Welcome to the sad but beautiful (small) oeuvre of Nick Drake.
He was helplessly unsuccesful (also due to his shy nature) during his lifetime, but then became super hip in 'indie' circles in the late 1990s/early 00s (which probably was my scene as a student 😳).
I have to admit I had a bit of a suspicion this would be something for Lex.

Thanks so much for this request, Murdock. Nick had such special vocals and sound. Unfortunately, short-lived and like other artists, appreciated more after death. I’d have to fact check these artists, but I’ve heard the list includes: Van Gogh, Monet, Poe, Kafka, Emily Dickinson, Vermeer, Bach - appreciated more after death. I have been a fan of Nick Drake for fifty years. I have been to Tamworth in Arden to pay my respects. A life ended too early. RIP Nick. You still bring joy to my life.
Andy, did you know that you can order his complete set of work from his family? I ordered them in the late eighties/early nineties on CD , having had the available albums years before then and wanted all of his works. Unfortunately I don't have the address anymore but I'm sure you could find it online if you need it. It's rare to run into someone who has been listening to Nick Drake for as long as myself! Nick Drake probably has the greatest gulf between his popularity during his lifetime - he sold only a few thousand copies of his three albums - and his influence on generations of artists that came later. The cut you listened to is from his second album. This album is his most "pop" work. His first album, "Five Leaves Left" is mostly small combos (along with some amazing orchestration on a few songs). His final album, "Pink Moon" is almost all just him playing guitar with no other instrumentation; some of the songs are just fragments, others almost like nursery rhymes. He died from an overdose of antidepressants shortly after it was released.
The common elements in all his work are his ghostly, calm voice, his unique style of fingerpicking, and his shy, quizzical lyrics about watching the world from the outside. All of these come together in his song "Northern Sky": it is as beautiful as music gets.

His Mom said it was an accidental overdose. He was drinking and took his prescribed meds twice by mistake.

Thank you for doing this. Nick Drake died in 1974 age 26 from an overdose of antidepressants, possibly by mistake. He is now a cult figure but because of his aversion to live performing he didn't get well known at the time. At The Chime Of A City Clock and Riverman will put a spell on you that will never fade. Absolutely lovely reaction guys!

Nick Drake and John Martyn were great friends. John Martyn was helping Nick to fight his depression and wrote ‘Solid Air’ for Nick. It would be great if you could react to this , it is a great song in its own right and it also gives you an insight to Nick Drake.
Yeah, John Martyn. Certainly something to request in the future. I only didcovered him after Nick Drake, but would now say I'm an even bigger fan of John Martyn than Drake.
A lot of his lyrics speak to me on a deeply emotional level. And the music is just out of this world. His guitar playing could even impress Nick ;-)
Seconded, Nick suffered badly from stage fright. Being unable to promote his music (and whilst his sister was becoming a well known actress) and whilst his contemporaries like John were getting more successful, this led to bouts of severe depression. His family and friends (such as John Martyn) tried to help but he died of an overdose. John continued his progression from folk singer to singer/songwriter to (in his own mind, at least) rock god and left a huge legacy of songs and performances, never reaching mainstream fame because of his rebellious nature, meaning he preferred independent record production to the trials and tribulations of promotion by a mainstream record label.
Quite unlike his friend, John was a natural passionate performer (and entertainer) and John’s live performances would sell out very quickly. His tribute to Nick Drake, ‘Solid Air’ is a good place to start, but you’ll discover lots of excellent performances of John’s on YT.
Love Nick Drake who I got into after hearing John Martyns Solid Air and learning who is was written for/about. You should definitely do a reaction to John Martyns Solid air, and Northern Sky by Nick Drake.
I first heard of John Martyn from a ´Northern` British friend, after I played him Nick Drake (he never heard of him). He said Nick Drake reminded him of John Martyn.

Thank you so much for this reaction. The song is of great personal sentiment. My big sister introduced me to it in 1972 after hearing it on her new double-album Island Records sampler called "Bumpers" (released 1970). I went out and bought the album Bryter Layter (I still have it). Sadly, my sister passed in 2014, aged just 61. She was a huge influence on my life. It's difficult for me to listen to Nick Drake these days. Nick made just 3 albums in his short lifetime with virtually no commercial success. He fell into a depression and his third and final album, Pink Moon, is reflective of his state of mind at the time. He has a southern English accent, by the way. Love and best wishes from the north of England.
There are many things that can be said about Nick Drake's songs. The most evident is that his music is sad,haunting,brilliant and beautiful.

This is the first song I ever heard by Nick Drake ( from a sampler for Island Records ) -- was immediately hypnotized by it . ( That was when he was still alive ) -- he didn't sell that many records in his time. Many decades later a Volkswagen commercial had one of his songs in the background , Pink Moon - and from that song he gained a cult following that continues to grow . His vocals and guitar playing are extraordinary , I would categorize his music as ' beautiful melancholy '

Nick Drake made some of the most beautiful folk music in my opinion. Unfortunately, he died much too young. Of his songs, “Pink Moon” gets a lot of love, but I think “Northern Sky” is my favorite.

