Unfortunately they haven’t eliminated their audience. Hypocritical nerds and the social media mob keep showing up regardless and then have the nerve to be shocked about how crap the finished product is.
I think I represent the everyday guy who just wants to see a god film. Topgun Maverick was a great because the people making it had passion, vision, talent, experience, and no bitterness or hatred for their audience like the woke mob do.

I can see Emily Blunt's point considering her character in 'Edge of Tomorrow' is the absolute epitome of what a well written, strong, female lead can be. She knows exactly what the level and standard should be, not this "let's just give women all the traits, powers, characteristics of men and call it a day" BS.
She was a great character in that movie. Well acted but also a well written character. Knows when she needs help and isn't afraid to ask for it, even as competent as she otherwise is.
I love that film, and I love, love, love Emily Blunt. ❤️

Sarah Connor in T and T2 is the perfect example of strong female character building done right, or Ripley in Alien, to a lesser extent. Both decades ago.
Both Sarah and Ripley go from protecting themselves in the first film to protecting a child in the second film ("don't miss with mama bear").

Everybody keeps talking about Ripley and Connor, but about Agent Starling from Silence of the Lambs and Laurna Cole from Lethal Weapon 3 & 4? They are good underrated female action characters.

So I’m a 44 year old woman… one of my fav movies of all time is “field of dreams” but according to mainstream media I shouldn’t love this movie cause I can’t “see myself” in it! I’m not a 30 something year old man who lost his dad. But I can relate to the human emotions of it. I tear up every time. Human emotion does not depend on “seeing yourself” it’s something we can all relate to. And it’s something modern movies have forgotten
There's the superficial "see myself" that goes only skin deep. It's so throw away because there is no human element or character growth underneath the flesh. It's a series of check marks that is so obvious and so robotic that most people just roll their eyes and look elsewhere for depth of concepts and feelings.
Then there's the "see myself" in terms of shared experiences. Field of Dreams touches that part that comes from sports nostalgia (baseball or softball), parent and child dynamics, and one's dreams at different stages of aging.
It wasn't my favorite movie as my school system used it every time there was a substitute teacher. Kinda soured the taste of it a bit. But damn does it stick with you due to those concepts.
And I'm a 39 year old woman so I get what you're saying. I can relate as my Dad used to play baseball with those oversized plastic ball and bat sets with me when I was little. So I know how it feels to want to share that experience of spending time with the ones you love just playing ball. I don't need a woman in Kevin Costner's shoes to know how the character is feeling.

One of my all time favorite movies is Sister Act I and II. Even though I'm neither female nor black and I'm not even a religios person. So does that mean I'm not supposed to watch these movies?
"Dances With Wolves" is probably my all-time favorite. I've never been on an isolated post at Fort Wagner or whatever, I've never tamed a wolf, and I've never been on a wagon. However, I HAVE been a fight choreographer, competitive saber fencer, actor, instructor, and I'm also a published author.
You don't have to "be" the main character of a story to resonate with their struggles.

On the Emily Blunt comment it made me think that the problem isn't that there can't be a strong female lead but that the story is made around the concept of telling the audience how strong she is.
Also the writers don't understand that strong female doesn't mean strong masculine female.
If you watch a quiet place, she is a strong female character. She is so good in that movie.
If you don't have a mini pen*s from steroid use than your not a real strong woman yo.
Emily Blunt is currently starring in The English, where she plays Lady Cornelia, who is indeed strong but also very flawed and who makes many mistakes. Watching Cornelia learning and growing and trying and failing makes the show very interesting. I just finished Season 1 and I highly recommend the show.

