      yep still have no solutions. we have a large 8 year old male cat, a 6 year old female rescue mix, and our 2 year old instigator pittweiler. all compete for scents in and out of the home. so much resource guarding it’s exhausting.

      I have had this problem before and the gentleman in video nails it; you have to restrict access in your home. Crate training or leash tethering is the way. My male rottie goes through waves of marking and not marking in the house. He is too big to kennel so we tether his leash to a kettlebell. Dogs shouldn’t have full access to your home if they mark. Also you have to clean up all urine with an enzymatic cleaner. Just wiping it up just spreads it.

    My 3 year old mountain cur never actually pees. He marks, like 20-30 times outside, then comes inside and marks too. I've caught him in the act and corrected it many times. He seems to know that I'm upset with him but it doesn't stop the behavior. I adopted him at 6 months and he had just been neutered. I've had 4 other male dogs and none have had this behavior. I can't keep in a crate 24 hours a day. So frustrated.

      My Husky is 3 years old I can take him for an hour long walk with him marking. He comes in to pee on the corner of my bed. When I correct him he just rolls his eyes at me, I then tell him to go to his kennel. I love him very much, but he has annoying habits. Sometimes he won't even poop outside. Like he is nervous to do so. I smack him on the butt when I catch him marking. It seems to make him think about it. I've used many dog deterrent scents on my furniture. He don't accept treats outside

    Thankyou😊 Very helpful. Yes I'm having trouble with my male dog marking inside. Also my female dog, but she is good going on pads. They are both breeding dogs so I'm teaching them not to do that but finding it very hard. Sometimes they both go on the wee pads which is good. But mostly my male dog doesn't. I am very diligent on making sure they go outside frequently, even if it's only for short periods. Maybe I need to wait with them outside n make sure they wee. They are only 8 months and 1.5 years old. Was there anything else that you recommend please😊? But I'll try me and my partner going outside a time where the neighbours are hopefully not being busy bodies and looking over the fence into our backyard. So frustrating...

    your video was very interesting but doesn't really address my issue. My son has a 7 month old Pom. They moved into my home when his lease was up and are in between apartments. We have a 10 year old Pom that does not want to be bothered with the high activity of the puppy and probably considers the house his own. The puppy is marking all around the kitchen and family room areas where our old Pom usually is. Is the only remedy to keep them separated? this arrangement may last 2-3 months.

    I have a 14 month old Glen of Imaal, Gunder, who started marking in the house at 1 year. We have an older, little neutered male multipoo who marks everywhere, but only outside - these two have had pissing contests since Gunder was 6 mos. I have started having Gunder wear pads, but he doesn't seem to mind and the marking in the diaper continues. I'm trying to keep him on a leash attached to me in the house but he's very dog reactive and if a dog walks by he will suddenly yank my arm off! I'm working on both problems at once - am I doing it right?

      It’s hard to say if you are headed in the right direction but it seems that you may not be. Have you considered a pinch collar to deal with the lunging? Are you hand feeding your dogs and rewarding them when the are behaving or letting the eat out of a bowl? You may consider changing up some of this as it may help.

    I am about to go insane with my dog. He was trained from birth forward to be housebroken. He never made a mistake - From the breeder to my home, he's always had one of those Walmart blue pools to go in. It's cleaned every single day from bottom to top, removing all the ammonia and feces possible. New mulch at least once a week or twice, as needed. (I'm handicapped and he was purchased and trained to do this as I'm in an apartment and cannot leash him as needed)
    At about 7m old another dog was visiting and marked the corner of a hanging tapestry (and thus, the wall, corner, foot board and carpet). I cleaned it immediately and sprayed everything with vinegar and shampooed and used ozone out...
    But the damage was done. I have tried everything but this hall goes sideways to all rooms, there's only one way to watch it - camp in the hall. For months now I've had plastic chef mats cut and stapled in place, then a towel over it (visibility if he did pee plus no slip facter from standing fluid). He marks about every 4-6 days.
    He is most definitely urinating in full in his box and the walls were raised for his shy factor and height - there is no one competing...
    Please... I'm going crazy!!!!

