54, a couple years ago I would have agreed with you completely but after buying a really nice shotgun from an older gentleman he once said "it's a shame I didn't hunt with it much, it's a tool and something that nice should get used." that has stuck with me. Don't be afraid to enjoy nice things with you can.

My 2nd shotgun was a Remington 870 16 ga. that I grew to love much more than my 1st the 12 ga. 870. Before my father passed he gave me his Remington Model 11-48 16 ga. another great 16 ga. shotgun. I agree with Ryan whole-heartedly that the 16 ga. is the perfect pheasant gun. While I've used the 16 ga. for ruffed grouse and other upland game, now days whenever I am headed to the field for pheasants one of these 16 ga. shotguns are in my hand. The most versatile ga. in my opinion.

A case study on how NOT to launch a new cartridge. Base it on an odd size case that never took off. Rush it to market and fumble the initial bullet offering. Cause confusion with chamber specs and roll out bad reamers. Give it an obscure name. Hard to overcome all that. I have it in a bolt gun and am a fan. And I agree it is fading fast. Saw the writing on the wall and saved all my fired brass. Great idea, lousy execution. 22ARC should be the final nail in the coffin.

You have to admire the color purple(16’s common case color) in order to be a part of the club. Also, I used to wear a watch but found myself looking at my phone for the time. The watch now resides next to my 12 gauge. Thanks for the show and the laughs.

While y’all were primarily focused on birds and small game, many people use shotguns for hogs and deer. Especially those in the southeast. We actually use dogs to run deer in SC. One of the most popular shotguns is the Belgium Browning A5’s. From the std 12 to Light Twelve to std 16 to SweetSixteen. The 16 is extremely popular because the A5’s for some reason hold a great pattern of buckshot. My dad used his SweetSixteen from 1959 to 2011 when I gave him a Belgium A5 Light 12. While there are light semiautomatic 12’s, many people still trust the 16 because of its smaller frame when walking through thickets. Keep in mind, our idea of thickets is wwwwaaaayyyyy different than many areas of the country. Our thickets, if you can see 10ft, it’s fairly open.

I shot sporting clays once with my father’s (now mine) 1960s Browning Sweet Sixteen A5 made in Belgium. It functioned flawlessly, but I just don’t want to risk dinging it up. I have 12's and a 20 and I would love a quality 28, but a 16 has never crossed my mind as getting ammo for it in the US really sucks after about mid-70's. Of course here we are and its making waves again. If I am gonna add another gauge to the collection, I have an uncontrollable urge for a 28! I love my O/U's and when it comes to hunting with a shotgun, they are the ones I reach for first. There is just something about the fit, feel and balance in a O/U that words in the English language just cant quite describe fully. I kick myself in the A$$ everyday regretting I didnt get my SKB 686 in a 4 barrel set instead of just a 12 gauge when I started shooting Trap and Skeet!!! If I could only own two gauges it would be 12 and 28, hands down. I only own a 20 in a Model 12 becuase I inherited it...

I have one. I prefer making 12 ga buckshot though and that's it's one low point. Most load #4 buck in the 16, because you need to avoid close to stacked bore diameter. Also it's a lot more expensive to shoot and many places have little to none of it on the shelves. I keep mine because it was my Great grandfathers barn gun.

However we still has quite a few very nice old 16 gauge drilling floating around that is a bargain compared to similar in 12 gauge (and definitely 20 gauge).

I went to the shop for a 16g and found a driling gun that was 16x16 over a 22lr. Looked sweet, but it was too bespoke for me.

It’s tough to get any more iconic than a sweet 16 model 12.

I wear a watch, but all of mine are quartz. I also really like the 16 gauge.

I’ve owned a couple 16 gauges through the years. one single shot and one semi auto both rough guns I picked up on deals. Then had people that ended up wanting them more than me and they both found new homes. I liked the gauge but it just didn’t do anything my 12’s or 20 couldn’t.

Jim, we are weird ass birds of a feather. I also count the syllables in words as people speak. Literally wore out my canines by counting with them to ensure sentences had an even number of syllables. Nice to know I’m not alone in this bizarre behaviour… anyway, yah the 16 ga. All good! 🤦🏼

Actually , I see this gauge as a good balance between , too big and too small , BUT its most suited to being a hunting , combo gun , ie shotgun barrel & rifle barrel over & under .

A watch tells time, something the cell phone in your pocket already does.
A shotgun, even if theyre fancier than need be, cant be replaced by your cell phone.

This year, I will be hunting alone with a bow.
    Occasionally with a friend.
Next year, I will be bringing some sort of shotgun for support.
I live in British Columbia. We do have GRIZZLY bear, along with cougar and black bear.
All of which live near our town seasonally at least.
So very much in the backyard public land, when deer and moose hunting.
So I will be looking for a shotgun.
Being in Canada, I haven't found the same broad selection of over under pairings.
That said, if I could get a 16 or 20 gauge shotgun, potentially paired with a small game Ballistic round.
Perhaps something suitable for coyote. (many people use 22lr for coyote?)
I would feel as if I have one support for anything the bow is less suited for.
That said, if I could get a deer cartridge over a bear gauge under
    I'd be very happy.
I suppose that's one purpose for shotgun buckshot and slugs.
    Versatility.
Would you feel confident, versus Black Bear or Bison,
    With a 16 gauge?

The 16 Gauge is probably as close as one is likely to come to a do all shotgun caliber that don't overstay its welcome as to recoil.