The band America were fans of Nick Drake and recorded a song in 1975 called "Daisy Jane", which they say was partially inspired by this song. It doesn't sound anything like this, but it's a good tune as well. I also suggest "At the Chime of a City Clock". It's hypnotic, one of the most beautiful things I've heard.

Welcome to the beautiful world of Nick Drake. You’ve likely heard Pink Moon and maybe Black Eyed Dog used in commercials, TV, and movies. He’s quite well known to real fans of acoustic and folk, but not to the mainstream at all and as others have said he only achieved popularity long after he passed. And he’s influenced many musicians, particularly with his use of open tunings. His song Fruit Tree (from his first album) is quiet and sad but really lovely. To hear the real beauty of his guitar and voice try something from the Pink Moon album like the title song or Things Behind the Sun. Most of his songs are quite short so it would be easy to do two at a time.
Also Fruit Tree has the hauntingly prophetic line 'They'll all know that you were here when you're gone.' 😢

That he influenced other musicians only adds to the importance of his
Music and the Enduring Legacy of his Heartfelt Songs.
His first record had some pretty heavy string arrangements, a bit too sweetened; then there's this record, which has some fairly dense band arrangements and some simpler stuff. Some amazing collaborators (Richard Thompson and John Cale on the same record??) , and Pink Moon was solo acoustic guitar and voice. Drake used non-standard tunings and was able to capitalize on odd atmostpheric voicings with his fingerpicking. A huge, huge talent, died super young.
Speaking of Nick Drake and other artists who never quite hit the big time for one reason or another, I suggest Big Star. They were an early '70s band with great songwriting, singing, and production, but they literally started to self-destruct before their first album was even completed, and their record label failed to promote them properly. Some really great stuff, though, including "Ballad of El Goodo", "Thirteen", and "Back of a Car". The song by them most people have heard is "In the Street", which served as the theme to That '70s Show.

Sad story of this man. I urge you to check it out. Reminds me of a combination of Gordon Lightfoot and James Taylor...so smooth and mellow and the orchestrations are beautiful.

Nick Drake is a phenomenal artist, and despite his relatively (compared to other artists) small but very dedicated following, I think he still remains very under appreciated. All of his music is incredible, but I think his album _Pink Moon_ is my favourite. Completely barebones (pretty much just him and his guitar) and soul bearing. I would really recommend checking more of his music out; His songs Pink Moon, Place To Be, Road, and Which Will are some really beautiful ones.

And as Lex mentioned, it's something you can listening to on a Saturday morning...so, I strongly recommend that you listen to the album Pink Moon on a calm Saturday night and let yourselves drift away (no drugs necessary...in my opinion...well, I've never had to take any) to that soft voice and guitar, with interesting tunings. I hope you do this and enjoy the experience...you deserve it. Thanks for your channel.

Nick Drake’s music is amazing, he is up there with my favourite “singer-songwriters” (Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Townes Van Zandt) even though he only put out 3 albums. He was just THAT good. A sad story but he left us with a legacy that will never die as long as people are listening to music.

OMG you have stumbled across another of my top 10 desert island albums! The whole album was way ahead of its time. When I was going to high school I listened to an indie radio station called WHFS in Bethesda Maryland and the early morning DJ was named Dianne and she played Bryter Layter as her intro theme song every morning at 6am as I woke up groggy getting ready for school. Bryter Layter is one of two instrumentals (not counting the "Intro" to the album) that featured Nick on guitar and Lyn Dobson playing flute. A great way to welcome a new day. The album was produced by Joe Boyd who also produced a lot of the Fairport Convention's early stuff. Some of those guys play on this album too!
My favorite song on this album is Northern Sky with John Cale on celeste. So many other great songs too... One of these things first, At the chime of a city clock, Poor Boy.....!!!!!
All your other followers can give you the tragic history and trivia about Nick Drake and just how great he was. My favorite song of his is Fruit Tree. He only really had 3 great albums but I think this one was his best.

Great song. I know that my request isn't the typical 'go to'--song as an introduction (people probably would mostly chose "Pink Moon" or "Riverman"), but it was one of the first Drake songs to catch my attention 🙈🤷♂️

Nick drake is the most influential singer songwriter ever!! I discovered him in 1975 and his music changed my life forever! He influenced elton John, REM, and so many other bands. He continues to be a major influence today. There are so many cover videos on TH-cam!! He only recorded three excellent sounding albums. It's a sin that for the most part he is forgotten. His music was used by Volkswagen, various movies and tv shows as well as AT&T to name but a few examples. You might want to cover more of his music! He's a gem ho made timeless music!!😀

Nick Drake was a genius. Sadly he died too young. I recommend his song "The river man".
That's a great one. Ditto 'Cello Song' and 'Black dog' possibly a reference to his fragile mental condition. The anti-depressant's of his era were famously brutal to the psyche in comparison to more modern 'medications'. He may have been a stranger to the genuine benefits of hash, who knows?
Thank you for this! Love your channel. This immediately shot me back to a memory years ago when I worked in a psychiatric unit of a nursing home. One of our beloved passed and for some reason while driving to and away from her funeral service I felt it appropriate to play this song on repeat. A sad memory but a beautiful one. Thank you for giving a new, positive memory to one of my favorite songs.