      Go back and clean with Rocco and Roxie Pet Stain Remover. What we smell as “clean” with vinegar and regular cleaning products, our dogs’ noses are still strong enough to pick up the tube scent. Once you clean with an enzyme solution, the urine smell should TRULY be gone.

    If I buy a crate would that help? Or no? I’m buying dog barriers so he’s secluded to an area and he’s not peeing all over, but I read that a crate for night time is good? Is this true? Please reply. 😊

    • @AltheDogTrainer
      @AltheDogTrainer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Random Ness Think of crates and gates as physical boundaries. They can block the dog from going in a particular area. So in that sense, yes, it can help. I’d recommend showing your dog exactly where you want them to go and to not give them to much freedom inside the home until the habit of peeing where you want is formed. Let me know if that makes sense.

      I’m sorry that you’re going through that. There are training solutions for this kind of problem and if you and you’re family can make some changes, they may be difficult for you all, I believe it is possible. Obviously, I don’t know you or your dog. So, generally speaking, I would say it’s probable. Only you can determine if it will work. If he was my dog, he’d be tethered directly to me on a leash every time he went outside for the next 20 days. This way, he has little to not chance to screw up. I’d have you rewarding him each tone he marked EXACTLY where you wanted him to go without fail.

    We have 2 female dogs and now have rescued a male pup who is at least 3 years old. He was just neutered a few months ago at the shelter. He has only marked 3 times in our home. Once on our ottoman. After that, we put a belly band on him and I was able to stop him once from marking in the house. The third time, I didn’t actually see him do it. Otherwise, he does very well in our home. But - my question is, how do I work with him when we go to someone else’s home? I keep the belly band on him indoors but I don’t want to have to always have one on him! Do you have a recommendation for how to handle new places? Thanks!

      The hardest part in training a dog is getting the humans to be organized and diligent. My suggestion is to sit down with your SIL and come up with a plan to create the habits in the dog you want. I’d do everything in my control to not give the dog enough freedom to make the mistake. Much easier said than done but this is where your plan should really help. Good luck!

    My 19 mo male is AKC show quality but marks obsessively outside and occasionally marks in a couple of favorite areas in the house. Usually I'm too late to catch him but I will do better with confining him in the house and catching him in the act. My concern is the strict regulation against show dogs that must not be neutered (or spayed) and will be disqualified if they mark during the show. How to train intact dogs not to mark anywhere?

    • @AltheDogTrainer
      @AltheDogTrainer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Melinda. It sounds like getting a handle on this is really important to you. I’d really encourage to increase the structure in your adolescent dogs life for a short time to help lead in the right direction. I’d suggest being clear with yourself on where you want him to mark. I’d not give him more than 3 locations to go. Perhaps one where you live and then two on your daily walks. Also, if he is marking in you home, don’t leave him unsupervised and without a leash until the middle of next month. Now when he does use it in one of the pre determined locations, make it very satisfying for him. If you need more help, please reach out. I’d love to see y’all overcome this.

    My dachshund marks all the house!!! I take him out and he pees and everything and comes inside and marks. So most of the time I tell him to go in his crate but I hate doing so cause I wished he could get cuddles like our female cat ( who is fixed) debating on fixing my dog. His crate is huge though. Also. He pees his own water bowl 🤔

    I have a small Aussie. He is 5 years old. We take him out and he will pee on command. However, he will mark in the hallway and right in front of out master bathroom. We’ve put in new carpet in the hall and bedrooms 2 times now and even on new carpet with no pee smells he still marks the same areas. I can’t figure him out. He gets plenty of pee time outside. He’s been neutered. Great dog but just destroying our carpet. We are at the end of our rope with this guy and about to give him away. Any other suggestions than what was used in the video to stop this territory urinating behavior?

