Annie Haslem has a five octave range, the best in prog rock male or female. Camp on the bass and Tout on the keys, this band is all kinds of great. Orchestral prog at it's best.

For me the best music of Renaissance is "Song of Scheherazade". Have some of the most beautifull piano parts i ever heard.

Other songs to try: Can You Understand, Carpet of the Sun, Black Flame, Flood At Lyons, Day of the Dreamer, And at some point Song of Scheherazade. Glad you enjoyed it. Get some rest.

Annie Haslam the greatest female voice in music. Their first 4 albums are all fantastic.Prologue, Ashes are Burnng, Turm of the Cards and Scherrezade.
I will check more out for sure by them... her voice completely enchanted me beyond belief. I listened to the studio for better quality and it was just amazing..
'Novella' and 'A Song For All Seasons' are just as good, I'd say.

Renaissance were HUGE in the Northeast in the 70's. That is, the New York City, New Jersey, Philadelphia area. Renaissance and Genesis are the only groups I saw in concert 3 times, among the many concerts I saw in the 70's. Of the best female voices of the 70's there was Annie Haslam, Karen Carpenter, Stevie Nicks, and Ann Wilson of Heart. Lots of great songs including Mother Russia, I Think Of You, Can You Hear Me?, and the monumental Song Of Scheherazade. Great reaction!
I'm from that area too! I asked my girlfriends aunt today if she had ever heard of them (she's a big music head too) and she said she had! But she had never heard of Yes.. kinda weird lol
One of my favorite bands from back when. Annie's voice is marvelous! K highly recommend "Black Flame", "Mother Russia", and "Carpet of the Sun".
Everyone keeps mentioning mother russia so I will more then likely do that one next 😉 they were all amazing!
The live studio version of "Can you understand" is awesome
They are one of the leading symphonic progressive rock bands with immense talent and imagination. This is one of the all time best songs of it’s kind! Annie Haslam has a 5 octave range voice. Try these songs; Carpet of The Sun, Ocean Gypsy, Midas Touch, and At The Harbour!I was lucky enough to see them at The Bottom Libe in NYC back in the early 1980’s. They were amazing!. Jon Camp was a world class bass guitar player.
I definitely see why they are so beloved. Her stage presence paired with that set of pipes is one of a kind. Throw in an amazing instrumental backing and you get this! And it was just a live recording from the 70s and it still sounded amazing lol
At the Harbour is probably under appreciated and lesser known, but one of my favorites.

Saw Renaissance live about 1977. It was the only big concert I ever went to where I had front row center seats. Annie Haslam was standing directly in front of me. And yes, her voice was pure and immaculate. Fantastic show, fantastic band. Blessings.
I love all Renaissance albums, each is magnificent but this was the first I bought and it holds a very special place in my heart. I saw them open for Gentle Giant in 1976 and was totally captivated by the angelic enchanting beautiful Annie Haslam. Their bassist stood out as well. Though RENAISSANCE deserves all the praise it gets another less appreciated early female led Prog innovators at the time was CURVED AIR with Sonja Kristina. Both bands reunited in 2K in some form,

OMG, Lee, you've never heard them!!! Annie is one of the best female voices ever. Camps bass is top tier. You have a lot to enjoy. He didn't do his solo in this recording, but the Live at Carnagie Hall LP has a STUNNING bass solo, and the best ending version of this song recorded.
Most of their music includes full orchestration. Truly classical prog rock.

@@L33Reacts Renaissance closes all their concerts with this song, and it is one of my favorites. But this isn't representative of their body of work. Most of their music is symphonic, and lifts passages or themes from actual classical music in some cases. All of that is excellent. And I don't mean they borrow to the extent there isn't much that is solely their own. No, not at all. But ashes are burning is just very different from what most listeners familiar with the group know them for. They are always worth the time invested to listen to them. They can be lyrically dark at times. So they don't generate the positive vibe you love to surf from Yes. But they are off the charts musically, especially if you like classical instruments. And I don't think any prog rock bassist has ever played better with an Orchestra than Jon Camp. As I understand it that's far trickier than people realize. I'd say Renaissance tells great stories, whereas Yes takes you on epic journeys. Nothing wrong with either. Enjoy.
@@olias056 The 1977 Albert Hall version is my favorite - a couple of sections are a little over-extended but the unique selling point is a great one-off vocal/bass duet in the first half.
Their " Northern lights ' song timeless. Annie Haslam peerless.
My favourite 70s band. As a small trivia fact: this is a very influential band for Opeth and Mikael Akerfeldt, and particularly he deems "A song for all seasons" the most epic song he's ever heard.

