I've got the same model, that S9. You need to hold the on button down for about a half a second instead of pushing it off and on. It's a very accurate tool. From the floor I measured across a hallway to a door and it was around 41 ft. The same measurement with my tape measure was only about 1/16" different. I don't know for sure, but possibly, having to hold the button down for 1/2 second prevents accidentally turning it on. Just guessing.
The lasers work pretty good but hut you must practice using them. I made a case holder for mine so it cannot move when taking a precise measurement. i mounted it on a tripod so I could turn it over a point to any object. It is excellent to do checks of objects that might be to close together or to far apart. Anyone who wants to use this should get a tripod and a white poster size target if doing measurements up to or beyond 100 feet. Do not expect much beyond 100 feet. They should make one that is reliable up to 400 feet with degrees and a tripod that is affordable to average people who can't pay 2,000 dollars for a total station.