      The crate is necessary, or at least a dog pen. They need guidance, too much freedom makes them anxious and unsure. They're dogs, not people, they need strong rules and need you to make choices for them to feel safe and relaxed.

    • @AltheDogTrainer
      @AltheDogTrainer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is obviously very challenging. The problem with your particular circumstance is that there is no way to influence your dog for his choices. If you were able to, I’d have him in a kennel/run but not inside the home. You need to find some way to not allow him to Mark when you are not there.
      Now, when you are there, you really need to reinforce him for going exactly where you want him to and use a correction that works for him when he starts thinking about marking in the house.
      I also want you to consider getting anything that he has soiled, professionally cleaned.

      I’m sorry that you are struggling with this. The best advice I can give you is to do two things well. First, manage your dog very well. This means the dog doesn’t get any freedom to do the things you all don’t like that he does. For me, that means, he is either in a playpen, crate, or with you. He should spend as little time as possible in the crate and play pen. He should spend as much time as possible with you. When he is with you, you need to train. Have the dog on a leash and have a food pouch on your waist with his daily meals. Start training, don’t let him screw up any more and prove to your relatives that he can be an excellent dog.

      I'm sorry that you are struggling with this. You or a member of your family are probably going to have to be there with your male dog and on leash for the next two weeks to prevent your dog from doing this. If after the first week of you all being consistent, I would give the male dog some freedom. If he tries to pee on the other dog again, then it may be time to correct that dog.

      This is a good question and probably best answered by your veterinarian. My opinion is to only consider this after the growth plates on the dogs major bones have closed.
      In regards to marking, structure the environment so that your dog can’t make the mistake and you’re heavily rewarding where your dog should go for at least the next two weeks. This article might help.

      One question I had from your video was about being very diligent and using a leash. Do you keep your dog that is marking on a leash and with you at all times when not in their kennel? What I mean is, say I’m watching tv or on computer. The dog would be on a leash at my feet so they can’t just roam our house freely? I did I enjoy you video by the way.

    • @AltheDogTrainer
      @AltheDogTrainer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      sophiesmom8 I’d say maybe. One of the reasons I encourage you all to keep a leash is because each time your dog practices doing what you don’t want them to do, they get better. So, if you see that they start the pattern of searching where to mark, you can more easily interrupt it if that leash is on them. You know your dog better than I do. Can you trust them?

A couple of months ago we got a second bichon frise puppy, he is 5 months old, they are both males and are not neutered (i don't really like the idea, i mean, if i had a kid, i wouldn't want him neutered lol). The pup likes to play and lick the older dog but sometimes when they get too excited the pup marks the older dog's pillow, or where he sleeps. Sometimes, the older dog marks near the pup's crate. He never did this and we want it to stop, from both sides. We tried to keep them separate, and give them short sessions of playing together but whenever they get together for some time, the marking happens. It doesn't happen all over the house, and they do not mark inside the house when they are in separate rooms. How can we stop the marking and keep them calmer when they are together? We inherited a 3.5 year old Maltese male- he is marking. I bought him some diapers to wear in-between going outside. It’s been a month/ I take him out every hour(I set an alarm!!) - but if I don’t have the diaper in him- he still marks. He has 2 walks a day- so it’s not that. My question for the guy that did the video is/ if I fix him will he still mark. (Not looking for comments about benefits of fixing him- I’m in a gated community- we don’t have dogs or cats freely roaming/ all animals are on leash or fines are handed out) the only song I. Shelters here are in wanted dogs that are most likely already fixed.

    • @AltheDogTrainer
      @AltheDogTrainer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mister PuppyPants I think he still will mark because of his age. Marking is a secondary sex characteristics and because he’s gone through puberty the behavior is now there in his repertoire. I do think that if you neuter him testosterone is going to go down so the behavior will go down to some extent. One of the things I want you to consider is the amount of freedom that you’re giving him and the opportunity to make the mistake. I would personally take up his water bowl, control that and I would also use a playpen for several weeks to prevent him from marking. I hope this helps.