Her voice enraptured me in just this strange place of being fascinated and a little afraid at the same time 🤣 I didn't know what I was hearing! So powerful... and still soft.
I would recommend for you to listen to this and other songs also in their studio version. It's perfect. And the sound quality in those live performances are not always the best. They definitively can bring it live.
Also highly recommend their 'Scheherazade and Other Stories' album. A masterpiece. But also this album.
(Also want to add that her voice maybe reminds you of ABBA. It reminds me of them.)
I will definitely do a studio version for the next video I do for them. You could tell a lot of the sound wasn't coming through do to the recording but it still sounded amazing

Annie is not only the singer, but his voice is an instrument like the others.
I saw them warm up for Steve Hackett's band in 2010. They were great. Tom Brislin was their 2nd keyboardist. He played the orchestral parts. He toured with Yes in 2000 and currently plays with Kansas.
I saw them live in 1976, I think. Annie just went crazy with Ashes' Are Burning and brought the house down!
The studio version has an awesome guitar solo from Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash. He also appears on a live version recorded by the BBC. Well worth checking out. Annie Haslam has covered some Yes songs as well.
I listened to it earlier today and that solo blew me away! I wish it was in this version. But I honestly really enjoyed this ending too..
It is an astonishing performance. Many, many things are perfect about it, especially the bass, keys, but her voice at the end! How did she do that? Amazing.
Prog with British folk roots, is how they have always seemed to me.
The bass tone you noticed is probably the Ricky (Ricki?) sound that line of basses are known for. Stringy percussive stereo outputs. It cuts through.

There is an immense amount of talent in this band including Annie, Please consider Betty Thatcher who writes the lyrics and that this band is a Team.
So psyched you got to react to Renaissance for us. Annie Haslam along with the various incarnations of the group over the years were incredible. Got to see them in concert in '74 at the NYC Academy of Music and Annie's beautiful voice filled the hall and captivated all of us.

Annie Haslam is a prog goddess. The great majority of people asked to name a female prog vocalist will immediately name Annie. She studied opera when she was young and she has a five-octave vocal range. Many female prog vocalists have emerged since the 70s but none quite have the range, the unique timber and the grace of Annie Haslam. 🌷❤🌻

LOVE this tune. The Carnegie Hall Live version is my favorite...extends to 23 min. There is a Brazilian couple (Fleesh) that has covered it and they did a great job.

Another great prog band. Nice to see you discover them. My favorite album by them is Turn the Cards. You are right not much other prog bands in the 70' had female musicians. A shame in a way.
I saw them in Philly I think 5 times and one of my favorite bands along with Gentle Giant and now The Warning!

Annie's vocal pyrotechnics are a totally different vibe, and while both versions are excellent, the more ethereal vocals as witnessed in this video is just so amazingly beautiful.

Saw them live in 79, Manchester UK. Incredible. (I won't bother mentioning Annie has a five-octave range because others have said that.)
If I understood your question about tabs correctly...
The tabs (they're called "stops") on an organ changes the pipe "type" being played, usually measured by length and how the sound is generated like "32ft Diapasons", "Reeds", they change the range and tonal quality. The trick being that you can have more than one, and you can attach different tabs to each keyboard (and pedal board) so they play different sounds.
I mean it's no different to what you can do now with electronics, but the original ones are mechanical and insanely complex. The one in Notre Dame, Paris, has 8000 pipes and was originally built in 1733. Then, of course, you have to pump air through them to make them play...
Annie Haslam reminds me of another Ann from the seventies. Ann Wilson of Heart has a similar voice, maybe not the full range of Annie, but their tone and delivery are outstanding. Had "Turn of the Cards" and "Schereazade" back then.
The band had a flute player,who for some reason dropped out, Annie took over the parts with her voice
Renaissance represents the more orchestral and feminine side of 70's prog. Despite John Tout's impressive keyboard setup he was mainly a piano player who only occasionally incorporated organ or synth into his playing. And guitarist/songwriter Mickey Dunford rarely played electric guitar, although that changed in the late 70's as their style had to shift to suit the times. So really their sound was Annie's soaring operatic voice, the rhythm section and piano. That's why they often partnered with an orchestral ensemble to flesh out the arrangements.
Another fun fact about Renaissance: they were founded by former Yardbirds Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, who only lasted a couple albums before the whole thing was blown up by the management and this lineup (often called Mk II) was put together.
Re: female singers in prog bands, someone already mentioned Sonja Kristina from Curved Air, who started a year or two before Annie and this lineup of Renaissance. The original 1969 lineup of Renaissance did include Keith Relf's sister Jane, although she was more a backing singer. There was also another woman named Binky Cullom who sang in Renaissance pre-Annie, but that lineup only lasted a year or so and is considered transitional. So you can see how female singers have always been part of Renaissance's DNA. Other than those, I can think of Judy Dyble who sang with Fairport Convention and the proto-King Crimson group. Some also consider the great British folk rock bands Fairport, Steeleye Span, and Pentangle to cross over into prog, and they all featured great female singers.
I saw this group live too! Please check out Turn of The Cards, Things I Don't Understand. Renaissance is a Great band. I still have my copy from the year it was released of Turn of The Cards!

