Another key point. I found the algae scrubber on my sump to be so effective that the plants stopped growing. Upon further testing I discovered that the algae scrubber was essentially "stripping out" all the nitrates and phosphates to the point where no algae would grow in the aquarium and plant growth was seriously retarded. Keep this in mind. The algae scrubber will work best where you find the best balance between nutrients (phosphates, nitrates) and levels necessary for plant growth. If you have plants, you can dose additional plant fertilizers. If you have a fish only aquarium, like an African Cichlid tank, the algae scrubber will be especially effective in reducing these nutrients.
If algae in the main tank is a problem, algae scrubbers are the best way to go. My algae scrubbers were more difficult to clean for me vs just removing bunches of water sprite.
Not familiar with that system. All attempts where I provided strong light, flow, fish waste and a substrate for the algae to grow on worked for me. Sponge worked better than the plastic mesh.
Thank you for producing this video. I’ll give this set up a try in an effort to reduce nitrates in my 180 gallon. How many hours per day would you estimate I need to leave the light on?
This video will give you an idea of how much algae can be produced with the sump version of an algae scrubber. In addition, algae growing in the main aquarium essentially is stopped since the algae scrubber consumes all the nitrates and phosphates that algae in an aquarium thrive on. th-cam.com/video/uNkHdsV-FII/w-d-xo.html
How effective would a 110 be for a 220g aquarium? Would I need two 110's? I like the idea of the sump setup, but in my sump, I don't have the front end access like you show in the sump video.
@@HalfManHalfCichlid this tank I'm setting up will be my first experience with a sump. But now I'm thinking of adding two HOBs to make this scrubber while I experiment with building my sump
Thank you for showing this. All the videos I've seen on this, all use a sump, which I don't have setup yet. Very useful!
I was looking for something simple and easily maintained algae scrubber. And you did it!! TY so much. ❤

Ty sir great idea

I have a waterbox 50.3 and I’d like to use an algae scrubber, would this be the cheap solution. I noticed icecap has an hob algae scrubber

I would start with 12 hrs

Is there anything inside the hob? Do you just cover the top with the mesh?
I have the ceramic media and sponge that came with the filter running inside
Do you need to have the stuff inside besides the screen for algae to grow on ?

Would help some and can produce a lot of algae. Obviously need more filters than just an AC 110 on a large aquarium

Ben Ochart and Santa Monica Filtration may not like this video, ha
Rough that screen up! :)
