I had a test drive on the Toyota Yaris Cross (Premiere spec), then drove the Lexus LBX. It was an easy win for the LBX. The Yaris Cross is an ugly duckling by comparison and the interior of the LBX is light-years ahead in quality. The horribly cheap shiny plastic on the interior of the Yaris Cross (especially in the back) killed it for me. The LBX is quieter with more power, the transition from electric is smoother, the ride is more planted, and it's just so much more classy inside and out. It's well worth paying the extra couple of grand for the aesthetics and the quality of the LBX!
We put down a deposit on this because it's hard to find a car this size for city driving with the mileage that it offers. The premium price is the only hick up, but the quality covers that concern.
The colour suits you! Lexus are clever because not many would go for this colour so they will make money on other paint options. Personally I wouldn't mind it...better than boring red.

It will arrive in November! As you pointed out there are several shortcomings... that I do not need. But it has a great standard equipment regarding driver assistance. It is really perfect for me. But I was not brave. The white color is fine for me. I loved your review. Thank you very much.
Good looking car and not bad priced. The only thing i dont like is that yellow even though its a free option. Excellent video yet again Tish keep them coming.😀
Yes, unfortunately, yellow is the only colour included in the list price, but when you get a quote from a Lexus dealer, they include a colour "by default."
Thank LBX for some colours. The auto industry is really crying out for colour especially the interior... oh, that drab old grey is so everywhere.... And yes, i dont mind this (i think it is) organge car, with the beige interrior but i prefer the red one. I also like the screen positioning which, like the Subarus implementation, does not almost obstruct visibility...
Ordered one recently, in awd for the finnish winter. Only issues I have with it are its engine that should have been about 180-200 hp and that it doesn't have an usb a for my driving music. It is much nicer than the plasticy Yaris cross. You must experience both to tell.
While I agree that the 136 hp it has is enough for city, it doesn't exactly scream luxury when you start overtaking on country roads. At least here you really appreciate good overtake performance when the zones viable for overtaking are very short. As for USB, the car does not have a regular USB port for a USB stick, instead it forces you to use your smartphone and that means I have to adapt wired android auto. It's an inconvenience and that isn't a luxury thing either.
Yes it has, at least 4 type c in total. It just kinda sucks because it either forces me to purchase a new stick for no reason, or get an adaptor, or switch to mobile phone. Don't get me wrong, I love type c, but i feel like they should have included one og slot hidden somewhere for storage devices
Personally, I don't trust 3 cylinders engines ... if somebody is so interested in the fuel economy ... that 4 cyl. on Skoda Kamiq - with 2 cylinders deactivation - seems a more clever choice. 🤔
Another great review Tish, relaxed with everything covered. Although its a good looking little Lexus, I'd find the lack of elbow room and the step down into the boot very irritating. Regarding your comparison to Honda, I recently acquired a Honda zr v advance (after seeing your review for it!) which has plenty of elbow room and a lovely flat boot, plus a brilliant 2 ltr engine and electric motor set up making a fantastic yet economic drive - ending my 30 odd years as a Toyota/ Lexus driver.
I'm awaiting delivery from Wolverhampton Lexus; it landed at the dealership this morning. Mine is blue with a black roof. I really liked the Original Edition in that fantastic copper colour, but it's 40k. It's difficult to justify the price difference with the Premium Plus on just the colour and creature comfort, and like you, I really like that vegan leather upholstery as opposed to the Alcantara of the Takumi and higher versions. On the power thing, the Lexus all have 136bhp, the Yarisses Cross has 116 for the basic versions and 136 for the Premier Edition. Also, I didn't hear you mention that the LBX's track and wheelbase are wider and longer than those of the Yaris. The only thing where the Yaris Cross wins one point is the 40/20/40 rear seat. However, having tested the Yaris, it's really drab inside ... two minutes driving the Lexus, I was sold! What would have been nice is a textile opening roof (like on the Aygo Cross), which would have given open-air sensations at a lower cost than a glass roof (only available on range-topping Takumi Design) and without roofline penalty. As you said, the rear seats are unsuitable for the likes of Eilis!
I wouldn’t touch Wolves Lexus with a barge pole. Their pre sales is appalling…messed us around on multiple occasions, can’t get a test drive. Absolutely useless salespeople.