Isn't it a bit hypocritical that they want to keep forcing women into spaces for men, but at the same time, they want women to have their own spaces? While female comic book fans do exist, it was majority boys/men who loved comics and were passionate about caped superheroes fighting crime.
Yep it's totally hypocritical. I tried to join a illustrators group and the board consists of women and some male members but there's this constant emphasis of feminism and promoting female empowerment so much that they don't want any male members. One woman said to me she only wants to work with female artists. How is that not sexist in itself? It is. If a man said that towards a woman he'd be cancelled and fired but women get away with it.
In fandoms which were successful because of boys/male nerds ( Star wars as a prime example ) female characters were kept to a bare minimum because that audience really had no interest in them, whether it was Kenner action figures in 1980 or Hasbro's present range.... it's always the female characters that are warming pegs in shops at massively reduced prices....women don't buy them either

Man kill bill was a fantastic series and she BODIED that role so much so that we as an audience viewed her as bad ass even if she was just chewing gum

My argument is that Thanos won in Infinity War and Endgame was just a fever dream by Captain America, who couldn't accept reality, which is why it ends with him time hopping with the Infinity Stones and then going back in time to grow old with Peggy.
Now everyone sees it my way, Infinity War should've been the end of the story, its so much better than Endgame.

I liked Jessica Jones because she was physically strong, but had a serious PTSD and drinking problem. She was far from perfect and relatable.
another example of a female character done right. If she is redone by Disney+, she will have none of those issues.
Why does relatability mean good character work? Making a character relatable liberates them of nuance and coolness factor. The average movie goers is just a unkept, primitive and unintelligent nihilist who don’t take anything seriously. We don’t always need underdog stories. Now I only see it as a cheap and uninteresting way of manufacturing drama.
@@MistahJ1940 The heroes journey is a tried and tested formula for writing a story. A good story often involves seeing a character discover something essential that he or she is missing at the beginning of the story. While the main character does not always have to be an underdog, having a Mary Sue as the title character is a sure way to tell a horrible story because the character doesn't need anything and learn anything.
Jessica Jones is a cool and nuanced character. She has a quick wit and is a PI. She likes to be left alone for the most part, but she has genuine concerns for others. She does not want to be a hero, but she always makes the right choice when times are difficult. As a man, I have nothing in common with Jessica, but I can relate to her because her wants and needs are well developed.
@@MistahJ1940 The answer is obvious. No one is perfect and everyone has flaws so seeing another character with real flaws is easily relatable. The perfect example of crap character is Rey Palpatine. She was boring AF and with her as the main protagonist, the sequel trilogy sucked. The toy figures of her and Rose never sold. They didn't even sell well at major discounts. Nobody wanted that crap.
The PTSD gave her an internal struggle to overcome, which is far more interesting than someone who’s just already perfect in every way

OG Peggy Carter is known for the balance between brawns and brain. She combined her intelligence and espionage skill to get things done and is very relatable.
Phase 4 Peggy Carter is this big buffed steroid muscular lady (technically Steve, but woman) who mainly uses her brawn more than brain and barely has personality. And now people mainly remember her for “I can do this all day”.
This is how Marvel respected her character by the way.
While Agents of Shield kind of spiraled in on itself and became impossible to follow, I did always like how Agent Carter treated all of its characters including its villains and its supporting cast.

That is exactly why I appreciate that AoS is keeping itself far away from this mess... Peggy, Daniel, Daisy, Melinda, Phil, and the rest of ABC Marvel's characters are already well-written characters and better off without being pulled into M-She-U...
I just watched gremlins, and Billy's mom is a f*&%ing boss. She's left alone in a house with 5 gremlins and blends 1, stabs another to death, and blows a third up in the microwave in a few minutes. Yes, she gets saved by Billy as a fourth one attacks her. Kate is also clever, figuring out on her own that the gremlins don't like light and using the flash on her polaroid to almost get free. Billy does save her, but at the end of the movie, Billy is saved by her when she finds the lights (and then by Gizmo).
The point is in that movie: 1) The mom definitely has the coolest kill streak of anyone period and 2) everyone needs help sometimes and 3) the women hold their own as much as anyone in the movie. The idea that feminism now has its day with junk like Captain Marvel is ridiculous. There have been strong women for decades, the difference now is that the women are literally written as gender-swapped men (the writer of Captain Marvel said the character she wrote was inspired by a male fighter pilot).
Exactly! I was actually thinking one day about the character of Marion from Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark. How it would be easy to dismiss her as just another damsel in distress for Indy to save, but when you really think about it, she isn't. She's tough as nails from the start. She orchestrates her own escape, and would have gotten away with it if it, too, if it hadn't been for those dang Not-sees (deliberate misspelling to avoid comment ban). In fact, by the end, Indy never rescues her. Both she and Indy are in hot water and it's only by a literal act of God that they get saved. I'm not a big fan of the fourth Indy movie, but I do love that not only does Marion return, she's the one Indy marries at the end.

