    Nick Drake's acoustic guitar playing is top notch. It's such a perfect compliment to his soft voice.

It pleases me to no end to watch subsequent generations of listeners discover his wonderful music. On to side 2!!🎵❤️🎵

    This is my favourite song by Nick Drake. I considered learning how to play it but thought, to hell with it, because 1. It sounds difficult [even though I'm up to a musical challenge], and 2. I'd prefer to just listen to the song. I don't understand why he didn't get the recognition he deserved and it's sad that he couldn't continue. But here we are listening to him anyway, thanks to people like you, Daniel. We love you Nick and your music is greatly appreciated and loved. 💜

    Ah, one of my favourite Nick Drake songs, Things Behind the Sun ❤️ Beautiful and painful, hopeful and melancholy. Honestly, if people yeet out because they think there’s too much Nick Drake, that’s probably for the best. You have a unique channel that is still growing, and there will be 11 people who will find your channel, love what you do, and take their place. As Nick said, people don’t always like what you have to say. But say it anyway.

    Things Behind The Sun is one o' Nick's best. I'm glad to see you continue this venture. Please don't stop until you've heard all 3 o' his original albums in their entirety: Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter 'n Pink Moon. Nick is a totally unique soul whose music is transformative. I'm forever grateful to Leo O'Kelly for turnin' me on to Nick Drake, Roy Harper 'n Planxty. His band Tir Na Nog is in the same league.

    Nick Drake takes a certain 'sensitivity' and maybe a bent towards 'beautiful melancholy' , most people won't hear it - but for those that do - his music is incredibly rewarding , also nobody plays guitar like him , truly unique . I was around when he was still alive , ironic that a German Volkswagen commercial started a new era for Nick. Hope 'Stranger Things' can bring another Brit into the North American spotlight , namely Kate Bush .

  • @IDLERACER
    @IDLERACER 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    With this song, the music is as important as the lyrics. It's about the Yin and Yang ☯Of minor and major. There are two lengthy minor key sections, interrupted twice by a couple of more optimistic sounding major key bridges (the parts beginning "Take your time and you'll be fine..." and "Open up the broken cup..."). Drake was always fastidious about making sure the sentiment of the words, matched the tone of the music. Can't wait to hear you feast your ears on the likes of "At The Chime Of A City Clock" from the previous album. 🕰

  • @Hartlor_Tayley
    @Hartlor_Tayley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This song is so real I can taste it. The way the lyrics are worded is so engaging and even mystical. People and their baseless hubris is painful to be around. The world was far too noisy and chaotic for Nick to get noticed. I read he smoked a lot of hash which probably helped his mood and gave him some sense of sanctuary, it also probably increased his feelings of alienation and paranoia. It’s all in the songs. Incredible artist. Thank you for a great reaction.

  • @e.nowbodhi144
    @e.nowbodhi144 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    IMO on the vocal he doesn't say "don't be too wise," it's not a call to ignorance as bliss
    he says "don't do wise"
    AFAIK that's an English expression for children who claim in situations to be smarter than their elders
    "the farmers and the fun" is a cannabis reference, as in "The Thoughts of Mary Jane" on Five Leaves Left... this is probably Nick's densest and most direct song in a lot of ways, really telling us how he feels about the creeps of the record business especially
    I guess Jerry Gilbert (he's the "them that stare," or one of them, in that industry) has an itch he can't scratch somewhere tonight

    Appreciate your mini rant on critics, even though I think *some* of them can serve a useful purpose. I remember ages ago reading a Rolling Stone concert review of a favorite band, where it was immediately clear that the reviewer wasn't a fan of that band's music in the first place (!). How much more utterly useless could a review of their live show be?
    Having said that, if you can find a critic or two with tastes and opinions you can respect and trust, they can turn you on to something you might otherwise not check out. My best example is when you react to something that I've somehow missed - I'll definitely check it out because I'm familiar with your taste in music and your openness to all kinds of different genres. I've got a new appreciation for Nick Drake based solely on listening to your reactions to him - always knew of him, but never really sat down to listen before now. So thanks!

    The depression and suffering comes through on this songs. What I love about this music is that there is still HOPE. To me, that is a very mature outlook on life.
    Also, the last lines in the song reflect this: "People around your head" are critics or criticism/doubt in general. But the "movement in you brain" makes you go out and perform/do your thing even in spite of knowing you will get wet. You know you will get dumped on...but you do it anyway!!! Legit lyrics.

  • @benoitdesmarais2948
    @benoitdesmarais2948 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Critics have their own sensibilities, agendas, and the fun is in to find critics that have yours, or are so opposite that they also become a reference in that you won't want to watch, listen to or read what they love, cause you know you won't based on their previous criticism. A real critic is somebody that does more that thumbs up/thumbs down. A real discussion about art goes beyond the like/dislike statements. Critics - in the pre-internet world - were valuable filters, bringing you attention on new artists. Sadly, Nick Drake never found a critic to really champion him and let people know about his art, and Drake was too timid to toot his own horn.