Great review. Great car. Thinking of getting one next year as it will likely be updated come the new year. The LBX is much more stylish than the Yaris Cross ( which looks boxy and lumpy, almost as if it's just congealed around the chassis). The yellow colour doesn't it no favours though. Only minor reservation of the exterior is the oddly small rear indicators. Engine would be fine for me. It's a city car, so would rather have better fuel economy than more "oomph". Boot space is fine. Who, realistically, is stuffing over 400L of whatever into their car on a regular basis? Interior also looks good. I like the lower central display. You shouldn't need to be looking at it whilst driving as you have all you need in the HUD and more behind the steering wheel. I am surprised they still even have that stumpy gear shift. Moving that to a stick on the steering wheel, or even just buttons on the central section, would improve the aesthetics of the interior.
I drive a bright orange Lexus NX. I wish it was yellow!!! I'm considering this new Lexus LBX or the new Toyota CHR Premier edition. Lots of research to do. The engine size of the LBX puts me off a bit as the new CHR is 2L
There's a reason why many TH-cam channels dont review this LBX, and because it is NOT a RX, NX, LS or the legendary IS. Those are the more popular and best selling Lexus vehicles. But right off the bat, the shape. It's so weird seeing a puny Lexus. It's like a miniature RX500h, but it still maintains that familiar Lexus style. Not really a fan of this particular colour but i do like the body lines. Love the LED lighting and technology. Hate that exposed wiper at the rear so that's definitely a zonk. It needs to tucked underneath the roof spoiler to clean up the style. An unusual Lexus but for the price, it's good to have a bit of luxury in a sub-compact package. Great review as always.😂
Folk seem to miss those points. It’s an entry level Lexus, based off the Cross. That’s what it’s supposed to be. A premium version of the cross, a taster and gateway into Lexus ownership. After owning several Yaris and after a long test drive in an LBX I can happily say first hand that as soon as possible this summer I’m in an LBX, its levels above the Yaris both hatch and Cross.
@mikesanders5433 right off the bat, I'm glad that your experience with the LBX is a positive one. And not surprising either. Lexus is known for reliability. As for the Yaris Cross, it's popping up everywhere in my area. It's not as refined as a Lexus but for many customers I guess it doesn't have to be. So it'll be interesting so see how well this car does in terms of sales. Will the Yaris Cross continue to outshine the competition, or are customers willing to go the luxury route and spend the extra money? I'm very interested in seeing how this plays out.
@@kickstand801 For me the question is for £35k would you have the Excel Cross which is the most practical version of the Yaris platform you can get or get the slightly less practical bit more luxurious LBX? There’s no right answer it’s down to the persons needs, I love my Yaris and travel up and down the country in it, but yeah a single 45 min test drive with the LBX which was half motorway half town driving instantly sold me on it. 🙂
I think the fact it only came out in 2024 could be a reason there needs more time to review and not sure if its even available in most of north america i think this car is catered to the european market
No idea why you narrowed you search to UK. There are ton of LBX reviews on YT. There is no sport mode. That special mode on gear selector is for mountains and lets you control strength of regenerative breaking. Nothing to do with sport mode, but more like "manual mode". It feels dynamic due to quite powerful electric motor which is linked to 2x stronger battery than Yaris has. This is the key to good dynamics. If I'm correct Japan gets double boot floor and also a standard AC socket at the back which can be useful. Shame this is not present in Europe.
Hi Tish, I bought an LBX Takumi in march, I agree with your review. It's a great car, style, comfort and tech, drives really well. However missing as you say some power 200bhp would be good, air vents in rear above the usb slots, plus in back a fold down arm rest (cup holders) and pass through to boot. Other than that I'm liking it and mpg really good.
@@jdmguy44 Yes the Morizo RR version and a few videos of it online, the x boss of Toyota was the one who wanted the LBX but also had this sporty version for himself as Morizo is his racing handle. Heres hoping as I've told my local Lexus dealer, let me know.
