    If you still have questions book an online parent consultation here: drlaurenbaker.clientsecure.me/request/service **clarification: moving towards hands/knees is most common to START at 6-9 months, but could be up to 11 months to crawl independently (9-11 months of independent crawling is within normal range), however, best to know if something else is going on if a kiddo is not crawling by 9-10 months on their own.

    I am a nanny and very motivated to try these exercises for the baby I am going to take care off, she is 10 months old and still not crawling. The other babies I have taken care of before were mostly doing on their own when it was time but I also helped them, encouraged them on standing and walking mostly while they were already sitting up and able to crawl when I started.

      Tsering, what an AMAZING nanny you are -- that family and babe are lucky to have you! If you have any questions please don't hesitate to add more comments as crawling is a tough cookie to crack sometimes with kiddos who have tightness in their trunks (which may be impacting a little's ability to crawl).

    Great video. Thank you!
    Any pointers for a 9 month old girl that locks her lower legs straight and won’t put her arms down when attempting to assuming the positions shown in the video? She usually screams and cries. Every time she’s placed on her tummy she is very adept at rolling to her back. She will sit unassisted for about 30 minutes at a time. She’s able to stand and support herself against a stationary object but hates to crawl.

      Hi Rick! Thanks for your comment. I had kind of a longer answer so I filmed a response for you to give a little more of a mini masterclass on crawling that was more specific to your situation. Hi Lauren, my 10 month old boy is very desperate to crawl, but he has very flexible hips and cannot get up onto his knees because his knees automatically just go straight out to the side like frog legs when he tries to get on his knees. Will these exercises help for him, or will he need additional help? Thank you so much!

    • @DrLaurenBaker
      @DrLaurenBaker  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Brigitte! Thanks so much for your comment. I apologize I am a bit behind but hopefully this will still help if needed. You will want to stabilize his hips like shown in the thumbnail photo, if you are stabilizing his hips by placing your knees around his knees then he will be able to utilize the hip strength without having to also fight gravity (for the hips). There are also a few other things that will help: I really love hip helpers for this exact situation and recommend them often (and also have their sizing kit for use for my kiddos I see in person): www.hiphelpers.com/ -- you also may want to go through the Crawling Checklist - drlaurenbaker.com/blog/learning-to-crawl-checklist to make sure there are no skill gaps when it comes to crawling as often babies who are super flexible might also struggle with things like going from their back into a sitting position which is a precursor skill to crawling. If he is not crawling on his own by 11 months, that is when we recommend being seen by a pediatric physical therapist.
      If you have additional questions, you can schedule an online parent consultation, all consultations are 60 minutes 1:1 via video on a secure platform and can be scheduled here at anytime: drlaurenbaker.clientsecure.me/request/service

    My baby is 6 months old he can get up on all fours and rocks back and forth since he was 5 months old. He ends up moving around on the floor by pushing with his arms.

      He also can get up into a plank position and downward dog position lol

    • @DrLaurenBaker
      @DrLaurenBaker  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Sam! Yay for getting onto all fours. Sometimes babies as early as six months can get into the position but we don’t necessarily expect them to hands and knees crawl until closer to 9-11 months. If a baby crawls earlier, that is totally fine AS LONG AS they also mastered the milestones before such as rolling in all four directions and sitting by themselves. If your baby skipped rolling in any of the four directions (both right and left for back to belly and belly to back) then make sure to grab a copy of my book Tummy Time and Learning to Roll - drlaurenbaker.com/tummy-time-and-learning-to-roll-book - while it isnt super common I have had babies who crawled without rolling and it can inhibit future milestones as well as sleep and head shape so ideal to make sure babies are doing all the things before, if they move on a bit early.
      All four rocking is developing the weight shifting needed for crawling but likely he is still developing the strength for holding all fours before moving onto full crawling which is totally age appropriate. Army or belly crawling is awesome as long as it develops into hands and knees crawling by 11 months!
      If youd like to check out the building blocks of crawling check out the crawling checklist here: drlaurenbaker.com/blog/learning-to-crawl-checklist
      I hope this helps, Lauren.