      Lord Thornton Eddington that’s a good question. Perhaps I mis spoke in the video about using a playpen to prevent marking. I would use a crate to prevent marking though. The reason that I would prevent marking for two weeks while I heavily reinforced marking where I wanted is to diminish the association and help the dogs brain forget that he ever marked indoors at all.

      It's my opinion to only do it if it is medically needed. That works for me. I train dogs to solve problems I have with them. I don't remove their organs.

    My male dog keeps pooping around my house and I have tried everything to make him stop. He is about 3-4 months old. He is a yorkie btw. He refuses to listen to me as well. Its honestly getting get on my nerves because he only poops when we are not watching him. As cute as he is and I do love him its getting to that point where am going to have to find him a different owner. My husband refuses to get him fixed as well because he wants to sell his sperm ( I don't know why 🙄). Can you please help with this issue?

      Get a crate, the only way you can sleep at night, confine him to the kitchen, then in the morning put him out side, have him near you at night and pet him but not on the floor, I say up! Up! If mine go on to the floor, when you go out crate him, with toys treats and radio on, with dog blankets, mine love their cages they lay in them in the day with doors open even when I’m home, it’s the best I could do as I felt like the dog and not the owner so now accidents happen still but in the same place

      Have you considered having him on a leash while he is inside? You may also consider not having water readily available. I’d keep it behind a closed door or at least off the floor. Then when you do give it to him, either keep him with you on leash, or at least in a crate in the same room with you.

    What about female puppies marking ?

    • @AltheDogTrainer
      @AltheDogTrainer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general I think you could apply my potty training protocol to address this problem. I’ll go ahead and leave that here for you.
      1. Do not give your dog free unlimited access to food and water. Notice I'm not saying to not give these essentials to your dog but rather limit how much availability they have to them. Why do you ask? These two things are the driving factor to what you are struggling with.
      2.Give your dog supervised access to food and water. I prefer to give the food during a training session and then let my dog get their fill of water afterward. I would suggest giving one to two opportunities a day but not more than 3.
      3. Now that your dog is feed and has had water, crate them in a crate about the size of their body. How long? It varies quite a bit. I'd say to prepare yourself for 20 to 45 minutes.
      4. Pay attention. Listen to the sounds your dog makes and learn which sound means they are ready to go out. They will make other sounds too. You can figure this out if you pay attention while they are in their crate.
      5. When they are ready, take them to the SPECIFIC potty area you have in mind and then wait. Give your dog plenty of time to do its business. Would 5 minutes be too much to ask?
      6. This step is the most important. Please reward your dog the moment they finish going and make it worth your dog's efforts. Don't give just one treat. How underwhelming. Perhaps, move a few paces away and play with your dog.
      7. Repeat the heck out of this.

      @@AltheDogTrainer that is the correct way. What better way to train an animal than in the way they instinctively train each other? As a puppy, the mother let's her offspring know in that same way that she eats, then they do; and does the same to ween them from the breast. In this way she teaches them how a dog behaves.

    I have two golden labs one is 5 the other is 1 and half Never had a problem with the oldest But recently The youngest keeps peeing in my mum's room upstairs Every time he has a chance that the door is open They have access to the garden but even if the back door is open to get outside I really don't understand it Nowhere else in the house he will do it and the other dog doesn't at all And he knows that he has done something wrong Most of the time we realize because he is laying in his bed with his head down Avoiding eye contact We don't shout at them or hit them so it's strange he acts this way very confusing We have a rabbit that is loose in the garden We'd let him out every morning and he comes back in every night It's a very large garden where the dogs can run around with a lot to do

      Have you considered restricting her access to that area? Remember, you’ve got to make meaningful rewards for a consistent number of days at the place you specifically want her to go. You’ll need to do this while not allowing her the opportunity to mark in your home.