Feminism is about equality. Imperfect female characters who also have strong traits and qualities is feminist. Perfect women who can do no wrong isn’t feminist, that’s female supremacist. Some people have taken feminism too far to go past saying women are equal to men to saying women are better than men, and that’s naturally offensive and confusing to a lot of people.
@@erikdayne5429 Yeah, a helpful rule of thumb when dealing with people is asking whether their views and/or actions are distinguishable from someone who's just clout- or power-chasing. While there's a bunch of people who may call themselves (or even see themselves as feminists) there words and actions are only concerned with "equality" when they feel their side is behind. Whenever their side is ahead, they celebrate and/or push for bigger disparities rather than seeking equality. This goes for pretty much any identity group, and the behavior is indistinguishable from that of a sociopath using the language of equality when convenient to get what they want.

What's your next example, the case of one country's Survivor season where it was a male team and a female team as "proof" when Survivor is a scripted reality TV show where contestants are chosen for whatever personalities will cause the most entertainment and drama?
Ripely was a cool character. She listens to people who know more than her like doctors, soldiers, and even the corporate people. She doesn’t just “know everything about everything.” Even the way she uses the weaponry at the end of Aliens “looks” like how someone would use it as a total newbie. She’s straining and scared but also incredibly brave. It really makes the film look more authentic and believable than what we see today where so much relating to “strong female characters” is unearned. By the way Ripley still had her strengths- she was a pilot and could also do the hauling with the exoskeleton. She wasn’t amazing at everything in life which means other characters could actually be important too.

But Sigourney Weaver nailed that role and made the character her own. She juggles between supporting her captain and managing the unionized crew, with hints of "I'm not paid enough for this shit" that brings reality to the settings. She embodies the human element struggling to fit into the works of an uncaring company, torn between her duties as a second in command and as a crewmate. (Her orders vs the captain's or bishop's, her prioritizing the crew vs "crew expendable")
That is directly relatable to a number of viewers and brings an element of "blue collars in space" that other Sci-Fi franchises never had.
And when the alien threat appears, she doesn't magically becomes the Hero because vagina, she's just as scared as the rest of them. But she rises up to the challenge and in doing so becomes the Hero.
"Heroism starts at the lowest point." Mary-sue writers have never learned that.
Ripley was just doing her work, without pushing THE MESSAGE all around in every fricking scene.
Indeed her actions emerge from a feminine side of protection from care for the cat and the girl, rather than a masculine side of aggressiveness where protection is a bit a consequence of being physically stronger, a masculine trait that looks unbelievable in these angry small actresses fighting to prove themselves stronger than men.

the main problem i have with how the female characters are made is how O.P they are. take Luke and Rey. there stories are almost exactly the same. but where Luke barely survives each fight Rey wins them all easily. Luke barely manages to cut off the Wampa's arm and then he runs away. that look of abject fear right after he cuts off the Wampa's arm shows that yeah he might be able to kill it easily but he's so scared of it that he won't risk it. that's 1 of the most human and relatable moments i've ever seen.
in ROTJ he barely survives against the rancor. at every step of his journey he almost dies and only just manages to scrape by. pan over to Rey who wins her first ever lightsaber fight against a man who's spent more years than she's lived training with a lightsaber and honing his skills.
the ease of which the female characters go through their journey and "trials" is insultingly easy. there's no actual struggle they're just that good. it's O.P Fanfiction levels of stupid. where a character is perfect at everything and can do things so much better than anyone else despite the complete impossibility of that. Hawkeye show anyone?
Iron Man 1. Tony barely wins against Obidiah and that requires him to cheat by using the Arc Reactor to fry him in his suit. Iron Man 2. he AND Rhodey lose to Vanko and only using a cheat move beat him. Iron Man 3. "the Mandarin" destroys multiple Iron Man suits before Pepper hits him from behind and he falls to his death. at every stage Tony this awesome badass character barely pulls out a win. the same for every male character. they all suffer and struggle and only barely eke out a win. but the women just do it so easily and with no struggle. again it's shitty fanfiction