Yes, let's hope it does get that GR engine. One little thing you didn't mention is that on the AWD version (top spec), you get double wishbone suspension and noise cancelling glass and tech which is definitely more enticing as I heard the ride quality is quite firm and a little noisey at times. But back to the engine, as an owner of a regular Yaris hybrid, while it's fine to have such a little Sunak of an engine for fuel economy, when it comes to overtaking (and that Lexus price tag), you want something with more kick. So again, this definitely needs that GR engine. Hope there's more news on that soon, along with the suspension on the top-of-the-range version that could make this car quite special.
@@roscoecoltrane6867 Yes of course. Sunak is our recently ousted leader Rishi Sunak. A very poor performer, lethargic, boring, technocratic and uninspiring. Maybe that's way too harsh a comparison for the regular Yaris engine. In fact I'm sure it's way too harsh! 🤣 But paying Lexus money for an SUV with the regular Yaris engine is just too much of an ask.
@@mikesanders5433 I must admit, I didn't even look at the Urban (aka basic spec). The Tahara "leather" is perfect, fresh, smells nice and looks easy to maintain. Wasn't a fan of the Ultrasuede.
Does anyone know whether the LBX is likely to suffer with the same battery problem as the Yaris Cross? (Refusal to start if you only make short journeys or use the car infrequently - I believe some Yaris Cross owners have been plagued by this.)
I test drove this last month. Really nice however very cramped at the back and very expensive for what you get, a Yaris Cross underneath regardless of how much improvement Lexus has done.
Could you demonstrate how easy or awkward it is for the driver to clamber over the massive centre console to exit via the nearside passenger door? This is the only safe way to exit a vehicle following an incident on a motorway.
This is coming from somebody who owns a Yaris GR-Sport and has had three Yaris in the family and who champions the Cross and Hatchback because they are truly excellent cars.. But That LBX is leagues ahead of the Cross in terms of interior design, in refinement and in road holding 🤷♂️
@@clivegeary4587 It’s not a complete yes if that makes sense pal, I think the GR-Sports road holding is genuine hot hatch levels and I absolutely love mine for that. The LBX handles nearly as well but I found doesn’t suffer the same issues the Yaris does regarding the overall comfort/ride quality levels on rough roads and surfaces, it’s comfy throughout. I do want to test the facelift GR-Sport though, with the 130 engine 😬
@@mikesanders5433 It also not coming from French Toyota factory, which doesn't have good opinions. Also- it's very different car where about every aspect is further refined. Main differences are: interior, better handling/suspension, quietness, more dynamic due to 2x stronger battery (and few tweaks in engine), better assistance systems, better seats, lights... It's also made from very different (Japanese) components (eg. it has aluminium wheel stubs). Even things like plastic cover underneath the car is different. The only similarity is actually frame, digital cockpit and few other internal bits.
Have the LBX top spec 2wd. It is streets ahead of the yaris cross in terms of feel, handling and interior styling. Is a very solid feeling vehicle and quiet and refined. The Yaris cross feels like a tin can in comparison. I drove both multiple times before deciding on purchase
Please when you review can you say the specific model of LBX. Not all the features you spoke about are on all versions of this car. I have premium plus model and some things you spoke about my car does not have.
The engineers make an E-CVT transmission which keeps the engine in the most efficient speed and load range for ultimate efficiency; Car reviewers don't like it because it doesn't sound like an inefficient, polluting manual car from 30 years ago.🤔
Perhaps, if I wasn't living in Cyprus, then I might think about it, but, as all the car fleet of the telecommunications company of Cyprus uses the same yellow, it would be a definite no-no! 😁 I like the red that the car you reviewed in Spain was displayed in.
Survey says yellow cars keep the resale value the best…. For 2 reasons: People who love it love it and owners of yellow cars keep them better. #2 is orange for the same reasons. The worst is brown.
I can't believe anyone can sum up this car as not bad value. Why compare prices of the average Honda EV ( which is much bigger ) to a hybrid? It starts from over £32k for a small SUV. Why compare it to a Q2 when a Q2 is bigger? It's natural compeditor is it's cousin the Toyota Yaris Cross. I reckon this car will be quietly dropped in the next few years. £40k for a small city SUV with little rear space and a boot that's less practical than a Yaris Cross ( Our yaris Cross came with a split rear boot floor as standard ). Our YarisX is great 2nd car for around town but far too small for anything else. Build quality aside, the Lexus is the same car. £40k for something that's only good around town? Common sense says that formula isn't going to work. I give it a few years before it's dropped here in the UK.
