I've found I can down pick for a lot longer standing up than sitting down, when I sit my forearm starts to freeze up by the 2nd verse of Master of Puppets but standing up I can play it all, it's weird

I cant stand up because I'm in a wheelchair. But just today I tried sitting in a normal chair instead of my wheelchair. In that position I can angle the guitar like you said. And that actually helps a lot with my left hand technique because i can properly put my thumb in the middle behind the neck.

Start sitting...stand at some point. Wander about the room. Occasionally end up on my back. Music knows no single position.

I don’t practice while sitting at all. I always stand, never sit. I probably should practice sitting a little, but I really prefer standing because it’s more useful. I can rock out easier, I can pick easier, and I can move along the fretboard easier all while standing.

It's dependent on what I'm doing. I sit when I'm doing all my tappier stuff coz for some reason it's easier. I also tend to sit down when first learning a technique or shape until it's ingrained into my muscle memory, then stand up to get the feel for it stood up.
Metal is just a straightout rock out stood up. Can't headbang properly sat down 😂

Not just the angle is different when you are standing up. Also its different view to look at the fret board. Finger position and the grip of the guitar neck etc. Sometimes you need to twist the hand different. Well just practice and practice...

I can't play at all sitting down with the guitar on the right leg, the so-called casual position. My right arm and elbow start aching due to the right arm being forced into a tight angle < 90 degrees. Barre chords are harder due to fact the left elbow is either level/above the neck, plus the fact your shoulders are not aligned and sloped. The guitar body is way out to right and the neck is way too straight and close to you compared to standing. So, you sort of end contorting your body to fit all of this. Really bad for your posture and so different from standing.
The solution I found is get a stool that can go reasonable high so your legs can be reasonable flat on the floor and like hang at 30 degrees ish, basically not at 90 degrees so you have room for your guitar to hang and not touch your legs. Put a strap and position your guitar in between your legs more like classical. Set you strap reasonable high, so the guitar doesn't touch your left leg. Don't worry you won't look like the Beatles :) Keep your left leg a bit straight in front of you and flare out your right leg. You'll find the guitar will hang in a natural position, very very similar to standing. At this point your shoulders will be straight and everything will become easier. The right arm will be at 90 degrees roughly, so no strain. The left elbow will be well below the neck, so barre chords are so much easier. Then try standing up, it's virtually the same and you haven't wrecked your body. Added bonus, you build up stamina for standing sitting down like this.
The only thing is, if you like having the guitar extremely low like Matt you will generally struggle more because of the wrist angle and strain. Even he says his playing suffers. But maybe you'll look cooler:)

Hey Matt! A bit off topic but I’ve been waiting for you to upload a new video to say that after hearing “BLACKSTAR AMPLIFICATION” on every video lmao I ordered the 1046L6(upgrading from Orange Tiny Terror), as soon as it arrives I’ll try your settings. Thanks for the inspiration and amazing content .

Here's the deal. If you've got a gig coming up, you'd better practice those parts standing up at least once before the gig. If you've been sitting all week practicing the licks, when you get on stage you're gonna be thrown off and won't have time let your picking hand settle in and adjust. And you'll hate yourself as you try to play those fast leads and your picking hand just isn't connecting to the string the way you got used to (sitting down) and you won't have the control and sound sloppy. So, sitting is fine, but when you gotta a gig coming up, you'd better do some practice standing.

I see a lot of TH-cam and Instagram shredders. Most are sitting down. In the beginning, getting comfortable w the guitar, yeah, sitting down. If I see a shredder that ONLY plays or posts sitting down, after a while, I lose a bit of respect. Like "OK, but can you do that standing up?"

I had trouble with playing standing up and would have my strap extremely high when I would stand to compensate for standing. but with time and practice I was able to lower my strap so my guitar wasn't by my chin.

For the first year of playing guitar i liked sitting, which was way easier, but now-a-days its easier for me to stand, its only been like 1.5 years that i've been playing so i can't say much lol.
What matters is riffing all the way!!! \m/

Great video Matt! I agree, practice both sitting & standing. Man when you spend hours learning a new song and then record it sitting and then when it’s video shoot time and ya gotta stand to play reality hits hard! Lol!! 🤟🏼

I do both, but I built my own stool so I could sit and use the strap. That way the guitar hangs in the same position either way. I can't really sit and play without my stool because I broke my neck, (mine, not the guitars,) and had two cervical vertebrae replaced with synthetics. My neck won't bend that way anymore. Lets my nuts swing free too... Best way to jam.

i can't do it standing up, my damn Jackson KEX got a terrible neck dive, and really dont know what to do, also its flat edges hurt a lot and cant find a very comfy position for my right hand

4:16, I hold it mostly like that, cause when I want to play solo on higher frets it's a lot easier in that position. When I hold it on right leg my arm hit my belly around 15-16 fret.