you don’t get it. They don’t want entertainment, they apply the skills they learned in college writing class. It’s the combination of people that follow the mainstream line sheep, but because they went to college they think they’re superior to everyone else and it’s their mission to get the public into the right think. In those classes propaganda is wanted even necessary for good grades. You don’t get graded for individual ideas or clever stories, it’s about how you can can take any given topic and turn it into supposedly mainstream propaganda. That’s literally how writing classes work and now they’re thinking it applies in the real world, explains also why they react confused, angry to the criticism, they think the critiques are wrong because they still believe in what their college professor told them.

My wife and daughters were all in for the unity saga. After the infinity saga we watched some of the Disney plus marvel exclusives but we’re increasingly unimpressed.
Mcu already had great female characters that everyone loved. Black widow, Carter, gamora, nebula, and Jessica Jones had massive success on netflix. Everyone was fine with it because it wasn't forced
It didn't remove male characters to replace them with female characters. They were their own characters. They just don't like to compete for the limelight. The next step is to bring back all the original male characters but having them identify as female. Then they'll get rid of all the genetic females. Now that's progress. Just like real life. Now how's feminism working out for them?

That point about Wakanda Forever not having a proper main character is something I've noticed about most of these modern shows and movies. Star Wars 7-8-9, Rings of Power, Picard, Halo, etc. They all have a diverse group of protagonists, but no single character ever manages to stand out from the crowd to take the lead. So instead of a great hero boldly guiding the story, you just get a bunch of sidekicks stumbling around doing nothing.
It feels like each writer has a different favorite character, and they each think their character deserves to be the star, so they can't ever agree on who should take the lead. So instead, no one gets to lead, because equality!
Its like trying to play D&D without a DM, where every player wants to make their character the center of attention, and make sure everything always favors them over all else. And because they don't have that central authority to keep everything organized, it just ends up making a mess where nothing cool can ever happen.
Hollywood writers also have no backgrounds in classical literature, storytelling, dramatic structure, character archetypes, and literary techniques. And why not? Simple; it's "beneath them". They don't need to study Rostand, Goldman, Shakespeare, Stoppard, Moliere nor any other "old hacks". Nope. They're already perfect. Just like their characters. 🙄

The funny thing is that the female counterpart goes all the way back to Mythology. Two genders having the same "powers" is the basis for many comic and heroic figures, but the key was that males and females were/are innately different and the female version would be interesting because off that difference, and would not be a replacement but an addition. The current movieverse cannot do that because that would acknowledge that the two genders bring something different to the table. Best example is the Doctor Fate comics run, where both Kent and Inza Nelson wielded the Helm of Nabu powers in complementary ways.
The funny thing is, is that people complain and criticize this crap then run off to the cinema/online streaming service and pay to watch it, thus rewarding the productions... people need to stop watching and talking about this shh itt if they genuinely dislike it!!
I am sure the millions of classic female comic book nerds are absolutely thrilled about this and the negligible small group of male customers doesn’t play an important part in this strategy and can be ignored.

Never watched it. Infinity war was good cap to it all, great poignant ending. Captain Marvel came out and it felt like the story felt incongruent, time travel in endgame as well, both felt disrespectful to the masterpiece that had already been told. If they didn't have to play politics they could of easily created a movie that focused on Shuri & M'Baku fighting for the throne. Shuri not wanting the job but her mother forcing her into it and M'Baku getting resistance from the other tribes because they were afraid of what he might do. Than comes Namor to united the tribes. M'Baku learns to temper his agresson with wisdom and Shuri learns that you need to answer the call. You could even introduce a real romance into the MCU.

Black panther is pretty popular and they replace him with a female version of him which obviously was never not even close to being popular to tchalla. The female versions of male characters are never as popular as the male counterparts. They should have just recasted tchalla. It wouldn't be a sign of disrespect to recast the role.
Emily Blunt is my favorite actress, and hearing this about her makes me like her even more.
And what's interesting is that she's played some of the best strong female characters I've seen. Mary Poppins Returns, A Quiet Place, and Edge of Tomorrow are all great.