Picked up an LBX yesterday. 2 points to piss me off to start with. If you buy the much cheaper Yaris Cross, you get wireless Android Auto..... Buy a more expensive Lexus LBX, and you do not!!. Wake up and smell the coffee Lexus, who wants to pay more for less..... 2nd point which somewhat questions the build quality is to have the gear lever fall off today at a grand total of 72 miles... Not a happy bunny.
I really enjoy your reviews, you are extremely engaging and friendly. This might be hard to discern, but I find that Toyota in general, have terribly uncomfortable seats. The current Corolla as an example. I get a tight upper back and neck pain. Would this Lexus be any better?
I very very nearly purchased a Premium Plus in Swindon but it really struggled to get going with 4 adults on board. I’ve just collected a Volvo XC40 B3 Ultimate.
I had to look up the price and specs and it doesn't look bad@@AutoSocialUKbut one has to keep in mind that's it's a rather small and entry level (for Lexus) car, which you explained nicely from 9:20 onwards as it indeed lacks the premium Lexus feel.
@@slavomt5832 It's new design for Lexus. First such a model designed in Europe for European market. There is also extra touch from Toyota CEO- he made it bit more sporty. Some comfort has been pushed into more controlled driving experience, so suspension is stiffer than in other Lexus cars.
Great review tish. The vibrant colour for me is a but much, the red one you checked out was nice. Question for you, breakfast you said cheerios 🤔 plain cheerios or honey cheerios? 😂
Well I've bought the LBX and it's a brilliant motor on my opinion but this review mentions " sport" mode ??... doesn't exist so don't buy it if that's on your wish list! It's quite Nippy enough for me though.
Don’t get you started on the price of electric cars. Well between £30,000 and £40,000 you can buy the Kia Niro Ev , the Volvo Ex30 , Hyundai kona electric and the tesla modal 3 and many more
you’ve just described almost every Lexus for the last 30 years. They are all heavily re-engineered Toyotas. Doesn’t stop Lexus topping most satisfaction, reliability and dealer surveys year after year.
No, they just share a platform, but there's very little in common between the two cars in terms of wheelbase, trck, suspension tuning, silence on board, and general road behaviour. I tested both. The price difference with the Yaris Cross is not that wide, especially if you want one of the 2 versions of the Cross with the 136bhp engine.
This will sell for the simple reason that they screwed up with the UX. For people who find the NX to big . The UX isn’t a real option , it looks fugly, trunk is so small it’s ridiculous, interior isn’t that pretty also, and it’s expensive.
@@AutoSocialUK The biggest issue being the tiny trunk wasn’t addressed in the facelift. The only major improvement is getting rid of that moronic touchpad. But the new screen is a downgrade to the looks of the interior. I don’t know why they struggle so much with that model, all their other cars are nice and have wonderful interiors, including this LBX.
I would characterize Lexus LBX as a "KIA STONIC 2". If a KIA STONIC 2 was to be produced I think it would look like this..... the similarities of LBX with the existing KIA STONIC are (in my opinion) very obvious.
I don’t understand this vehicle. The design isn’t particularly premium, nor is it particularly Lexus. Furthermore, the front facia looks similar to the CHR and other new Toyotas but less bold/striking shouldn’t it at least be the other way around. I ultimately think the design is to close to Toyota, the interior may be well built but the design is typical of a Japanese interior, a bit weird/bland, old school and merely functional, not all you want from a premium vehicle. I think this will fail at bringing in the new and younger customers to the brand, the aim of this Lexus Breakthrough Crossover (LBX)
I have to disagree with you Tish I think the Alloys look cheap and the car boring but it will sell because it is boring and Conservative so Lexus are onto a winner. I love the yellow/Orange colour do. Yelange they should call it.