Check out their magnum opus Song of Scheherazade from the '75 album Scheherazade and Other Stories. It's incredibly good. Annie Haslam could sing like an angel. You know it's prog when there's white satin being worn, it's always a dead giveaway. If you like this you'll like Dabsong Conshirtoe pt1 by Caravan from their album Cunning Stunts, also '75. That was a good year for vintage prog, Relayer, Shine On etc.
"Can You Hear Me?" is another amazing song by them. If you want a shorter song, check out "Northern Lights". As far as other prog bands with female lead vocals, check out Curved Air.
Curved Air were another prog band around same period with a classy female front singer ! Live from Carnegie Hall is a great Renaissance album to pick up on.

Hi, You would have loved it in the UK between 1968-74, the height of prog. At this time the band were considered Prog/Folk/Rock along with bands like the Strawbs, Comus, Fairport Convention and Pentangle, who had a jazz rhythm section. Still with you- love your reactions.

You need to hear some Curved Air. Great girl singer. Seems like almost all the girl singers from the 70's sound like voice music teachers. They enunciate so clearly.

Another great female fronted prog band you should check out are Curved Air with Sonja Kristina on lead vocals. I'd suggest Metamorphosis from their album Air Cut. You won't be disappointed. Great vocalist(though perhaps not in Annie Haslam's league) and brilliant musicians. Really enjoying your reactions Lee. Keep up the good work bro.

When you have the time, check out their live performance of this piece at Carnegie Hall. There's no video, sadly, but wait until you hear how high she sings near the end. The performance is 23 minutes long. It's one incredible performance, and I'm told the bass player, just like Geddy Lee, was heavily influenced by Chris Squire, and played a Rickenbacker Bass. Also, she sings Turn of the Century with Steve Howe on guitar. if only Annie and Jon had performance together on some YES music. If only.

The only female singer that I can think of from this time period is Jenny Haan from the killer band Babe Ruth, check out the album First Base by them, you won't be disappointed.
Other females? Maybe Grace Slick in Jefferson Airplane if that is US prog? Tina Turner and the two girls from the Ikettes was singing for Frank Zappa. Kate Bush might pass as prog (maybe to late), Sally Oldfield with brother Mike, Clare Torry on Dark side of the moon. It depends on definitions. There must be more. Nina Hagen is later and rather punk. P.P. Arnold?

I think what is "different" is that it feels like all the musicians are classically trained, almost like listening to a symphony but with contemporary instruments. You pointed out the grand piano. WHO these days uses a grand piano in popular music??
There are many versions live better. This is a good version for the sound but it’s studio. The live version some up to 20 minutes are amazing! The studio version with electric guitar of Andy Powell of Wisbine ash is unique. I remember seing Renaissance in Montreal in 75 in an old theater and just was totally smash by the live version of Ashes are burning. One of the top 5 concerts of prof I ever saw . Than I saw them 3 or 4 times more! Always amazing!
Wow this one surprised me you hit it. I have been a listener of them for years. Two members were previously in the Yardbirds. (Keith Relf died from electrocution from his guitar). One member included John Wetton later to join King Crimson. They later incarnated into a band called Illusion.

So far as I know Wetton never got past the audition stage - certainly there seem to be no live (let alone studio) recordings with him (or Frank Farrell for that matter).

I've been a Renaissance fan for many years. You asked about prog bands fronted by women. Most of my favorite bands have been called progressive at one time or another, but I still don't really know what it means, and I am not even sure there is any real agreement. Two other bands from the early seventies (and beyond) come to my mind, Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. I have always considered both bands folk rock, but, perhaps your fan base will have more to say. I don't know Fairport well. Steeleye Span will do everything from acapella to mainstream mild rock. The song, from the same era, that reminds me of Renaissance the most would be Thomas the Rhymer.

@@L33ReactsAndy Powell from Wishbone Ash guested on the studio with an amazing and awesome electric solo. That solo was never performed live when I saw them several times in the 70's. There's some great BBC TV footage if you can find it from 1977 I believe.
The guitarist (Mike Dunford, who passed away a few years ago), usually only played acoustic and he was their only guitarist. Most of the times during this song, there would be an incredible extended bass solo.

at times she doesn't use much vibrato, almost a pure bell tone.

Another female voice that deserves a listen is Renaissance first Singer, Jane Relf , sister of Keith Relf, from the Yardbirds.
She can be heard in a band from the 70's called "Illusion". I don't know her vocal range, but a beautiful voice.