    • @DrLaurenBaker
      @DrLaurenBaker  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@samaltman2905 that is awesome, I would encourage all fours crawling a little more than standing since it's a little bit more advantageous but since they are 7 months standing won't hurt their hips because they're (more) fully developed (than 0-6 months). Enjoy this stage mama!

    i was wondering if these crawling exercises should be done after stnr reflex appears? my baby is 8 months old still stuck in landau reflex. however the stnr did not develop yet. so if i do the crawling exercises he is in pain or suffering. it is very uncomfortable to bend his knees and put weight on his arms since his default reflex is still landau. i saw that a few people have the problem, that their babies do not bend their knees.

    • @DrLaurenBaker
      @DrLaurenBaker  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi! Thank you so much for the comment. I apologize that this comment is delayed and hopefully this is still helpful. The STNR does appear at a range 6-9 months, so at 8 months (previously) I don't usually push all fours position, but I am making sure that a baby is rolling in all four directions (back to belly / belly to back over both arms) as the Landau Reflex while normal can inhibit rolling especially belly to back if we're stuck in it. I am also working on pre-crawling skills such as getting from back to sitting with support or independently, sitting independently, and progressing to pre-crawling skills such as side sitting once baby is 7 months+. I often will also help babies do supported army crawling around this age. At 8 months I do not push all fours yet if they are keeping their legs in extension, but if a baby is struggling with bending their legs at 9 months I am strategizing other options that work on the same muslces that might be more tolerated, like tall kneeling. If a baby is not crawling hands/knees by 11 months I recommend Pediatric Physical Therapy/Physiotherapy since it helps spine development, hand/eye coordination, and pre-academic skills such as reading/writing that other forms of movement do not (such as prolonged army crawling, booty scooting, or hitch crawling).

      Hi Amy! I apologize that this response is late, but my hope is that if your child has been struggling since then this will help both for crawling (which if your child did skip, should still be encouraged for the benefits it has for academic skills) and also walking etc. Here is a video I did to explain some of the reasons why this might have occurred and to help any other's whose babies might be experiencing tightness: th-cam.com/users/livel7k26Jz9JjI?si=D6DYDj61anCVrjb-

    • @DrLaurenBaker
      @DrLaurenBaker  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Enigetch, thank you so much for your comment. If a child is not crawling or standing independently/walking by this age (specifically by 11 months for crawling and 18 months for walking) we would recommend Pediatric Physical Therapy to help them gain the strength, mobility, and skills they need for crawling and walking on their own. As the other commenter mentioned, you can ask to see an alternative doctor to see if they will refer you for resources or reach out to see if Pediatric Physical Therapy or Physiotherapy is available in your area. Having someone work with your child in person is the best course of action. That being said, I understand that not everyone has access to a Pediatric PT unfortunately and that is a big reason on why this channel exists. In that case, my recommendation would be to work on the building block skills of crawling and walking (some are the same and some are different). If the child can stand with support, you can work on both, if they're unable to stand with support, then my recommendation would be to start on crawling (if they're sitting independently). Here are the checklists: Crawling Checklist - drlaurenbaker.com/blog/learning-to-crawl-checklist
      Walking Checklist - drlaurenbaker.com/blog/learning-to-walk-checklist

      Thank you so much for recommending seeking a second opinion, I absolutely agree that PT and a different Pediatrician would be helpful for this family. I do want to mention; however, that not all countries have access to PT or the level of care that a lot of us are used to, so I do always try to acknowledge this in responses and would encourage all my subscribers to have compassion for these situations as well.

      Hi Jessica, how old if your little? If they are not yet 9/10 months, then that can be normal. My baby is 9 months old 6 weeks premature so really 7.5 months. She is crawling with her right leg tucked and left leg with foot on the ground. Can these exercises help her? Does she need a physical therapist? We have been using a activity center walker and feel bad because I think thats why shes doing this. Should we not use the activity center at all until this is corrected? Thanks in advance.