One of the problems is the lazy writing. They simply travelled back in time to get the stones, to change what happened. Then there's the segments where the Avengers are just sulking. And don't get me started on fat Thor, neutered Hulk, and whiney Iron-Spider getting saved by the women.
Then there are the numerous plot holes in the script that some fans attempt to explain. But that's just the thing; one of the dead giveaways of lazy writing is fans trying to explain those plot holes.
The channel named _Cinema Sleuth_ has a video in which he criticises _Endgame_ with some good arguments. The comments section has a number of fans of that movie, trying very hard to explain the plot holes presented by the channel.

Funny thing; I was thinking about this after recently watching an anime from the 80s. The protagonist was the silent, stoic type who is always cool and awesome, and yet he was shown to get to tired and have bloodied hands from a challenge he faced. So yeah, he faces challenges with the proper reaction despite being oh so great.

The clowns at Disney/Marvel don't seem to realize, or more likely don't care, that doing this is going to decrease their audience size. They believe they're too big to fail. They're not.
Ripley was a strong female character but her thing was she was a timid crew chick that would impress the guys by willing to work. Then she has to become a badass to protect the little girl. It meant something
Ripley, Sarah Conner, Nikita, hell, even Leeloo - all started off weak, lost, confused, etc, then rose to the challenge by becoming strong. It makes them relatable, gives them an arc, makes us appreciate their struggle and root for their victory. They earn our investment. This new trend of "perfect in every way right out of the box" is the exact opposite of that, and it's just boring. Then they have to double down and, as the lads say in this vid, straight up tell us that these characters are "strong, independant girl-bosses who don't need no man" - usually by having her emasculate every single male character within a mile. There's no subtlety at all.
That early loading dock scene in Aliens, where Ripley gets the nod of approval from Hicks after she surprises them by expertly piloting the loader mech is a great example of how you show a woman is strong without bringing sexism into it. The Marines weren't dismissive of her abilities because she was a woman - it was because she was a civilian with an honorary rank and no actual training. She knew they saw her as a liability (as did she) and she saw an opportunity to prove she wasn't, both to the Marines and herself. Simple scene, massive development moment, showed without telling, and respective genders never came into it. That's how it's done.
One of the great parts of that writing choice is how it directly ties into events later. That isn't just there to show her earning their approval, it's the foreshadowing of the big climax of the film. A merely competent writer (not that those aren't rare in the business these days) can do one thing with a scene. A great writer is doing multiple things. (Often the result of drafting and realizing 'Oh wait, I can do the job of both of theses scenes with this new scene instead!' in the process.)

It establishes the capabilities and operation of the rifle, explains Ripley's ability to use it later, shows Ripley's discomfort with violence, shows her understanding that she has to overcome that discomfort under the circumstances, gives Hicks some character development, and introduces a suggestion of romantic interest between the two.
The movie is filled with these hard-working bits -- even during the planning-table scene, where it's consistently Hicks who pays attention to Newt (noticing her reaching for the grenade and then putting her up on the table so she can see). This foreshadows his easy acceptance of Ripley's "let's save Newt" behavior later, because we've already seen a little of his paternal side.
Anyone remember when casting The Ancient One as a white woman was a huge thing? How the studio came out and said “Listen. Do you know and older, Tibetan actors who have that kind of wise feel to them? Me neither. So, instead of faking it, which people would complain about too, we went in a completely different way, and we think it worked out.”
It’s the exact same discussion we’re having now, but, back then, The Ancient One was actually impressive. She wasn’t there to take anything away from something or someone else. She was just playing the part, and I think she did it well.