Way back in 1969 I was lucky enough to see Nick perform, at a local rugby club, not that I played rugby. Nick was the supporting act, he was very shy and nervous, he never spoke, only sang and played, about five or six songs, and was gone, without a word. The band he was supporting, was Genesis, so I got to see Nick Drake, Genesis, with Peter Gabriel on vocals, all for the price of a couple of beers. Rob Jones

Hey guys, great video and so cool that you are getting into Nick Drake. He is utterly amazing with full band, orchestra or just him and his guitar. Much like Joni he can make you ecstatic or cry like a baby. Sadly a fragile person who had serious problems with depression and shyness. He had the good fortune of being helped by great musicians like Richard Thompson and Fairport Convention. If you look for the song Pink Moon I'll bet you'll recognize it. There are documentaries on him too. Lots of love.

It’s hard to imagine someone in their early 20s writing lyrics so dripping with such world weary resignation as:

Nick Drake was part of the British folk-rock and singer-songwriter scene of 50 years ago, as was- for a time - a young American musician touring the UK, learning traditional folk songs (including ‘Scarborough Fair’) and hanging out in the clubs and small venues of London, soaking up the “new” sounds. That visiting guitar-slinger was Paul Simon!
If you like Nick Drake (and of course you do), check out a contemporary of his who is still very much with us and still making amazing music: Richard Thompson. I recommend his song ‘Beeswing’ as a starting point.
'Beeswing' is gorgeous. Had the pleasure of seeing Thompson twice live. He is a great songwriter with a very dry humour.
What's great about him (besides his obvious mastery of the guitar) is that you get both from him: gentle folk as well as really crunchy rockers.
Great reaction of a very influential artist, unfortunately not until after his tragic death, as someone else has said his great friend was another "doomed" artist John Martyn who I recommended on one of your other reactions.. Two more disparate people it's hard to imagine the introverted Drake, (although he did partake of vast quantities of drugs), and the hard living Martyn, who took self destruction to a whole new level. and of course Sandy Grey on John's first album was written in tribute to Nick Drake but that was unknown to John who hadnt even met Nick when he covered it.
Sorry I'm late to this reaction, but it's a joy to see you loving and responding to Nick Drake in real time... as many people have already said, his discography is really (and sadly) small, but it's just perfect... in contrast to the lives we all live today, it's worth pointing out that literally NO video footage exists of Nick performing, which is quite amazing really. Apparently a local TV news show in England shot a piece about him, but it's been lost and never seen since...
Nick Drake is a legend (but sadly not in is time)... everything the guy recorded in his brief life is mandatory listening imo. Unparalleled brilliance.

Cello Song is the first cut on the Way to Blue compilation, which I strongly recommend. It captivated me in about 5 seconds. I can’t think of any other artist that mesmerized me immediately like that.
He’s one of the progenitors of what I’d call “whispercore.” A lot of people compare him to Donovan but Donovan was much more whimsical and confident in style. Drake was moody, contemplative, wistful and melancholy. But you immediately hear the talent in his fingers. His picking was SO crisp! Very well articulated.
Hazey Jane II is actually a much better song and introduction to Nick Drake, but still a great song. Also, Northern Sky is fantastic - you've probably heard it on a movie soundtrack or three without even knowing it.

There was somewhat of a Nick Drake renaissance in the mid to late 90s for sure: finally we had some great tribute concerts, some in NYC, some in UK, some even in Nick's
hometown, I went to one at BAM in Brooklyn around 1997, and a bunch of good books came out on Nick by then, and a bit later. Finally he seemed to be gaining the
recognition that had surely eluded him in life, sadly. His music though wasn't precisely mainstream for his era, but I think Nick recognized that. A lot of artists' albums
took years or decades to finally sell. Just ask poor Big Star!

Nick Drake's music lives in a special place. So glad you two have discovered him. It's so cool/perceptive that you said his music could belong on the soundtrack of "This Is Us"...because it does! Nick Drake's song "Northern Sky" featured on one of the episodes in Season One. Love that you guys are sharing your journey with us. Keep it coming!

Always appreciate good folk music. Seems to touch emotion when well performed. In the "prog-folk" genre you'd do well to check out the Canadian band Harmonium's first release Harmonium and from the US Shawn Phillips. Perhaps the song "Swwfhmatsitaykilybbigth" (acronym for a very long song title). Great stuff.
It was wonderful to watch your new discovery. I two reacted the same way. His music now lives on in our hearts and minds forever.
Wow, you're doing Nick Drake! Nick was an amazing talent, but so extremely shy never got famous beyond a small circle in UK. Dream Academy did a song called "Life In A Northern Town" (early 80's ?) about learning of his death. Check out the soundtrack of film "Serendipity" or his songs; Northern Sky, and Pink Moon. He reminds me of my younger brother, in that they seemed to live on a different plane of existence.