It does look like a love-child of a Hyundai Kona and a Lexus NX, where it got the design genes from the Kona LOL!! Looks good, but is placed in such a competetive niche, that it's gonna be a white raven - just like it's father - the Lexus NX! Love how you accidentaly revealed everything that's wrong with today's screens - basically in every car! Dust and sunlight! At a certain angle - even if you can see what is on the screen - the dust particles just makes it so hard to enjoy!!
we should not compare it to other overpriced cars we should compare it to what similar cars cost 3 years ago !the worlds gone mad....dont pay these prices

So again, this definitely needs that GR engine. Hope there's more news on that soon, along with the suspension on the top-of-the-range version that could make this car quite special.
For this of us who live outside of the UK, what does “Sunak of an engine” mean?
@@roscoecoltrane6867 Yes of course.
Sunak is our recently ousted leader Rishi Sunak. A very poor performer, lethargic, boring, technocratic and uninspiring.
Maybe that's way too harsh a comparison for the regular Yaris engine. In fact I'm sure it's way too harsh! 🤣
But paying Lexus money for an SUV with the regular Yaris engine is just too much of an ask.
@@roscoecoltrane6867 Btw since writing my original comment I have heard Toyota have made a prototype of the LBX with the GR Yaris engine! 🥰
Fantastic video!! Lovely shade of yellow too
The rear reminds me of the Kia Stonic. Great review, as always
I totally see that now!
Which model are you reviewing…..I have a “premium plus” but no “paddles” or “sports” mode……?
There is no sport mode in any trim. Only paddles (in some trims) for controlling recuperation strength.
the screen looks better lower down - but agree it's not as practical there. i have the same issue in my mk 3 octavia
I recon you could make a great Car Share style video with Vicki.
I would love that! Vicki is great!
Is there a version with panoramic view roof?
No
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I can't believe lexus have put their name to this car
@ekimandersom4478 that's what I mean about beauty is in the eye of the beholder, if we all liked the same car how dull would that be .
.....you just got one more sub after making this video. Thank you!
Great review, this channel deserves way more subscribers!! 🙏🙏
I appreciate that! Working hard on it
Is it worth paying the extra over Yaris cross with similar specs
When did vinyl seating become luxury?
They're not vinyl either
Yep, sweaty bum time!
You have Cloth in the base spec, Tahara leather which Lexus have been using for decades or alcantara ‘Ultrasuede’ 🤷♂️
@@mikesanders5433 I must admit, I didn't even look at the Urban (aka basic spec). The Tahara "leather" is perfect, fresh, smells nice and looks easy to maintain. Wasn't a fan of the Ultrasuede.
@@Alessandro--- Exactly there is a great variety. Including real leather on the tan leather options. No vinyl whatsoever 😂
Does anyone know whether the LBX is likely to suffer with the same battery problem as the Yaris Cross? (Refusal to start if you only make short journeys or use the car infrequently - I believe some Yaris Cross owners have been plagued by this.)
In UK this Lexus lbx is great.
What about the animal product on the steering wheel and the top of the dashboard, you stated
I test drove this last month. Really nice however very cramped at the back and very expensive for what you get, a Yaris Cross underneath regardless of how much improvement Lexus has done.
Thanks for sharing!
The Yaris cross isn’t cheap also
Could you demonstrate how easy or awkward it is for the driver to clamber over the massive centre console to exit via the nearside passenger door? This is the only safe way to exit a vehicle following an incident on a motorway.
Ordered the LBX over the C-HR cause its smaller.
I've got Lexus UX, bigger engine than this but the refinement is amazing.
Got a review of that coming up 😏 I was shocked at how small the boot was though!
@@AutoSocialUK Not the biggest but total volume is pretty good. I don't have too much luggage so perfect for me
The Yaris Cross has the adjustable boot floor 😢
It's a Yaris Cross for an even bigger price premium. My Yaris Cross has an adjustable boot floor.
@@mikesanders5433 You found it better to drive than your Yaris GR Sport? I also have a Yaris GR Sport.
Offa the road? ? Good content well researched
The LBX has a significantly larger boot than the UX, which is a significantly bigger car. It's quite amazing how good Lexus is at wasting space.
Utterly brilliant & refreshing 'real world' review Trish. Such a gorgeous voice (& looks) too! Brill 👍.
Thank you kindly! Glad you enjoyed it!
Lexus UX here in Canada is very small already, it is tiny, meanwhile I can’t think of how small LBX would be lol
Please when you review can you say the specific model of LBX. Not all the features you spoke about are on all versions of this car. I have premium plus model and some things you spoke about my car does not have.