Zach Galifianakis, reprising the role of wonder woman.. 'Wonderous Man' wears tall red boots, volleyball shorts a short golden cape.. he flies a see-through jet that constantly flies directly over the camera.
Spends most of his time arguing with people who are clearly lying and doesn't use the truth rope because as he repeatedly reminds us, "hes not into weird bondage stuff".
Wonderous Man is outright villainous and cruel towards the local weather girl, who eventually snaps, becomes a criminal, and goes to jail.
12 minute scene of standing uncomfortably in a line at the grocery store -no dialogue-
End of 2 hour movie.
Two thoughts:
Marvel has replaced all the dudes with dudes with bewbs. Everything that was considered "toxic masculinity" is now considered "strong female lead" and nothing much seems to have changed except the gender of the character. Oh, and that the scripts are now written by intellectually and emotionally immature scribblers.
I liked the trailer that showed the strong black female character going into another country and effectively kidnapping and transporting another younger black female to put to work for the good of the kidnapper's country, depriving younger black female of her rights, liberties, and freedom. Way to show Woman King how it was actually done! Wakanda Dahomey Forever!
Emily Blunt's character Rita in Edge of Tomorrow is a strong female character from day one, but the writers perfectly justified why with her backstory. The "stronk woman" has become such a trope that I'm not sure Rita would play as well now as she did in 2014. Kudos to Emily Blunt for speaking out.

Honestly, the thing that is going to be a light in the dark tunnel of Phase 4 will be GOTG Holiday Special, considering the track record of James Gunn and the GOTG films!
I'm more and more convinced that Disney is applying Agile and Lean project management tactics to film making (a terrible terrible idea). They work with a minimal script, film sequences (sprints) with multiple outcomes, test them on audiences and film a new batch of sequences based on reaction. They do that with multple plot threads to optimise "user satisfaction". Then they edit the whole soup back together. That's the only explanation I have for the mess that where their last movies (it's midely enjoyable mess, I give you that)

Having strong women in movies is cool, but it is logical to have more strong men, as this is the nature of things. I miss males heroes in movies and I also am really tired of watching mostly old movies to avoid the woke stuff. And then, as a woman, being strong does not mean being a "self-righteous bitch", that has nothing to do with women. Nikita is a cool movie, totally agree.
Agree larissa. As soon as fans hear "strong empowered woman" they fall asleep,vomit and switch off. The way Hollywood writes female characters in no way represents real women. Hollywood seems to think strong means obnoxious,rude,unappealing,graceless and generally not someone you would wish to hang around with. Its ridiculous. They write women as essentially the worst elements of anyone in a female "skin". Strength is shown in many different ways (not that so called strength should be shoehorned into everything,many people are not) and comes in many different forms. The (extremely clumsy and unwanted) force fed agenda of Hollywood is going to kill the industry. No one is interested in this crap. People just want good tales told well.

My favorite part is how when you point it out “they” then call you sexist etc meanwhile they are literally downgrading half the audience in almost every film.
The problem with "strong female character" is that it means the woman is a Mary Sue, perfect in every way, which is boring and ridiculous.
We've had "strong females" in films for decades: Ripley in the Aliens movies, Sarah Connor in the Terminator films, but neither one was superhuman nor perfect. They had to struggle against their enemies and they made mistakes, but they persevered. They also grew into their strength: Sarah Connor starts out as an ordinary woman who is forced to become a badass in her battle against the terminators; Ripley is an ordinary warrant officer who becomes a warrior woman out of necessity. These two women reach down inside themselves to find the strength they need to survive. What's also important is that the men around them weren't necessarily all whining wastes of space. It's not enough for all women to be "strong and brave", all men must be worthless and weak.
Yeah, it's not just an influx of female leads. All male leads are *surrounded* by women who are just as strong and capable as they are, if not more so. It's suffocating.

And then there's Evelyn from Everything Everywhere All at Once. A flawed, borderline unlikable protagonist who is literally the dullest version of herself when the film begins, and over the course of the film has tremendous growth a becomes strong, resourceful and lovable. Her arch was so satisfying.

In a nutshell, this kind of thing is why when some talking head un-ironically runs the "representation is *so* important" line, my gag reflex sets in. Yeah, sure, representation is important... until it comes to you. If a character who resembles you is present, they're there to be schooled, or put in their place.
In an alternate world they actually used talented writers to cultivate great stories for their already expansive cast of great female heroes and had their all female avengers that didn’t feel forced or derivative. While also retaining their fanbase! Shocking thought.
