  • In this video, I’m doing a quick overview of what a typical trail resupply looks like for my backpacking trips. Obviously, food varies a ton based on what’s available in smaller trail towns, but this will give you a good idea of how I structure my resupplies and what kind of food I eat on backpacking trips.
Sometimes, I like to throw in a few extra fruits and veggies for a more nutritionally dense resupply. I also try to opt for less processed foods when possible since so much of what you eat on a backpacking trip can be highly processed junk with really low nutritional value. I’m thinking I may do a video that is more tips & tricks for the nutritionally conscious oriented, if that’s something you’d like to see, let me know in the comments!
Some of my favorite backpacking food options that I can’t always find in grocery stores:
Dehydrated veggies (great for adding to ramen): amzn.to/44i08QZ
Dehydrated hummus (delish with crackers or in wraps): amzn.to/3Nx31XS
    Dehydrated black beans: amzn.to/42gYJbh
Dehydrated refried beans (add rice & taco seasoning for delish lunches): amzn.to/3oXFAgd
Mio electrolytes (so easy to add to water & less trash): amzn.to/3NxEQIR
Dirty Chai (a nice replacement if you’re sick of instant coffee): amzn.to/3VtcVvy
Organifi Red (An afternoon pick me up that isn’t nutritionally abhorrent): amzn.to/3Lq6fKc
Organifi Green (get some nutritional value in that won’t go rancid): amzn.to/3HzGp5v
Powdered milk (mix with cereal for a luxury breakfast and YUM): amzn.to/3p4azHH
Breakfast Essentials (not that hard to find, but love adding this for some nutrition and calories first thing in the morning with my coffee): amzn.to/3Vp0FfQ
What I use to make my videos:
    Epidemic Sound (for music): www.epidemicso...
    DJI Osmo Pocket 2: amzn.to/45H83qC
    Rode Video Microphone: amzn.to/3EM5rgN
    Peak Design Camera Clip: amzn.to/3UQSJmu
    Sony A6100: amzn.to/3V8woAp
microSD (for DIJI) w/4K capabilities: amzn.to/3OiIswJ
    SD (for Sony): amzn.to/3TPoeMc
Joby Tripod (mostly used with cellphone): amzn.to/3ioAnLm
LaCie 2TB external hard drive: amzn.to/3XedNVu

Good video. Organized with some variety. I need to try cold soaking.

thanks! I like it for lunches when it's hot enough during the day I'm not craving a hot meal as much!

I like the Santa Fe Instant Refried Beans . Oatmeal, about 2oz, (without the added sugar) is good in the morning with some added whole milk powder. That really hits the spot. I haven’t tried it cold soaked so can’t say how good it is that way. Nuts are a great source of protein as well as other micronutrients. Mike’s Mix at the end of day as a recovery drink is excellent. Dried fruit is good, freeze dried is better for you if you can stand the cost. Peanut butter in a squeeze tube is excellent on the Honey Stinger Waffles. Good luck on your trip.

oh i'll have to look for Santa Fe beans, I've only ever found the Mexican Rose brand in stores. I'm not a huge oatmeal person, but i do like overnight oats (don't ask me why there's a difference haha) I do bring nuts from time to time as well! they're just a little harder to eat while walking. Never heard of Mike's Mix i'll check that out. and LOVE the peanut butter on honeystingers idea. I bet you could even make a peanut butter sandwich with two. Thanks for the tips!

I didn't see your signature "mesh food"! Baggles, cream cheese, and a sub sandwich leaving town!

you are so right, I should have included that. It was def too hot for cream cheese in the canyon though.

This sounds weird but is surprisingly good, I put peanut butter on a tortilla plus sliced salami, used to use mayo or cream cheese with salami but turns out I like peanut butter better.

oooh interesting! I've def done the mayo but i'll have to try PB!

I'm curious about cold soaking! I'll definitely give it a try this season. One of my favorite dinner carbs is couscous - packs down small, super easy to make, and found at nearly every grocery store. My favorite is garlic herb couscous mixed with tuna and topped with crushed Cheez-Its!

oh yessss couscous is awesome (also has protein, right?). love the combo idea, i'll have to try that.
upon my return I can say the cold soaking wasn't terrible but idk if it's for me long term haha.

Thank you so much for this video. Would appreciate more content on healthy, nutritious backpacking meals -- especially ones that are simple to prepare on trail from ingredients that are possible to find at typical resupply stops. A dollar store resupply haul video would be sweet. Definitely let us know how cold soaking turns out. Appreciate the links. Safe travels and thanks for bringing us along.

oh that's a great idea! I'll add it to my list. Dollar stores are really hard to get anything nutritious to be honest (I do try to keep some extra green powders on me for that situation) but sometimes they have a few options.
Cold soaking verdict is - it's not terrible but I'm not sure it's something I'd want to do for a full thru-hike.

I love watching these and dreaming about what it would be like without immune issues. 😂 I will have too make all of my own food pre dehydrated when I start hiking again. I have Celiac disease and vasculitis, my body needs to be treated like royalty, I hate it. Wish I could eat simply like you all.

ooof. I know dietary restrictions must add a whole other challenge to backpacking. When/if you do make your own food I'd be super interested in any recipes you have to share. I'm sure there are others who would benefit as well!

How did the string cheese turn out? I am currently planning a few day trip and am curious if I should bring

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  ปีที่แล้ว +3

I do it all the time! I prefer it to the big cheese blocks because it doesn't get as slimy in the individual packages. If you are going somewhere super hot, maybe avoid it, but if you'll be in moderate climates I just keep it tucked away in my food bag.

I did try a cold soak refried beans the other day at home. I added some Fritos and it was very respectable for cold food. It rehydrated in less than 20 minutes. How long does it take when you add rice? Also, how long does ramen take to rehydrate? Thanks!

    • @eliseott
      @eliseott  ปีที่แล้ว

nice! as long as you get the instant rice it should be about the same. I usually try to put water in about ~30 minutes before i stop for lunch (or maybe 2 miles from my lunch spot to be safe). I don't find that the rice and beans suffer from too long of a soak so sometimes I err on the side of caution. Ramen, however can get gross if it sits too long (I think it gets too mushy and I'm not a fan) so I try to do that at about exactly 30 minutes.

This is highly processed and unnatural with a lot of unnecessary packing - not for me. Best is the dried mango here. I miss oats, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Anyway, good hike 😅

    • @eliseott

Yeah, it's hard to find that balance with backpacking food. I try to pack out veggies as often as possible!