Is it a BYD Seagull under ?
I'm tempted to wait untl they release a more powerful version.
The engineers make an E-CVT transmission which keeps the engine in the most efficient speed and load range for ultimate efficiency;
Car reviewers don't like it because it doesn't sound like an inefficient, polluting manual car from 30 years ago.🤔
Lexus badge will look good park outside the sslon or Gymn 😂🎉
I love Lexus. I’ve had an RX450h for 8 years, not a single fault with it.
Good Job.
Great car but really hard to justify the price
Perhaps, if I wasn't living in Cyprus, then I might think about it, but, as all the car fleet of the telecommunications company of Cyprus uses the same yellow, it would be a definite no-no! 😁 I like the red that the car you reviewed in Spain was displayed in.
.."Excellent review"..
Thought they started at 30K?
The amount Toyota charging more than Yaris cross for LBX, they didnt bother to garnish the tail pipe, why why why Toyota?
If you have ever been in a Tesla (🤮)you will feel that even a Yaris is a Maybach in comparison to the Tesla.
You can get a Tesla Model Y High Performance for the price of one LBX :D
Survey says yellow cars keep the resale value the best…. For 2 reasons: People who love it love it and owners of yellow cars keep them better. #2 is orange for the same reasons. The worst is brown.
Survey in Germany says exactly the opposite
Prices start at 30k. The cheapest Ford Focus is nearly 29k so doesn't seem bad to me
It's made in Japan ,and it's a Lexus, that's already much better than the C-HR which is made in Turkey.
it would be perfect if it had the 200+hp toyota hybrid
XC40 i much bigger. It's more like UX or even NX.
Wow, I'd rather say it was a new Peugeot or a KIA, but never a Lexus😮 such a different design
Good thing or bad thing????
I had to look up the price and specs and it doesn't look bad@@AutoSocialUKbut one has to keep in mind that's it's a rather small and entry level (for Lexus) car, which you explained nicely from 9:20 onwards as it indeed lacks the premium Lexus feel.
The design is modern and sophisticated. I really like it!
@@slavomt5832 It's new design for Lexus. First such a model designed in Europe for European market. There is also extra touch from Toyota CEO- he made it bit more sporty. Some comfort has been pushed into more controlled driving experience, so suspension is stiffer than in other Lexus cars.
Parrot sneaked in there. Naughty.
Looks great, If this is related to Toyota have Lexus done something to stop these teenagers pinching them like RAV4’s, the literal “gone in 60’s”….😳
In The Netherlands much overpriced.
I like this car but I think it will be a one year old UX next year.
Well between £30,000 and £40,000 you can buy the Kia Niro Ev , the Volvo Ex30 , Hyundai kona electric and the tesla modal 3 and many more
I know it's a city car but needs more juice on the engine
its a Yaris cross. And Yaris cross in same as Cheap Yaris. U pay much more for same car with just nicer trim
you’ve just described almost every Lexus for the last 30 years.
You need to do some research. It's not just a Yaris Cross. There are actually a lot of differences from the modified platform to the power train.
I’m struggling to see how that thing is supposed to be stylish
This will sell for the simple reason that they screwed up with the UX.
For people who find the NX to big .
The UX isn’t a real option , it looks fugly, trunk is so small it’s ridiculous, interior isn’t that pretty also, and it’s expensive.
Funny enough I have a review of the UX facelift coming up…. Hadn’t driven it before. Opened up the boot and I was audibly shocked 😂😂😂
Too expensive and too lightly equipped when compared to Yaris Cross Premier edition.
Feels like a Lexus promotional video. It's a Yaris Cross with more soft touches. That's it.
You clearly haven't driven both.
It to small on the inside and no room in the rear seat
I like this car. Still overpriced (wait 2 years and buy 2nd hand) but that colour is as impressive as the reviewer is becoming.
I hope the colour part was a compliment 🥹🥹☺️
I have to disagree with you Tish I think the Alloys look cheap and the car boring but it will sell because it is boring and Conservative so Lexus are onto a winner. I love the yellow/Orange colour do. Yelange they should call it.
No rear armwrest, no rear vents? Luxury car? Seriously?
