    I've added a small powerhead to mine and its perfect. Loads of amphipods and mysis shrimp are multiplying inside. I recomend to give it a shot

    Great idea! Much more economical than buying an aqua clear filter to mod into a fuge.

    Couldn’t you grow copepods and just pour a little extra water from the display tank in a cup so it does overflow them? Just an idea bc I really want to try this

    What if you tried a stronger air pump? Might that get the flow up a lil bit? Congrats on catching the tropheus.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This current air pump isn't even at full strength...when I use full strength it creates a annoying bubbling noise...it creates a bit more flow, but the noise is intolerable!

    If your big filter is close enough you can set up a small tube to act like a siphon from the back of the filter to the hang on boxes

    You can convert an aquaclear filter into a refugium without too much trouble if you have some plastic laying around too

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and that would have a good amount of flow...thanks

  • @markemark4203
    @markemark4203 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    they come with plastic attachments to angle the box so the water flows to the drain section to prevent over flowing. Get a stronger pump . My box drains out into the display probably around a teaspoon every 5 seconds. That slow drip is really bad !

  • @willdanielak4701
    @willdanielak4701 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can buy panel lights on amazon for 20 bucks they come on sets of 2 and they’re paper thin and grow chaeto like crazy. Just tape it to the back of the refugium

      DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS figured so but wanted to make sure. You still running them?

  • @pascal590
    @pascal590 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow MANY questions, your tank looks so healthy! What are your nitrate/phos levels? What kind of water changes do you do? And how many fish/feeding schedule? B/c for those lil fuges to be your only nutrient export is crazy.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. I have 6 fish, fed once a day varying with flake and frozen foods. Once a week 10-15% water changes. According to my API test kit nitrates, nitrites are both 0...never used a phos tester

    What about using a small pump from a table-top fountain for better flow?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As small as the container is...most filters would be too strong and cause it to overflow over the edges because the drainage is only meant to handle to little spill of water

    May I know whats inside the refugium box other than the algae, are those live sand as well?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Initially the sand wasn't live...it was regular substrate sand but you know after a year on the tank its live now. I also added small pieces of live rock, snail shells and a few pieces of dead coral that already had beneficial bacteria on it

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      correction...that wasn't sand it was crushed coral as a substrate in the refugium

    that nice im going to buy one i have a 20 gallon tank with about 15 fish and a 10 gallon tank with 3 cichilds and 1 pleco and i also have a 55 gallon that im resealing i want to move my 20 gallon fish to my 55 gallon and my 10 gallon cichilds to my 20 gallon. Im going to buy one because my cichilds eat or destroy any plants i put in there tank with that the plants can remove the nitrates with out being around the cichilds and using the same water.

    • @dwsdarius

      Not really, it sustains plant life and even though its slow, it still benefits tank

  • @420scatman
    @420scatman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    those plants are dying and likely increasing the nitrates on your aquarium, they need more flow and more light
