Shuten Doji "Little Drunkard": Despite it's rather demeaning nickname, this Oni is not to be taken lightly. In terms of Yokai, few are able to rival him in pure evil. Unlike most Oni of his might, he was not born as one. He was once a human-yokai hybrid, born from a human woman, he was the son of the great Yamata-no-Orochi himself. As a child, he displayed amazing physical strength and intellect far beyond his age. While these traits were impressive, they caused all around him to alienate him. People called him Demon Child, and even his own mother abandoned him. This resulted in a deep resentment and hatred for humanity to begin welling up within him. He became an apprentice priest at Mt. Hiei, and was naturally stronger and smarter than any of his peers. Yet still, he hated them. One night, there was a festival. While everyone else was enjoying themselves and reveling in the festivities, Shuten Doji had his own fun. After getting obscenely drunk, he donned an Oni mask, and proceeded to terrorize the other priests by jumping out from the shadows. After he had he fun, he went to take the Oni mask off, only to find that he couldn't find where his face ended and the mask began. The mask had fused to his face, becoming a part of him. He fled into the mountains, hiding himself from the world, stealing food and booze to survive. His hate for mankind festered, unlocking powerful evil magics within him. His expert displays of thievery had impressed a gang of local bandits, who he decided he would teach his ways to, and form a gang of his own. He even met another like him, a Demon Child named Ibaraki Doji, who he took in and made his second in command. Over time, they all transformed into true Oni, and went on a glorious rampage in a bid to overthrow the Emperor and take control. They pillaged and razed villages to the ground, drinking the blood of and devouring noble virgins raw (Not like that, they were actually eating them. organs and everything.) Before they could secure the capitol, a group of legendary heroes led by Minamoto no Yorimitsu were able to debilitate the army of demons by gifting them with sake that had been tainted by a magical poison. Yorimitsu decapitated the Demon King Shuten Doji, yet even then, the head lived and continued to bite at it's attacker. The head of Shuten Doji was buried outside of the city, in the mountains of Oinosaka. Should the King of Oni ever resurface, a cup of the poison used to defeat him and his army can be found at Nariai-Ji temple in Kyoto.
@@darakkriess1030 Kintoki was a part of Yorimitsu's group of heros. So yes. He did have a hand in Shuten's demise, but it was Yorimitsu who dealt the final blow. At least in the version of the story that I read.
In some versions, Shuten Doji (or Douji) and the other onis were told as propaganda against the government in ancient Japan. The onis were actually humans who were called demons who defied the government officials, voiced out the pleas of the marginalized, and sought to overthrow the current rulers.
Look, I like the Touhou version of Shuten Doji and appreciate FGO's interpretation (even though I don't play) but this? This is honestly one of the most INCREDIBLE depictions of Shuten Doji I've ever seen! I love it!
This boss design is so fun. In general, Nioh 2 bosses are all memorable but Shuten Douji has the most charisma imo. He looks like the demon form of Kyo from the old manga, Samurai Deeper Kyo, his hair is alive and he breathes fire, and it’s so fun to see him raging for wine. I wish we could get more content on him.
Alright, I love Fate as much as the next guy, and I mean that I'm super huge into the series, but... Guys, come on, can we just appreciate the badass oni boss for what it is, rather than trying to compare him to the wine loli in Grand Order?
yeah not to mention Shuten-Doji by mythology itself is always been a Man, its Ibaraki-Doji who is often a woman. so while i do know fate genderbends alot of figures. shouldn't really be comparing the loli Shuten from Fate to a game where Shuten is more well mythologically accurate.
@@LordTerrantos It's a case of cultural relevancy overtaking the source material. Try looking up Astolfo on Google Images, and pretty-much every image is of his Fate counterpart; same with Edmond Dantes. Fate's kind of a double-edged sword in that regard; it's because of that series I even know about a lot of these more obscure figures in history/mythology, but it kinda overshadows them with its own portrayals in some cases.
Sometimes when he’s low on HP he will be swinging his club and eventually fall flat on the floor, allowing a free groundstab, it’s such a funny boss fight lol
Given that Shuten was in the same place as the Nine-Tails, it's safe to say that the Fox is none other than Tamamo-No-Mae. So we have have all 3 of the Great Yokai/Kijin/Demon Gods in this game.
The thing about nioh that I love is that there's a boss who screws over any typw of player, for me the sudden, slow heavy random movements this boss throws out always catches me, but other more "professional" fights are easy, like how I can fight Maria in bloodborne but not ludwig
So, in an attempt to stall for time, Koji releases the other two Great Demons, only it doesn't work out so well. Tamamo decided to just run off, and Shuten barely took the fight seriously.
Yeah, he is a pretty fun fight, to be honest. That flaming hair attack is just sick in my opinion. Kinda disappointed that ain't the yokai attack for his soul core. Some may say he's easy, but that honestly just depends on the player. In games like this, difficulty is heavily subjective. One may struggle immensely with Mezuki or Tokichiro whilst another rolls over Otakemaru or mister dual hatchets.
Alright, I'm going to catch hell for this, but I have to get it off my chest. Finally, the REAL version of Shuten Doji instead of that weird-ass lolicon! *breathes out in relief* Alright, now I feel better. Hats off to the design team on this one, especially with the flaming hair.
Yes, Abe No Seimei and Minamoto No Raiko held the seals with their spirit and body and their lifeforce and their weapon. Once those were broken, the demons were free from their imprisonment to run rampant.
This game has more variety in terms of gameplay and playstyles. There is also character customization and you can Co op missions with other players. But sekiro has a more interesting world/map design and is more visually pleasing. Depends on what you want I guess. I prefer nioh but sekiro is also really good.