    • @DrLaurenBaker
      @DrLaurenBaker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Farrah, I am really excited about this question thank you for taking the time to ask it :) a few things: you can always any time you want for literally any reason based on a concern for movement reach out to a local PT, so if any of the resources I share do not help you very quickly, that would be my next step; however, that being said, she is still very young so you have some time to work on the "hitch crawling," which is what I call the one leg out movement. usually one leg out / hitch crawling is because of trunk tightness OR hip/core weakness (sometimes both). The learning to crawl free online course here will go through hitch crawling: drlaurenbaker.com/courses so highly recommend signing up and then going through all the modules. Specifically the mobility and lower trunk/hip strengthening and core strengthening modules.
      If you have a SIT IN walker where a baby sits in a sling and can push from a seated position, yes discontinue ASAP. Same goes for any activity centers where a baby sits in a sling and is not able to push fully through both feet flat one the ground (usually they require having a platform that is elevated). Jumper would also be something I would stop if you have been using those :) -- examples with pictures of all of these things in the course so definitely make sure to check that out so it's super clear! Good luck mama, you are doing amazing and your little is going to be in an even better spot with a few little mobility and strength tweeks!

If Tummy Time is still difficult at 10 months and they are not yet rolling or sitting on their own, a Pediatric Physical Therapist or Pediatric Physiotherapist in your area will be the best support for you.

      Hi Ayesha! Thank you for the comment. At 10 months we do want to make sure that your little has all of the building blocks he needs to master crawling and we don't waste this precious time in the event that something is blocking him from moving to the next milestone, especially because 9-11 months has A LOT of milestones packed in.
      My recommendation would be to go through my free learning to crawl online course and print out the checklists to make sure that your babe has all the crawling building blocks they need, and if any are blank start there. You can also go through the modules one by one! drlaurenbaker.com/courses

      @DrLaurenBaker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Fathimas, thank you for the comment. Babies are appropriate for crawling between the ages of 9-11 months, some babies can begin to work toward crawling and all fours activities at 7-8 months, but we want to make sure they have mastered rolling from belly to back (right and left) and back to belly (right and left) -- so all four ways -- before they move onto crawling. A great way to make sure that your baby is ready for crawling is to check out the learning to crawl course (or learning to sit/roll if younger than 8 months) and go through the checklists: drlaurenbaker.com/courses [these courses are free!]

    • @DrLaurenBaker
      @DrLaurenBaker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Laura, Thank you so much for the comment. There is SO MUCH you can do and you're absolutely in the right space and doing the right thing.
      1. The biggest thing you can do if you're concerned is reach out to a local pediatric physical therapist or physiotherapist to evaluate your child and show you exactly what to work on, this is the absolute best and most valuable thing for parents to do (get early access to peds PT). If you don't have a peds PT in your area, you can always schedule an online consultation here and we can talk about all the milestones and specific exercises for those milestones that can help: drlaurenbaker.clientsecure.me/request/service
      For babies to hold themselves up in both sitting (propped sitting) and in order to transition to all fours they need upper trunk strength as well as head control strength. Babies who spend 60 minutes per day of tummy time from 3 months old are in the best spot for building that upper trunk strength. If a baby wasn't able to tolerate that or didn't have that opportunity can continue to build that upper trunk strength through the following exercises:
      - pull to sit with support at shoulders
      - side sitting for core strength
      - baby planks
      You can find all these exercises and more in the crawling playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLxYt0JBWx03QAXXe0HL5A5WnN9Htyjx4K.html
      I would additionally make sure a baby is able to roll in both directions and if not, focus on trunk rotation / rolling milestones even if they are age wise past that. Here is the rolling playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLxYt0JBWx03SHjgrAXqUkVXDgZ6Ox8lN6.html

    could you talk about the signs a baby is ready to start crawling?

    • @DrLaurenBaker
      @DrLaurenBaker  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Angie! Thanks so much for the comment. YES! Crawling typically occurs between 9-11 months but a baby can show signs of getting into the position earlier. Most babies will go from tummy into all fours and begin rocking on hands/knees to show they are ready to transition. That being said, sometimes babies only need a few tips or strategies to move onto crawling if they are 9 months and already sitting on their own. Here is my free crawling checklist that can help you figure out if there are any gaps and/or if your baby has the foundations needed to get crawling likely without difficulty: Crawling Checklist - drlaurenbaker.com/blog/learning-to-crawl-checklist

      Hi Asinonu! Thanks for the comment. Babies can start to crawl at 7 months but most babies dont start crawling until 9-11 months. At 7 months, focus on rolling in all four directions, side sitting, helping babies transition into all fours if they can tolerate it (if not thats okay, work on helping them pivot on their bellies!).
