Yes this is correct. You always tune up. Here's the reason why though. It has nothing to do with the cogs or the tuning pegs. It's because when you loosen the string tension (tune down), the strings have a tendency to loosen more than you allow it to. When you tighten the tension (tune up), they stay in that tension a lot longer.

I have done it ever since i started to learn to play guitar. My dad was teaching me to change guitar strings and just mentioned that "oh btw always tune up never down" and yes, that info got stuck in my brain and has been there for over a decade.

Definitely correct and the reason is when you tune down to pitch some of the slack can get a bit caught inbetween the peg and the nut. When you hit the strings it transfers all the way down to the bridge and can send the note flat. This is the case particularly for the lower wound strings and for cheaper nuts/tuning gears. Tune up to pitch people!

There's a video of Joe Walsh doing a series of guitar setup tips from Gibson and this is one of the thing he mentions. Been tuning like this since i saw that video a few years ago.

    Very good bro

It's just friction gripping the string in the nut when you tune down, so when you start playing after tuning down to pitch you release that friction and it goes flat.

I've always done this and it does help stay in tune. Especially with that pesky G string.

Ohhhh fucking G string ha ha

Shave a little graphite from a pencil into the nut. That will eliminate that pesky g string problem

Great tip! I was unconsciously doing it! It always felt more stable and "stronger?".

Best quick tuning tip! I found this out a couple of years ago from a youtube video, actually.
Nice to be reminded of it, though. \M/

Never head of "only tuning up", that kinda makes sense because the of the way the strings are wrapped around the tuners.

I always pull up with my finger on the string (not too hard) to loosen it and then pick it, and if it doesn't go down enough, manually tune down and tune up. Always works!

I've heard this before too from years ago, that I can't remember for the life of me who it was that told me that either lolol I think it might have to do with string tension? Like tightening the string, as oppose to loosening the string, so tight 'holds' better I guess? lol idk but that actually takes me back a bit... Hell it could have been my guitar teacher that told me that too!! Haha

I noticed the difference in tuning to pitch and tuning high and then ro pitch when playing my guitar, I was surprised to find out that this wasn't an aware error, until now of course. 👍🤟
